Politics / Exchange Rate Scam Version II: Unmasking The New Wave Of Corruption by Jatuski: 4:39pm On Jun 10 |
By; AMBASSADOR ALIYU BIN ABBAS In a sinister twist reminiscent of past financial malfeasance, the Nigerian government finds itself embroiled in another exchange rate manipulation scandal, dubbed "Exchange Rate Scam Version II." This latest scheme exposes a sophisticated network within the corridors of power, exploiting the black market to engineer illicit gains while plunging ordinary Nigerians into deeper economic despair. A Devious Plot Unveiled The Exchange Rate Scam Version II operates through a cunning strategy: key figures in the Nigerian government, leveraging their influence and insider knowledge, hoard vast amounts of U.S. dollars. These officials then manipulate the black market by strategically releasing and buying back dollars, artificially inflating and deflating the exchange rate at will. By doing so, they execute trades that yield substantial profits, exploiting the lack of proper regulation and oversight in the black market. A Perfect Crime Unlike previous scams where government cronies were handed dollars through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at official rates—only to sell them on the black market for immediate profit—this new version is more insidious. The clandestine nature of black market transactions allows these corrupt officials to operate under the radar, making it difficult to trace and prove their illicit activities. The black market's opacity provides the perfect cover for these manipulations, facilitating what is essentially the perfect crime. Economic Misery for Ordinary Nigerians The ramifications of this scheme are devastating for the Nigerian populace. The manipulated exchange rates have led to the skyrocketing prices of food, goods, and services, exacerbating the already dire economic conditions faced by many. The cost of imported goods, which form a significant portion of Nigeria's consumption, has soared, putting essential items out of reach for the average citizen. The ripple effects are widespread: farmers struggle with the inflated cost of imported agricultural inputs, businesses grapple with increased operational costs, and consumers are hit with higher prices for basic necessities. The resulting economic instability undermines public confidence and fuels social unrest, creating a vicious cycle of hardship and discontent. The Human Toll For many Nigerians, the impact of these manipulations is not just an economic statistic but a harsh reality that affects their daily lives. Families find it increasingly difficult to afford basic food items as prices for staples such as rice, bread, and cooking oil surge. Educational expenses have also ballooned, making it challenging for parents to provide quality education for their children. Healthcare costs have risen as well, putting essential medical services out of reach for many. Small business owners, already grappling with a difficult economic environment, face heightened challenges. The increased costs of goods and services reduce their profit margins, leading to business closures and job losses. This, in turn, exacerbates unemployment and contributes to rising poverty levels across the country. A Call for Accountability The Nigerian government must address this growing scandal with urgency and transparency. There is an immediate need for stringent measures to regulate and monitor the exchange market, ensuring that those responsible for manipulating rates are held accountable. Strengthening financial oversight and enhancing the transparency of foreign exchange transactions are critical steps towards restoring economic stability and public trust. Experts advocate for the implementation of a robust monitoring framework that includes independent audits and real-time surveillance of foreign exchange transactions. Additionally, legal reforms are necessary to close loopholes that allow such corrupt practices to thrive. International cooperation and assistance may also play a role in tracking and curbing these illicit activities. Political Implications The Exchange Rate Scam Version II has significant political ramifications as well. As public outrage grows, political leaders and parties must navigate the complex terrain of public opinion and voter dissatisfaction. The scandal has the potential to influence upcoming elections, with opposition parties likely to use it as a rallying point against the current administration. Moreover, the international community is watching closely. Nigeria's reputation on the global stage is at stake, and the government must demonstrate a commitment to fighting corruption and fostering economic stability. Failing to address these issues could lead to reduced foreign investment and strained diplomatic relations. Conclusion Exchange Rate Scam Version II is a stark reminder of the lengths to which corruption can go, exploiting systemic weaknesses for personal gain at the expense of the nation. As ordinary Nigerians bear the brunt of these manipulations, it is imperative for the government to act decisively. Rooting out corruption and implementing robust economic safeguards will be essential in safeguarding Nigeria's future and ensuring that the interests of its people are protected. In the face of such challenges, vigilance and accountability are the watchwords for a nation striving to overcome the dark shadow of corruption and build a more equitable and prosperous society. The path forward may be fraught with difficulties, but with collective resolve and transparent governance, Nigeria can emerge stronger and more resilient. Education / Waziri Adam’s Failure To Complete Phd At University Of Lagos 14 Years After by Jatuski: 6:12pm On Jun 09 |
