hello akanniade,
you mean the price of original 280w suntech solar panel is now 65k in lagos?

kindly confirm,

thanks.

shithapuns: wow nice one @ da lover!!!....how much did u get the 280watts solar panels?
@ georger d....what type of cutout do u recommend?..i learnt the normal ac cutout isnt good?..so which one do u recommend?..u hv an amazon link?

shithapuns,

you can use normal phcn cut-out fuses for your solar installation. however, the problem lies with
circuit breakers mainly due to their design and mode of operation. normal ac circuit breakers should
not be used on solar installations. always use special dc rated types so as to avoid arching and fire
outbreak.

hello dalover,
congrats on your installation. i'm especially impressed with your battery rack design.
very compact and neat. did you consider installing a cut-out fuse between the battery
bank and charge controller and also between the solar array and controller? very important
for safety.

@kd10,
olenyi is right. Even though those same packages have existed on Intelsat 903 at 34W for such a long time,
they were placed on the North Eastern beam which covers Europe, Asia, etc excluding West Africa. By doing
this, the service providers never meant for us to be able to track them. However, those same channels are
now on Intelsat 904 at 60E. Not only that, they have been placed on the Western Hermisphere which covers
every part of this country. Not only that, they are free! That, my brother is the reason for the
hulabaloooo! smiley grin

Oga George, thanks for the call u made on getting my missed call. Am still expecting ur input. But i wish i could afford an MPPT stuff. Well am managing my PWM.

hello abunafiu,
it was a pleasure talking to you. for a 100ah, 12v set up, i should think you're already getting very good value for your money.
however if you want to go further than what you're doing at the moment the best option will be an upgrade where you may consider
adding more batteries (to extend your run time) and adding more solar panels so that you could allow the fridge to run a little
longer than two hours during the day.

olenyi:

I always felt bad seeing these channels being broadcast as FTA in other parts of the world even north africa whereas we had to pay to watch them here. Always thought charity should begin at home.

Lets hope they stay FTA for long.

With the coming of amos 5, ab7, turksat 2a, etc, i believe these guys are now realising the heightened satellite awareness and potential market opportunities inherent in this part of africa and are gearing up to give our almighty BB a run for their money. grin

Let the monopoly stop and the competitions begin. We'll all be the better for it. wink

Regards.

@olenyi,
Exactly my thoughts. When you look all over the arc from Intelsat 902, 906, NSS7, etc, you will see the Kenyan Mux, Ugandan Mux,
and all sorts of targeted packages designed to cater to local viewing population for those catchment areas. I always wondered
why we couldn't have something like that packaged for our country. But thank God it is here at last. The Nigerian Mux
must endure just like all those other packages have done for these many years now. Any attempt by big brother to muzzle this
commendable initiative will be highly resisted!

@George_D
I did try to nail the bird today with out success . . .does it have to do with my C-Band LNB-F (inserted die-electric?),because i noticed i find it difficult nailing birds with R and L cyclic polarities. more information needed here.

@freshp,
Intelsat 904 is a circular polarised satellite and as such you need a di-electric inserted in the LNB throat
to track it.

After ensuring you have inserted the di-electric plate properly, change R to V on your decoder.
Thus the frequency for Channels TV becomes 3745v 18313sr.

Try tracking again and see how it goes.

P.S: Remember the LNB skew should be in the 10 o' clock position, facing EAST.

lovala:
Hello king George, long time. My problem with that set of channels is that I can't tell whether they are HD or not because while it was passing at my friends decoder which is a technosat HD decoder it will be picked up by t he blindscan at my end and even show green but with no channels popping up. Any which ways sha, thankx all d same. I hope they get tru dia test transmission phase and get stable.

@lovala,

Sometimes when a particular channel exits a TP, the satellite provider does not switch off that transponder
immediately. They may still leave it on for a while. Maybe a few days, a few weeks or even months. But eventually
the service provider then switches it off and it goes red. All that time whereby the TP was left on, it can still be tracked
with any compliant decoder - provided it is configured properly. However since the channel has left the TP, there will be
nothing to display even if the signal quality is as high as 100%.
Different service providers have different reaction times regarding switching off transponders following the
exit of stations previously hosted by them.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Free To Air Satellite Tv General Thread by GeorgeD1(m): 4:44pm On Mar 21, 2013
@lovala,
Some channels on Amos 5 are transient, i.e they are here today and gone tomorrow. Examples are DD india and Ifilm.
They were there for a while but suddenly disappeared. If the channels you're talking about falls within this category,
even if you blindscan till tomorrow you may not be able to get them again irrespective of what type of reciever
you use for the blindscan.

