Wondakind:The article hinted it. Banks use next of kin to know who they will hand over the dead person's money to. However, that doesn't mean he has right to spend it. It only means the deceased trusts the person to carry out the necessary responsibilities after their demise. So, if you're your friend's next of kin, you should ensure that his money after his death is spent as he has willed it or at least ensure it is spent on training his orphaned children and widowed wife. Not spend it on yourself. 4 Likes |

SmartyPants:You should accept the correction. You misunderstood my point. PS: I have no problem with honing up if I err. I designed and manage the site in my signature. I've built wordpress sites for clients in Nigeria and beyond. So, saying I know nothing about WordPress is nothing but a defeatist statement. |

Moonlight111:If those themes and plugins addressed all possible problems in existence, there wouldn't be any need for anyone to build a new plugin or theme. But everyday, we see new themes and plugins added to the WordPress repository. Problem no dey finish so WordPress (and no CMS or framework) can solve all possible problems. |
Webmasters / Re: Web Programming Language Vs Content Management Systems by GeoAfrikana(m): 1:30pm On May 04, 2021 |
Dear OP. I'm in a good position to answer your question. I've built websites and blogs with wordpress and Google blogger. I've also done projects with Django (a Python web framework). When I was building websites with WordPress, I had only some knowledge of HTML and CSS. No working knowledge of JavaScript. And till today I have no working knowledge of PHP. Yes, wordpress is powerful. It gives you the ability to build something powerful within a short period of time. With thousands of themes, there's almost no way you won't find your taste. You can also use plugins to power the funtionality of your website. However, as you progress in your career, you'll realize that you need to personalize some experiences for your (client's) website. And the only way you can do this is by getting your hands dirty in code. For example, your client likes a theme you installed but wants a little tweak which the theme customizer has no option. You'll have to write some custom HTML, CSS or JavaScript to do that. I remember a theme I worked with didn't put bullets in the list of recent posts on the sidebar. I was able to change it because I knew some HTML and CSS. Also, in the backend. Imagine you want to build a bulk SMS portal. Your service provider will only give you an API. As at the last time I checked there was no way to consume a bulk SMS API in wordpress. So you just have build your own site from scratch. Also, scalability, security and sustainability. Even if you want to build with WordPress, as soon as your site reaches a certain stage you'll see the need to hire developers for good maintenance. Finally, you might need bespoke functionality like (geo)data analysis. If you can't code, there's no way you can do it. In conclusion, WordPress is only good for generic websites like portfolio sites and blogs because you're working with readymade templates. 5 Likes |

misterjosh: Yes, I have. The course is intensive and isn't meant for absolute beginners. It's supposed to be taken after CS50: Introduction to computer science. In CS50 you'll learn: - how computers work (binary) - how to think like a computer using a game called 'scratch' - before going to C, a low level programming language - you'll also learn a high level programming language like python. I once took CS50 but didn't complete it. But if you've learnt basic python before then you're good to take CS50W. 1 Like |

Programming / My Experience With Havard's Web Programming Course (CS50W) by GeoAfrikana(m): 7:17pm On Apr 29, 2021 |
August last year, I enrolled for Havard's CS50W: Web Programming with Python and JavaScript. To be honest, the course was far from easy. It was supposed to take 3 months but I spent 6 months. The course featured six projects including one final project. Project 0: Search Design a frontend for Google search. This took me two months to complete. It requires just HTML and CSS. I used bootstrap to support my weak CSS. Project 1: Wiki Design a wikipedia-like web app. The app must allow users to enter data in markdown format but should display as HTML. So your backend must convert markdown to html. There are about five more specifications. Project 2: commerce Design a e-commerce website that allows users sign in, upload a product for auctioning, bid on a product. Once the product owner closes the auction, the highest bidder should automatically be declared winner. Project 3: Mail Design an app that enables users send and read mail. The app must be a one-page app. Meaning that there should be no page throughout the whole functionality of the app. So you must use Asynchronous JavaScript loading (Ajax). Project 4: Network Design a social media app that lets users create posts, edit posts and like posts. It should also be a single page app and must use pagination. Project 5: Capstone This is the final project. No rigid specification except that it must be different from all other past projects in the course. Also, it must make use of at least two models (Django developers know this). I built a quiz app that that enables visitors create an account, sign in and logout. Registered users can take the quiz. Users who have above a certain score can submit questions. I the quiz page uses Ajax so once you submit a question, it displays another question without reloading the page. The app also uses the inbuilt Django admin to enable superusers approve a submitted question among other functions. This Youtube playlist shows the demonstration of each of my projects: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL__WA5iiRT528Lwzr1l-tBDRZREArcnEm My tips and advise 1. It's not going to be easy. In fact it looks impossible but it's possible. At some time you'll be clueless but the clue will always come later. 2. Sometimes you might need to take some days off to watch videos on youtube. 3. There are notes on the website. Read the notes. 4. Pay. If you're taking it for free, you might not be serious. However, apply for scholarship to reduce the cost. 5. You don't need to be extraordinarily brilliant. You just need to be perseverant. Good luck. 11 Likes 1 Share

Programming / Re: Why Are Developers Crazy About Startup Jobs? by GeoAfrikana(m): 3:35pm On Apr 29, 2021 |
philcz: CSTRR: No one is asking anyone to change. In fact, many companies are still using Python 2. The OP was asking why many developers are crazy about startups and I provided an answer to that. A typical young (web) Developer starts their career with PHP, python and/or JavaScript. So, it's only normal for them to search for companies that use those technologies which are usually startups. Many developers learn .NET and other old frameworks after joining a company. I have examples. 1 Like |

Karleb: Exactly, imagine some companies still using .net framework in 2021. When there are cool and hot frameworks like Django, Node, Laravel etc. Open-source is making giant waves yet those old companies are still spending hundreds of millions for Adobe, Microsoft and others. |
