An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure, on Wednesday, sentenced one Adeyemi Seidu to death by hanging for killing his girlfriend, Khadijat Oluboyo.

Khadijat, the daughter of the immediate past deputy governor of the state, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo, was killed by the convict at his house in July 2018.

It was reported that after killing the deceased, Adeyemi buried her corpse in his room for five days but the deed was later exposed by his father, who reported the incident to the Ondo State Police Command.

The convict was said to have deliberately killed the student of the Adekunle Ajasin University for ritual purposes.

Adeyemi was later charged to court on two counts of conspiracy and murder.

During the trial, Adeyemi claimed that he was not the actual killer of Khadijat, saying two of his friends carried out the dastardly act.

He said he was asked to bring a manual digger and a shovel with which to dig the floor for the burial of his late girlfriend after she had been killed.

He also claimed that the supposed killers, whom he could not identify, warned him not to tell anybody about the killing or he too would be killed.

One of the witnesses, a pathologist, Dr Olumuyiwa Pelemo, told the court that the result of the autopsy conducted on the deceased indicated that she had several injuries on her body, which led to her death, adding that there was an abnormal shaving of the hair on her head and pubic region.

Another witness, a brother of the defendant, testified that the family got to know of the killing when Adeyemi confessed to him that Khadijat was dead and buried in his room.

The witness confessed that the convict begged him to get a sack with which to dispose the corpse but he (witness) told their father, who ordered him to report the matter to the police.

The father of the convict, Mr Seidu Siyanbola, a bricklayer, corroborated his younger son’s testimony, adding that he knew the deceased as Adeyemi’s girlfriend and that they had been in a relationship for three years.

He stated that Adeyemi confessed to him that some men killed Khadijat, buried her inside his room and threatened to wipe out his family if he told anyone.

While delivering his judgement on Wednesday, Justice Samuel Bola, said the murder was established through the autopsy report that the deceased did not die a natural death.

He said the court did not believe Adeyemi’s claim that two men killed the deceased and he was asked to bury her in his room without informing the police.

The judge held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt that Khadijat was intentionally killed by the defendant.

The judge thereafter sentenced Adeyemi to death by hanging.

“You, Adeyemi Seidu, is hereby sentenced to death by hanging; may God have mercy on your soul,” Justice Bola said.

In his reaction, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adekola Olawoye (SAN), commended the judgement and said it was victory for the rule of law.

Celebrities / I’m Scared Of My Children’s Future In Nigeria – Actress Kemi Afolabi by GisterBlogger: 1:03am On Mar 16, 2019

Popular Nollywood actress, Kemi Afolabi, recently shared her frustrations with the deplorable state of a government hospital she recently visited in Lagos. In an interview with Saturday Beats, she noted that she was scared for the future of her children in Nigeria due to the irregularities in some significant sectors in the country, like health.

After she shared her frustration on her social media platform, some people noted that they were shocked she uses a government hospital, but she said it was sad people judge celebrities by what they see in movies.

“It is sad that people judge us by the way they see us in movies. I am not rich, I am just a thriving career woman who wants the best for herself and her children. I believe that as an individual, I can walk into any government establishment of which the hospital I went to was one of them. I live in Ikeja, so going to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital wasn’t a bad idea. The government has a whole lot to do.

“There should be government hospitals in residential areas; it doesn’t cost the government anything to do that. The government owes the masses adequate health facilities and good health care. I am going to make more noise about this; they need to start renovating these hospitals. A hospital should be a place where people go to and feel comfortable, not going there and coming back with another ailment. I am sure the government is disbursing funds to the health sector, but it is probably being embezzled.

“I saw a lot of people sleeping on the floor, the drip stands were not sufficient. It is not mere hearsay, I saw these things myself. Bed spaces were not even enough, basic things need to be provided. These are minor things that the government needs to look into. I don’t even think the doctors are properly paid.

“I am extremely scared of the future of my children and the generation to come in this country. I am doing this for the next generation. These people are just wicked, they go to treat themselves abroad and they know how things are done over there. I have lived abroad for about five years and I know how things are done.