Hope this helps?

kiretiv: hi guys am new into the solar stuff, just installed a couple but am not getting the max benefits. I got 12pcs of 280watt panels on a 60watt charge controller with 16pcs of 12v 150ah batteries but my batteries still don't get beyond 49v at the end of the day. I see in George D pix having 57v which is amazing. I want to know if my set up is having issues or another charge controller need to be added. fyi I use same charge controller as George D, and my arrays setup is 2 panels in series and 6 parallel. thanks

kiretiv,

you sent me a mail a while back and i offered some suggestions. i expected you to get back to me so we can go
further on this but apparently seems you prefer this option.
all the same, with a total installed solar array of 3360w and a 600ah battery bank, you should really not be
having issues at all.

i don't know how you wired your system but i will advise that:

1) for the solar panels, try and wire them in strings of 3 X 4 each. you will now have three panels in series
and four in parallel instead of 2 X 6 which is your present configuration.

2) how far is the distance between your battery bank and the solar array? what is the size of your cables?
try and reduce the distance between your battery bank and solar panels (shorter distance means lower voltage drop).
but if reducing the distance between battery bank and solar array is not possible, then consider upgrading your
cables to at least 16mm thickness (optimum size should be about 32mm really).

take my case for example. i started off with 6mm thick cables but over time as i kept adding more solar panels,
i realized that i needed to upgrade my cables so i changed out the old 6mm cables and installed 16mm multi-core.

if you have cables that are not optimal to carry the current supplied by your array, you not only risk fire but
your array voltage at the battery end will also suffer.

3) lastly, check that your battery bank is wired correctly. those 16pcs batteries should be in 4 strings of 48v
with each tied together. if you have them in any other configuration then you are doing the wrong thing.
kindly check some of my battery bank snapshots and see if you could replicate same at your end. when tying the
strings together, avoid the usual practice of taking one end to continue from where the last one stopped. install
the batteries in 48v blocks, i.e 4 each in series and then tie the positive ends of all 4 strings together. also tie the
negative ends of all 4 strings together. this will ensure that all four strings get the same amount of charging current
at all times regardless whether you're charging with phcn or solar (look up my voltage combiner in some of my pix).

if after you have done all this and the problem still persist, then remove the batteries one by one and check
their condition. you may have one or more dead batteries in your battery bank.identify the faulty battery
(or batteries) and replace it (them) and you'll be fine.

p.s: i left out the charge controller because i assume you know already how to configure it properly for a 48v battery bank?

bodejohn: @ Totalgreen, you are welcome on board.

I have since changed all my panels to 120watts and the results were very impressive. The 100watts panels are resting now till i can buy another charge controller and 2 more 100watt panels or maybe I OLX it.

My battery bank is 24v and I am not using a Sukam inverter. My panels are connected in 2 strings, each with 3 panels giving my MPPT charger an average of 60v.

Our "Oga at the top" (George D), it's been some time.

bodejohn,

lol! i've been a bit busy lately but i do always stop by to check activities on the thread.

you seem to be getting very optimal performance from your array, which goes to show just how much

effort you put into doing a proper research before venturing into your installation.

cheers and keep up the good work.

@kd10,

I think Intelsat 907 (27.5°W) is still your best bet. However, on my 3-in-1 setup I'm getting RTP Europa
and RTP Africa both up to 54% quality so I was just wondering how they would fare on a 1m dish.

But like I said before, everything and anything is possible in FTA so please go ahead and let's see
how it works out. Break the myth! VIVA FTA!!!

@kd10,
Use 3838V 7235sr. Remember this is a circular polarised satellite so you need to insert a dielectric
inside the lnb throat.

Although, I'm a bit curious as to how you hope to track this sat with a 90cm dish, I know in FTA anything
is possible so please go ahead and when you're done share your experience with the house. Viva FTA!!!
