British voters have started to cast their votes in the 2017 snap general election, following a fierce campaign that saw the ruling Conservative Party lose support to Labour, the main opposition.

Over 40,000 polling stations across the country opened on Thursday morning and voters will have until 10 pm local time to elect the party they deem most competent to form the next government.

More than 46 million people are eligible to vote in what is the fourth major poll in the UK over the past three years, following the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, the 2015 general election, and the 2016 Brexit vote.

Some analysts have predicted a turnout of more than 70 percent given the high stakes that are at play.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May, who made the surprising call for the vote in mid-April, is defending her party’s Parliament majority and has set eyes on more seats.

Labour, on the other hand, has recovered from a major disadvantage against the Tories under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership and is now hoping for a hung parliament, a scenario that some polls say is more than possible.
Thousands of heavily armed police officers will be guarding the polling stations as terror alert remains high in the wake of the recent wave of terror attacks across the UK.
Missing voting forms

The Election Day began with a bombshell report by The Independent about hundreds of postal votes that had gone missing.

Apparently, around 400 postal voting forms issued by Plymouth City Council had failed to reach their destination, a matter that was under investigation by Royal Mail.

The council said it had to reissue "around 370 replacement ballot packs" to those who had contacted them about their missing votes. Others with the same problem were urged to contact the officials immediately.

A retired Indianapolis fertility doctor said he used his own sperm around 50 times instead of the donated sperm his patients were expecting, impregnating several women decades ago, according to court documents.
Dr Donald Cline, 77, pleaded not guilty today to two criminal obstruction of justice charges for misleading authorities who were investigating complaints from two of the now-adult children against him.
Cline is accused of being the biological father of at least eight people, the youngest of which would be about 30.
The accusations against him were first reported by WXIN-TV in May.
The 77-year-old from the Indianapolis suburb of Zionsville told six adults who believed they were his children that he had donated his own sperm about 50 times starting in the 1970s, a probable cause affidavit said.

One of the adult children took a saliva-based DNA test through a private personal genomics company and found that she was related to at least eight other people in its database, the affidavit said.He had told his patients they were receiving sperm from medical or dental residents or medical students and that no single donor's sperm was used more than three times.
Two others also investigated their ancestry through DNA tests and learned their mothers both were patients of Cline and that they were related to 70 relatives of Cline, it said.
Cline "said he used his own sperm whenever he didn't have a donor sample available," the affidavit said he told them.
But when the state began investigating complaints, Cline denied having done so.
"I can emphatically say that at no time did I ever use my own sample for insemination," he said in a letter to the Indiana Attorney General's Office.
Cline retired from his practice at Reproductive Endocrinology Associates in Indianapolis in 2009.
Cline's lawyer, Tracy Betz, released a statement saying he is not accused of hiding documents, influencing witnesses or otherwise not cooperating with the attorney general's investigation.

Hillary Clinton said she would return to campaigning "in the next couple of days.”

US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton says she is "feeling fine" a day after she was forced to abruptly leave a 9/11 memorial in New York due to an apparent medical episode.
"I'm feeling fine and getting better," Clinton tweeted on Monday, signing her message with the "H" that indicates she personally wrote it.
"Like anyone who's ever been home sick from work, I'm just anxious to get back out there. See you on the trail soon," she said.
The candidate’s physician, Dr. Lisa Bardack said that she was diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday.
A video of the incident emerged on Sunday, showing a seemingly fainting Clinton stumbling on the sidewalk while her security detail took her into a van and drove the former secretary of state to her daughter's house.
Clinton told CNN on Monday that she "felt dizzy” and lost her balance, but added that after getting into the van and drinking some water, she “immediately started feeling better."
Clinton also said she would return to campaigning "in the next couple of days.”
“I just want to get this over and done with and get back on the trail as soon as possible," she stated.




But she felt immediately better after getting into her air-conditioned vehicle.Clinton told CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 that she felt dizzy and "did lose my balance," while waiting for the motorcade.

She said she didn't immediately disclose that she's been diagnosed with pneumonia because she "just didn't think it was going to be that big a deal'."

Clinton said her doctor told her to rest for five days, but she "didn't follow that very wise advice".

She added that she'll be back on the campaign trail "in the next couple of days".

The health scare revived concerns about a tendency towards secrecy that has dogged the former Secretary of State's run for the White House, and underscored perennial worries about the medical fitness of candidates for one of the world's most demanding jobs.

Both Clinton, 68, and Republican rival Donald Trump, 70, said they intended to release more of their medical details in the coming days, as their campaigns gear up for the November 8 election.

Roger Ailes, the founder and chairman of the Fox News American news channel, has resigned after a number of female employees accused him of sexual harassment.

Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox, which owns Fox News, announced his resignation on Thursday.

Less than two weeks ago, former Fox News presenter Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit against Ailes, claiming sexual harassment.

