British Council Operating Context
Current:

Nigeria is one of the largest economies in Africa. It is also the most populous country with over 180 million citizens. The UK is its largest trading partner. Nigeria holds significant political power in the region and internationally and its society retains a positive attitude to the UK.
Therefore, there continue to be major opportunities for the UK and BC to build on our strong existing relationships with the Nigerian government, institutions and customers/audiences. However, there are complex and substantial risks to this work i.e. security and compliance.
Nigeria is the British Council’s largest operation in sub-Saharan Africa with offices in 4 cities – Port Harcourt in the south, Kano in the north, Abuja the Federal capital and Lagos the commercial centre.
We also have a number of project offices across the country. Our 200 staff work across a range of states delivering large scale contracts, partnership programmes, examinations, projects as well as services in Arts, Education & Society and English & Exams.
We are already achieving substantial impact and income (current annual income is £27.2 million) and have plans to grow and develop our impact further.
Partners and clients include government, public and private institutions, foundations, private sector organisations and civil society. We work closely with the wider UK mission including DFID and UKTI.
Nigeria has the largest exams operations in SSA.
There are currently over 40 members in the exams team. Nigeria examinations work encompasses Schools exams via our partnership with Cambridge International Education (CIE), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), and a wide range of academic and professional qualifications. Last year, we delivered 90,000 exams on a turnover of £8.2m.
This financial year, there are growth targets to achieve income of £9.2m. Customer service, operational quality and compliance are critical to the business. Developing flexible and appropriate delivery models is vital in responding to the challenges working across the country.
For that I have a very specific recommendation Fake Soldier Who Stole Motorcycles, Arrested By Police In Lagos (Photo)
Future:

42% of Nigeria’s population is under 14. The government has recognised that its Vision 2020 must address the aspirations of this young population as part of its drive to achieve peace and prosperity. This has led to unprecedented interest and investment in Education, the Arts and good governance. This alignment with the UK’s priorities creates a growth environment for the British Council.
To be successful in this, we are building understanding with our UK stakeholders of Nigeria as an emerging economy with substantial commercial and development opportunities as well as the challenges they may be more familiar with. In this we seek to integrate our approach with that of the wider UK mission.
We are expanding and scaling up our existing programmes, contracts and services in the Arts, Education & Society, English& Examinations and developing offers to fill important gaps such as in Skills. We are also working to ensure that we have a good balance of partnership, customer services and client funded work across all these sectors.
To do all this we need to create the right enabling environment. In addition to developing the professional and technical expertise of our staff, we need to support them to build their relationships within Nigeria, the region and the wider global network.
This will ensure we develop as well as adopt and use best practice. We also need rigorous and compliant frameworks to support our work in areas such as finance, tax & status, security, procurement, compliance and quality management.
We have new premises in Kano and have a major premises project under development in Abuja. However, there is still more work to be done, especially in Lagos and Port Harcourt to ensure our premises and technology support our brand reputation for integrity, innovation and professionalism.

Romance / 7 Kinds Of Relationships That Might Never Lead To Marriage. by Joybabes: 7:11pm On Jul 04, 2017
7 KINDS OF RELATIONSHIPS THAT MIGHT NEVER LEAD TO MARRIAGE.

You know it’s of a truth that not every relationship one goes into would lead to marriage; most relationships would just fizzle out on the surface, why some would last for a while then comes to an end, with some even lasting a pretty long time but still won’t result to marriage. Most times, you might want to get married to your partner, but your partner wouldn’t want to get married to you and that’s another harsh reality. So, how do you know your relationship wouldn’t lead to marriage? What kind of relationships don’t lead to marriage?

1. DESPERATION OR SURVIVAL RELATIONSHIP

This kind of relationship, is type in which one partner is highly desperate for marriage. Such relationship might never lead to marriage because desperation isn’t a good quality. Being desperate would throw you in bad light, show your many flaws and could even make your partner feel edgy about getting married to you. Lot’s of desperate ladies end up not marrying their man.

