But is it the fault of the students or the government and regulating bodies that approved them? There are better ways to ensure a win-win situation.

what are some of the 'better ways'?

anyone noticed how blackberry has stepped up their advert on the airwaves these past few weeks?

Akerekoroabijawara: @George D, pls,is it appropriate to use 260ah zenith battery with my luminous 0.8kva inverter. Becos I'm planning to buy 260ah zenith battery next week

no, your 0.8kva inverter charging output will be way too small to charge such a big battery effectively.

for best charging performance think of getting at least minimum of 1.5 or 2kva inverter if you can afford it.

idsolar: Thank u. it seems buyright is d way for cyberpower or is there better way?

yes, indeed. your best bet is buyright for cyberpower.

hello daLover,
you are right up to a point. besides the voltage sense cable you mentioned, the morningstar charge controller also has a temperature sensor which helps to vary charging voltage according to changes in battery temperature.

besides all these however, a truly efficient inverter/charger must have a multi-stage charging algorithm inbuilt and must have a way of monitoring the actual state-of-charge (soc) of the battery bank. that is where the high end inverters like xantrex, magnum, tripllite, outback, sma, etc have an edge over the others. not only are they true 4 - stage chargers, their charging parameters are also adjustable over a range of options. besides, they do include optional battery monitoring devices, which together with their multi-stage charging abilities do give a complete charging regimen for optimal battery life.

so, in a nutshell the high end inverters mentioned above have true multi-stage charging abilities which in most cases are configurable to meet the user's need while the mid-range ones like sukam, cyberpower, nexus, luminous, genus, mopower, etc are just bulk chargers which charge your batteries up to a point and do cut off charging immediately the inverter senses that the battery bank has achieved a particular voltage. they are not true 3 or 4-stage chargers like the high end models. here lies the key difference and that is why they are more expensive.

SELFWORTH:

Fashola is known for taking rash decisions without thinking about the effect on ordinary tax paying citizens. He has made no plans on what will happen to all those who rely on these organisations for education, salary etc. He pulled down so many houses in Lagos with no provision on where the inhabitants should go under the pretence of alleviating flood. Some of those houses were built in the 70s before subsequent government built canals next to them through no fault of their own. What has happened since? Nothing!!! A little rain still causes so much flooding in many parts of Lagos and Ikorodu. The drainage in the city is still as bad as it was before he rendered so many people homeless. If this is how global nations like UK, USA run their countries all Nigerians including himself will not be desperate to emigrate and leave the shambles of Nigeria behind. Mr Destroyer. He destroys things just to make a name for himself because like all politicians he is too rich to be affected by the aftermath of his shambolic backward looking policies.

you obviously have a score to settle with baba fash, as i see it wink

here, still at absorption more than 2hrs after inverter has cut off charging:

Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by GeorgeD1(m): 1:00pm On Oct 19, 2012
after a couple of hours of combined charging, inverter charger has now cut off with status indicating 'battery charged'. at this stage the batteries are only about 85% full as far as the solar charge controller is concerned. therefore you can see that the solar charger has continued to charge the batteries. rather than cutting off charging at this stage it has entered 'pwm' (absorption) mode. this is the last 15% stage of the charging process i was talking about and it will take another couple of hours to exit this mode after which the batteries would have been 100% charged.

Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by GeorgeD1(m): 12:43pm On Oct 19, 2012
solar charge controller is still in bulk mode:

Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by GeorgeD1(m): 12:39pm On Oct 19, 2012
firstly, there was power outage the previous evening so we were on backup power for the better part of the night (a typical scenario). by 9am the following morning the sun was already up and solar panels were working to restore lost energy to the battery bank. the weather was a bit cloudy so panels could not put out their best. but by midday charge controller was already indicating battery bank state-of-charge (soc) to be about 65% full. then around 2pm, public power was restored. inverter began charging battery along with the solar charger:

hello daLover,
i monitored my system intermittently yesterday and i now have some pix to further explain the complementary nature of inverter and charge controllers charging of hybrid battery banks.

before i continue let me quickly say that even though the info here is specific to sukam inverter/morningstar charge controllers, the same thing applies to other combinations of inverters and solar chargers except for a few exceptions like xantrex, magnum, tripplite, sma, etc which have true 4 - stage charging algorithms built into their inverters.

idsolar: George D good work. i de swallow saliva for d main time sha. pls to enable me take a better decision between sukam and cyberpower which one will u go for?

idsolar,
to be honest with you, i'd go for sukam any day. don't get me wrong though. depending on your circumstances, both of them are good products. for inverter sizes of 3.5kva and below go for sukam but for sizes of 5kva and above, go for cyberpower.

the only drawback of sukam is it's low charging rate (15 - 20amps) as against cyberpower's 45amps. so if you have a large battery bank such as mine and don't have an alternative charging source like solar panels pls consider cyberpower but if your battery bank is the normal 4pcs 200amp batteries (48v) then sukam is ok for you.

Akerekoroabijawara: Thanks for your advice. my 6months old 200ah mikachi battery is dead. I have abandon the gaoxing inverter for luminous inverter. Hope luminous inverter is ok too?

akerekoroabijawara,
luminous is a good product. it's of the same family as sukam, genus, nexus, etc
you will enjoy it. best of all you will no longer be having dead batteries of your hands every 6 months!

ile naira: @George, slightly off-topic but,........... with your previous group order of panels/batteries (I've forgotten which it was), what was involved at the port in Lagos? Did you have any import tax or other payments or any other wahala? Is the tax based on the value of the goods (or arbitary shocked)

I'm about to agree a price for a batch of batteries and panels but I've no experience of Lagos ports. Any suggestions?

Thanks

hello ile naira,
unfortunately the group order was put off due to lack of interest by members. however had it taken off, one of the conditions for the transaction was that my contact in canada would have been solely responsible for transportation and clearing of the goods (including import charges, offloading, etc) all we needed to have done is to go and inspect the goods after they arrive his store in nigeria and pay whatever balance of the pre-order amount involved. no doubt it was such a good opportunity we missed and it still pains me till date.
