The EFCC and Brazil have resolved to strengthen collaboration in tacking issues related to fraud, cybercrime and a number of transnational organized crimes affecting the economies of Brazil and Nigeria.

This indication emerged on Wednesday May 19, 2021 when the EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa paid a courtesy visit to the Brazilian Embassy, Abuja.

The EFCC boss who was received by the Brazilian Ambassador, Ricardo Guerra de Araujo, expressed regret about the activities of fraudsters targeting foreigners and foreign businesses, which he said posed a threat to the image of Nigeria and the quest for direct foreign investment.

Recalling the efforts of the Commission in helping to smash a Nigerian fraud syndicate that defrauded a Brazilian bank in the early 2000, Bawa assured that the Commission would work together with the embassy in tackling the menace of fraudsters.

In his remark, Ambassador Araujo noted that he has been in Nigeria long enough to know that only a few Nigerians were involved in fraudulent activities. He however expressed regret that the activities of the unscrupulous tiny minority was distracting him from his primary mission of promoting trade relationship between Nigeria and Brazil.

The second in command to the suspected IPOB terrorist leader known as Awurum Eze, aged 48 was arrested by the security officers in Abia state.

Following a statement read on Wednesday by the Director of Army Public Relations, Mohammed Yerima, the suspect was arrested after he had earlier escaped when the Intelligence Response Team stormed his village where he went to hide.

The statement headed, ‘Security forces arrest another IPOB/ESN terrorists’ henchman’ read, “The second in command to the neutralised IPOB/ESN terrorist leader Ikonso, Awurum Eze, has been arrested.

“The 48 years old Awurum Eze, a native of Umoneke Nta, Isiala-Mbano LGA, Imo State, had on May 4, 2021 escaped when operatives of Intelligence Response Team stormed his village house in Isiala Mbano where he was hiding.

“Intensive manhunt was thereafter launched towards tracing and arresting him. He was eventually apprehended on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, in Aba after weeks of unrelenting follow-ups by operatives.

“Awurum Eze is one of the main sponsors of the numerous killings in Imo State and has been on the wanted list of security agents for more than three months. Lagos state governor Babajide Sanwo-olu has praised his workers and cooperatives of LAGOS state on this day been the workers day.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has made announcement on resetting it's 2021 Examination to the 20th of May 2021.

Jamb added that the reason for the change was because of some adjustments within the organization

According to a statement read by Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the Head of Public Affairs and Jamb Protocols, said it would not affect the other things, adding the date for the UTME fixed for between June 5 and 19 2021.

The statement said; “The 2021 mock examination earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday, April 30, 2021, has now been rescheduled to hold on Thursday, May 20, 2021.”

“This change of date is owing to some ongoing adjustments in the Board’s operational processes. The change, however, would not affect the mock examination and other schedules including the date for the UTME fixed for June 5 to 19 June, 2021. Candidates who have registered and have chosen to sit the mock and other critical stakeholders are to note this change of date.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Office on Monday, February 22, 2021, arraigned one Mary Maisirat Akerele on a five count charge bordering on stealing to the tune of Thirty Five Million Five Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira (N35,520,000.00) before Justice Abiodun Akinyemi of the Ogun State High Court 4, Abeokuta.

Trouble started for the 46-years-old socialite, who resides in Aseko area of Idiroko Ogun State, when the EFCC received a petition, alleging that she collected the said sum in installments from one Alhaja Oladoja Abike for the purpose of supplying four truck-load of rice from a rice milling company at Bida, Niger state but diverted the funds.

A Nigerian Air Force Intelligence Reconnaissance aircraft crashed, yesterday, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, killing all seven persons on board.

The military aircraft, a King Air B350 plane, crash-landed on final approach path of Abuja Runway 22 at 10:48 am, shortly after the pilot complained of engine failure.

The aircraft exploded on impact, triggering a ball of flames.

Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika, who first confirmed the crash on his twitter handle, said: “A military aircraft, King Air 350, has just crashed short of our Abuja runway after reporting engine failure en route Minna.”

He said the aircraft, marked NAF 201, departed Abuja at 1033UTC with seven persons on board, including two crew members. ‘’The aircraft reported engine failure at time 1039 and crashed landed on the final approach path of Abuja Runway 22 at time 1048UTC. Fire services are already at the scene of the accident. All seven persons on board were reported dead,’’ the minister said.

A source at the control tower of the airport, said the pilot complained of engine failure barely moments after take-off.

