Politics / Nigerians Blast Tinubu’s Government Over VP Shettima's N21bn Residence by hisexcellency34: 5:01pm On Jun 07
Nigerians have blasted President Bola Tinubu for building an official residence for Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the sum of N21bn despite the economic hardship in the country.

The new residence of the Vice President, located adjacent to the office of the Secretary to Government of the Federation was commissioned on Friday. It has an office for the Wife of the Vice President, a mosque, chapel and recreational facilities among other facilities.

Speaking at the ceremony, FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, disclosed that the contract for the Vice President’s residence was first awarded in 2010, at a cost of N7 billion.

He added that the contract was later abandoned in 2015 in its determination to complete the edifice; the current leadership of the FCT in January 2024 sought for and obtained approval for a review of the contract to the sum of N21 billion, leading to its completion 14 years after commencement of the project.

The new residence of the Vice President, located adjacent to the office of the Secretary to Government of the Federation, has an office for the Wife of the Vice President, a mosque, chapel and recreational facilities among other facilities.

When the NTA Network News posted the video of the commissioning on its official Facebook page, many Nigerians condemned the government for extravagant spending while urging the citizens to endure hardship.

Others wonder why a government that cannot pay N100,000 as minimum wage for struggling workers will spend a whopping N22bn on a building for the Vice-President alone.

Osita Nicholas Osita wrote" Every four years construction of VP residence. wasting billions on a house one office holder will live for just 4 yrs. But your citizens are living in squabble, face me I face you, slums, no running water, no access roads. Wish a country".

Umar A DG who also commented on the post wrote "Yet there is no money to make life better for the poor".

While Sadiq Sa'id Ibrahim Alfagaweey said "This is NIGERIA, where wasteful resources became paradigm and competition among the incumbent government", another commenter, Lawal Shehu Kaura described the commissioning as 'misplaced priorities'.

Adeola Akinola Joseph commented "And they still claim that Nigeria is poor".

Few weeks ago, Akin Osuntokun, a former presidential aide, who served as the director-general of the Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign council in the 2023 elections accused the Tinubu administration of engaging in profligacy.

He said "They also budgeted N15 billion to build a mansion for the vice-president. Where was the vice-president staying before? Was he staying in a kitchen? These people just take everything for granted. There is nothing wrong in building a house for the vice-president but we have to prioritise. The building shouldn’t come now when the people are struggling to feed themselves".

Politics / Minimum Wage: It's Far Cheaper To Live In Nigeria Than Ghana, Kenya- Presidency by hisexcellency34: 5:47pm On Jun 05
The presidency on Wednesday said despite Nigeria’s economic challenges, it is far cheaper to live in the country than Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Angola and some other African countries.

Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity disclosed this in a statement he posted on his social media handles.

He also faulted those comparing minimum wage in other oil producing companies with Nigeria, saying statistics and numbers can be misleading.

He wrote “There is this nairametrics table of minimum wage in oil producing countries in Africa compared to that of Nigeria. Seun Okinbaloye showed the same table yesterday on his show and I have seen AriseNews anchors use the same table as a talking point in their Q&A segment”.

“Statistics and numbers can be misleading depending on how they are presented. The table does not give the full picture. It is not enough to present naira equivalent of minimum wage in Angola, Algeria, Tunisia, Kenya, DRC Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Ghana etc. The question to ask is: what is the cost of living in these countries?”

“These are countries where VAT is between 15-21%. Countries where personal income tax rate is higher than that of Nigeria”.

“Even with our current economic challenges, it is still far cheaper to live in Nigeria than any of these countries. In these countries, the cost of house rent, basic food items are higher than what is obtainable in Nigeria. A bottle of coke that sells for N300 in Nigeria sells in these countries for between N800-N2000 equivalent”.

Politics / Minimum Wage: N60,000 Can’t Even Buy A Bag Of Rice – Ozekhome by hisexcellency34: 7:28am On Jun 05
Prof. Mike Ozekhome (SAN), human rights lawyer and activist, has faulted the proposed N60,000 minimum wage by the federal government, saying the amount can’t buy a bag of rice in present-day Nigeria.

In an article titled ‘ The Labour Strike and FG’s Inertia- The Way Forward, Ozekhome says a 50kg bag of rice currently sells between N80,000 to N120,000.

While comparing, minimum wage prices across the world, Ozekhome says Nigeria’s minimum wage is one of the lowest as the FG’S propose N60,000 will amount to $40 per month.

