Euthanasia, is simply the quiet, painless and intentional putting to death of another by artificial means upon persons with incurable and extremely painful diseases or illnesses, it is classified into active, passive, voluntary and involutary euthanasia. This act, is illegallised in Nigerian legal system, under Section 306, 308 and 209 of the criminal code respectively. However the posture of our legal system and our laws in rendering this act illegal is consequent upon the fact that this act is a complete breach of any such persons Fundamental right to life, as entrenched under Section 33 of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.
Although, there are various arguements in favour of its legalisation in our legal system, it is the liberalists views that offenders who commits this acts, do it out of love and compassion for the individuals who are suffering under such extreme pains and incurable disease. Just as King saul in the bible sought after an amalekite to help in ending his life in 2 Samuel 1:6-10.
It is however my humble opinion that the posture of the law remains quite adequate for the nigerian society, and that the sanctity of human life must be proctected at all cost, regardless of what other legal systems like canadaa and the rest may decide to follow.
