@IbeOkehie you stylishly dodged @Biglyanga response regarding Nigeria's infrastructural deficit on electricity generation and good roads which are key.... Floating the naira remains a bad policy which will only ruin Nigeria's economy because the root problem which is corruption and looting of public funds within the government has not been addressed. No genuine progress can be made when corrupt, selfish, greedy and incompetent people are occupying sensitive public offices....

No dodge.

1) Mains electricity supply is low and unstable because the entire sector is controlled, dominated and majorly owned by government. The Germans have been trying to help since around 2016, to no avail. Because the government doesn't want a free market system.

2) Roads - do you know its ILLEGAL to export granite from Nigeria since the 1970's? The reason given when the law was made is that Nigeria needs all its granite to build roads, which are badly needed for development. Roads are owned by government.

3) Railways - Where is Oga Gerrard? The Chinese have helped Nigeria to build a new rail network. ALL railways in Nigeria are owned by government and here's what's happening with it -

https://nairametrics.com/2024/09/29/fg-orders-probe-into-ticket-racketeering-allegations-on-abuja-kaduna-rail-route/
https://hallmarknews.com/massive-corruption-rocks-railways-ticketing-system/
https://businessday.ng/transport/article/nigeria-rail-stutters-on-passenger-decline-rising-dollar-debt/

Basically, the ONLY WAY to make Nigeria productive and developed is to adopt a classical neo-liberal, free market and capitalist political-economy. Note the POLITICAL. Because the ingredients of a highly developed nation are KNOWN, it's no longer a secret. They are ECONOMIC-POLITICAL factors as follows -

*demographic homogeneity,
*democracy,
*free markets and
*property rights.

The more of these FOUR factors are present in a country, the more LIKELY it is to be highly developed and prosperous.

For example, Nigeria could CREATE more homogeneity by creating TRIBAL BASED states and giving each a HIGH DEGREE OF AUTONOMY.

Nigeria could bestow PROPERTY RIGHTS by repealing the Land Use Act and give lands back to the people.

Nigeria could ABOLISH the Central Bank and adopt bitcoin as official currency, thus eliminating INFLATION.

Here's a convo between Oga Gerrard and myself that summarizes what I've outlined above.

https://www.nairaland.com/8182619/cant-believe-got-whole-324k/4#131474779

That's it. The problem of Nigeria is NOT corruption, poor infrastructure, low IQ, Western or White Imperialism or anything. People say Western Sanctions have hurt the Zimbabwean economy, true but...Nigeria is NOT under ANY sanctions and yet it's the Poverty Capital of the World.

Nor will Germany, China, Aliens from Pluto or Eskimoes or Singapore ever help Nigeria develop. The ONLY way for Nigeria to develop is to give its people FREEDOM, political & economic freedom. That's all. But we know Black Africans will NEVER allow their own people to be free. I mean these are the tribes that sold their own brethren into slavery. That about says it all.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Nope, it will not. China doesnt float its currency.
Naija is lacking infrastructure.. like Electricity and roads. Manufacturers arent charities. We dont have much comparative advantage in manufacturing.

Yes China has some controls on it's currency. China does the opposite of what Nigeria has been doing. Early in its quest for development, China SUPPRESSED the value of it's currency to promote productivity and make its exports competitive, right up to the 2010's. Then it switched to BOOSTING its currency value to promote consumption and compete with the dollar. China wasn't created as an industrial powerhouse, in the 1950's it was poor and suffered massive famines. China BECAME an industrial power by enacting some free market reforms in 1978.

I challenge anyone to simply Google with relevant queries and find the USA, Europe, Japan and many other countries complaining BITTERLY about unfair export policy anchored by Chinese suppression of the Yuan.

When it comes to currency, the best practice is free float, let a currency find an optimal value. In general, SUPPRESSING a currency value promotes productivity & exports, while BOOSTING a currency promotes consumption.

