We share information on Boko Haram with Nigeria – US

JULY 31, 2015 : BAYO AKINLOYE

United States has said it is supporting the Federal Government in terms of intelligence sharing in the fight against Boko Haram.

US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, stated this on Friday in a Facebook question and answer session.

Entwistle pointed out that the US government under President Barack Obama was doing its best to make Nigeria wins the war against terrorism.

The envoy added, “No partner is doing more to help you against Boko Haram than the United States. We hope to train more of your troops; we are glad to discuss weapons transfers and we engage in significant information sharing, which I cannot discuss in detail in this setting.

“We also are doing everything we can to support the population of internally displaced Nigerians from the north-east and to help Nigeria create conditions that will prevent something like the scourge of Boko Haram from ever happening again in Nigeria.

“The US has for years had a beneficial working relationship with the Nigerian military, especially in the counter-terrorism struggle against Boko Haram. Now more than ever, we are committed to assisting our Nigerian partners as appropriate. That involves training, sharing of information and, in some cases, helping the Nigerian military with its equipment needs.

“The Leahy amendment requires that for all countries, we can not train known human rights abusers or that our equipment not be used in depredations against civilian populations.”

Entwistle noted that paying attention to human rights would not distract from fighting terrorists.

He explained that on the contrary, it would make for a stronger counter-terrorism effort since it allowed the military to keep civilian populations on their side in the midst of the incredibly difficult task of fighting terrorists, who did not care about human rights or protecting civilians.

On stolen Nigeria’s money allegedly in US banks, the ambassador stated that the US government was ready to continue its efforts to “find funds that were ‘looted out of the country’ and may now be in the US bank accounts.”

He, however, urged Nigerians to exercise patience, saying the process of finding the looted funds was an “extremely complicated process which takes detailed investigation.”

According to Entwistle, the cases can sometimes take time in the US courts.

And this is what you folks never understand.

You are not talking about 'the north ' here. You are talking about human beings.

It is so easy to dispassionately make statements like these when you're dehumanizing everything to a mythical 'the north' figure. But this is about real human beings like you, real breathing, thinking folks who have families like you. Folks who are being beaten, tortured , molested, shot and imprisoned. Family units broken up irreparably.

would you be overjoyed to hear folks dismiss any of your reasonable complaints as 'it's just the south east '?

why should you care what faceless bigots think, when you should be worried about you losing your own humanity and ability to emphasize.

While I do not wish ill on anyone friend or foe! But I am disgusted at the attitude of northern elders who apparently never gave a fork about boko haram killings until they started killings their kind.

And as if that was not enough when ihejirika matched bokos fire for fire, this same northern elders including buhari started crying that war against boko is war against the north which actually is the truth because boko haram is made up of hausafulanikanuri.

Now the next thing is for anyone to be thinking of questioning the only military commander that dealth deadly blow to boko haram since the first began.

It is the height of absurdity

Rubbish

It has never ceased to amaze me that the same folks who condemn the Nigerian security forces for the Apo killings, who blame the Nigerian armed forces for Biafra Era massacres and who condemn the Nigerian army for blood punitive massacres in the Niger delta (e.g Odi) suddenly seems convinced that there are no human rights violations in the North by the army, the numerous recorded cases of violations and torture are null and void and those who complain are 'boko haram supoorters'

This is the Intellectual dishonesty some educated nigerians indulge in, and it's just laughable.

And in any of those apparent cases of genocide & massacres, have anyone ever charged the nigerian army to ICC ? Were those cases not justified as collateral damages & even some miserable people from the north & sw gloat over those ills as achievements?

Guy to hell with the north.

Ihejirika should face ICC for fighting boko haram. I remember when boko haram blew up igbo motor park in kano & igbo traditional rulers came all the way from the east to see & kwankwaso the most bigot governor didn't even feel like he needed to sympathize with the Igbos only sent his VP. That was when they thought boko is only after their enemy the Igbos. But now the chicken has come home to roast.

Blood letting beget Blood letting!

Don't know why people should work themselves up over lives of people in the north.

Boko haram is hausa fulani kanuri movement, let them annihilate themselves, its all for the good of the country.

In fact, Ihejirika should face military tribunal for attempting to finish members of boko haram.

One of them is in power now, and since then they've been expanding their territory as envisioned by their pioneer marauder, uthman dan fodio.
