Politics / 10 Things That Keep Nigerians Talking About Lai Mohammed by Gerarahere: 4:31pm On Feb 18, 2016
Lai Mohammed, former
spokesman of the All
Progresive Congress and the
current minister of Information
is one politicians that has got
Nigerians talking in recent times. From the time he was APC
spokesman, till now that he is
a minister, Lai has continued
to keep the people informed
about national issues. One
thing that people keep attacking him for, is his
continuous blame game. It
appears former president
Goodluck Jonathan is to
blame for every bad situation
in the country. Let’s take a look at some of
the reasons why Lai
Mohammed has been on the
lips of Nigerians. 1. When he said Boko Haram
had been defeated despite
recent attacks. 2. Then he blamed former
president, Goodluck Jonathan
for fuel scarcity. 3. He told Nigerians that the
fuel scarcity would last for a
few days but it ended up
lasting for weeks. 4. When he said the federal government has been fighting
corruption, but corruption has now started to fight back the
government. 5. That time Nigerians lambasted him for saying Jonathan bought expired and
substandard weapons to fight
the Boko Haram insurgency. Maybe we Shld Beg Ozil to
Assist Lai Mohammed 2
become a truthful fellow.E.g
he said GEJ Bought no
arms,later he said He
Bought Okirika arms — JAGABAN
(@UNCLE_AJALA) February 18, 2016 6. In defence of President
Muhammadu Buhari’s frequent
foreign trips, he said Nigeria
was becoming a “pariah state”
under Jonathan and the
president was traveling to reverse that status. Lai Mohammed calling
Nigeria a ‘pariah State’
under Jonathan was
barefaced falsehood.
Nigeria was not a pariah
state under Jonathan. — #BringBackOurGirls
(@Nedunaija) February 18, 2016 7. The minister disowned a budgetary allocation of N398 million in the budget of his
ministry for 2016. 8. One time, he said the
spokesman of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) was
untrainable and out of control. 9. So committed to his party
and good at informing the
masses, that he was
appointed minister of
information by President
Muhammadu Buhari. 10. That one time he officially
officially addressed the issue
of some Nigerians saying his
first name ‘Lai’ was
synonymous with ‘lie.’ Those who says that the
devil is a liar have probably
never heard Lai Mohammed

He urged members of the group to channel their grievances to the appropriate quarters and anyone who oversteps his or her boundary would be dealt with. “Members of the group should therefore note that it is an offence punishable under the criminal Law of the Federation of Nigeria for a person to have in his possession or under his control any prohibited firearms without licence or permit.” “The IPOB are advised to be guided in respect of the above as the Police Force is poised to uphold the existing restriction over the use of firearms.” READ ALSO: Ezeife accuses Buhari of trying to reduce Igbo population He assumed Nigerians of his commitment to their safety as the “police force, complemented by other security agencies in the country, will tirelessly and assiduously work towards eliminating any threat to internal security and social disorder.” Meanwhile, all zonal assistant inspector generals and state commands commissioners of police were directed to strictly enforce the laws against the use of illegal firearms across the length and breadth of the country. Business / Naira Depreciates Further To N385/$, N505/£ In Parallel Market by Gerarahere: 12:04am On Feb 18, 2016
By Babajide Komolafe The naira on Wednesday depreciated further to N385 per dollar in the parallel market as demand for foreign exchange intensified in the market. This implies the naira has depreciated by N60 against the dollar this week in the parallel market, when compared with the closing exchange rate of N325 per dollar Friday last week. The currency however remained stable at the official interbank foreign exchange market as the interbank rate closed N199.34. Thus the gap between the interbank and parallel market rates widened to N185.66 per dollar from N127.53 Friday last week. Vanguard investigation also reveals that the naira depreciated against the British Pounds to N505 per pounds in the parallel market implying N65 depreciation when compared with the closing rate of N440 Friday last week. Investigations reveal that the sharp depreciation of the naira in the parallel market this week is driven by increasing demand by importers sourcing dollars to pay for imports from China. According to a BDC operator who spoke on condition of anonymity, “You know China had been on its one month annual holidays. But they resumed work on Monday, and people have to complete payment for goods ordered before the holidays. They had made 30 per cent down payment to order the goods and they now have to pay the 70 percent balance otherwise they will lose the 30 percent. That is why they are desperate and ready to buy dollars at any rate. Meanwhile supply is scarce and those who have dollars are not willing to sell because they might also need the currency soon”. The naira has been on steady decline since Tuesday January 12 2016, when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) stopped weekly dollar sale to BDCs. Prior to this action, the naira traded at N265 per dollar in the parallel market. Consequently the naira has depreciated by N80 in the parallel market since the CBN took the action.

Politics / Ghana Bans Goods From Nigeria, Other Countries-vanguardngr by Gerarahere: 11:28pm On Feb 17, 2016
Ghana has prohibited some items from entry into its domain, following Nigeria’s foot steps that restricted 41 items from access to foreign exchange. Ghana however has placed a ban on some goods from being imported into the country.