Nigeria has ALWAYS promoted and boosted the naira ABOVE its fundamental value. That is why Nigerian productivity is low and manufactured exports are low. In fact the rigged value of naira is the MAIN factor keeping Nigeria down in poverty.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

I stated that the current system of a MANAGED FLOAT has been in place for a loooong time. It was introduced as part of the SAP programs by President Ibrahim Babangida and his Finance Minister Olu Falae. It was THE FIRST TIME that Nigeria ever had any kind of market reflective rate for forex. Prior to that, the FIXED RATE was determined by administrative order. Not even the CBN, but the Ministry of Finance!!!!

It caused all kinds of corruption. The rate was so out of touch with the market that it was profitable to import SAND into Nigeria; that's the same reason it's profitable to import USED CARS and 2nd hand clothing today. Let that sink it...the overvalued naira makes it possible for USED, 2nd hand items to compete and win against NEW domestically made stuff. That's why Nigeria is NOT productive, that's why Nigeria is NOT a good place to do manufacturing, including REFINING PETROL. We shall see if the recent adjustments make a difference...we know they've already caused a substantial rise in exports.

For more reading, peruse this important interview given by Olu Falae himself.

https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/358394-interview-why-sap-was-essential-for-nigerias-economy-olu-falae.html?tztc=1

Without IBB and SAP Nigeria would be an economic dead zone. ALL productive and anyway competitive parts of the economy are those subjected to SAP, anyone can check it.

BigIyanga:
?
What is your shooopid point again? Is Naija Indonesia? Is Naija a manufacturing hub like Indonesia?

His point is cogent and sound.

A free floating currency will MAKE Nigeria a manufacturing and farming hub and generally a productive nation. A market determined currency value PROMOTES productivity. Indonesia wasn't created by God as a manufacturing hub. Thanks.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Are you inferring that there is still some subsidy, as such?

I'm not inferring anything.

I've outlined FACTS, one of which is that the CBN maintains a rigged official rate for forex which is different from the free market rate used in the black or parallel market. The price difference is the subsidy. It's all public info.

Very easy to understand or maybe not.

Another matter, if NNPC is getting forex at the CBN rate to pay Dangote for fuel AND the other fuel marketers can't get that rate, the then fuel market is a monopoly.

If NNPC is paying Dangote in naira using fresh printed currency from CBN, then NNPC is a monopoly.

Private fuel marketers can't compete against NNPC that has the advantage of such official subsidies.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

In a free float, will subsidy be removed?

Yes. Subsidy is needed WHEN government sets a fixed price.

Or put it this way...subsidies are a predictable consequence of fixed prices.

So the EXISTENCE of a CBN rate means the government is paying a forex subsidy. The amount of subsidy is equal to the difference between the black market and official CBN rate

So the naira was actually floated.

I thought Tinubu paid agents, BATerians said that the naira wasn't floated but rather that the naira was allowed to find its true value.

I have asked them severally here, have the naira finally found its true value, but they keep changing the goal post and speaking from two sides of their mouth.

It's the same It's always been...a managed float. That's why there's a CBN rate. That's why there's a Black Market for dollars and other forex in Nigeria. Go on the CBN website and you will see their official or NAFEM or whatever rate.

A free float is the real thing. That's what Switzerland and Mexico and other productive countries operate. There's no Black Market for the South Africa Rand or the Japanese Yen. Their Central Banks have no official rate.

I had to quote all for posterity purposes. Thanks for your invaluable elucidation. I agree with some of the points, especially in overturning the capitalist system for socialism, black Africa needs property rights and free markets. However, I don't fully agree with the motives of the Chinese - they are just for trading and sharing technical know-how. It is left for Africans to utilise the opportunity. Southeast Asians are doing the same. Africa should be no different. China is a huge market to tap into.