By; AUWALU UMAR The attention of Management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) has been drawn to a press release issued today (Sunday, 9th June, 2024) by Malam Waziri Isa Adam, a staff member of the institution, accusing the University Management of his failure to complete his PhD degree at the University of Lagos 14 years after enrolment for the programme. The staff, an Assistant Lecturer at the institution’s Department of Mass Communication, also claimed that his academic pursuits had been “unfairly targeted due to his outspoken criticism of the VC’s actions”, which, he further said, had “caused significant delays and obstacles in his academic pursuits”. Given the wishy-washy manner in which he presented his PhD update as captured in the release simply to deceive the public, it is pertinent for the University Management to respond and make official clarification on the matter. Malam Adam has been an Assistant Lecturer since 28th January, 2009 after his upgrade from Graduate Assistant following completion of his MSc Mass Communication degree from the University of Lagos. He has been on that rank for well over 15 years now because of his inability to meet the institution’s academic promotion requirements. He joined the services of Ahmadu Bello University as a full-time staff on the rank of Graduate Assistant on 20th February, 2006. So he has been a stagnated academic staff for more than 18 years, a period long enough for him to attain the peak of his career. Those, who came much later than him, are either Associate Professors or Professors now. Adam had sought and obtained admission in 2010/2011 academic session to undertake PhD in Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, for which he was awarded Study Fellowship for a period of three years with full pay by Ahmadu Bello University from 22nd November, 2010 to 21st November, 2013. He was further awarded the then Education Trust Fund (ETF) Academic Staff Training and Development Intervention award in the sum of N1,600,000 in 2010. At various times he sought and was given financial support by the University to cover tuition fees, accommodation, books, and research costs. On request, the study Fellowship was extended from 22nd November, 2013 to 21st November, 2014; and from 22nd November, 2014 to 21st November, 2015 in the first and second instances respectively to enable him to complete the PhD degree. In November, 2015, Malam Waziri Isa Adam returned to the University to continue teaching activities without completing the PhD. On 1st February, 2016, he sought another one year extension of the Study Fellowship to enable him to complete the programme. At that point, his Head of Department informed the then Vice-Chancellor that Waziri Isa Adam was teaching (without permission) at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi. Consequently, the University requested him via a letter dated 9th March, 2016 that he should provide an official progress report on his PhD programme at the University of Lagos. Adam did not respond to the inquiry and so his request was not granted. On 10th February, 2021, he re-applied for two years Leave of Absence from the University to enable him to complete the PhD. To enable the University process his request, he was further asked to provide comprehensive report on the outcome of the Study Fellowship previously awarded to him from 22nd November, 2010 to 21st November, 2023, and the two extensions granted him. He was also requested to explain the status of the then ETF Academic Staff Training and Development Intervention award made to him. Adam also did not respond to the inquiry and his request was not granted. On 11th May, 2021, the University requested Adam to submit progress report of his PhD academic standing through his Head of Department, which he also chose not to respond to. In a desperate attempt to distract the University and avert accountability, Adam has suddenly turned to his well-known and age-long blackmail style on the University Management using the platform of the newspaper business that he runs on full-time basis. While it is unclear if the newspaper, Education Monitor, is registered with relevant regulatory agencies or not, Adam has continued to publish spurious allegations against the Management of the University. When Prof. Kabiru Bala assumed duty as the Vice-Chancellor, Adam expected that the new administration would patronise him as the previous administrations used to. At various times in the past, he was appointed as media consultant and he was also patronised through placements of adverts in Education Monitor. It is crystal clear to him that Prof. Kabiru Bala would not be stampeded or coerced into his antics. Auwalu Umar is the Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Office of Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, he sent in this piece on Sunday, 9th June, 2024

Politics / AYCF Urges Peaceful June 12 Celebrations, Condemns Plans Of Violent Protests by Jatuski: 9:43am On Jun 09 |
