Car Talk / Amazing Facts Why Nigerians Love Japanese Cars. by Frankestein08(m): 5:26pm On May 15, 2015
When compared with the French Peugeot or the German Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, the loved and well embraced Toyota, Nissan and Honda of our time are late comers to the Nigerian automobile market. This is a fact people barely remember owing to the current wave of Japmobiles-Japanese cars-in Nigeria. The shift in the demand for more Japanese cars in Nigeria instead of more European cars is very much in line with the global shift to light-weight vehicles with better fuel economy and reliability.

According to vehicle sales data at the end of 2013, Toyota still held the top spot in total vehicle sales, followed by a strong European contender-Volkswagen. In this article, I will go beyond justifying the current market shift to Japanese vehicles solely from a global market perspective. In line with what obtains in the Nigerian vehicle market and general transport trends in this region, I have observed a few collective trends which may have led to this local market shift beyond key global or western influence. I will go further to try and explain why Nigerians have come to love Japanese cars so much and why this may be a very difficult trend to reverse.

1) Initial low price required for vehicle and spare-parts purchase:

as many people have a very wrong notion about European car spare-parts pricing, for instance Mercedes Benz parts are traditionally tagged ‘too expensive’. But the truth here is the seemingly higher initial expense required to purchase a Mercedes car part is relative to the expected time it will serve you. A Nissan shock-absorber may cost half the price of that of a Mercedes but would hardly match serving half the life-span of the Mercedes spare-part; it’s not a question of durability, it’s just the clear strategies adopted by these distinct vehicle makers. In a cash-based society like ours with a struggling number of the middle-class individuals, without a doubt, the Japanese strategy suits us very well. A significant chunk of individuals are not after owning super vehicles as they need a simple transporter capable of moving themfrom point A to point B. They want the car with the lowest price tag and lowest spare-part cost regardless of the long-term durability prospects or frequency of repairsowing to more frequent spare-part replacements or maintenance procedures.

2) Nigerians are largely ‘safe followers’ and poor researchers:

this is very glaring in ourpurchasing attitude. Some just love Toyota cars owing to the safety in numbers. However, in the real sense of it, you can’t rule out popularity of a particular brand when choosing which to spend your moneyon but, there a several other factors to consider. A typical Nigerian will land at his/her conclusion based on the facts that many people use Japanese cars and many mechanics know their way around these cars- which is hardly true for newer models.

3) Japanese cars have good 3rd hand value:

when it comes to reselling vehicles in Nigeria, European cars are seen as ‘bad market’, as Japanese cars are the ones that‘move well’ in the market. But why is this the case? Japanese cars have lighter weight and fewer automation making themmore reliable even to non-attentive owners, but European cars with more automation require that extra attention most Nigerian buyers are not willing to give.

4) Fuel economy is the king:

over here in Nigeria, the true test of how fuel thirsty a vehicle is happens to be a measure of its fuel consumption when something is wrongwith the engine or drivetrain. Nigerians don’t want a car that will consume excess fuel just because a few sensors or an injector is bad, as they will rather manage. If a vehicle can’t maintain reasonable fuel economy levels while they are ‘managing’, it simply means the vehicle is a true fuel guzzler.

5) Transporters choice:

many transporters prefer Japanese vehicles like Mazda buses/cars, Nissan vehicles, Toyota vehicles and the new wave of Chinese vehicles generally. A good example of this shift from European to Asian vehicles is thefleet history of Cross Country transport which operates across West-Africa. They first began in 2002 with Volkswagen buses but today they have a fleet which comprises majorly of Asian brands like Toyota, Nissan, President Hiace , Foton andour locally made Innoson. Preferences of this kind go a long way to cement the motoring public’s perception about the reliability of Japanese vehicles as these inter-state commuter buses are subjected to repeated stresses and road impact morethan any city car, hence why they are used as a perfect yard-stick in passenger vehicleselection.

6) Vehicle dealerships/car sale centers in Nigeria are largely uncreative:

every dealer hopes to get a market share and very few really think about a long-term strategy to go up against well embraced and loved Japanese cars. A few notable efforts have been made by dealers like Cosharis, Dana, amongst others in the pastto lure Nigerians to try out European, Koreans and American marques but, for there to be a true market shift, there has to be a more sustained and collective approach backed by better after-sales services and better post-warranty policies.