Yeah, Zimbabwe is under sanctions. Nigeria is NOT under sanctions. Both nations are growing their trade with China, so both should have booming economies by now. grin

So the point must be reemphasized. I told you in another discussion about forex that the issue is NOT the value of naira, it was that the political-economy of Nigeria doesn't give the PEOPLE the FREEDOMS needed to take advantage of it. Note the POLITICAL. The Igbo know this same as the Uighurs know it in China. Unfortunately, our people don't like THE TRUTH, they would rather accept LIES and feel goooood. Remember there's nothing like fuel subsidy, fuel subsidy doesn't exist grin

The China song has been sung all over the Continent. Is Zambia better of? Ethiopia has been engaged with them for decades. How far? For THE PEOPLE, ordinary citizens, it will be no better outcomes than engagement with the West. Ask yourself, are THE PEOPLE of China free? So why do you trust their COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT to make African lives better? How come they've been seizing African assets in loan defaults? 🤔

* THIS IS THE KEY TAKE AWAY as Raji Fashola would put it....

The many Black African thinkers waxing poetic about China are falling for the liberation mantra. I know I've told you this before - Africa doesn't need China or the West or Eskimos or Russians or Malaysians. Black Africa needs CAPITALISM, FREE MARKETS and PROPERTY RIGHTS. A political economy based on classical neo-liberal values. Unfortunately, the PEOPLE of Africa would rather fight to be in government so they can get money without working, than allow OTHER Africans to be free.

All the other stuff is context. I was waiting to read that Chinese people are angels. Like, a Black African scion of a slave selling tribe should be the last to lecture Oyibo on their racist HISTORY grin shocked grin Come on man!!! Developed and productive people are good people. End.

you're right am on a isa cr1/fiance visa Facebook group and a lot of women complain a lot about how their Nigerian spouses leave them after entering the USA.
A recent one is a 63 year old African American woman who filed a k1visa for a 53year old Nigerian man and the left her after getting married and spending just 4months with her, she claimed he went behind her back after her brain tumor surgery to claim vawa with a lawyer.

It's not just women who are victimized. It's both genders. It's also Nigerians victimizing fellow Nigerians and that's the worst of it all. I've written about this thing on Nairaland, most Nigerian marriages I've observed in my over 30 years despite the ups and downs do work out well. However that has gradually changed in the case of spouses brought in from Nigeria.

Many Nigerian residents are so desperate to get out of the Zoo that marriage-for-deception has become far too common nowadays. It's basically a romance scam and the cold eyed ruthlessness is bone chilling. Everyone needs to be aware and defend themselves. I've said my bit. Those that have ears had better listen.

If you are a black African man and you are getting overwhelmed and emotional over Arabs and Jews fight, just know you are a complete born fool who doesn’t deserve a human brain.

These guys called Arabs and Jews hate you blacks, the earlier you know it the better.

So why cry over people who obviously see you less than animals?
Because of religion ba?? It shows you are a conquered miserable slave with no brain…

Even here in Africa, if they see you as a black man in Libya, they will capture you and sell you as a slave and treat you worse than pigs…

See this one for example, a 21st century man still believing some Jewish myths that they are god chosen people. Who told you that we aren’t God chosen in Nigeria. I am a proud Yoruba boy and my tribe is God chosen tribe! We can sit down too and write our own story into book and tell of how God has been on our side and has chosen us as his people . But mumu black man will sit in Africa saying Israelites are God chosen, who do you this kind thing??

So when is the Book going to be written?

1) Mugabe and Zimbabwe in general got sanctioned. And we know why. It is not a complete 100% fault.

2) Thankfully, Zimbabwe has attracted real sector investments from the Chinese these days.

3) What about the destruction of the Black Wall Street in the US?

OK, work is over, I have some time. Much as I hate the topic, this is Oga Gerrard so I must engage.

1) Said this many times before. I used to be a Black Africanist firebrand. Then I grew up. Got older. Had more experience and insight into human nature and unlike most people, I've been willing to grapple with the REALITIES of that nature and changed my views accordingly.

Zimbabwe.

Let me tell you what is wrong with MOST or in fact ALL liberation movements in all the colonial countries. Because they mostly were colonized by countries with CAPITALIST sytems, those liberation movements somehow associated that economic ideology with the evils of colonialism, racism, imperialism and so on. They therefore spurned everything that had to do with capitalism and adopted the OPPOSITE, which is socialism and communism. I have a good friend from Vietnam, I'm supposed to see him in the next month or so. He's the one that made me understand how this lays bare one inescapable fact that permeates those movements, to wit - the leaderships of those movements were fighting to replace the White European ruling class so that they, the new indigenous saviors, could now do exactly what the colonialists were doing - and what they did is worse BECAUSE they used socialist themed systems. So the people ended up oppressed and POORER than they were before.