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has said that is gravely concerned about recent reports of plans by certain groups to disrupt the June 12 Democracy Day celebrations by instigating chaos and violence. AYCF in a statement by its President General Yerima Shettima, made available yesterday, strongly condemned any form of protest or demonstration intended to disrupt the peace and stability of Nigeria, particularly on the June 12 Democracy Day when the nation commemorates its hard-fought struggle for freedom and democracy. "The AYCF believes that any disturbance could undermine the significance of this symbolic day and strongly condemns any form of protest or demonstration that seeks to disrupt the peace and stability of our country, especially on a day as significant as Democracy Day. As a youth organization committed to the advancement and unity of our nation, we believe that peaceful dialogue and constructive engagement are the most effective tools for driving positive change and progress," Shettima said. While acknowledging the legitimacy of peaceful protests as a form of expression, Shettima warned that when such activities escalate into violence, it undermines the very principles of democracy that is being celebrated. "Though protest and demonstration are legitimate, when these activities escalate into violence, destruction of property, and endangering of lives, they no longer serve their intended purpose and instead it undermines the very democracy we seek to uphold," Shettima noted. Addressing the importance of Democracy Day, Shettima emphasized, "On a day like Democracy Day, when we commemorate the hard-fought struggle for freedom and democracy in our country, it is particularly important to uphold the values of peace, unity, and progress. Disrupting the peace and stability of our nation on such a significant day only detracts from the achievements and sacrifices of those who fought for our democracy." Shettima called on all Nigerians to use this day for reflection, gratitude, and solidarity. "Celebrating our Democracy Day should be a time for reflection, gratitude, and solidarity as we honor the sacrifices made by our forefathers to secure our freedom. It is a day when we should come together as one nation, setting aside our differences and focusing on the progress and development of our country," he said. To ensure that the day's celebrations proceed without incident, Shettima urged the government to take decisive action. "Maintaining law and order is crucial not only for the safety and security of the citizens but also for upholding the principles of democracy. The government has a responsibility to protect its people and ensure that they can exercise their rights and freedoms without fear of intimidation or violence." He further stated, "Any attempts to disrupt the peace and stability of the Democracy Day celebrations must be met with swift and severe consequences. Those who seek to sow chaos and disorder should be held accountable for their actions and face the full force of the law." In addition to punitive measures for potential troublemakers, Shettima advocated for increased security. "Increased security measures, including the deployment of law enforcement personnel and the implementation of crowd control measures, should be put in place to deter any potential threats to public safety." Shettima concluded with a call to action for the youth and all citizens: "We urge all citizens, especially the youth, to engage in peaceful and constructive means of advocacy and dialogue to address their grievances and push for the change they desire. Let us work together to build a better and more inclusive society, where the rights and aspirations of all citizens are respected and protected."

Nairaland / General / Don't Accept Less Than N250k Minimum Wage From Tinubu, Frank Tells Labour Unions by Jatuski: 3:39pm On Jun 07 |
*Says what is good for judicial office holders is good for Nigerian workers Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Friday, called on the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress to reject any minimum wage offer from the federal government that is less than N250,000.00 per month. Frank who was reacting to reports of alleged Federal Government’s offer of N105,000.00 to workers as new minimum wage during their ongoing tripartite negotiation, said: “any amount below N250,000.00 cannot be considered a decent wage for Nigerian workers considering the present socio-economic hardship in the country.” In a statement in Abuja, Frank accused the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration of double standards in the fixing of salaries, saying what is good for judicial office holders is good for Nigerian workers. According to the Bayelsa-born political activist, Tinubu recently sent a Bill to the National Assembly in which he proposed 300 per cent increase in the salaries and allowances of Supreme Court Justices, Appeal Court Justices, President of the National Industrial Court, Judges of the Federal and State High Courts as well as Grand Khadi of State Sharia Courts, among others, in the country. He noted that the Bill has been hurriedly passed as proposed by the President in both chambers of the National Assembly and now awaiting the assent of the President to become enforceable law. Frank who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, said: “How can you increase the salary of an arm of government that is already earning a humongous salary by 300 per cent and add peanuts to the paltry N30,000 that workers have been compelled to live with in