7) Our average mechanics are lazy and non-progressive, but street smart:

The same mechanics that will worship the 1999 ‘tiny light’ Toyota Camry will out rightly regard the 2008 ‘muscle’ Toyota Camry as a problematic car. This is simply because the tiptronic gear system (which is electronically mated to the engine) is any average mechanic’s nightmare. A typical Nigerian mechanic isn’t conscious of technological advancement around him/her. Rather than trying to learn new things, they will rather justify their love for the old technologies, just as they did with the injector system when manufacturers began phasing out carburetors. These same mechanics are however, smart enough to influence purchasing decisions of their clients to enable them remain relevant.

So if you happen to be a Japanese-crazy Nigerian vehicle owner, please share why you love your car so much.

2. Advanced Automotive Cameras.

Sophisticated front camera systems will be a must-have feature for the soon-to-be-released cars as rearview cameras has already become standard equipment for mega-toys these days. According to the rules by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, all light passenger vehicles would require to have rear view cameras by the end of 2014. Intelligent front cameras such as Cross-path cameras are already incorporated in few cars from Ford, Chrysler and BMW, which show a 180-degree view from the front of the vehicle and alert the driver if another car is approaching towards it. In the latest addition, Around View monitor designed by Infiniti enables a 360-degree live view while using a computer mechanism to mix four camera feeds. Infiniti’s Around View is already available on BMW’s 5 and 7 series in a$2,500 optional package.

1. Self-Driving.

Cars will be driven on their own in the near future as this system is already innovated under Google Self-Driving Car project. This project was led by Google engineer, Sebastian Thrun, who is also the co-inventor of Google Street View and former director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. The first autonomous car, a Toyota Prius modified with Google’s experimental driver-less technology was registered in April 2012 under Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles after the Nevada law for self-driving cars went into effect on March 1, 2012. Florida became the second state to allow the testing of independent vehicles on public roads while California became the third. Google has already presented the latest prototype of their driver-less car that had neither steering wheel nor pedals on May 28, 2014.

You would also like to know that By 2040, half of all new cars coming off the production line will be hybrids with energy-storing body panels according to Exxon Mobil. A group of nine auto manufacturers in Europe is currently researching body panels made of polymer fiber and carbon resin that can store energy and charge faster than conventional batteries. According to Volvo, these panels could reduce a car’s weight by up to 15 percent. Isn't that great!

6. Intelligent Headlights.

High-beam LED lights that detect oncoming vehicles and prevent the high beams from causing glare is already incorporated in many cars such as Mercedes, Audi and Mazda. This technology is capable of shading the precise areas of the headlight that would cause the other driver to experience glare when the system detects another vehicle coming from the opposite direction. On the other hand, active cornering headlight system processes the computerized data from speed and steering angles and swivels the main beams accordingly. This feature will illuminate the road in front of the vehicle while traditional headlights tend to illuminate the side of the road when turning. Audi and BMW are also racing to be the first carmakers to offer laser lights instead of traditional LED in a production car.

5. Adaptive Cruise Control.

Cruise control in Modern cars is more than just maintaining a constant speed. With the help of Adaptive cruise control, the car itself will be able to turn the steering. This technology uses sensor and radar systems to adjust the steering and the throttle of the car with changing traffic flow or road without any cooperative support from other vehicles like V2V connectivity. The control is imposed based on sensor information from on-board sensors only. Mitsubishi was the first automaker to offer a laser-based ACC system marketed as “Preview Distance Control” in 1995 on the Japanese version of Diamante. Acura first introduced Adaptive Cruise Control integrated with a Collision Mitigation Braking System in the late 2005 in the United States.

