Ethiopian national football team has been in camp since mid- September preparing for a clash with Nigeria in their crucial first leg World Cup play-off that will take place at the Addis Ababa stadium on Sunday 13 October. Cafonline.com spoke with the head Coach Sewnet Bishaw ahead of the match. What are your expectations for Sunday's match? Bishaw: We have never reached the World Cup final before but we believe there is time for Ethiopia to get a place in that global football bonanza. This year we have reached this decisive group of ten where we have only two matches to play to make the World Cup finals. It is a do-or-die situation. I personally believe that on Sunday we don't have any other option than to win. The Nigerians are highly favoured to go through but you sound confident of a win over a strong opponent, why is that? I know that Nigeria is one of the football power houses of Africa. They have appeared four times at the World Cup finals in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2010. But one must be aware that it's not always the strong side that wins in the football competition. The results are determined after 90 minutes. We are the outsiders from the start. Nigerians didn't get this big name by one stroke. Our successive wins in the qualifiers have given us belief and we have risen on the FIFA ranking. Within Africa we have already begun to gain reputation. So now we target to win over the strong Nigerian side and aim to take our country to the World Cup finals. The home fans expect your words to be realized. This is a football match. We go to the pitch to win. But this doesn't mean that the team that really wants success the most will win. If there is a set- back, we have to accept it. This is football. We will do everything possible to win but if that is not realized our home fans must prepare themselves to accept the result as it is. Some of the national players had the continental club competition. Due to this they were not together with others. Did this affect you? Well almost all players have been together since mid -September. At first we had two times training in a day but now we do only once a day. Their condition is quite good, the spirit is high and they are highly inspired to make history for their country and themselves. Your side's top striker Getaneh Kebede is injured. Do you think he will be ready for Sunday? Yes, Getaneh had injury problem while playing for his club in South Africa and has been sidelined for some time. After joining the national side this week I didn't get an assurance from the doctors that he will be fit to play the coming Sunday. He is a key player for us but if he is not fit we have others equally competent strikers. The good news is that all other players are in good health. Saladin Seid, Shimeles Bekele and Addis Hintsa who are returned from their clubs are in good form. Well i’m talking of nigeria’s enemy number one- the boko haram leader ibrahim shekau. Not too long ago, security agencies said he may have died as a result of wounds he sustained during a shoot-out with security agents sometime in july. He was almost captured, but his aides managed to evacuate him across the border to cameroun. He was in hospital-this picture yesterday testifies to that, and he actually appeared lifeless here. As the official claims have it, shekau never made it, but since there was no evidence to prove this, perhaps until this picture now, security agents have continued to maintain the cautious approach that the boko haram leader may have died. However, about two weeks ago, a video surfaced, allegedly showing shekau who claimed he was not dead, and as usual promised more attacks while claiming responsibility for all the attacks, mostly on innocent people, including students. But security agencies have now subjected the video to proper scrutiny and the report from the sss yesterday, suggests that the video may just have been mere manipulations. The security statement in abuja says the person who purported to be shekau in the video is a clone. Why or how? Unlike the real shekau who will launch into a long recitation of quranic verses before delivering his message, that was absent here, as this new shekau just launched into a tirade without the usual sequence that shekau was known for. Again, the usual pattern in previous videos was that nobody dared interrupt shekau, but there were interruptions in the latest video, showing that this make belief shekau does not command respect. Again, the lips of the alleged shekau did not synchronise with the words as pronounced in the video. And the last straw, that put paid to the genuiness of the video, this cloned shekau made reference to late margaret thatcher as one of the western leaders who rejoiced at the news of his death-now, we all know that the iron lady died since april this year and therefore could not have rejoiced at the death of shekau in august. The conclusion of the security agencies for now is that-lets wait and see, but the cautious optimism is that this picture you are seeing is that of shekau on his dying bed. No family should EVER have to experience this. The Chinese government is being accused of dragging a pregnant woman out of her bed at 4 a.m. to force her to abort her 6-months pregnancy. According to DailyMail and SkyNews, A Chinese woman has revealed she was dragged from her home in the middle of the night and forced to have an abortion, three months before her child was due to be born. Liu Xinwen, 33, and her husband Zhou Guoqiang were left devastated after the mother-of-one was pulled from her bed and taken to hospital to be injected with an abortion-inducing drug. The forced abortion is due to China’s strict one-baby policy, introduced in 1979 to keep the country’s population under control – the couple already have a son. The couple claim that they were awoken at 4am last week after their door was kicked down and two dozen officials from the Shandong Province Family Planning Commission forced their way into their home. Mr Zhou told Sky News how he was held down on the sofa while his terrified wife was taken away to the hospital. He then spent a desperate five hours trying to find out where Liu Xinwen had been taken as officials refused to tell him. When he eventually found his wife at the People’s Hospital of Fangzi District in Weifang City, he arrived just minutes after the injection had been administered. ‘My wife was lying in bed. I asked her: ‘Have you been injected?’ She said ‘yes’. I asked if the baby was still moving.’ She said ‘not much,’ he told Sky News. ‘After that, I didn’t want my wife to see my crying. I went outside.’ The baby died in her womb and was delivered a day later – a horrific photo shows the fetus in an orange bucket next to Liu Xinwen curled up on the hospital bed. It was then the couple discovered they had been due to have a little boy, a younger brother for their son Zhou Junfeng, 10. Mr Zhou claims his wife was forced to sign papers which said she had agreed to the abortion. He said that when she refused she was told if she did not co-operate her husband would be arrested and she would be left with nothing. She told Sky News that after her son was born she had a contraceptive coil inserted, a procedure proscribed by China. She said it must have failed and she discovered she was expecting a second child when she was four months into the pregnancy. The couple decided against informing the authorities as they feared a forced abortion and instead hoped to pay a fine after the birth – this is sometimes acceptable in parts of China. It is not clear how authorities found out Liu Xinwen was pregnant. The Chinese Embassy in London told Sky News they were looking into the case. Known to many as the one-child policy, China’s actual rules are more complicated. The government limits most urban couples to one child, and allows two children for rural families if their firstborn is a girl. Though the government credits the policy with preventing hundreds of millions of births and helping lift countless families out of poverty, it is reviled by many ordinary people. The strict limits have led to forced abortions and sterilizations, even though such measures are illegal. A Kenyan military spokesman today confirmed the names of the four fighters implicated in the attack on the upscale Westgate Mall in Kenya’s capital last month, an assault that turned into a four-day-long siege, killing at least 67 people. Major Emmanuel Chirchir said the attackers were *. Abu Baara al-Sudani, *. Omar Nabhan, *. Khattab al-Kene *. and Umayr, . The identities of the men come as a private television station in Nairobi obtained and broadcast theCCTV footage from the Nairobi mall. The footage shows no more than four attackers. In the video, they are seen calmly walking through a storeroom inside the complex, holding machine guns. One of the men’s pant legs appears to be stained with blood, though he is not limping, and it is unclear if the blood is his, or that of his victims’. The footage contradicts earlier government statements which indicated that between 10 to 15 attackers were involved in the 21 September attack. Little is known about the identities of the attackers, beyond their names, except that al-Kene and Umayr are known members of al-Hijra, the Kenyan arm of al-Shabab. Al-Shabab, al-Qaeda’s affiliate in neighbouring Somalia, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was revenge for Kenya’s military intervention in Somalia in 2011 that was aimed at flushing out the extremists. |