this country as minimum wage in the last five years? “Why did the President send an Executive Bill to the National Assembly to effect a 300 per cent upward review in the salaries of Judicial Office Holders but set up a tripartite committee to negotiate a “starvation wage” (apologies to NLC President Joe Ajaero) for suffering Nigerian workers instead of a “living wage” he promised them on assumption of office in May last year?” He said that the executive, legislative and judicial arms of government ought to reduce their salaries and allowances to accommodate Nigerian workers who can barely have one meal a day rather than increasing their take home which is already over bloated and economically, financially and socially suffocate workers. He however declared that “Nigerians are no fools as they know that the proposed generous increase in the salaries of Judicial Office Holders is meant to pay them for the devious work they did to judicially ratify the stay of key political office holders in this administration in office including President Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, among others, and to compromise them ahead of any judicial challenge in future polls.” He reiterated that workers are the engine room of the nation’s economy and that paying them a living wage will boost their morale to work diligently and even pay the supreme price in line of duty for the country’s development if need be. He therefore urged the leadership of organized labour to be resolute in their demand to ensure that workers get a deserved living wage at this time in the nation’s developmental journey. He urged them to leave their foot prints on the sands of time by being non-compromising but warned that doing otherwise will inscribe their names in the hall of shame.

Business / Customs FOU Zone B Intercepts Pangolin Scales Worth Almost N4bn by Jatuski: 3:01pm On Jun 05 |
*Comptroller tasks public to support NCS on fight against smuggling In its renewed vigour to preserve endangered species, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B, has intercepted Pangolin scales meant for export, worth almost N4 billion Naira. This was disclosed by the Comptroller FOU Zone B, Ahmadu Bello Shuaibu at a press briefing held on Wednesday June 5, 2024 at the unit's headquarters in Kaduna. "Acting on actionable intelligence the operatives stormed a hideout known as (slaughter house) in the suburbs of Zuru Town in Kebbi State on Friday, May 24 2024 at about 1600hrs. The team discovered and evacuated sacks of pangolin scales which were transported to the HQ of FOU Zone 'B' in Kaduna. After careful examination and counting, the pangolin scales weighed 445.45kg. "Let me once again explain that the pangolin specie is one of the endangered species that is protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flaura (CITES). "It is instructive that Nigeria is signatory to the CITES Convention and all forms of trading in this species are clearly illegal. The Nigeria Customs Service will continue to partner CITES to forestall the identified species from going into extinction. "The value of this seizure at the International market is Three Billion, Nine Hundred and Fifty-Five Million, Five Hundred and Ninety-Six Thousand Naira (#3,955,596,000.00) only," he said. He explained that the media briefing within a space of two weeks from the last held, is to intimate on the anti-smuggling exploits of the Federal Operations Unit Zone 'B' Kaduna. "You may recall that during our recent briefing on May 21, 2024, we declared our resolve not to allow illegal trading in endangered wildlife species and other smuggling activities to thrive in the Zone. "Between that time and today which is barely two weeks, our operatives have upped-the-ante in the combat against smuggling of protected species and successfully intercepted a consignment of Pangolin scale and its derivatives within Kebbi State axis of the Zone," he said. Speaking further, he said that, "One (1) suspect was arrested in connection with this seizure, while the main suspect is currently at large. However, the Unit in collaboration with other sister agencies will not rest on its oars until the main suspect is arrested and brought to book. "The offence contravene Section 55 (1) paragraph C and I of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Act 2023," he said. The FOU Zone B Comptroller said that the success of the operation lies in robust intelligence sharing between the NCS and Wild life Office and the resilience by operatives of the Unit to leverage and utilize the coordinates given to them to make this arrest. "We wish to put it on record that the success of the operation is unique in that it was casualty free. "From empirical evidence, we make bold to say that those involved in the illegal trafficking of endangered species are hiding under it to launder money used in procuring drugs, arms and other illegal merchandise. You can imagine the havoc this may have caused if it had escaped the eagle eyes of our operatives," he said. He therefore, called on the general public to continue to cooperate and stand with the NCS on its fight against smuggling. We must work together to salvage this country and to actualize the dream of our founding fathers. "May l at this juncture repeat that the Unit shall continue to enforce the Federal Government policies in line with International best practices, no matter the campaign of calumny against the service," he said.