2. THE SEX ONLY RELATIONSHIP

Lots of relationships out there can be referred to as the ‘s*x only’ kind of relationship. In such a relationship, s*x is the long-term and short-term goal of the relationship. A relationship that’s built solely around s*x might never lead to marriage

3. EXPERIMENTAL RELATIONSHIP

I term relationships that keep going back and forth as experimental relationships. Any relationship without stability might never lead to marriage; if all you and your partner do is breakup today and make-up the next day then it shows a sign of incompatibility or that you haven’t found solutions to your relationship problems. If such a relationship leads to marriage, it wouldn’t fare any better.

4. LIVING TOGETHER WITHOUT FUTURE GOALS

The fact that you are living together with your man is no guarantee that such cohabitation would lead to marriage. If there is no marriage in sight, or talks about it, or at least talks about the future or each other’s long-term goals then you might cohabit for a long time, and it would only end there.

5. VALIDATION RELATIONSHIP

This is the kind of relationship where one of the partners seeks other people’s responses and validation before approving to anything. Such a relationship has the feeling of insecurity around it and might never lead to marriage.

6. RELATIONSHIPS WITHOUT LONG-TERM GOALS

A relationship that’s built for the short-term would probably only last the short-term. In relationships that might lead to marriage, both partners (not one) have each other’s future in mind and care about the long-term future of the relationship. When you and your partner never discuss your long-term goals with each other and think about the relationship’s future then marriage might just be a dream that would never happen.

7. THE PASS TIME RELATIONSHIP

In this kind of relationship, it’s mostly about the s*x, the fun and the pleasure. Couples like this have fun in abundance; but deep down, they both have the feeling that it wouldn’t lead to marriage. Such a relationship lacks the commitment and seriousness to walk down the aisle.

Romance / This Is Three Stop Getting Hurt By Untrustworthy Men. by Joybabes: 8:00am On Jul 04, 2017
This is Three Stop Getting Hurt by Untrustworthy Men.
One of our biggest fears is giving our love to someone who betrays our trust.

It’s probably already happened to you. It happens to most of us over the course of a lifetime.

For some, the lesson is etched in memory. They never fully trust anyone again, not like they did before. They can’t bear the thought of going through that again.

Whether it was a divorce, a lie, an affair, or a broken promise, the people we love can betray us in a thousand different ways.

Some betrayals are like paper cuts that sting badly at the time but heal. Other betrayals cut us in half.

How can you keep yourself from being deceived, walked all over, or taken advantage of?

How can you stay safe when you give your heart away?

Here are some ideas.

1. Don’t give him your trust right away.

Falling in love sweeps you off your feet. When you’re in love, you’re in a different reality. Everything is beautiful; everything is right. Those rose-tinted glasses transform him from just another guy into your beloved, a knight and a hero among men.

But new love is a form of intoxication. Chemicals like dopamine, oxytocin, norepinephrine, and PEA cloud your senses. You can’t see your beloved clearly until the honeymoon period has worn off. Until then, you’ll only see the best in him.

Nature designed us that way for a reason. Ideally, the intense bond of new lovers keeps them together long enough to raise a child to toddlerhood and ensure the continuation of the species.

But these days we’re not as interested in passing on our genes as we are in finding a compatible mate. Those rose-colored glasses distort reality just enough that we can’t be confident that who we see is who our beloved really is.

There’s a simple remedy:

Allow for the distortion.

Recognize that you are seeing him at his best. You’re in love; that’s how it works! Don’t give him all your trust right away, no matter how passionate you feel. Take it slowly. Wait until your vision has cleared before trusting him with the big things.

You’ll know that you’re seeing him more realistically when you start to see his bad points as well as the good. He’s not perfect. You don’t think alike on everything. You’re going to argue sometimes.

The end of the honeymoon period can feel like a bucket of cold water dumped on your head, but that bucket of cold water also wakes you up. It’s a shock, but it’s necessary. You’ve got to see the truth about one another eventually.

In the harsh light of day, you’ll find that you can trust him on some things and not others. You can trust him to be faithful and care about you, but maybe not to balance his checkbook or pick up the right groceries. And that’s fair enough. Trust should be realistic.

