Health / Re: Please Guys, A Friend Of Mine Needs Help. Is There A Cure To Asthma ? by geniewilliams(m): 6:41pm On Dec 17, 2015
All About Asthma
■What is Asthma?

Asthma is a disease affecting the airways that carry air to and from your lungs. People who suffer from this chronic condition (long-lasting or recurrent) are said to be asthmatic.

The inside walls of an asthmatic's airways are swollen or inflamed. This swelling or inflammation makes the airways extremely sensitive to irritations and increases your susceptibility to an allergic reaction.

As inflammation causes the airways to become narrower, less air can pass through them, both to and from the lungs. Symptoms of the narrowing include wheezing (a hissing sound while breathing), chest tightness, breathing problems, and coughing. Asthmatics usually experience these symptoms most frequently during the night and the early morning.

Asthma is Incurable Asthma is an incurable illness. However, with good treatment and management there is no reason why a person with asthma cannot live a normal and active life

What is an Asthma Episode / Attack? An asthma episode, or an asthma attack, is when symptoms are worse than usual. They can come on suddenly and can be mild, moderate or severe.

What happens during an asthma attack?

■The muscles around your airways tighten up, narrowing the airway.
■Less air is able to flow through the airway.
■Inflammation of the airways increases, further narrowing the airway.
■More mucus is produced in the airways, undermining the flow of air even more.

Asthma Attacks Vary In some asthma attacks, the airways are blocked such that oxygen fails to enter the lungs. This also prevents oxygen from entering the blood stream and traveling to the body's vital organs. Asthma attacks of this type can be fatal, and the patient may require urgent hospitalization.
Asthma attacks can be mild, moderate, severe and very severe. At onset, an asthma attack does allow enough air to get into the lungs, but it does not let the carbon dioxide leave the lungs at a fast enough rate. Carbon dioxide - poisonous if not expelled - can build up in the lungs during a prolonged attack, lowering the amount of oxygen getting into your bloodstream.

Health / Stem Cell (the Marvel Of Man ) by geniewilliams(m): 6:24pm On Dec 17, 2015
Stem cells are undifferentiated biological cells that can differentiate into specialized cells and can divide (through mitosis) to produce more stem cells. They are found in multicellular organisms. In mammals, there are two broad types of stem cells: embryonic stem cells, which are isolated from the inner cell mass of blastocysts, and adult stem cells, which are found in various tissues. In adult organisms, stem cells and progenitor cells act as a repair system for the body, replenishing adult tissues. In a developing embryo, stem cells can differentiate into all the specialized cells—ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm but also maintain the normal turnover of regenerative organs, such as blood, skin, or intestinal tissues.

There are three known accessible sources of autologous adult stem cells in humans:

1.Bone marrow, which requires extraction by harvesting, that is, drilling into bone (typically the femur or iliac crest).
2.Adipose tissue (lipid cells), which requires extraction by liposuction.
3.Blood, which requires extraction through apheresis, wherein blood is drawn from the donor (similar to a blood donation), and passed through a machine that extracts the stem cells and returns other portions of the blood to the donor.
Stem cells can also be taken from umbilical cord blood just after birth. Of all stem cell types, autologous harvesting involves the least risk. By definition, autologous cells are obtained from one's own body, just as one may bank his or her own blood for elective surgical procedures.

Adult stem cells are frequently used in medical therapies, for example in bone marrow transplantation. Stem cells can now be artificially grown and transformed (differentiated) into specialized cell types with characteristics consistent with cells of various tissues such as muscles or nerves. Embryonic cell lines and autologous embryonic stem cells generated through Somatic-cell nuclear transfer or dedifferentiation have also been proposed as promising candidates for future therapies.Research into stem cells grew out of findings by Ernest A. McCulloch and James E. Till at the University of Toronto in the 1960s.

