adanny01:

On whether its safe, the only thing that makes it safe is the design. You are safe to use steel even for far more than the 3 stories you are planning, it is the design that makes it safe or not.

There are quacks, draftsmen and even some uneducated fellows that would do RCD designs for you, but SSD is another game a quack would decline. So you will pay for the real deal.

To pass building planning and permits means vetting officers who are used to RCDs would cast an eagle eye on your project. Meaning you get delays and spend money at every corner and every boss is aware and monitors your project.

It is easy to determine quality of concrete but not for structural steel. The development control would want to see results. Building with RC is not just convenient, it doesn't require maintenance after construction. Very limited things affect concrete during its life span, such as sea water, fire etc. With steal, rust is a major issue so even without sea water. This means that steal would only be handled by professionals. You dont get to use 4k per day masons, you must use highly skilled labour.

You are also limited in building services that are cheap and easy to install. With a steel building, a small thing as an electrical socket needs expert handling to place. You don't get to weld structural members at will. You get to hire a crane for the duration of your build, that cant be cheap. You meet few experienced artisans which will not come cheap. You will pay huge electricity bills cos your project requires welding 24/7. I can go on and on and on. The cost in my projection can easily be more that twice what you would spend on RC.

Let me reiterate, it is doable, it is safe but can never be cheaper.

adanny01,

Many thanks for your insight. Your knowledge in civil/structural engineering is valuable.
Why am considering this option is because, where I leave (outside Nigeria), the people use SSD for their construction and it seems to be cheap.

Anyway, I will do more research on this matter.

He/She has no idea thats why the idea is being played with.

Thanks adanny01,
I need to know if it is SAFE. Cost to me is not really a factor.
I know in other climes, it is used to build multi-story buildings, but in Nigeria the reserve is the case. I need to know technically if it is permissible to do so, cost aside.

On a side note, it could be cheaper, you never know!

raymondFirstborn:

the cost would depend on the design, is the building for commercial or residential use?
Steel structures are stronger but not cheap.
Reason is labour for structural steel works ain't cheap same with material.Transporting stanchions & other structural materials from point of purchase is would cost more.

Note: With structural steel construction is faster , but would require the use of plants for hoisting, cutting, transportating and power.

if you have an existing design, you can forward to me if you need a breakdown.

My brothers, many thanks for the reply. The building will be for residential use, and i do not have any plan yet. Am still looking at the cost implication. The plan i will choose will depend on the design (concrete vs H-Beam) consideration.

Hi Guys,

I need advice from those who are well versed in building.
I want to construct a three(3) storey build with H or I-Beam with concrete for the pillars and small I-Beam for the floors instead of the usual concrete and rod. I know H/I-Beam is stronger than concrete with rod but i need validation. Has someone done similar job before? What is the cost like?

Thanks in anticipation.
Politics / Re: Anti-Igbo Song: Nnamdi Kanu Tells Igbos To Leave The North by iknowwhoiam: 9:50am On Aug 09, 2017
awesomely:

You always quote retaliatory attacks on Igbo. But you always forget Newton's third law of motion, which says "action and reaction are always equal and opposite."

Nobody is against your agitation for Biafra. But the way you go about it also, put other peaceful southern tribes living in the north at risk. Of all the attacks against your kinsmen you have listed, was it only your tribe that was attacked?

You provoke northerners to violence through hate speeches, when they retaliate, every southern tribe gets a share of the fracas, including innocent tribe like mine. But you always claim victim of the whole thing.

To get your Biafra, pls approach relevant bodies like UN or whatever, to conduct referendum. That is a more sensible approach, rather than subjecting other peaceful tribes living in the north, who have nothing to do with your Biafra to untimely death through your terrible hate speeches.

You must be out of your mind!
All the killing your ilks has perpetuated on innocent southerns all these years, are you saying that they caused it?, that the Fulanis are justified to kill without any repercussion?. How did the igbo's asked (caused) the cartoonist in Denmark that drew the a cartoon of prophet Mohammed, what of France?.

It is people like you that makes me want to support Nnamdi Kanu, although i do not like his method of agitation.
It is people like you that prompts some of us to rethink our stance on Kanu.

Nobody wants war, Kanu and co are asking for referendum does not mean war. Are you guys so daft to comprehend?.
Look, so many Igbo are seating on the fence on this matter waiting for your madness to start, if it does, then kiss Nigeria good bye.

