Programming / IT Pro: Why Are You Still Poor? by jetsetgo: 11:04pm On May 04, 2015
Words are cheap so I will be brief (besides nairalanders hate reading long posts)

IT is no more a luxury or geekish hobby. It has driven economies and made billionaires (hint hint: Microsoft). Why then do we have 'supposedly great programmers' that are underpaid and oft not so financially handsome?

'Almost' all the IT folk on nairaland come to brag:
1) I know 59 programming languages
2) I have worked for A, B, C, D, X, Y, and Z
3) C++ is king, Java was made in heaven etc
4) I am CCIE, OBICIS, MCSE, AMEBO
5) Who can solve this code?
Mouthware developers... They are broke the world over.

The world is a very big place with even bigger problems.
1) Take one problem and solve it
2) Solve it too well
3) You can use Yoruba programming language or Calabash Networks it doesn't matter
4) Take the solution to people/organizations/stakeholders that live/work/operate in that problem domain
5) Make 1,000,000 presentations/previews
6) Focus on their problem and not how beautiful your calabash or Yoruba is
7) Give them free or on trial if your business model supports it
8.) Give them so much support and assistance they become lazy
9) Your ability to solve problems is proportional to your value.
Money has value so value brings money.

When more and more IT folks start making things, companies will be forced to pay more for the time of an IT aficionado.

Programming / Re: Dear Programmer In Nigeria: How Much Is Your Salary? by jetsetgo: 10:12pm On May 04, 2015
Abduletudaye:

Huh? Really?

Don't let anyone deceive you o!

While its true as it is written... 'seest thou a man diligent in his work? He shall stand before kings' ergo know-how is the selling point in IT... Certifications are used as a quick way to filter applications.

Other companies see it as a statement of character and more times than not it would get you through the door to showcase your skill

I love transformation
I hate "change"

Too bad! No matter how much you hate change you must experience it (From buhari and Life). Even your body, cells, life is changing everyday as you grow older.
Let me explain: You were born as a boy but you grew and changed into a man. If you get to eighty or ninety years old and your no more a man but a woman... Congratulations! You transformed sir.

Business / Re: Few Nigerian Banks May Collapse In 2016 – Report by jetsetgo: 9:13pm On May 04, 2015
There is a systematic unorderliness in the banking and bigger financial sector. There is money everywhere in this country dormant and untapped and horded by a few lunatics.
What we are experiencing is a byproduct of extreme looting... Funds meant to go from point A to B end up in C and we are talking indices and numbers like sense dey the sector! Our banks cant generate any revenue because their default condition is 'Cut Costs' not 'Improve Profits'.

At the airport waiting for the flight to sokoto.... Do you know any good hotels I can stay in preferably close to camp so as to save my self unnecessary stress.
ojophilip:
the camp food is kinda disgusting....so u've gotta hold enough money to patronize mami market....especially guys u gotta hold more money to trip ur camp gfs to mami. u will queue at the kitchen with ur foodflasks n plates.... and the food timetable often includes;

tea water + bread as breakfast.....(tea water means...hot water with sugar n milk flavour)
rice or beans as lunch ...(soup kinda tasteless)
amala or tuo as dinner....(don't bother going to d kitchen for this....u will surely end up in d toilet)

after one week in camp...the platoon kitchen competition will begin, whereby each platoon will be designated to be in d kitchen for a particular day till u leave d camp, but mind u...the kitchen workers will only permit u to help them in washing pots n d likes...but won't allow u to do the cooking cos they believe they can cook more than u do. but I promise u that the best thing out of NYSC is this 3 weeks camping after that the rest is so damn boring. can't wait for y'all to come