PropertiesThe classical definition of a stem cell requires that it possess two properties:

Self-renewal: the ability to go through numerous cycles of cell division while maintaining the undifferentiated state.
Potency: the capacity to differentiate into specialized cell types. In the strictest sense, this requires stem cells to be either totipotent or pluripotent—to be able to give rise to any mature cell type, although multipotent or unipotent progenitor cells are sometimes referred to as stem cells. Apart from this it is said that stem cell function is regulated in a feed back mechanism.
Self-renewalTwo mechanisms exist to ensure that a stem cell population is maintained:

Health / Re: Help,boil In My Mouth,what Do I Do, by geniewilliams(m): 4:45pm On Oct 27, 2015
Also called mouth ulcers, boils in mouth may be referred to as sores on the inner lining of mouth (cheeks and lips), tongue, and gums. Boils in mouth are reddish pink in color and sensitive to hot and spicy foods. Boils are generally filled with pus, which is primarily constituted of white blood cells. What causes sores in the mouth is uncertain, though one of the probable causes could be alteration in dietary pattern. Ulcers or sores in the mouth causes inflammation and irritation and makes chewing and swallowing painful. Also, what causes mouth ulcers in adults is stress. Some of the various forms of boils in mouth are as follows:

Canker Sores: Canker sores are grey-white in color with a pink lining and affect people of all age groups, primarily children. What causes mouth ulcers in children is lack of oral hygiene, deficiency of vitamin C in the diet, or bacterial infection. Canker sores occur on the soft tissue on the inner side of cheeks and lips.
White Sores: White sores occur on the inner side of the cheeks and tongue and are painful. White sores are caused as a consequence of an autoimmune disorder, Lichen Planus. White sores may cause severe discomfort,
Gum Boils: Gum boils are generally a consequence of gum problems like gingivitis. As such, gum boils may be attributed to bacterial infections.

Here are some of the effective home remedies for treatment of sores in the mouth:

One of the effective remedies for the treatment of canker sores in mouth is to gargle with coconut milk at least three times a day. It will help soothe boils or ulcers and promote healing.
An effective remedy to cure canker sores in the mouth is to chew leaves of holy basil, two times a day. You can soak basil leaves in water for fifteen minutes and then chew them to relieve ulcers.
Another useful remedy for sores in the mouth and tongue is to consume citrus fruits like orange, lemon, and grapefruit. These fruits help relieve gum problems as well as soothe boils in mouth.
Intake of yogurt is an effective cure for canker sores.
You can apply a paste of the grounded bark of Indian gooseberry and honey, which is a beneficial mouth ulcers home remedy.
Application of peppermint oil on boils in the mouth is also an effective mouth sore treatment.
Intake of salads with a lot of raw onion also helps relieve mouth ulcers or boils. Onion is a rich source of sulfur, which helps heat boils.
A useful ingredient of mouth ulcers home remedy is salt, which include salts like sodium bicarbonate. You are advised to use toothpaste rich in sodium bicarbonate rather than fluoride.
If you are still wondering what causes mouth ulcers on the tongue, then you must know that deficiency of vitamins and minerals is one of the causes of ulcers. You must eat a lot of fruits and vegetables to supplement the nutritional requirements of the body, thereby relieving ulcers.
An extract of fenugreek seeds in water can be used to gargle and thereby soothe the ulcers.
You can also apply a mixture of vinegar and salt on the boils or ulcers for a minute or so. It can be extremely pricking and painful, but it is very effective.
You must avoid consuming spicy and acrid foods, which otherwise aggravate the condition.
You can also apply turmeric powder mix in glycerin to cure mouth ulcers.
You must not consume animal protein while suffering from mouth ulcers as it may cause acidity, delaying healing. You must avoid eating red meat and fish.
You must also avoid drinking and smoking

Health / Re: Help-hepatitis by geniewilliams(m): 1:20pm On Sep 22, 2015
The word hepatitis comes from the Ancient Greek word hepar (root word hepat) meaning 'liver', and the Latin itis meaning inflammation. Hepatitis means injury to the liver with inflammation of the liver cells. There are five main types of hepatitis and the type is commonly determined by a laboratory test.
Fast facts on hepatitis

Here are some key points about hepatitis.

The five main types of hepatitis are caused by viruses.
Globally, around 250 million people are affected by hepatitis C and 300 million people are estimated to be hepatitis B carriers.
Hepatitis A is caused by consuming contaminated food or water.
Hepatitis B is a sexually transmitted disease.
Hepatitis C is commonly spread via direct contact with the blood of a person who has the disease.
A person can only become infected with hepatitis D if they are already infected with hepatitis B.
Person can become infected with the hepatitis E virus (HEV) by drinking contaminated water.
Hepatitis that cannot be attributed to one of the viral forms of the disease is called hepatitis X.
Hepatitis G is another type of hepatitis caused by a specific virus (HGV).
The initial symptoms of hepatitis are similar to those of flu.