One hopes that your citation of Zimbabwe means you followed the land reforms like I did. Yes, the Whites oppressed, robbed and violated the Native Black Africans. However, when Mugabe took their lands, he DID NOT institute PROPERTY RIGHTS, the lands of Zimbabwe are now in the same sort of legal status as in other Black African nations...government owns everything even AFTER the colonized tribes were supposedly liberated by their fellow Black Africans!!! grin

I stopped following the entire process when I realized that was the outcome. I'll just leave it there.

2) You and the Chinese. First, I hope you can answer - are the Chinese BETTER people than the White Europeans? Anyone after having thought long and hard about humans, can acknowledge that ALL humans are good & bad. The ONLY real differentiator that I have found in my own thinking is PRODUCTIVITY and DEVELOPMENT. Solving problems, making life more comfortable so humans can thrive. That is all.

Now the beauty of CAPITALISM and FREE MARKETS is that even the oppressor can't stop the rising tide from lifting ALL boats. You know Yvonne Chaka Chaka? Someone told me years ago that when she first visited Nigeria, it was during the early 1980's fervent campaigns against Apartheid. Apparently during an interview during that visit, she was asked to comment on how much Black Africans were suffering in South Africa. To everyones surprise, she said that Blacks South Africans are living better than what she has seen in Nigeria. I've been looking for the video or interview for years, no luck yet. .

Don't believe that? I've posted a few videos from Thomas Sowell, a Black American philosopher. He's done all kinds of travelling and writing and researched the places he went to. In one video, he explained how Black South Africans were actually living quite well. One intriguing example was how employers SECRETLY hired Blacks in jobs prohibited by Apartheid Laws. Why? It was cheaper than hiring White workers! There was a whole black market based on this labor operating in plain sight! Just sit and think about it for a bit. This is the beauty of capitalism or maybe economics and markets.

All to say, the Chinese are just angling to do what the West has been doing and they will do much worse. The EVIDENCE is that they're no better. Unfortunately, the PEOPLE of Africa would rather fight to be in government so they can get money without working, than to allow OTHER Africans to be free.

3) Black Wall Street in the Tusla Race Riots. A terrible example of murderous, racist wickedness and jealousy perpetrated by White Americans in the USA....in 1921, as in over a CENTURY ago. Here's my challenge to YOU in the present century. The USA Federal Bureau of Investigations keeps track of the race of murderers and their victims. Go and take a look and tell us which race is killing more of the other race TODAY in the USA. Murder is murder, there's little possibility of fudging the stats.

I only found recently that another crime that's hard to juke to stats is CAR THEFT. Why? Because all cars are insured and where money is involved, the insurance companies follow the records. Wanna guess which race is responsible for most car thefts and hijackings in the USA, circa 2024?

As a purely biological matter trans-racial killings can be justified. It's a world of competition, the human is an animal after all. So if there's a particular race group disproportionally killing others, we can say, hey it's biology. You went back to history. Would you mind if I took an excursion into Black African INTRA-RACE oppression, dispossesion, socio-political marginalization and violence TODAY in say, Nigeria? I mean history is history so I won't even bring up how Black Africans sold THEIR BRETHREN to strange alien races. It's heart warming to see an African taking up their cause 400 years later! I could wade into things taking place TODAY, not in 1921.

Zimbabwe again. The two main tribes are the Shona and Ndebele. Do you know their HISTORY and how it contributed to everything happening in Zimbabwe? Basically, before the White Man there was the Zulu. The Crushing. Fascinating stuff, but it's history and the people of Zimbabwe have no reason to be poor in 2024.