4. Intelligent Braking System.

With this technology, the brakes of the future cars will be automatically engaged without any driver input to prevent possible collisions, while the Brake-Operated Pre-crash Seatbelts will help to mitigate injuries. The vehicle itself will assists the driver’s braking action according to the situation, whereas this system will also deliver a warning buzz to prompt action by the driver to help avoiding a rear-end collision. This system depends on cross feed input from different sensors, radars, video cameras, ultrasonic emitters and even modern GPS technology. This system can prevent or lessen the impact in 1.9 million crashes a year according to The IIHS. Acura’s new RLX sedan already features a “Brake Hold” button that will keep the brakes pressed automatically.

3. V2V Connectivity.

Future cars will communicate with each other with Vehicle to Vehicle connectivity and share information such as distance between the cars, speed and direction. It works by using wireless signals to send information between cars. MIT engineers are working on V2V algorithms that calculate information from surrounding cars to determine the best evasive measure if another car started coming into its projected path which will dramatically increase automotive safety. Ford is currently developing an intelligent vehicle system that uses advanced Wi-Fi technology to communicate with each other. In the first run of this prototype, in Ann Michigan’s Arbor, almost 3,000 automobiles equipped with prototype V2V devices have been tested.

Car Talk / Check Out This 10 Cutting Edge Technologies Soon To Be Used In Cars. by Frankestein08(m): 1:19pm On Apr 30, 2015
Scientists, along with Automobile engineers, are trying their best to develop technologically advanced cars in the near future. Many concept cars are already developed with breathtaking aerodynamic design for the purpose of drag elimination which will also be greener, thus allowing less fuel consumption and less CO2 emission. Biofuel cars and electric cars are already on the verge of making sensation on the streets from their concept stages as Tesla has already developed many of the futuristic electric cars in recent years. According to engineers, cars powered by solar energy will dominate the road in the times coming. But, the population is very concerned about whether the technologythey will get in cars in the near future will be within their budget.

Now let get talking:

10. Air-conditioned Seats.

The Cadillac SRX is just one of many new vehicles to offer air-conditioned seats. The standard model for air-conditioned seats was developed by National Renewable Energy Laboratory. This technology enables one to cool down the entire body of the car seats, such as the driver’s as well as the passenger seats. The fabric used on the air-conditioned seat is porous mesh to allow the air flow through it, whereas multiple fans inside the seat produce refrigerated air circulation. The porous covering of the seat allows body’s natural cooling system to work even when sitting down and keeps cool by circulating air across skin while the moving air carries body’s heat away. Mercedes-Benz has also developed exclusive hot stone massage bucket seats for their 2014 S-Class which operates through 14 tiny air bags that inflate and deflate to stimulate the occupant’s backside.

9. Traffic Signs Recognition.

Some of the high-end cars by Audi and Mercedes-Benz use front-facing cameras to identify road signs such as “Speed limit” or “School Ahead” or “Turn Right/Left”. The car can induct the speed limit right in the middle of the information cluster while combining the captured information from road signs with the data contained in the navigation systems. In cooperation by MobilEye and Continental AG, the first TSR systems which recognize speed limits were developed. It was then incorporated for the first time in the redesigned BMW 7-Series, followed by Mercedes-Benz S-Class in late 2008 which can detect the round speed limit signs all across Europe. The TSR also has an additional advantage of being able to support navigation systems with the detection of overhead LED based variable speed limit signs.

8. Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection.

Cadillac first offered night vision in vehicles in 2000. An updated version of the night vision technology by Mercedes called Night View Assist Plus has been available in the S-Class since 2005. In the more recent version of this technology which is already offered in the 2010 E-Class, the new system will pinpoints pedestrians and highlight them on the dashboard display. BMW has a similar technology with a pedestrian identifier that also shows the moving direction of the pedestrian. Volvo has developed a combination of technologies which can identify pedestrians and cyclists, thus allowing avoidance of collisions in urban areas. The modern night vision systems detect infrared light or amplify the available light to detect objects out of range of the main headlights.

7. Augmented Reality Dashboards.

Display Screen on the windshield is already designed for many high-end cars. In the coming days, cars will be able to identify external objects in front of the driver and display information on the windshield about them. BMW has already implemented windshield displays in some of their vehicles which display basic information of the identified object, and now, they are also developing an augmented reality dashboard that will be able to recognize the distance from the object. This system will also display a red box in the windshield showing how to maneuver into the next lane before the collision if any other car approaches towards it. BMW recently projected a video where they uses AR glasses to look at the engine for identifying the parts need to be replaced and then also shows step-by-step instructions on how to fix it.