What is the liver?

The liver is the largest gland in the human body. It weighs approximately 3 lb (1.36 kg). It is reddish brown in color and is divided into four lobes of different sizes and lengths. It is also the largest internal organ (the largest organ is the skin). It is below the diaphragm on the right in the thoracic region of the abdomen. Blood reaches the liver through the hepatic artery and the portal vein. The portal vein carries blood containing digested food from the small intestine, while the hepatic artery carries oxygen-rich blood from the aorta.

The liver is made up of thousands of lobules, each lobule consists of many hepatic cells - hepatic cells are the basic metabolic cells of the liver.

The liver has a wide range of functions, including:
Liver
Most liver damage is caused by 3 hepatitis viruses, called hepatitis A, B and C.

Detoxification (filters harmful substances form the blood, such as alcohol)
Stores vitamins A, D, K and B12 (also stores minerals)
Protein synthesis (makes certain amino acids - the building blocks of proteins)
The production of biochemicals needed for digestion, such as bile
Maintains proper levels of glucose in the blood
Produces 80% of your body's cholesterol (cholesterol is vital)
The storage glycogen (also converts glucose to glycogen)
Decomposing red blood cells
Synthesizing plasma protein
The production of hormones
Produces urea (the main substance of urine).

Hepatitis can heal on its own with no significant consequence, or it can progress to scarring of the liver. Acute hepatitis lasts under six months, while chronic hepatitis lasts longer.

Most liver damage is caused by 3 hepatitis viruses, called hepatitis A, B and C. However, hepatitis can also be caused by alcohol and some other toxins and infections, as well as from our own autoimmune process (the body attacks itself).

About 250 million people globally are thought to be affected by hepatitis C, while 300 million people are thought to be carriers of hepatitis B.

Not all forms of hepatitis are infectious. Alcohol, medicines, and chemical may be bad for the liver and cause inflammation. A person may have a genetic problem, a metabolic disorder, or an immune related injury. Obesity can be a cause of liver damage which can lead to inflammation. These are known as non-infectious, because they cannot spread form person-to-person.
Types of hepatitis

There are five main types of hepatitis that are caused by a virus, A, B, C, D, and E - plus types X and G.
Hepatitis A

This is caused by eating infected food or water. The food or water is infected with a virus called HAV (hepatitis A virus). Anal-oral contact during sex can also be a cause. Nearly everyone who develops Hepatitis A makes a full recovery - it does not lead to chronic disease.
Hepatitis B

This is an STD (sexually transmitted disease). It is caused by the virus HBV (hepatitis B virus) and is spread by contact with infected blood, semen, and some other body fluids. You get hepatitis B by:

Unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person (unprotected sex means without using a condom) Using a syringe that was previously used by an infected person (most commonly happens with drug addicts and people who inject steroids).
Having your skin perforated with unsterilized needles, as might be the case when getting a tattoo, or being accidentally pricked. People who work in health care risk becoming infected by accident in this way. Sharing personal items, such as a toothbrush or razor, with an infected person.
A baby can become infected through his mother's milk if she is infected.
Being bitten by someone who is infected.

The liver of a person infected with hepatitis B swells. The patient can suffer serious liver damage due to infection, resulting in cancer. For some patients the hepatitis becomes chronic (very long-term or lifelong). Donated blood is always tested for hepatitis B.
Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is usually spread through direct contact with the blood of a person who has the disease. It is caused by the virus HCV (hepatitis C Virus). The liver can swell and become damaged. In hepatitis C, unlike hepatitis B, liver cancer risk is only increased in people with cirrhosis and only 20% of hep C patients get cirrhosis. Feces is never a route of transmission in hepatitis C. Donated blood is also tested for hepatitis C.