2. Don’t trust a man more than he respects you.

Some men will challenge you:

“Why don’t you trust me? Don’t you love me? You must not love me if you’re not going to trust me on this.”

This argument sounds convincing. Of course, you love him. It makes sense that you should trust someone you love. Okay, then you’ll trust him on this, even though something feels off. No wonder something feels off.

He’s manipulating you. He’s using what you feel for him to get a free pass.

Loving someone and trusting that person are two different things. Just ask any parent. You can love your children to the moon and back, but you’re not going to trust them with matches or knives.

Trust needs to be matched to specific situations and a proven track record.

A man who respects you will understand that. He won’t pressure you into doing something you don’t want to do. He’ll understand that trust takes time.

In general, the more he respects you, the more you can trust him. The less he respects you, the less trust he deserves.

3. When you do trust, accept the risks.

Love is a risky proposition. No matter how careful you are, there’s always the chance of things going horribly wrong.

The moment you love someone else, you open yourself up to being hurt. You can’t know what the outcome will be.

And that’s not a bad thing.

The greatest achievements often require great risks. Failures, wrong turns, and despair litter the road to victory. You can’t escape being hurt if you’re going to open yourself up to love.

What you need to know is this:

No matter what happens, you can handle it.

Give yourself permission to get hurt. Accept the risks inherent in love. Trust yourself to be strong enough.

Because the trust you place in your own strength has a way of revealing your hidden reserves, your resourcefulness, and the new future that awaits you.

Oh, and one more thing. The best way to avoid getting burned is to have knowledge that allows you to predict the future. Knowledge is power precisely because it lets you predict things other people miss.

As a relationship coach, I spend a lot of time trying to predict what will happen next in relationships. Sometimes I’m right, sometimes I’m wrong. But there’s one secret I’ve discovered that gives me an unfair advantage.

It’s an advantage you can use too. It allows you to understand why men respond the way they do in romantic relationships. With that knowledge, you gain more than insight into the future. You’ll actually learn how to pull at a man’s heartstrings in a way he simply can’t resist.

Romance / 5 (FIVE) Mysteries Of The Male Brain. by Joybabes: 4:03pm On Jul 03, 2017
5 (FIVE) Mysteries of the Male Brain.
Male and female brains are different. Sometimes very different.

It all comes back to what happens in the womb. Before we’re even born, our brains begin to develop.

During this time, the male brain is powerfully influenced by the presence of testosterone.

Some men end up with a lot of very masculine tendencies, while others have fewer.Nonetheless, most guys think in fairly predictable ways.

If you’ve spent much time with a man who has a very masculine brain, you’ve likely noticed at least a couple of quirks.

But before I get to those, a word of caution.

While you might think of these as annoyances, it’s important to remember that his brain isn’t built like yours. When a guy exhibits one of these traits, he’s not being stubborn, rude or unsympathetic. He’s just using his brain the way it was made!

That said, here are five mysteries of the male brain that may leave you scratching your head:
He doesn’t notice things. You hang a holiday wreath on the front door. He walks in through that door. You ask him what he thinks of the new wreath and he has to walk back outside to look at it. He didn’t even see it on the way in!

He craves control. Even when you’re just watching TV together, it’s critical that he has possession of the remote. It’s like the experience is diminished if you’re holding it. What’s more, he may end up just flipping through channels in an unending quest to make sure he’s not missing something better.

He’s too solution-oriented. You come home after a hard day at work. He listens to you vent for a bit. Sensing that you’re anxious, but failing to understand that you really just want to share your feelings, he immediately starts trying to “solve the problem.” You want support, but he’s all about finding a solution.

He misses what you just said. You’re the only two people in the room. You say something. He misses it completely, even though he may have nodded or said, “Sure.” His attention was simply somewhere else.

He has a one-track mind. He can be so focused on the computer, the TV or a book that he gets irritated when you try to talk to him. You end up having to interrupt him several times just to be heard. And when you finally get his attention, he’s visibly annoyed.

Some of those scenarios are kind of funny. Some of them are down-right irritating. But I’m not sharing this list with you to pick on men.