“Here, even the air you breathe in the government hospitals is irritating. This is for the future of our children; I was abroad because my husband was based there. I had to come back to focus on my career. For people that have not come back, they have their reasons. When they even hear about the bad things happening in this country, will they want to come back?” she told Saturday Beats.

Speaking about her recent movie, she revealed that she was discouraged by some people when she decided to take it to the cinema. She further talked about why she chose to shoot an all-female cast movie, adding that she used it to address some issues surrounding women and relationships.

“If we can watch other movies in the cinema, then we can also see Yoruba movies. My distributor told me he was surprised by the performance of the movie in the cinema. We can’t even speak the English language properly like the owners so we need to embrace our culture.

“I got the idea for my recent movie when I saw the need to reach out to women going through one phase or the other in their relationships and with their spouses and the likes. I wanted to reach out through this medium to proffer my own solution. I wanted to give women a voice. I wanted them to know that there is a reason why God created men and women to coexist. I wanted them to know that we need one another, regardless of how bad a person’s character is.

“At some point, break-ups and people walking out of their marriages due to domestic violence and other vices were becoming rampant. I had to reflect to see how marriages were handled in the past. For example, my grandpa had seven wives and my grandma was the fourth. I thought to myself that how did grandma cope in that kind of scenario; I realised that patience is a virtue.

“It is not everything that happens in a home that should make people want to walk out of their marriage, we have to learn to coexist and handle our relationships by dealing with each other with wisdom. If women continue walking out of relationships, they don’t know what they are going to face in the next relationship.

“Above all, patience is key. I am happy the movie is doing very well, even though it is in the Yoruba genre. I wasn’t scared of being tagged a feminist. People even told me the movie won’t be accepted in the cinema because it was a Yoruba movie but I wasn’t discouraged,” she said.

Crime / How Father Drugged, Molested 12-year-old Daughter – Doctor Narrates by GisterBlogger: 5:49am On Mar 07, 2019

A medical practitioner, Alagbe Oyedeji, on Tuesday, explained to a Lagos State Special Offences Court how a 37-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Emmanuel Igboko, allegedly drugged and molested his 12-year-old daughter.

Igboko is standing trial before Justice Sybril Nwaka on the charge of sexual assault by penetration.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Igboko allegedly committed the offence at his residence, No. 35 Akewusola Street in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos State.

While being led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, A. O. Alagbe, the doctor, who works at the Department of Family Medicine, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, said the forensic examination conducted on the victim indicated that the vaginal entrance was hyperemic (showing redness).

Oyedeji, who also consults for the Mirabel Centre, noted that the medical examination showed that the anal opening of the victim was loose.

He said, “The victim’s ordeal started in 2016 after she and her sibling moved in with their father after their parents had separated.

“The father came home from work one day and told her that he heard rumours that she was no longer a virgin and that he wanted to examine her by inserting his fingers into her vagina and using his penis to test her virginity.

“He asked her to UnCloth but she was reluctant. When she refused, he beat her and further subjected her to torture. He, however, became nice later and every night after he returned from work, he would give her soft drink and then she would fall asleep and he would have his way.

“It was her constant sleeping in school that drew the attention of her teacher, who asked her what happened and she narrated her ordeal to the teacher, who initially didn’t do anything about it.

“The experience persisted untill she got to a new class and the new teacher asked from the former teacher what had happened to the victim. The new teacher had to take it up and the case was reported at the Ketu Police Station; the father was arrested and the victim was taken to a non-governmental organisation.

“Upon physical examination from head to toe, there were significant findings on her laps; she had multiple linear pattern bruises, which she said she sustained from being beaten with a cane by her father.

“Upon systemic examination of the victim’s vagina, it was discovered that her vagina was hyperemic (showing redness). Her urethra was also reddened.

“I also discovered that her anal opening (anus) was loosened. There were also areas of laceration around the vagina and thighs. The injuries she sustained on her vagina and thighs showed recent and previous forceful penetration.”

Justice Nwaka adjourned the matter till April 3 for the continuation of trial.