Misuse of anesthesia can result in the transmission of hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses, researchers reported in the journal Gastroenterology. The cause of infection tends to be from anesthesia contamination, and not endoscopy contamination. Experts say that more effort is needed to better educate the health care community about the importance of strict sterile techniques when using any type of anesthesia.
Hepatitis D

Only a person who is already infected with hepatitis B can become infected with hepatitis D. It is caused by the virus HDV (Hepatitis D Virus). Infection is through contact with infected blood, unprotected sex, and perforation of the skin with infected needles. The liver of a person with Hepatitis D swells.
Hepatitis E

A person can become infected by drinking water that contains HEV (hepatitis E virus). The liver swells but there is no long-term consequence. Infection is also possible through anal-MouthAction.
Hepatitis X

If a hepatitis cannot be attributed to the viruses of hepatitis A, B, C, D, or E, it is called hepatitis X. In other words, hepatitis of an unknown virus.
Hepatitis G

This is a type of hepatitis caused by the hepatitis G virus (HGV). Usually there are no symptoms. When there are symptoms, they are very mild

Health / Re: Whitlow Infection Urgent Advice by geniewilliams(m): 10:38am On Sep 17, 2015
A herpetic whitlow, or whitlow finger, is an abscess of the end of the finger caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus (the "cold sore virus"wink. It usually affects the fleshy area of the fingertip.
What are the symptoms?
The fingertip suddenly becomes red, swollen and extremely painful.Small white blisters develop underneath the skin of the finger, which may break to release fluid, eventually crusting over.
What's the cause?
There are two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV), type 1 and type 2.
Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can cause a herpetic whitlow. These viruses can also cause cold sores and genital herpes.
A herpetic whitlow can develop as a secondary infection if you already have a cold sore or genital herpes and you touch the sore area of skin, transferring the virus from your mouth or genitals to your finger.
It can also develop if you touch the sore or blister of another infected person. You're at greater risk of becoming infected if you have a weakened immune system.

The herpes virus remains dormant (inactive) in nerve cells and may reactivate at a later date, sometimes following stress or an illness. This can result in another whitlow at the same site as the first one

If a whitlow does return, it can be treated in the same way, with an antiviral product

If the whitlow returns often, the antiviral drug can be given for long periods of time (years) to reduce the number of times it comes back. This suppressive antiviral treatment will also reduce both the severity of the whitlow and the length of time it takes to heal.

Health / Re: How To Easily Prevent Sagging Breasts Naturally by geniewilliams(m): 2:38pm On Aug 31, 2015
Every woman wants to have perfectly shaped breasts throughout her life. Sadly, this is not possible in most cases. Breast sagging is a natural process that happens with age wherein the breasts lose their suppleness and elasticity.

Though saggy breasts usually start happening after a woman reaches 40, it can occur earlier. Apart from age, other factors that cause sagging breasts include breastfeeding, pregnancy, menopause, rapid weight loss or gain, strenuous exercise, nutritional deficiencies and wearing a poorly fitting bra.

Some diseases like breast cancer or respiratory conditions like tuberculosis can also cause breasts to sag. Also, excessive consumption of nicotine, alcohol and carbonated beverages can contribute to the problem.Breasts do not have muscle. They are made of fat, connective tissues and milk-producing glands, and they need proper care to keep them in good shape.

Health / The Female Ovary And Ovarian Cyst by geniewilliams(m): 8:55am On Aug 28, 2015
What is the ovary ?

The ovary is one of a pair of reproductive glands in women that are located in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus. Each ovary is about the size and shape of a walnut. The ovaries produce eggs (ova) and female hormones estrogen and progesterone. The ovaries are the main source of female hormones, which control the development of female body characteristics such as the breasts, body shape, and body hair. They also regulate the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. Ovarian cysts are closed, sac-like structures within an ovary that contain a liquid, or semisolid substance. "Cyst" is merely a general term for a fluid-filled structure, which may or may not represent a tumor or neoplasm (new growth). If it is a tumor, it may be benign or malignant. The ovary is also referred to as the female gonad.

What causes ovarian cysts?

Ovarian cysts form for numerous reasons. The most common type is a follicular cyst, which results from the growth of a follicle. A follicle is the normal fluid-filled sac that contains an egg. Follicular cysts form when the follicle grows larger than normal during the menstrual cycle and does not open to release the egg. Usually, follicular cysts resolve spontaneously over the course of days to months. Cysts can contain blood (hemorrhagic cysts) from leakage of blood into the egg sac.