10) Pan-STARRS.

Pan-STARRS is an acronym for Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System. It is an innovative design for a wide-field imaging facility developed at the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy. In order to observe entire available sky, the engineers combined relatively small collection of mirrors with a large digital camera consequently produced an economical observing system. The prototype single-mirror telescope PS1 is now operational on Mount Haleakala; scientific research program is being undertaken by the PS1 Science Consortium, a collaboration between ten research organizations in four countries. A key objective of Pan-STARRS is to identify and characterize Earth-approaching objects, both asteroids & comets that might create a danger to our planet. It’s also ideal for research in several other astronomical areas, particularly those whichinvolve an aspect of time inconsistency. Pan-STARRS make it to see the Objects in the Inner Solar System and it is also capable to see the object outer the Solar System and now we can see Galaxy properties better than ever before.

2. Sea Lion.

You want a car that goes fast, a car that looks unique, a car that can transition into a speed boat in seconds. Well, there’s a car for you – the Sea Lion prototype: the world’s fastest amphibious “land speed” vehicle. Actually, it’s not technically a car. Witt himself, the designer of car, calls it an Amphibious World Speed Record Competition Vehicle. It was designed to set world records on land and on water. On the road, the Sea Lion clocks in at 125 mph (201km/h). Not terribly impressive, but it’s off the road where the Sea Lion shines. In the water, meanwhile, it can reach respectable speeds of as much as 60 mph (96 km/h). The body of the Sea Lion was made by using TIG-welded 5052 aluminum and CNC-milled.

1. WaterCar Panther.

Is it a Jeep? Is it a speedboat? No, it’s WaterCar’s Panther amphibious vehicle. A Californian-based car company has designed the world’s fastest amphibious car called the Panther, pictured above. For 13 years, Dave March, the founder of Panther has dreamed about building a car that would perform equally well on water as they did on land. In fact, he wanted his cars to reach “freeway”-type speeds in the water. The result was the WaterCar Python, which became the fastest amphibious car in the world, reaching road speeds of over 125 mph (201 km/h) and water speeds of at least 60 mph (96 km/h).

WaterCar’s latest offering is the Panther. WaterCar calls the Panther the “ultimate vehicle” It is capable of reaching water speeds of up to 45mph – almost as fast as an average speedboat – plus can be driven up to 80mph on land. The Panther’s design is based on a Jeep CJ8 Scrambler, however, because the chassis of the Jeep was too heavy for the water, the Panther’s lightweight chassis is made of chromoly steel. Whereas the Python is an amphibious sports car, the Panther is more of an amphibious SUV, as WaterCar claims that it can be driven on all sorts of surfaces, including sand and mud.

6. SeaRoader Lamborghini Countach.

World’s First Amphibious Lamborghini: This is a mid-engined (for ballast) Lamborghini Countach that was modded by SeaRoader aquatecht Mike Ryan to be amphibious. “If it’s got wheels, I’ll make it float!” boasts Ryan, who has also converted jeeps, motorcycles, a London taxi cab and even an ice-cream van into water-going vehicles. As you might imagine, converting a luxury sports car into an amphibious vehicle isn’t a cheap undertaking; According to Ryan, the glass alone cost $3,007. In the water, a hydrofoil at the front of the car lifts the nose of the Countach, while hydraulic activators compress its Formula 1-style suspension system.

5. Gibbs Humdinga.

The 5-seater ‘Humdinga’ concept vehicle is a full-time 4WD powered by a 350 BHP V8 engine, capable of 160 kmh on land and on water at 65 kmh. Designed by Gibbs Technologies, it was publicly announced in February 2012 and was created specifically to access remote and hostile terrain. It uses the same High Speed Amphibian (HSA) technology as the Gibbs Aquada.