Nairaland / General / Challenges Of 2023 Polls Created Doubts In Minds Of Electorate - IPC by Jatuski: 9:23pm On May 23 |
Executive Director of International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, has said that some challenges experienced from the 2023 general elections have created doubts on the minds of the electorate. He expressed this while delivering the welcome address at a One-day Multi-stakeholders Dialogue on Rebuilding Trust in the Electoral Processes, Institutions, and Elections, held on Thursday, May 25, 2024, at Bafra Hotel, Kaduna, Kaduna State-Nigeria. "As we do know, while the elections recorded commendable landmarks, particularly in terms of meticulous planning and the use of voting technology via BVAS, it also had challenges some of which have created doubts in the minds of sections of the electorate. " Indeed, what can be deduced from the various comments and opinions is that trust and confidence issues about the electoral processes, electoral institutions, and elections have to be urgently addressed because they are essential for ensuring the desired participation of citizens in activities that can lead to credible elections," he said. According to him, Conant Leadership says that, “trust is the single most essential element to our ability to deliver extraordinary results in an enduring way” and that “Trust leads to high because it enables an organization to work as it should; it’s the first defense against dysfunction and the first step towards delivering better outcomes”. Stephen R. Covey also says “Trust is the glue of life. It’s the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It’s the foundational principle that holds all relationships.” He therefore, asked rhetorically, how trust can be restored on the electorate. "Therefore, how do we continue to build trust in the electoral processes? How do we ensure that citizens go out to register and collect their PVCs? How do we ensure that they vote even after collecting their PVCs? What are our roles and responsibilities in providing the enabling environment for popular participation in elections as critical stakeholders? "The challenge of finding answers to these questions and perhaps many other ones is the main reason for our gathering today under the auspices of Component 4b: Support to Media of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria, phase two project (EU-SDGNII)," he said. The Executive Director said that IPC is confident that, "your presence here today will ensure that we find the right answers to these questions. In this regard, we wish to commend Prof. Dung Pam Sha for agreeing to be the lead speaker and also thank Dr. Abubakar Siddique Mohammed for accepting to be the chairman of this dialogue. On behalf of the International Press Centre (IPC), he welcomed special guests and distinguished participants to the multi-stakeholder dialogue on Rebuilding Trust in the Electoral Processes, Institutions, and Elections, which happens to be the third in the series after earlier ones in Abuja and Lagos. *58,740 sachets of tramadol, 48,000 ampules of Anelgin injection seized along bandits corridor While vowing to ensure the protection of species going extinct, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B, has intercepted a truck load of donkey bones meant for export, as well as dried donkey meat, worth over three billion Naira. This was disclosed during a press briefing by the Comptroller FOU Zone B, Ahmadu Bello Shuaibu, today in Kaduna. "Of great importance is the interception of the illegal products of donkey perpetrated by some unscrupulous elements with no regard for the lives and preservation of endangered species like the donkey which is near extinction. "It is therefore with a personal sense of sadness to announce that our officers and men on two separate occasions, impounded consignments of donkey bones and donkey meat, respectively, with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of about Three Billion Naira. "On the April 25, 2024, operatives of the Unit acting on credible intelligence intercepted One (1) Truck with Registration Number GGE 526 XL along Sokoto/Gusau Road in Zamfara State conveying illicit goods which were brought to Kaduna for further examination. "Upon careful examination the truck was discovered to be conveying 750 sacks of donkey bones. The DPV for the donkey bones was estimated at Two Billion, Three Hundred and Sixty Three Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N2, 363,500,000.00) only," he said. According to him, "it would interest you to know that one (1) suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure. "Again on May 5, 2024 at about 0310hrs, the operatives of the Unit intercepted Two (2) Canter Trucks carrying Dried Donkey Meat along Kontagora - Tegina Road in Niger State. After 100% physical examination the trucks were found to contain 860 sacks of Dried Donkey meat. Three (3) suspects were also arrested in connection with the seizure," he explained. Speaking further, he disclosed that the above illegal trading clearly contravenes Section 55 (1) paragraph c and i (1) of the NCS Act 2023 which says that "Import and Exports shall where applicable