This is not 1967.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Shell Discrimination Of HND Holders, Equating Them With Bsc Third Class. by iknowwhoiam: 1:54pm On Nov 11, 2015
fratermathy:
This is getting too old and stale.

While I do not support totally embarrassing HND graduates and denying them of promotions, appointments and a chance to make a successful career, it should be noted that HND and B.Sc/B.A/B.Agric/B.Tech/LL.B/B.Fisheries/MBBS/DVM are different and the dichotomy must be emphasised.
HND is a technical diploma. It is technically not even a Degree but a National Diploma. B.Sc and its other appellations are the recognised standard for academic, theoretical and career based jobs and appointments. That is not to say HND cannot be used. It is just that HND is better off for handy middle-levelled and technical jobs/careers. The whole essence of HND is to make sure that there are middle-levelled skilled people in the society that can be called upon and relied on for their technical expertise. University graduates are seen as having done a theoretical study with much intellectual rigour and are, thus, deemed to have a high intellectual acuity for certain professions and careers. This must be known and not relegated. No matter how much sentiments come in and no matter how much we try to equate these certifications, the sacrosanct fact is that they are not the same. As long as one is a "Diploma" and another is a "Degree", they can NEVER be treated equal and same.

On the issue of Shell equating HND with Third Class, I have iterated in the previous paragraph that HND is not seen as an intellectually inclined degree but rather as a technically inclined diploma. Having a Distinction in HND only proves that you have an excellent technical expertise, perhaps even beyond that of University Degree holders. However, this does not translate into the fact that you are intellectually buoyant enough to stand a University First Class product. It doesn't add up. For one, our Nigerian Polytechnics operate a 4 points GPA system as opposed to the 5 Points used in our Nigerian varsities. Secondly, the units of courses taken in HND programmes are far lower, both individually and cumulatively, when compared with a University. Thirdly, the course contents in Polytechnics are peripheral and elementary as opposed to that of a University! Fourthly, the calibre of academic staff and their standing is much lower than that of a University. For one, a Polytechnic cannot have a Professorial Cadre! Polytechnics usually have substandard facilities and make-shift labs and instruments. All these come together to haunt the graduates of Nigerian Polytechnics!

The solution to all these bifurcations is easy. Polytechnics should be made to award a B.Tech rather than an "Ordinary" or "Higher" diploma. Polytechnic facilities should be overhauled and made to standards. The Professorial Cadre, alongside its competitive and cumbersome "floating" process, should be introduced to the Polytechnics. Polytechnics should employ the 5 or more Points GPA system and courses should be well developed, standard and carry higher units! In fact, the term "Polytechnic" should be hijacked from parlance and replaced with University of Technology or any other soothing appellation. We should always strive to follow the UK pattern in our technological pedagogical system.

Finally, on the issue of ostracization and stigmatization, I believe it is only Nigerian Legislative Bodies that can end this once and for all. As long as they are comfortable with it, nothing will change! Let's just stop flogging this issue and look forward to better things! This issue has been discussed, ignited and quenched severally since Nigerian employers' decisions to employ preferential treatments! It is time we either take drastic measures or simply let it go as we have always done.

#MyTake
Mr. Baminasri, I am sorry about your plight! Your best is yet to come. I'd advise you to get a PGD and possibly a Masters though.

CC:
Freemanan, Freeemanan, Goodboiy, Scholes0, LordAdam; What do you think? wink

This is trash, HND and BSc are not equal but equivalent (go figure). And that does not mean that BSc is superior to HND (go figure). Degree or Diploma is just name.
I have HND in computer science. And I bet you, am far – very far from any of you who glory in their BSc. I can sit any of you down and lecture you on any subject in computer science. This I have been doing right from my ND2.

And who the hell said that University graduates are more confident that polytechnic graduates. You must high on a very cheap drug.
I refused to do the so called PGD after going through the syllabus.

I have just completed my Master’s degree program in UK and before then I was given admission in US (University of Maryland) with the despicable HND.

Not only that, I was employed from Nigeria with the same despicable HND earning salary that will make you most of you collapse.
OP don’t mind those buffoons. Just invest in yourself, look outside the shores of Nigeria, they don’t really bother themselves with the dichotomy.

Can somebody please remind me how much did Stella Oduah used in buying cars.

She was crucified for spending about a quarter of that amount.