He wrote “By way of comparative analysis with some other countries globally, the monthly minimum wage in the United States is US$1,160 ( N1,705,200); UK £1,376 (N2,528,950); Canada 2,464 CAD (N2,710,400); France £1,539.42 (N2,847,927); Ghana GHC 2,904 (N292,548.96) Rwanda RWF 56,668 (N64,602); South Africa R4,067.2 – R4,412.8 (N322,406.944 – N349,802.656); Botswana P1,168 (N122,056); Germany £1,985.6 (N3,673,360) Australia AUD3531.2 (N 3,490,414.64); Kenya is KES15,201 (N172,683.36). In UAE, there is no general minimum wage as it differs from profession to profession. However, for skilled Labourers AED 5,000 (N2,019,435); people with University degrees AED12,000 (N4,846,644); qualified technicians AED 7,000 (N2,827,209); South Korea is 2,010,580 Won (N2,161,574.558)”.

“China differs from city to city. However, Shanghai is RMB 2,690 per month (N551,181) and Heilongjiang RMB 1,450 (N 297,105).Singapore does not prescribe a general minimum wage for all its workers. However, the minimum Singaporean wage is averaged at 6,792SGD/Month = N7,464,408)”.

“Even though Rwanda and Botswana’s minimum wage per month which is RWF 56,668 (N64,602) and P1,168 (N122,056), respectively, appears meagre, the two countries have since put in place social services that cushion the masses’ suffering and put them on a developmental path”.

“Indeed, they are two of the fastest growing economies not only in Africa, but also in the world. We do not have such in Nigeria. Nigeria is perhaps the only country in the world that brazenly defies Isaac Newton’s Law of Motion to the effect that “what goes up must come down”. In Nigeria, once prices of good go up, they never come down”. Are these countries and us not living on the same Planet earth? We are, of course”.

“With the present spirally inflation, N60,000 cannot even buy one bag of rice which today sells for between N80,000 and N120,000 depending on the grade and quality”.

“What is the way forward from this FG-Labour face-off and stalemate? Part of the solution lies in steering a middle course between labour’s N615,500 per month demand and the FG’s proposal of N60,000 per month. This is more so having regard to the impossibility of the private sector, especially small scale businesses and private professions, having the capacity and economic wherewithal to pay such exorbitant wage”.

“Another solution lies in public office holders making deliberate sacrifices in the midst of public angst and disenchantment by cutting down their ostentatiously vulgar lifestyle of ugly display of opulence and their sheer exhibitionism of wealth in mindless convoys of vehicles in the midst of grinding poverty and wretchedness of the masses”.

“The Nigerian people are not happy at all. Anyone who advises the government to the contrary is nothing but a fawner, bootlicker, ego masseur, toady flatterer and clapper”.

Politics / Ajaero, Labour Leaders Are Targeting 2027, Working For Peter Obi - Reno Omokri by hisexcellency34: 4:14pm On Jun 03
Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide on Monday says the N494,000 Minimum wage being demanded by organised labour is unrealistic.

The labour leaders are currently commencing a nationwide indefinite strike due to the refusal of the Federal Government to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.

In a post on his Facebook page, he also accused the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero of fronting for Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023

He wrote “₦494,000 is more than sixteen times the current minimum wage of ₦30,000. If the Federal Government accepts that as the new minimum wage, and Nigeria’s production capacity does not also increase times sixteen, it will lead to the mother of all inflation that will destroy the Nigerian economy and turn us into Zimbabwe and Venezuela”.

“If producers of goods and services, like Dangote, Indomie, Nestle, Flour Mills of Nigeria, Glo, petrol stations, etc, have to pay their staff a minimum of ₦494,000, what do you think they will charge for their products? You, as a worker, will be jumping from frying pan to fire!”.

“Joel Ajaero and his gang are not economists, and worse still, they are supporters of Peter Obi. They endorsed him during the election. They campaigned for him. They defended him. Please assume I am a liar and fact-check me. They are fighting a proxy war for Peter Obi. Obviously, the 2027 election is affecting their direction. They do not have an economic agenda. They have a political objective”.

“If the Federal Government should give in to their outrageous demands, it is you who will suffer. Ajaeeo is not poor. He has money. He travels abroad in style. He can relocate his family. It is you and your family that will bear the brunt of this politician in labour union clothes.
#TableShaker”

Politics / Too Many Lies In Tinubu’s Government, Nigerians Deserve To Know The Truth-George by hisexcellency34: 8:37pm On May 28
Chief Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged President Bola Tinubu to address Nigerians on the true state of the nation on May 29th, the anniversary of his one year in office.