be subject to prohibitions and restrictions relating to: "The protection of the health and life of humans, animals, or plants; "(i) Controlled goods imported or exported in line with relevant International laws, conventions and agreements (1) relevant International laws, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)." Comptroller Shuaibu pointed out that the government is concerned that donkeys are part of rare animals that are being driven towards extinction by activities of unscrupulous elements, and Nigeria is signatory to the international convention for the continued prevention of endangering these species. "Therefore, the Unit and indeed the Nigeria Customs Service will not and cannot fold its hand and allow this illegal trade to continue to take place," he emphasized. He said that another concern is the seizure of 58,740 sachets of tramadol and 48,000 ampules of Anelgin injection that was arrested by the operatives of the Unit on the 2nd of May 2024 at about 1130hrs along Saminaka/Nimbiya/Kafanchan axis of Kaduna State. "These illicit drugs were neatly concealed with motor spare parts but our eagle eye was able to catch up with them. "Let me at this point say that the officers and men of the Unit are focused, committed and prepared to continue to carry out their assignments with utmost sense of courtesy and unwavering professionalism. "The success we are showcasing today is therefore a demonstration of our collective determination to continue to carry out our duty with undivided attention, and without fear or favour. Those who wish to try our resolve should have a rethink as we shall be unsparing in implementing the laws and policy directives of the Federal Government as directed by the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR and his management team. "Anti-smuggling initiative is fast going beyond old traditional physical measures, the NCS has sharpened its skill in intelligence gathering through improved information technology kits. "Let me use this medium to update the general public about the suspect arrested for impersonation in Sokoto, the law has taken its course on him. Nairaland / General / Peter Obi's Comments: Arewa Youth Consultative Forum Affirms Inec's Credibility by Jatuski: 8:52am On May 18 |
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has reiterated its unwavering trust in the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following recent comments made by presidential candidate Peter Obi of the Labour Party. In a statement issued by Yerima Shettima, President General of the AYCF, the forum reiterated its longstanding belief that INEC is a reputable institution that consistently upholds the principles of fairness, impartiality, and transparency in conducting elections. Peter Obi's acknowledgment that the judiciary, rather than INEC, poses the greatest challenge to Nigeria's democracy, further strengthens our conviction in the integrity of INEC. "The AYCF has long maintained that INEC is a credible, impartial, and unbiased institution that consistently conducts credible elections. Peter Obi's remarks have vindicated our stance and affirmed that INEC is not the primary obstacle to democratic electoral practices in Nigeria. "We emphasize the importance of strong institutions like INEC in ensuring the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process. He further highlighted the detrimental impact of the judiciary assuming the role of the sole arbiter in election matters. "The AYCF firmly believes that strong and independent institutions such as INEC are essential in preserving the democratic fabric of our nation. The Forum recognizes the critical role that INEC plays in upholding the will of the people through free, fair, and credible elections. "We commend INEC for its dedication to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process and safeguarding the democratic rights of Nigerian citizens. "It is our steadfast belief that any attempts to undermine the credibility of INEC or question its impartiality are detrimental to the progress of our democratic system. "The AYCF stands firm in its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance in Nigeria's electoral system. We will continue to advocate for the independence and effectiveness of INEC in carrying out its constitutional mandate". Furthermore, the AYCF condemned any undue interference or overreach by the judiciary in electoral affairs. "We believe that the judiciary's role in electoral matters should be limited to adjudicating legal disputes and upholding the rule of law, rather than assuming the primary responsibility for determining electoral outcomes. Such interference undermines the credibility and legitimacy of the electoral process and threatens the foundations of democracy in Nigeria," the statement said. The AYCF called on all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and the media, to support and uphold the independence of INEC in conducting free, fair, and credible elections, while also urging all Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively participate in the electoral process to safeguard the democratic principles upon which our nation is founded.