Now am wondering why are people (Sahara-reporters) not calling for his head?.

Truth be told that site is scrape and should not have costed more than N5m ... and that's been generous.
This man should go just like Stella Oduah.

Culture / Re: Igala Language In Anambra State. by iknowwhoiam: 8:49am On Oct 12, 2014
My brother if what you wrote
Klinee:
" ME: John kayi dee? JOHN: nnaa! Udo di,ME: kabe enale? JOHN: nnaa! Ka munwa fu madu ebaa."
is what transpired then your dialect is a variant of Igbo and by extension Igala as a whole is a subset of Igbo.

adeitoro:
Even what you spoke to mr John in your conversation is Igbo language that can be easily understood by any Igboman, and saying that [quote author=Klinee post=26908605] That is igala language not igbo
is a bit mischievous and that I think is living in denial just like Ikwere.

kayi dee - keka idi (onitsha urban igbo)
kabe enale - kabe inaga (onitsha urban igbo)
has made a corollary which I belief is the perfect analogy.

Let me explain further. We have so many dialects that make up Igbo language. I stand to be corrected, no village/community in Igbo land have the same dialect. We have hundreds of dialects and for us to communicate effectively we use central Igbo which is a combination of different dialects in Igbo. No single village/community can lay claim to it.

Let me digress a little. Am from Amaigbo in Imo state, we are bordered by Nkwere, Isu, Amandugba and Amaku, we have different dialect though from from an outsider perspective, it is the same dialect, by the way, I grew up in the village so I know what writing about. When we gather in school, we know who is who. My surname is unique to my local and other people from Igbo land find difficult to pronounce it much less comprehending it albeit that the same name with the same meaning with different pronunciation as used in other parts of Igbo land.

When am with people from my area I speak my dialect and when I am with other Igbo's I speak central Igbo, and I belief this applies to every other Igbo person.

I can understand what you wrote "kayi dee?, kabe enale?"more than Ohafia/Nsuka/Abariba/most parts of Enugu, ,Ebonyi and Anambara state dialects. I can understand Ikwere, Igbo Delta and other parts of Nigeria who are seriously disowning their Igbo heritage without straining my ears.

I think your dialect is been over recognizance for it to be in ABS radio2 Onitsha considering the percentage (2% or 5%) of your population in Anambra State. My candid advice to you is to maintain your dialect, speak it amongst yourselves, in your village meetings and gathering. If other sub-groupings in Igbo will start glamouring for their dialects to be recognize with the way you are pushing yours, then there will be chaos. Let it be.

Anyway I don't blame you, I will blame those where in an office in Lagos, took a map and draw random lines dividing tribes and communities for their own selfish end.

"15 percent of nigerians are scammers.

He didn't lie
Tasteless joke tho"
======================================================================================
How did you come about your figures? Did you just conjure it this number yourself? How did you determine your sample size? What is your confidence level? What is your confidence interval? What is your response distribution? By the way I have two questions for you.

1. How do you arrive at your conclusion that all the scam letters emanates from Nigeria and by Nigerians
2. If some or all of the scam letters emanates from Nigerian, does it mean that all Nigerians are scammers?

This is an elementary logic. Granted that some of the scammers are Nigerians and personally I do receive almost on a daily basis such letters in itself does not make it an exclusivity of Nigerians. Am in IT and I have traced some of these letters, Guys many of them did not emanate from Nigeria. Some of the IP Addresses are spoofed to make it look like it came from Nigeria, but if you know your way around, you will be surprised to know where some of these letters came from (wouldn’t go into details).
Some Americans, Russians, Chinese etc. are hackers, some write viruses, are they labeled as such? Some Americans use hard drugs (cocaine, Heroin --- all the works) are they labeled as such? Who thought the world (Nigerians) how to scam? Please I will like you to answer the question.

This is all about perception. The western press had labeled Nigerians as scammers. Any bad thing that happens in the western world is treated as an isolated case and May not even get the attention of the press most times, but if it happened in African then it is a pattern. You will hardly read any positive thing from western press about Africa, mostly it is negatives things.

Simple logic, if somebody says Nigerians scammers, then you who is not a scammer and a Nigerian is a scammer……right? This is RUBBISH.
I refused to be labeled as such.

I challenge anybody to name any negative thing(s) that Africans/Nigerians do that the west does not do even worst.

Nigeria government should call this man to order.