Another type of ovarian cyst that is related to the menstrual cycle is a corpus luteum cyst. The corpus luteum is an area of tissue within the ovary that occurs after an egg has been released from a follicle. If a pregnancy doesn't occur, the corpus luteum usually breaks down and disappears. It may, however, fill with fluid or blood and persist as a cyst on the ovary. Usually, this cyst is found on only one side, produces no symptomsand resolves spontaneously.

Endometriosis is a condition in which cells that normally grow inside as a lining of the uterus (womb), instead grow outside of the uterus in other locations. The ovary is a common site for endometriosis. When endometriosis involves the ovary, the area of endometrial tissue may grow and bleed over time, forming a blood-filled cyst with red- or brown-colored contents called an endometrioma, sometimes referred to as a chocolate cyst. The condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by the presence of multiple small cysts within both ovaries. PCOS is associated with a number of hormonal problems and is the most common cause of infertility in women.

Both benign and malignant tumors of the ovary may also be cystic. Occasionally, the tissues of the ovary develop abnormally to form other body tissues such as hair or teeth. Cysts with these abnormal tissues are really tumors called denign cystic teratomas or dermoid cysts.

Infections of the pelvic organs can involve the ovaries and Fallopian tubes. In severe cases, pus-filled cystic spaces may be present on, in, or around the ovary or tubes. These are known as tubo-ovarian abscesses.

Health / Re: Comments Needed : How To Stop After Sex Vaginal Odour And Body Odour ( M & F) by geniewilliams(m): 1:58pm On Aug 27, 2015
Vaginal discharge serves an important housekeeping function in the female reproductive system. Fluid made by glands inside the vagina and cervix carries away dead cells and bacteria. This keeps the vagina clean and helps prevent infection.

Most of the time, vaginal discharge is perfectly normal. The amount can vary, as can odor and hue (its color can range from clear to a milky white-ish), depending on the time in your menstrual cycle. For example, there will be more discharge if you are ovulating, breastfeeding, or are sexually aroused. The smell may be different if you are pregnant or you haven't been diligent about your personal hygiene.

None of those changes is cause for alarm. However, if the color, smell, or consistency seems significantly unusual, especially if it accompanied by vaginal itching or burning, you could be noticing an infection or other condition.

What causes abnormal discharge?

Any change in the vagina's balance of normal bacteria can affect the smell, color, or discharge texture. These are a few of the things that can upset that balance:

Antibiotic or steroid use
Bacterial vaginosis, a bacterial infection more common in pregnant women or women who have multiple sexual partners
Birth control pills
Cervical cancer
Chlamydia or gonorrhea (STDs), sexually transmitted infections
Diabetes
Douches, scented soaps or lotions, bubble bath
Pelvic infection after surgery
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Trichomoniasis, a parasitic infection typically contracted and caused by having unprotected sex
Vaginal atrophy, the thinning and drying out of the vaginal walls during menopause
Vaginitis, irritation in or around the vagina
Yeast infections

Health / Re: How Can She Treat Her Diabetes by geniewilliams(m): 11:55am On Aug 27, 2015
Diabetes is a metabolism disorder

Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is classed as a metabolism disorder. Metabolism refers to the way our bodies use digested food for energy and growth. Most of what we eat is broken down into glucose. Glucose is a form of sugar in the blood - it is the principal source of fuel for our bodies.

When our food is digested, the glucose makes its way into our bloodstream. Our cells use the glucose for energy and growth. However, glucose cannot enter our cells without insulin being present - insulin makes it possible for our cells to take in the glucose.

Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas. After eating, the pancreas automatically releases an adequate quantity of insulin to move the glucose present in our blood into the cells, as soon as glucose enters the cells blood-glucose levels drop.

A person with diabetes has a condition in which the quantity of glucose in the blood is too elevated (hyperglycemia). This is because the body either does not produce enough insulin, produces no insulin, or has cells that do not respond properly to the insulin the pancreas produces. This results in too much glucose building up in the blood. This excess blood glucose eventually passes out of the body in urine. So, even though the blood has plenty of glucose, the cells are not getting it for their essential energy and growth requirements