Politics / Frustrate Efforts Of Entrenching One Party State In Nigeria, NYLF Tasks Citizens by Jatuski: 4:12pm On May 15 |
*Renews calls for resignation of PDP National Chair to give room for vibrant opposition *Say credible intelligence indicates negotiation for foreign military bases *Vow no square meter of land in entire North will be ceded to French or American governments Nigerians, devoid of political and party affiliations have been called upon to be patriotic and join the struggle to ensure Nigeria dies not end up as a one party state. A prominent coalition, comprising over 43 groups, the Northern Youth Leader’s Forum (NYLF), made the call at a world press briefing held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital today. Addressing the press, the President of NYLF, Comrade Afiyo Elliot also called on the national chairman of main opposition, People's Democratic Party (PDP), to resign, to give room for vibrant o0position. "To this end, we call on all Nigerians to join us in this struggle to ensure that the planned destruction of the opposition parties especially the PDP, is completely halted, stopped and curtailed. "We call on the National Chairman of the PDP as a matter of national interest, to resign, suspended or be removed by the NWC or NEC respectively since he has glaringly and evidently compromised. To ensure justice and equity, his position should be given to anybody from the North –Central Zone," he said. According to the text of the briefing titled, "IT IS TIME TO SAVE NIGERIA" he explained that, "Following a definite move and subsequent calls for the protection and preservation of our nascent Democracy, we are strongly convinced that it is high time patriotic Nigerians arose and challenge the powers that are working against the very existence of Nigeria’s democratic principles and institutions in order to lead us into a one –Party State so as to institutionalise and secure authoritarian and dictatorial system in Nigeria. "It is in the light of this dangerous and unimaginable scheming and tendencies, that we are embarking on an awareness and enlightenment campaign to alert Nigerians on the dangers ahead if we allow these politicians to succeed in their machinations and manoeuvres." Comrade Afiyo stressed that they are deeply concerned with the political scheming in the opposition parties especially in the PDP, which is geared towards the destruction of the party and consequently silencing the opposition. "These plans are being carried out discreetly by some moles in the Party to hijacking the structures of the Party and completely silence their voices. "We can keenly observe that despite the introduction of unfriendly policies by the Government, a word has never come from the supposedly main opposition Party. Unfortunately, Nigerians are not talking nor observing the dangerous trend. "The National Chairman of the party who is suppose to be the main opposition Leader to give constructive criticisms so as to guarantee checks and balances,is unavoidably absent or has been on a deliberate, intentional and manipulated sabbatical (money induced) silence. "The National spokesman of the Party has taken over the role of the spokesman of the Rivers State Chapter and is rather busy with the affairs of the Rivers State House of Assembly Members at the detriment of the National affairs. We then wonder what will be the fate of Democracy in the nearest future in our Nation as we tend to sliding into a dictatorial state through a ONE –PARTY System," NYLF said. They explained that the scenario indeed calls for concern by well meaning Nigerians irrespective of tribe, religion, geo-political or party affiliations. On the rumoured siting of military base in Nigeria, NYLF expressed anger, insisting that they have credible information pointing towards that direction. "We observed with great dismay, the ongoing negotiations with the American and French Governments to relocate their Military Bases to Nigeria. We have convincing reasons, undeniable evidences and facts that the Federal Government has been negotiating with these Governments to relocate their Military Bases from Niger Republic to Nigeria precisely Sokoto or Kebbi States as a way of compensating and assuaging the American and French Governments for the inability of Nigeria to mobilise the ECOWAS for a military onslaught or attack against Niger Republic. "Though the Minister for Information and National Orientation has denied this plan, we do hope that he will not swallow his words when the time comes. "In lieu of this thereof, we want to reiterate our total opposition to this plan and urge the Federal Government to discontinue with immediate effect. We want to state clearly that,we have over the years observing the criminal activities of the French Government against the interest of Nigeria especially in the North –East and North –West geopolitical zones," the group said. They emphasized that, "we also want to state clearly that the Northern Youth will never allow a square meter of land in the entire North to be ceded to French or American Governments under any guise or reason. If the Federal Government continue with this plan, then the Government should be prepared to kill all of us. "In conclusion, we want to call upon all Patriotic Nigerians to stand for the truth always."