Speaking in an exclusive chat with TheScrutinyNG, George said said there are too many lies being peddled about in the administration, leaving Nigerians confused as to what to believe.

George also said Nigerians should assume the first year in office is a learning curve for President Tinubu, having not been in the presidency previously.

"He ( Tinubu) himself has appealed to Nigerians to be patient with him. For someone like me who has been in and out of government, the first year is a learning curve. He (Tinubu) was not the Vice-President whom the outgoing president handed over to. He just came into the presidency afresh. Let us assume that with one year in office, he has gone through the learning curve".

"But having said that, I believe Nigerians need to know the truth about the current situation of the country. What did he met on ground and where are we and what are his plans for the future?"

"The lies are just too much. We don't know what to believe again. They said we have eliminated fuel shortages but when Aliko Dangote came out, he said he will be buying crude oil from America to refine in Nigeria. What happened to our crude oil?".

"When Tinubu came in, he said 'fuel subsidy is gone' but many people, including the World Bank said the government is lying and they are still paying fuel subsidy. We really don't know what the truth is".

"Today, they said they are bringing in foreign investors, tomorrow, the investors will say that is news to us and there was nothing like that. Who do we believe?"

George said Tinubu’s broadcast to the nation must be comprehensive and tell Nigerians what he inherited from his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.

"I am asking him (Tinubu) to make a broadcast on May 29th and show us every sector. We need to know where the country is. Look at how much was stolen under Buhari in eight years. If Tinubu has the figures, he should tell Nigerians".

"The fact that the people voted for you, the onus is on you to manage the resources of the land for their benefit. The situation is getting worse by the hour and Nigerians are going through tough times. I bought a little can of Amstel Malta at the airport for N2,000. Just one can! What us really going on?"

Politics / Insecurity: Like Gaza, No Investor Will Be Willing To Come To Nigeria – Agbakoba by hisexcellency34: 5:24pm On May 27
Chief Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has urged the federal government to address the challenges of insecurity and poor electricity supply in order to attract investors to the country.

Speaking in an exclusive chat with TheScrutinyNG, Agbakoba said no foreign investor will be willing to travel to and invest their monies in a country that is insecure and lacks power to run their businesses.

“At a conference I attended recently, I asked the audience a question. I am going to Gaza where there is currently a war, to invest $2m and I need some partners to come with me. I looked at the audience and said, ‘Who wants to come with me?’ Nobody raised their hands, and the reason is obvious. Gaza is in turmoil, and it is an insecure place.”.

“So, if a foreign investor says, ‘I am going to invest serious cash in Nigeria’, people will say ‘Are you sure you want to do that with all the insecurity changes, lack of rule of law, with the situation in Rivers state? Do you really want to do that?”. The government should tackle insecurity so that the farmer can go to his farm without fear of being attacked by bandits.

Citing his personal example, Agbakoba said he alone has 10 generators for personal use owing to the worsening electricity supply in Nigeria.

“The second thing is power. Countries that cannot power up their systems will not be productive. As I speak to you, I personally have 10 generators. If I, as a person, can have 10 generators, you can imagine what companies like Guinness will have and the impact of the cost of diesel on their businesses. When the first, which is insecurity, is gotten right and the power issue, which is the second, is also gotten right, then you will focus on spreading prosperity.”.

“People are hungry. 133 million Nigerians are in abject poverty, and it is the business of the government to cater for these people. However, the government can’t do so if the economy is not functioning and the country is insecure. Those are three triangles that I believe if the government focuses on, nobody will begin to remember that the naira is falling,” he said.

Do you know the money realised from oil in the 70s?
Quintessence44:
YOU CANNOT COMPARE NIGERIA WITH UAE.

The UAE has LARGER oil reserves than Nigeria, and has a population of just 9 million people.

Gowon built infrastructure like the national highway network we have today.

He built universities and teaching hospitals for the teeming population.

He could have easily used the money to build the world’s tallest skyscraper, but that would have been a waste of resources for which he would have been crucified by the public.

The UAE has more oil and gas than Nigeria, and with just 6 million people, can afford to build 1,000 skyscrapers and still have enough for their ‘oil sheiks’ to loot and deposit in Swiss banks, buy mansions in Beverly Hills and Billionaires Row in European cities as the ordinary citizens are given a reasonably comfortable life.

So UAE have nothing to do with Nigeria.

Their circumstances are completely different.

Leave them alone, face your own unique country and situation, and stop feeling inferior to other nations and people.
