Crime / Endsars 2020: What Made Nigeria's FG To Approve SARS In The First Place by Ivaro(m): 7:15am On Oct 10, 2020
EndSARS 2020: What Made Nigeria's Federal Government To Approve SARS In The First Place?.

Note: Everything that is written within this article is none other than a product of research, critical thinking and of course, from brief interviews held with some senior Nigerian citizens.

There was a time in Nigeria, when several crimes such as kidnapping, murder, rape, bank robbery (and robbery of all kinds) became the order of the day in most states in Nigeria.

The condition then in Nigeria was so unsafe that it even brought about the creation and bloody activities of the notorious 'ISAKABA Boys' or 'Bakassi Boys' in the early 2000s whom went on a mission to end crime rate in Nigeria.

Many Nigerians then welcomed this new development as it drastically saw the decrease of the crime rate then. But after some time, the group (ISKABA Boys) or The Bakassi Boys went rogue, that is, they became uncontrollable and start carrying out some corrupt practices amongst themselves.

Innocent people were killed during this period in time of Nigeria's history and of course, even hoodlums got released from the hands of the Bakassi operatives (Their release was possible especially if the man who paid their bail fee had a very heavy wallet). Thus it now became no longer an issue of justice and fair play but now a matter of an heavy wallet of which those whom are opportuned to be rich gets to walk away unharmed after committing a crime.

One of the major reasons why Nigerians then preferred this vigilantees (The Isakaba boys or Bakassi boys) was because their own way of carrying out justice was different from how the Nigerian Police Force did theirs. They (The Isakaba boys or Bakassi boys) made use of highly charms (some even rumoured to have the ability of making them invulnerable to bullets and machete cuts) and also matchetes along with some other weapons like shotguns (and in most rare cases, an assault rifle like the AK 47).

They operated for a lot of years, until the international community started to talk about the activities of these vigilantes. Many saw it as a crude way of carrying out justice in Nigeria, stating that it's more better for someone to appear in a law court than to be hacked to death by some individuals who feel it's the right thing to do.

One of the most important reasons why Nigerians welcomed the Idea of the Isakaba boys or Bakassi Boy's on the first place, was because of how they caught and killed 'Derico Nwa Mama' a young notorious Onitsha criminal then, who was notorious for murder, robbery and rape. When he was eventually killed (as it was very hard to capture such a man since he was believed to have supernatural powers) people heaved a good sigh of relief and welcomed the idea of the Bakassi boys or the Isakaba boys.

But all that changed, when one of Nigeria's past presidents, Umar Musa Yar'adua (of Blessed memory) banned the Bakassi sect from every operating in Nigeria and demanded that they disband immediately since their group was already going rogue.

Not too long after that, the crime rate in Nigeria STARTED to increase once more and the government had no choice but to create something that is SIMILAR to the Bakassi and Isakaba boys but this time, this group will operate according to the law and render justice as it was meant to be SERVED.

So the government created SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) and then placed it under the Nigerian Police Force. At first, people welcomed this new development as these SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) operatives carried out their works without fear or favor.

They (SARS) rarely collected bribes and they didn't profile any Nigerian youth as either a fraudster or one who was up to no good. But as always, in every good thing, evil must surely poke it's head into it.

It didn't take long for some of these SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) Operatives to start doing what their what their 'predecessors' i.e the Isakaba and Bakassi boys did in the past. People were killed in SARS police stations, some people also got framed for not giving some of them money when they demanded it (The list was endless).

Also people feared them more than they feared an average Nigerian Police man. And of course, when the extra-judicial killings of innocent individuals became too rampant in the country by this uniformed SARS operatives; Nigerians got fed up and took the streets of major Nigerian cities like Abuja and Lagos to protest about it, demanding that either the government sees to it that this force is disbanded or restructuring should take place.

For a Nigerian reading this article, you can remember that sometime ago in the past, the Federal Government tried to curtail the activities of this men by changing the name of their organization from SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) to F-SARS (Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad) but that didn't make any changes to how bad some of these SARS operatives behaved as some trigger happy cops still did what they love doing against innocent Nigerians.

Now, it's not entirely necessary for the Federal Government of Nigeria to ban SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad operatives) from carrying out their duties in Nigeria all because of some of the bad eggs amongst them. Believe men when I tell you that these men have battled crime alot in Nigeria and have been successful in curtailing the rate of crime within the country.

But the best thing the government needs to is just to bring in new policies that will curb the activities of these men, banning them is not enough as their (SARS) response rate to crime is more preferable than that of an average Nigerian Police man.

Hopefully, I pray that all the mass protests being held in this country (Nigeria) will have a significant impact on the activities of these SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad operatives). We pray for better days.

Do you think SARS needs to be banned in Nigeria?; What are your thoughts on this article I'd like to see your comments in the comment section let's discuss more about it.