Further allegations surfaced recently in US media that Ailes had sexually harassed Megyn Kelly, another Fox News presenter, about 10 years ago.

Ailes, 76, has denied the allegations. He said he was resigning because he had become a "distraction."

"I will not allow my presence to become a distraction from the work that must be done every day," Ailes wrote in a letter to Murdoch.

A report published last week in the New York magazine said lawyers for 21st Century Fox gave Ailes a deadline of August 1 to resign or face termination.

Carlson claims she was fired for refusing to have sex with Ailes. "I had to stand up for myself and speak out for all women and the next generation of women in the workplace," Carlson said.

Ailes had denied Carlson's allegations, saying in a statement, "Gretchen Carlson's allegations are false. This is a retaliatory suit for the network's decision not to renew her contract, which was due to the fact that her disappointingly low ratings were dragging down the afternoon lineup."

Ailes, who launched Fox News in 1996, has long been viewed as one of America's most powerful conservatives.

He was a media consultant for Republican presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush, and for Rudy Giuliani’s first mayoral campaign.

In a written statement on Wednesday evening, Meredith McIver admitted she made a mistake by not checking Michelle Obama’s former speeches.

The statement said McIver offered to resign but the Republican presidential nominee had rejected the offer.

McIver explained that she included the parts from Michelle Obama's speech after listening to Melania read passages from the First Lady’s 2008 speech.

"Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs. Obama's speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech,” she said.

“I did not check Mrs. Obama's speeches. This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant,” she stated.
Donald Trump did not accept McIver’s resignation, calling her error “an innocent mistake.”

"She made a mistake ... we all make mistakes," Trump told ABC News.

In tweets, Trump said he was proud of the fact that his wife’s address “got more attention than any in the history of politics.”

Melania Trump had claimed she wrote her speech “with as little help as possible.”

US police forces have arrested at least 17 people in a protest that erupted outside the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Cleveland, Ohio.

The protesters burned the American flag as the convention continued at Quicken Loans Arena on Wednesday.

Those detained were still screaming while being searched and handcuffed by cops.

According to Cleveland Police, two cops were also injured in the course of the skirmishes.

Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said some of the protesters’ pants caught on fire.
"Whatever they tried to do with the flag, as we were trying to extinguish it and they were trying to keep it away, their pants leg caught on fire," said Williams, who was present at the site of the clashes. "The charge was assault on an officer because the officer tried to put it out when he saw it getting burned, and there were also counterdemonstrators who were trying to take it away."

Earlier protests near Quicken Loans Arena were reportedly more peaceful.

"There are people that their only reason for being here is disruption, disorder, chaos, hurting people and damaging property," Williams said. "Those are the only people at this point that are giving us any kind of trouble at all."
On the second day of the convention on Tuesday, the New York billionaire businessman was announced as GOP’s nominee for the 2016 vote.

The real estate tycoon will now have to face his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, to win the white House in a national vote in November.

Being branded as divisive, Trump has on several occasions offended Muslims, Hispanics, African Americans, and women, among whom he is said to be quite unpopular.

During a live speech delivered from Ankara on Wednesday, Erdogan said the state of emergency was required “to remove swiftly all the elements of the terrorist organization involved in the coup attempt.”

He further promised that the special measures, which vastly increase state security powers, would not be a “compromise on democracy".

“The aim is to rapidly and effectively take all steps needed to eliminate the threat against democracy, the rule of law and the people's rights and freedoms," he added.

Erdogan also claimed that US-based Fethullah Gulen was behind the coup.

Gulen has denied any role in the coup attempt, warning the Turks instead that the move could have been orchestrated by the government to purge its opponents.

The Turkish president made the announcement after he chaired a meeting of the National Security Council at the Presidential Palace in Ankara.
Earlier in the day, he noted that the recent coup attempt may not be fully over yet, and that foreign countries may have been involved in the attempt.

Meanwhile, Turkey has arrested two members of the country’s constitutional court along with 111 other judiciary officials. Erdogans’s chief aide-de-camp has also been formerly charged in relation to the coup.

The botched putsch began late on July 15, when a faction of the Turkish military blocked Istanbul’s iconic Bosphorus Bridge and strafed the headquarters of the Turkish intelligence agency and parliament in the capital.

Turkey began to go after those believed to have played a role in the abortive coup after the one-day attempt was declared over on July 16. Official estimates show that over 60,000 people, including senior government and judiciary officials and members of the army, have been sacked or dismissed from their jobs since then.

Obama, the first ever black president in US history, further stated that "Americans of all races and all backgrounds are rightly outraged by the inexcusable attacks on police, whether it's in Dallas or any place else."

The US president, who is cutting short his European trip on Sunday to visit the city of Dallas, also asserted that Americans are rightly troubled and enraged by the latest police killings of two more unarmed black men and about "the larger, persistent problem of African-Americans and Latinos being treated differently in our criminal justice system."