History happened. America and Europe have a racist past...so does EVERY other country have a racist, tribalist, religiously oppressive past and even present. The Chinese are doing much worse to the Uighurs TODAY, like what the Arabs did to their Black African slaves, but somehow that doesn't matter. It's funny every time people want to paint the USA as racist, they go to....THE PAST, as if the country hasn't IMPROVED on that matter. Over 400 years of progress and it's still a touchstone for those who are simply JEALOUS of the Anglo-Saxons and their proven ability at development.

Nna, this whole thing just makes me laugh. Chinese saviors. grin grin grin No problem, we shall see.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Gerrard59:

Interesting tale from your uncle. I find the bold surprising. But then, what do I know?

His uncle likely MARRIED the USA citizen BEFORE coming to the USA. So he could even get his Green Card within weeks of entry. I only used the word likely because one can't know everything, but that has to be the case.

Fiancee visa is also fast, where the non-USA spouse stays in Nigeria and comes over and GETS MARRIED within 90 days of entry.

The foreign person can also enter the USA on any other kind of non-immigrant visa, meet a USA citizen and get married and do ADJUSTMENT OF STATUS and get their Green Card within weeks and then citizenship in 3 years.

My advise to Nigerian-American USA citizens or any USA citizen is to STOP marrying spouses from Nigeria or the 3rd World, good thing is that the practice is on the decline. If you MUST do it, keep the person in Nigeria. Most people in Nigeria have no good intentions for their USA spouse, they only want to get Green Card. It's just not safe anymore. I have MANY friends or acquaintances who did both and even me myself used one of those pathways. It's been a long time since I had to deal with immigration so I'm not as familiar with the system, but I believe my comments are accurate. USA immigration is too easy, too risky and detrimental to the society.

What the heck, anyone can simply stroll across the border and claim asylum and get thousands of dollars in welfare benefits...that is LITERALLY happening and has been happening for YEARS. Any children born on US soil by that illegal migrant is automatically a USA citizen. The whole thing is either suicidal or some people have a long term plan to destroy this country.

Commodities 2024: Namibia's nascent oil sector prepares for lift-off in 2024

Author Charlie Mitchell

After a series of unsuccessful spuds in the 1970s and 1980s, the Southwest African Coastal Basin spanning Namibia and South Africa was derided a "graveyard" for oil exploration. In the 48 years following Chevron's Kudu gas discovery in 1974, the Namibian section was only tested twice. Then, last year, everything changed.

"With the discoveries of 2022, the Orange sub-basin went from a Zombie basin to the most exciting exploration destination in the world," said Justin Cochrane, African upstream regional research director at S&P Global Commodity Insights.

With billions of barrels of oil, the Orange Basin could be Africa's largest ever discovery, capable of transforming Namibia from one of the world's poorest countries to a major producer by the 2030s.

First, though, an entire industry must be created from scratch, with oil majors, juniors and tiny buccaneering explorers all competing for a slice of the pie. While a host of new wells are due to be drilled next year, 2024 will be characterized by the transition from exploration to development, market participants and analysts told S&P Global Commodity Insights.

"Exploration is one thing -- neither easy, nor certain and requiring a massive capital outlay. However contemplating a development, that is a different litany of equally complex, interrelated considerations that are in some senses more challenging -- indicating a potential commitment to develop, as Shell and Total each have, speaks to the potential of the Organ Basin opportunity in Namibia." said Robert Bose, president of Sintana Energy, which has indirect stakes in four offshore blocks.

A New Guyana
Shell's Graff discovery and TotalEnergies' Venus find, in blocks 2913A and 2913B respectively, unlocked billions of barrels of oil, "reshaped the exploration landscape, and ultimately resulted in Namibia being compared to Guyana," said Cochrane.

In total, Shell has drilled seven exploration and appraisal wells, including Graff, Jonker, La Rona, Lesedi and Cullinan, while TotalEnergies has drilled three -- Venus, Venus 1-X and Nara -- and is currently sinking Mangetti-1.

Cochrane said the "the complex could hold an in-place resource of around 10 billion boe," and conceivably as much as 3 billion recoverable. "The level of Orange Basin activity is increasing and interest is through the roof," said Bose.