The source, who pleaded anonymity, said there had been regular flights from Abuja to Minna since the abduction of the Kangara students last week.

“The aircraft was on its way to Minna. Moments after, on getting to Bassa Local Government Area, he informed the control tower that he had experienced an engine failure. He was advised to return to the Abuja airport immediately but it crash-landed,’’ the source said.

Asked if the identities of those on board had been ascertained, the source said they were in the process of doing so. “There have been frequent flights to Niger State since the abduction of the students at Kagara. Last week, some ministers also flew. Soon, we will know their identities,” he said. Also confirming the crash yesterday, the Nigerian Air Force said seven persons died in the crash.

Director of NAF Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Ibikunle Daramola, who gave the confirmation in a statement, also disclosed that Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao, has ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of the crash.

While commiserating with all NAF personnel and families of the deceased, the CAS urged the general public to remain calm and await the outcome of the investigation.

The statement read:”This is to confirm that a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Beech Aircraft B 350 crashed while returning to Abuja airport after reporting engine failure en route Minna. “First responders are at the scene. Sadly, all the seven personnel on board died in the crash.

“The Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident while urging the general public to remain calm and await the outcome of the investigation, the CAS on behalf of all NAF personnel, commiserates with families of the deceased.”

The identity of the personnel involved were not made public but Vanguard gathered it is standard operations practice to allow the NAF authorities get across to their next of kins and inform them before making the names public.

The names of those on board include Flight Lieutenant Haruna Gadzama, (Pilot); Flight Lieutenant Henry Piyo (Co-Pilot); Flying officer Michael Okapra (Airborne Tactical Observation System (ATOS Specialist); Warrant Officer Bassey Etim (ATOS Specialist) and Flight Sergeant Olasunkanmi Olawunmi (ATOS Specialist).

Others are Sergeant Ugochukwu Oluka (ATOS Specialist) and Aircraftman Adewale Johnson (Onboard Technician).

Reacting to the crash, President Muhammadu Buhari expressed sadness over it.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Adesina, President Buhari extended his heartfelt condolences to family members, friends and colleagues of those who died as a result of the tragedy.

The 71-year-old passed away in a hospital in Porto Alegre after testing positive for COVID-19.

The Commander, 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Abdullahi Mohammed has handed over a traditional ruler of Obufa Obio, Ekong Anaku Akan Esio Clan, Calabar South LGA of Cross River State to the Police.

The traditional ruler, Chief Okon Essien, 45, was arrested alongside his two sons for alleged kidnapping in the community.

Addressing newsmen in Calabar, the Commander, 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Abdullahi Mohammed said preliminary investigations revealed that the traditional ruler, his two sons Victor Okon, 21 years and Offiong Okon, aged 20, were in charge of kidnapping operations in the community.

The Commander who was represented by the Officer Commanding 13 Brigade Provost, Major Stanley Ikpeme said investigations into the activities of the traditional ruler has commenced.

“You are please requested to furnish this office with the outcome of your investigation to enable us to update our record, the representative of the Brigade Commander said.

The army also arrested and paraded armed robbery suspects with charms purported to be used for robbery operations.

Among the criminal suspects arrested by the troops of Operation Akpakwu are 26 years old James Edet, who was said to have dispossessed members of his community around the Scanobo Filling station axis of their valuables until he was caught by the troops.

Nigerian singer, Peter Okoye, alias Mr P, has vowed never to speak on national issues again after being labelled a ”fool” by a follower on Twitter.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Unit of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA has arrested a drug baron, Mr Chidi Olife who escaped arrest for unlawful importation of 5.250kg of heroin concealed in books from Karachi, Pakistan to Lagos since June 2010.

Olife’s arrest in Lagos came just as operatives of the anti-drug agency in Adamawa state nabbed an illicit drug dealer, Rabiu Imam on Friday, February 19, 2021, with Tramadol tablet 225mg weighing 45.4kg.

The Adamawa state Commander of the NDLEA, Idris Bello while briefing the Chairman/Chief Executive of the agency, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) on Saturday, said other illicit drugs recovered from Imam include; Tramadol capsules 100mg weighing 550grms; Diazepam tablet 850grms.

He said the drug trafficker was arrested in a house at Unguwan Madina, Mubi North Local Government area of Adamawa State. He put the estimated street value of the seized drugs at over N50 million.

“It’s a trans business border business because the illicit drugs were moved from Onitsha, Anambra state through Yola to Mubi and heading to Cameroon and Chad”, Mr Bello added.