Ghanaian Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah stated yesterday that Ghana and Nigeria are said to account for some 68 per cent of the ECOWAS region’s Gross Domestic Product.

Nigeria accounts for almost 10 per cent of Ghana’s foreign trade volume, whereas Ghana is listed as the 9th largest trade partner to Nigeria.

Favourite investment hub In spite of the difficulties, Ghana remains Nigeria’s largest trade partner and favourite investment hub in the West Africa sub-region, as Ghana imports the largest share of all Nigerian oil exports in the West African sub-region. While ‘bagged cement’ is on Nigeria’s prohibition list, Dangote Cement brings in and bags some 750,000 tonnes of cement a year for the Ghanaian market, and is expected to increase this to 1.5 million tonnes by end of this quarter.

The Chief Executive Officer of Ghanaian Association of Ghana Industries stated that there should be a clear letter written to the Nigerians complaining about this, and then also try and use some diplomatic means to quickly resolve it,” “If it does not work then we must also look at countervailing measures…it could be product targeting,” he said. “If we also make it difficult for them to export, then we would have to find common ground,” Kate Quartey-Papafio, CEO of Reroy Cables argued. Even for those who are able to export to Nigeria, you have to get different certificates for different customers and it takes a whole lot of time to get it. It makes the whole thing so cumbersome. You are exporting the same thing but you have to go and get certificates for each of the customers,” she said.

Nigeria has used an “Import Prohibition List” to refuse certain goods entry into that country, including a host of pharmaceutical products.

Also, the Managing Director of Intravenous Infusions Limited, a pharmaceutical company, Mr Richard Okrah noted that his company could have generated an additional 25% of export turnover from the Nigerian market. “We have been making efforts through our agent in Nigeria to get us off this list. But it is becoming a very difficult job for us,” Richard Okrah told the B&FT by phone.

The company, he said, currently produces close to 6million IV fluids of various sizes per year, and that: “We have the capacity to step this up to 15 million because we are installing a new semi-automated plan that should be up and running by the middle of April this year”. He said his company faces no such restrictions from Burkina Faso, Cote D’Ivoire and other countries where it exports to.

– The Nigerian army in a bid to stop the increasing protests by the pro-Biafra groups set to relocate troops to Aba – The army official seeks dialogue with the protesters advising them to shun the violence The Nigerian army plans to relocate one of its brigades to Aba, Abia state, to stop the increasing protest the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign States of Biafra (MASSOB). Brigadier General Lawrence Fejokwu, commanding officer of 14 Brigade Ohafia, noted this adding that Aba had become a hot spot because of the activities of the Biafrans campaigning for the actualization of a sovereign state of Biafra, as well as the revival of kidnapping and sundry crimes. READ ALSO: Gunfire and casualtes reported at IPOB protest in Aba Fejokwu appealed to the activists to halt their protest, overturn their decision to bear arms and channel their grievances to the appropriate authorities. He said: “I have gone around to familiarize myself with my location and men. My decision is that Aba have continued to be a hot spot especially on the activities of IPOB and MASSOB and the issue of kidnapping. To this effect, I have decided to, after due clearance with my boss, the GOC, to relocate our tactical headquarters from Ohafia to Aba to see how far we can go in arresting the situation. “In doing so, I urge the IPOB and MASSOB to rescind their decision to bear arms and stop acts of violence and channel their grievances to the appropriate authorities.” Brigadier rejected reports that soldiers killed protesters in Aba, but accepted some of them were detained and later handed over to the police. He vowed to dialogue with the leadership of the protesting pro Biafra group to persuade them to shun violence and tow the path of peace. READ ALSO: Kanu’s wife reveals why her husband supports Biafra “I don’t mind to dialogue with the pro Biafra groups if that will bring peace. If they want to pray; at the end of it, they should quietly go back to their houses. But in a situation where prayers lead to procession which will disturb the peace of the state, no security agency will sit and watch that happen. We will continue to appeal to them to tow the path of peace. As at today, there is no pro Biafra protester in our custody,” Fejokwu stated. The protest in Aba turned bloody last month when protesters clashed with security men. Unconfirmed reports said about 30 protesters sustained gunshot wounds and seven died. Am amazed how people discuss my tribe everyday, either for or against.
There is no day I have come to nairaland ,without seeing a topic on igbos or biafra or ipob or Masson.
I read and read and see what people say about us.

Ever since I join nairaland,I saw e-wars especially with the yorubas,I saw hate, anger, vengeance, heartbreak, tribalism, nepotism, and this has opened my eyes to know who is who,if I have friends from other regions,I despise and spy on them to avoid mistakes.
Nairaland showed me the characters of ethnic groups and am careful.
It happens to be that igbos are the most attacked people in Nigeria, cybertically and physically.