While the majors said Cullinan and Nara were dry, the latter did in fact hit hydrocarbons, just not in commercial quantities, according to reports. TotalEnergies declined to comment.

Majors have been so tight lipped about their Namibia prospects that investors and analysts are relying on clues. Shell, for instance, drilled its second Jonker appraisal well 23 km away from its first exploration well, according to Upstream, suggesting the resource is larger than many believed.

Why can’t these people come and do the same care job when £1 was 200 naira

I have 2 school businesses in Nigeria, I don’t even pray for the schools again, it’s the Nigeria economy I pray for like it needs to rebound and grow so a middle class can grow again.

It will take some years cos the damage in the last few years took some years too.

But the idea is if the currency stabilises, the economy grows . Again a rich middle class can grow again

Just like when the first damage was done in 1983, after some years notable 1990-2003 even up till 2011. A rich middle class grew

That is why the USA should be careful about the KINDS of people they allow into our country. It's not about race, it's culture. Large numbers of people with poor culture is detrimental.

When you tell Tinubu supporters that Tinubu is a complete fraud they start throwing insults...

All the signs were there for them to see but tribalism and religious bias was more important to them

Most people in every country in the world tend to have religious, tribal or racial bias.

Nigerians have more pronounced parochial tendencies because they live under a socialist system. So patronage of government is essential to prosper.

Lolz my dad return to 9ja after schooling in the UK in the 60s. Before he passed on he told me he regret coming back because things became tough for him. This was before Buhari oo grin

He got a little relief because he was able to get pension for the little time he worked while in the UK. They still had his records and paid him his dues several decades later

There needs to be a revolution before Nigeria can work the way we want it to work.

I ask about this all the time. So many diasporans in the 1970's returned from abroad to live permanently in Nigeria...without Green Cards or foreign passports. There's soooo many of these people yet there's rarely any commentary on what happened to them in Nigeria.

Thanks for this little bit.

You are just lying. If you acquire your property in the right way with your lawyer by your side, nobody's dragging it with you.... Stop feeding yourself with lies.....

And unless your plan is to live in that country you are saving in its currency, you have no business saving in that currency... buying land in a developed area should be your best bet....

if you make a move to buy dollar at 870 it is now, This goverment can just bring a policy to drag the rate down to 600+, Exchange rate is not immune to coming down...

Think of how much people that bought dollar at 860 last year October lost when the rate went down to 730...
.

grin shocked grin

What a difference a year can make. Nobody ever lost money betting against Nigeria, no one EVER!!!

The USA's success as a land of opportunity is rooted in several key factors that have shaped its development over the past 250 years. Here are some of the major reasons why it has been able to offer opportunities to so many:

1. **Democratic Foundations and Rule of Law**: The U.S. has built its success on strong democratic institutions and the rule of law. The Constitution established a system of checks and balances that has largely prevented any one person or group from gaining too much power. This fosters political stability and ensures that individual rights are protected. In such an environment, people are more likely to take risks and innovate because they know the system will protect their investments and property.

2. **Immigration and Diversity**: The U.S. has a long history of welcoming immigrants, many of whom brought new ideas, skills, and ambition to the country. This constant influx of diverse talent and perspectives has contributed to the country's innovation and adaptability. Immigrants have been a driving force in many industries, from technology to medicine.

3. **Capitalism and a Market Economy**: The U.S. operates under a capitalist system where market forces generally dictate business operations. This encourages competition, which in turn drives innovation and efficiency. The relatively limited government intervention in private enterprise, alongside a strong legal framework for businesses, has allowed industries to thrive.

4. **Education and Innovation**: Over time, the U.S. has invested heavily in education and research. Its universities and research institutions are among the best in the world. The government and private sector have also fostered a culture of innovation, particularly in science and technology, which has led to breakthroughs that have benefited the entire world.

5. **Infrastructure and Geography**: The U.S. has had the advantage of vast natural resources and an extensive, well-developed infrastructure that has enabled large-scale industrial growth and global trade. Its location, with access to two oceans, also positioned it as a global trading hub.