A statement by the agency giving the details of Olife’s arrest states that following vital intelligence on the drug source, flight details, date and place of arrival, weight and mode of concealment, name, phone number and address of the recipient of the consignment, a planned controlled delivery operation was coordinated and led by the Commander NDLEA’s JTF, DCN Adeniyi Olumuyiwa.

The careful execution of the operation led to the arrest of Oladimeji Oladotun and Alhaji Danjuma Idris while processing the documents for clearing the consignment. Both were the clearing agents hired by Chidi Olife, the owner of the drug.

Upon being arrested, Alhaji Idris Danjuma, one of the clearing agents was used to effect the arrest of Oke Ningo who Chidi contacted to receive the consignment from the agents on his behalf, unfortunately, he escaped arrest at the point of receiving the drug as he suspected the person with the clearing agent to be an NDLEA officer.

Chairman Nigerian Union of Teachers, (NUT) Taraba state, Comrade Peter Jurius Vow, has urged all the teachers in the state to be carrying their guns while going to their respective schools to protect themselves and their pupils.
Jurius stated this in reaction to the abduction and kidnapping of students in some states of Nigeria.

He also credited his view on the recent statement made by the Nigerian minister for defense, Bashir Magashi, that Nigerians should be ready to defend themselves against bandits.
He added that the future of Nigeria is at stake, going by the level of kidnapping and abduction of students.

“These children being held by bandits are doctors, journalists, professors, governors or world leaders of tomorrow.

The operatives of the Abuja Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have uncovered yet another underworld ‘academy’ for the grooming of internet fraudsters.

The ‘academy’ located in Arab Contractors Area of Mpape Hills, a suburb of Abuja, was discovered when operatives, acting on intelligence, stormed the base on Thursday February 18, and arrested 27 internet fraud suspects.

The coordinator of the ‘academy’ is said to be 30-year-old Emmanuel Clement, and his ‘students’ are mostly young school leavers, ladies inclusive, within the age range of 18 to 25 years.

The Maiduguri Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on February 18, 2021 arraigned one Dala Alhaji Gana before Justice Aisha B. Kumalia of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri ...on a three count charge bordering on cheating to the tune of Twenty Nine Million Naira (N29,000,000.00).

The defendant’s trouble started when the EFCC received a petition, alleging that he collected the said sum in installments for the purpose of investing the money in a business with promises of returns for the complainant.

Investigation however revealed that the defendant neither invested the money nor return the funds to the complainant.

Count one of the charge reads, “that you Dala Alhaji Gana sometime in May, 2019 in Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court fraudulently induced Ali Goni Lawal and Mohammed Maidugu by deceiving them to deliver the total sum of Two Hundred Thousand Riyals (R200,000) equivalent of Twenty Million Naira (N20,000,000.00) at exchange rate of One Hundred Naira (N100.00) per Riyal, being money to invest in a business and thereby ........... The Ilorin and Kaduna Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Thursday February 18, 2021 secured the conviction of two persons, Oyeniran Olamilekan and Umar Gambo for offences that border on internet fraud and impersonation.

28-year-old Olamilekan, an Electrician, was sentenced to six months imprisonment by Justice Adenike Akinpelu of the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin on one count of internet fraud.

Oyeniran was among the 33 internet fraud suspects arrested in Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State on September 15, 2020.

The charge against him reads: "That you, Oyeniran Olamilekan (Mike Johnson), sometime between June 2020, in Ilorin within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did cheat by personation when you pretended to be Mike Johnson a white female with gmail account mikejohnson2058@gmail.com, and fraudulently deceived one Bill Irvin to send $1,100.00 (One Thousand, One Hundred US Dollars) to you through gift cards after you made him believe you were a girl in love with him and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 321 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 324 of the same Penal Code."

Following his "guilty plea" on Monday February 15, 2021 when he was arraigned by the anti-graft agency, the facts of the case were reviewed and the court adjourned till today for judgment.

Delivering judgment today, Justice Akinpelu said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubts, and convicted the defendant as charged.

After listening to the plea for leniency by the defence counsel, A.A Usman, the Judge said, "in order to serve as deterrent to others, the convict is hereby sentenced to six months imprisonment with an option of fine of N300,000.00 (Three Hundred Thousand Naira Only).

The draft of N180, 000 (One Hundred and Eighty Thousand Naira Only) brought by the convict as restitution and the phone recovered from him, being the instrument used in perpetrating the crime, were also forfeited to the Federal Government.