4. Hydra Spyder.

An open-top, high speed & high performance amphibious sports vehicle, produced by Cool Amphibious Manufacturers International (CAMI). The Hydra Spyder is an ultra-modern, stylish, retro-looking part sports car, part speedboat. On land, it can reach speeds of at least 125 mph (201 km/h), while in the water it can attain 53 mph (85 km/h). The standard production model weights approximately 3,300 lbs and is powered by a Corvette LS2 6.0 liter V-8 engine rated at 400 h.p., 6000 rpm, and 400 ft. lbs of torque at 4000rpm. The model also includes a 5-speed manual high performance close ratio transmission and front wheel drive with 3.73 – 1 axle ratio.

3. Dobbertin HydroCar.

This aluminum-bodied, meticulously crafted amphibian is unique in that it literally – transforms its shape from ‘LAND MODE’ to ‘WATER MODE’ with the flip of a switch. On land, its full-length articulating sponsons are raised and become the car’s fenders. Upon entering the water, the sponsons are lowered nearly eight inches to transform the car into a tunnel-hulled watercraft within a matter of seconds. It’s main body is made of type 304 stainless steel, so rust will not be a problem. Under the hood, it has a fully dyno-tuned Chevrolet engine that produces 762 horsepower at 5,800 rpm. Originally, the car used a six-bladed propeller. However, according to Dobbertin, this didn’t create enough “bite in the water,” so he replaced it with a four-bladed Rolla stainless steel propeller that was yet to be tested in the water before the HydroCar was sold. Despite required tweaking, it’s still an incredible amphibious vehicle.

Car Talk / Top 10 Incredible Amphibious Cars. (another Technological Mystery) by Frankestein08(m): 6:45am On Apr 15, 2015
Cars that can do more than run on road is undoubtedly a very good idea. Credit goes to WW II for making cars that can swim. And though the largest numbers of incredible amphibious cars were made way back in the 1960s, the prospect of a car that can navigate waterways like a boat continues to attract inventors. Here, below is a list of Top 10 Incredible Amphibious Cars. Have a look!

10. Gibbs Quadski.

This is the Gibbs Quadski, an amphibian that operates as both an ATV and a personal watercraft. Launched in October 2012 by Gibbs Sports Amphibians, the Quadski is a 4-stroke, amphiquad that converts to a personal watercraft. It features a top speed of 72 km/h (45 mph) on both land and water, a proprietary marine jet propulsion system, and wheel retraction. The Quadski can transition between land and water in about five seconds. The Quadski uses Gibbs’ High Speed Amphibian (HSA) technology, which includes more than 300 patents and patents pending worldwide.

9. Amphicar.

The Amphicar is a German amphibious automobile which first produced for sale to the public in 1961. The vehicle was designed by Hanns Trippel and manufactured by the Quandt Group at Lübeck and at Berlin-Borsigwalde. The Amphicar was designed to be marketed and sold in the USA.Compared to most boats or cars, its performance was modest, and only 4000 were produced by 1965. Nevertheless, it is still among the most successful amphibious civilian autos of all time, and still often prized and preserved as novelty collectible automobiles today.

8. Gibbs Aquada.

The Gibbs Aquada is a high speed amphibious car developed by Gibbs Sports Amphibians in New Zealand. It’s neither a modified land carnor a boat with wheels. Instead, it’s a specially designed vehicle that’s equally at home in the water as it is on dry terrain. It is capable of speeds over 160 km/h (100 mph) on land and 50 km/h (30mph / 26 knots) on water. The Aquada made history in March 2004 when Richard Branson piloted one across the English Channel in one hour, 40 minutes and six seconds, a new record.

7. Rinspeed Splash.

Well-known Swiss sportscar tuning firm Rinspeed built an amphibious car in 2004. With complicated hydrofoil design, the vehicle can go with speed 31 mph (50 km/h) on water – which is still pretty fast. Under 30 knots, the Rinspeed can cruise in water like a conventional boat. And on land it’s even quicker, boasting a top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h). This amazing hydro car is powered by natural gas, and it’s the first amphibious vehicle to be fueled by this environmentally-friendly resource. It has a 750cc, two-cylinder, turbo-charged engine, and its integrated hydrofoil design can be deployed at water depths over four feet.