6. **Meritocracy Over Nepotism**: While nepotism exists everywhere to some degree, the U.S. has developed strong cultural and institutional norms that reward merit and talent. Key institutions, from businesses to universities, emphasize qualifications, skills, and performance. Of course, "who you know" can still be important, but merit-based systems in industries like tech, medicine, and finance allow individuals to rise based on their abilities rather than connections. This contrasts with countries like Nigeria, where nepotism and corruption can sometimes stifle progress by favoring personal connections over competence.

7. **Legal and Financial Institutions**: The U.S. has established robust legal and financial systems that have helped promote entrepreneurship and innovation. With accessible capital markets, venture capital, and a well-regulated banking system, individuals and companies have been able to secure the funding needed to grow businesses and create jobs.

8. **Checks on Power and Regular Renewal**: The U.S. political system requires regular renewal of leadership through elections. This constant accountability ensures that leaders can be replaced if they don't meet the people's needs, which encourages continuous improvement. Unlike many countries where leaders stay in power for extended periods, the U.S. rotates power through elections, bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to the table.

9. **Cultural Emphasis on Individualism and Innovation**: The U.S. places a high value on individualism and entrepreneurship. There's a cultural belief that anyone can succeed if they work hard and innovate, often referred to as the "American Dream." This drives people to take risks and pursue opportunities that might not be available in more collectivist societies.

As for what has *kept* the U.S. improving over the last 250 years, a key factor is its adaptability. The country has shown a remarkable ability to adjust to new challenges and opportunities, whether through technological advances, social movements, or shifts in global politics. Constant reinvention, along with a system that allows for debate and reform, has enabled the U.S. to overcome many of its problems while continuing to progress.

Nigeria, and other nations striving for similar success, can certainly achieve these results by focusing on building strong institutions, reducing corruption, and fostering a culture that rewards merit and innovation.

BONUS: do you know the US is an import dependent country ?

Google search
Major port in the country are currently on strike and the economy is slowing cause of this

Thanks for the answer. I know it takes time so I appreciate it.

Last first. Your bonus point is very important- in many comments on Nairaland I insist that Nigeria must stop all barriers to imports. Most people don't understand that importation is a CONTRIBUTOR to economic growth. So yes I get it and hope the port workers strike won't last long. One of my friends told me he's buying extra household items just in case grin

All the factors you wrote above result from Anglo-Saxon culture, dominated by the Anglo tribe. While they conquered and settled the USA, the Spanish and Portuguese took over Mexico, Brazil and many other countries in Latin America. The factors you enumerated are more part of the culture in the USA than in Mexico, Cuba and many other places. In fact Argentina used to be the richest country in the world but now has one of the worst economies.

All those things like rule of law, less corruption, democracy, free markets, adaptability, hard work and such are CULTURAL, they're byproducts of the habits of a certain kind of people. There's an interview I posted on Nairaland, a discussion between Vivek Ramanswany and Anne Coulter. The lady is Anglo-Saxon and she made an astounding claim - that the Anglos are the most honest and fair people in the world. It's kinda hard to agree with that seemingly arrogant posture, but she has a point. The USA fought a civil war to free its own slaves. I don't think there's any other people that have done anything similar.

Anyway, my point is about immigration. Yes, immigration is good. But too much of anything is bad. I think the balance has been tipped to bad in the USA. For the USA to continue making progress, we need the right kind of immigrants.

At least half of all immigrants to the USA today are on public cash payments, as in welfare. I know SEVERAL Nigerian immigrants who came to the country in the last 5 to 10 years and went straight on to welfare. It didn't use to be that way 100 years ago.

Add to that, my read is that a huge majority of immigrants to the USA now HATE this country. I don't know if you follow politics, but compare someone like Ilhan Omar to Vivek Ramaswamy. It's just crazy. There's a lot more I could say, but this is not the place.

Anyway, thanks for the reply. I'm very afraid for our country. A nation like this didn't happen by accident. The people who organized and built and made this country possible have become victims of their own kindness and generosity. They've been very, very careless. They've had it too good for a long time and I pray the lessons they have to learn aren't too painful.

Good Luck to USA.

