I need the heifer for foundation stock. do you think I should go ahead?

Try raising them organically since its on a long term basis....
Its economical and aids better in egg laying.
Wish u gd luck bro.

Thank you so much for the reply.
I hope I get this right. I want to start out with about 40 hatchlings, and see where I go from there. If I get it right, I'll probably invest more in turkeys. Luckily, I already have the infrastructures in place.
Again, I appreciate the advice.

Thanks 4 d complements

Concerning d breeding from day old compared to d 6weeks old, I usually advise starters to start with d 6weeks old due to mortality issues.u can raise from day old only if u av d knowledge and av practised severally to a certain level of perfection.

The feeding aspect, u can only feed d female turkeys d layer feed for egg production which will b for human consumption cos it won't b fertilized and thereby cannot hatch but since u av matured males to mate d females, then they will keep laying fertilezed eggs for reproduction.
Note dat d females should consume feed with less fatty formular in order to produce good and healthy eggs.

The selected matured ones u wanna sell for xmas, I don't think they can attain much more weight if u introduce a weight booster feed at this period cos we're just two weeks to xmas but u can try feed with higher concentration of soya meal and pkc...
DammyOlu123:
This is a very educative thread. I really enjoyed it's content. GGfadar, I have a few questions. My parents own a poultry. We started with 1000 layers, but lost a significant number due to an unknown illness. We sold off most of them, and have about 20 left. Surprisingly, throughout this time, the 40+ turkeys we had just continued to thrive. They have started laying eggs, we hatch them to sell as day olds. The eggs have a very high viability rate, as the average hatch rate is about 80%.

I plan on trying my hand at this. I want to take a set of day old turkeys, and raise them at home till about 6 weeks, before moving them to the main farm. This seems a good plan to me, as I already have access to the hatchlings. I read your post on rearing poults to 6 weeks and I'm really grateful for that post.

I'm just a little worried about the mortality rate in poults. Should I sell off the hatchlings and get 6 week old birds instead?

Also, feeding. Is it good practice to give the turkeys the same feed as for layers? If not, what do you recommend? Any other suggestions that can help me? we will collect the batch from the hatchery 2 weeks from now.

Since it's Christmas period, we plan on selling about half of present turkeys. Is there any marsh that can improve their size before then(they are about 9 months old).
I would really appreciate your advice.

What do u expect MR OTDR,
I can't start a livestock farm, especially cattle farm and purchase grown up cows I won't b able to control, not possible for me.
In a year time, the females will b matured enough to conceive. Some of the females might conceive before a year as they're close to 8months before purchased.
This is not piggery, goat or sheep farm where u can buy matured animals to start up.

Concerning the carpet in d troughs as you've mentioned, its to protect feed from water and to cover d lapses on the base of d wooden feed troughs.
The wooden cover of the troughs are with carpets as well, just to protect from rainfall..

OTDR:
I am loving this thread. GGfadar, Im curious, are all your cows too young to conceive? Also, whats the purpose of the sheets on the feeding troughs, or could it be you put them because the floors of the wooden feed troughs have lapses?