You think Anglo-Saxons created the US because that's what they've told you. The United States was a collaborative creation and development made by people from several cultures, since beginning and to date.

Nigerian Americans also contribute disproportionately to creating tools, products and processes, as do Indian Americans (to a greater extent than Nigerian Americans)

The topic wasn't countries, it was populations in the US.

Anglos created the USA. Their culture underlies the organization of the USA.

Yes, it's about populations in the USA.
If the population of the USA is replaced with Nigerians or Asians Indians the USA will become a shithole within two generations.

There's a reason that South Africa is the richest country in Africa. We know what culture made it so.

Yankee na land of milk and honey
No matter who you’re
The grand free for you to grow to any length you want in life

Theirs is nothing like bring who you know or who know you except racism here and there and the gun violence and the weather conditions which is sometimes very bad
But In america is a great country to thrive
Pay your tax
Obey their laws and you’re good to go

I admire the USA with as much fervor as you do. Just wondering if you've ever questioned what exactly underlies the national success.

Why do you think the USA is such a great country of opportunity? As in, what things have made it that way?

You wrote - Theirs is nothing like bring who you know or who know you. Why do you think there's less of such nepotism in the USA than in Nigeria and many other countries?

What do you think has KEPT the USA improving over 250 years? Again, just curious....if you have the time to answer I'd be much obliged.

Thanks.

1) Nigerians also earn more than white americans and

2) are significantly more educated that white and Indians

1) I've not come across that data. It might be true.

2) Education is not necessarily success. Success means creating tools, products and processes that solve problems and enrich society, which leads to DEVELOPMENT. Anyone who doesn't know is advised to look up the ECONOMIC meaning of development. Nigerians are an undeveloped people.

The Anglo-Saxons created the USA, a system that enables Nigerians and Indian immigrants to thrive. There's a reason India was the Poverty Capital of the World until Nigeria took the title in 2018. Replace the entire population of the USA with Nigerians and the results after two generations will not surprise anyone.

It's very logical considering Nigeria is Africa's most populous country. The growth of immigrants from developing countries will scare whites especially as their birth rates have plummeted and they are growing older.

You entered as a married person and got a lucky with processing. Other non-immigrant routes have much longer queues. But yes, I agree. The US is the best place to thrive as a black professional. The money is as if it's minted shocked

Most educated, not most successful unless you define what it means to be successful.

This is why I find your comments worth reading even if we don't 100% agree. You're well informed. You gather info AND think about what you find out, hence plausible opinions. Must be something in that local Japanese rice.

Exactly, this is NOT news. Maybe worth a mention sha, but shouldn't surprise anyone.

Thanks.

Alphiegabe:

Nigerians are more successful than the indians and Chinese, don't be delusional.

Absolutely NOT true, not by a long shot. On a per average household basis, Indian Asians earn more INCOME than White Americans. White Americans hold more accumulated WEALTH. Nigerians are likely the most EDUCATED, but that doesn't equate to high income or wealth.

It's like the breathless data about women overtaking men in education, especially Black Women dusting Black Men in degree acquisition. The data shows that Black Men still earn more than Black Women. Because Black women tend to get degrees that don't pay well, while Black Men doing even menial, skilled or semi-skilled labor earn more.

The funny and annoying aspect is that the so-called intellectwats and bourgeois class disagree that Nigerians are crude and vicious tribalists. You see them on Twitter and Reddit chanting mumbo-jumbo about how Nigerians are intelligent and can build nations (very laughable). As for Peter Obi and every other Igbo man, Igbos cannot become the president of Nigeria. I predicted the same, but was lampooned: https://www.nairaland.com/7225545/why-peter-obi-step-down

I had a lively discussion today with a couple of Igbo. At the end of it the general but admittedly tentative consensus was that a lot of Igbo voted for Buhari in 2015, especially the middle class and university grads. It was tentative because many simply couldn't bear to admit it. After a long silence, one of them said "well, yeah you're right, that your Federal Govt College classmate named X even had a Buhari banner on his Facebook page at the time and long afterwards".

Nigerians are a special people. For real.