Instead, I’m trying to call attention to the fact that men and women are fundamentally different in some ways. And some of those differences are what attract us to one another!

The yin and yang of human gender is what draws us together. When we learn to work with those differences instead of bucking against them, a beautiful balance is created.

Don’t beat your guy over the head for thinking like a man. Yes, he may hog the remote. He may miss something you literally just said. He may even fail to notice the new painting you hung in his apartment as an early Christmas present. But there’s one huge benefit.

If you understand how a man thinks, you can pull on his heartstrings like no other woman in his life.

As a dating and relationship coach, it’s my privilege to share with you one secret of the male mind that can addict him to you forever.

It’s a quirk of the male mind causes him to be obsessed with a particular need. I’m talking about a relationship need that makes him feel like a man. It’s something most men don’t even realize they want.

That’s okay, because in the short video presentation below, I can show you what he wants and how you can use his desire to draw him closer.

Sports / Transfer News!! Liverpool Set To Sell Defender Sakho For £20m (read) by Joybabes: 11:03am On Jul 03, 2017
Liverpool will demand £20m for defender Mamadou Sakho if he moves during the January transfer window.

Galatasaray and Sevilla have shown an interest in the 26-year-old, while Southampton are also considering a move after captain Jose Fonte asked to leave St Mary’s.

The France international signed a new long-term deal at Anfield in 2015.

But he has not played for the first team since April because of off-field issues.

Sakho was sent home from Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States by manager Jurgen Klopp as a disciplinary measure.

He was also handed a 30-day suspension by Uefa in April for testing positive for a prohibited substance following a Europa League tie against Manchester United the previous month.

Liverpool decided to make Sakho unavailable for selection while the disciplinary process was ongoing and he subsequently missed the Europa League final defeat by Sevilla in Basel.

Uefa failed to impose a further ban after Sakho’s defence team questioned whether the substance, understood to be a fat-burner, should have been on its prohibited list.

The central defender has made 56 league appearances in three years at Liverpool but is currently training with the under-23 squad.

Education / Federal University Of Technology (FUTA) by Joybabes: 8:58pm On Jun 30, 2017
Federal University of Technology (FUTA), Akure, FUTA has not increased fees for students. See more details below…
FUTA Didn’t Increase School Fees

The attention of the Federal University of Technology, Akure has been drawn to reports in some national newspapers claiming that fees payable by students have been increased to N83,340.00.

For the avoidance of doubt no such decision has been taken at any level in the University. The fees payable by students remain what they were before the erroneous report.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Fuwape has therefore urged students, parents the University community and other stakeholders to disregard the report. He has also assured the students that their welfare and well being remain one of the cardinal agenda of his administration

Sports / Cristiano Ronaldo To Leave Portugal Squad To Be With Newborn Children. by Joybabes: 12:04pm On Jun 29, 2017
Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Portugal squad to be with newborn children.

After Portugal's Confederations Cup loss, the Real Madrid star confirmed the arrival of two children overnight

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed he had become the father of two more children during the Confederations Cup.

Portugal were eliminated from the tournament on Wednesday, suffering a 3-0 penalty shoot-out loss to Chile after a 0-0 draw in Russia.

Ibra offers sneak peek of statue

Ronaldo was left disappointed by his side's exit, appearing to confirm the birth of his two boys and that he would miss the third place play-off on Sunday.

However, Portuguese media outlet SIC claim that he's had a son and a daughter, named Mateo and Eva.

"I was in the service of the national team, as always, body and soul, even though my two children were born," he wrote on Facebook.

"Unfortunately, we have not been able to achieve the main sporting objective that we wanted, but I am sure we will continue to give joy to the Portuguese.

Santos defends penalty order

"The president of the Portuguese Football Federation and the national team have today had an attitude that has touched me and I will not forget.

"I'm very happy to finally be with my children for the first time."

Ronaldo's first son, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr., turned seven earlier this month.

Health / Find Out How Vitamin C Can Be Used As A Treatment For Cancer by Joybabes: 6:52pm On Jun 28, 2017
FIND OUT HOW VITAMIN C CAN BE USED AS A TREATMENT FOR CANCER.
Vitamin C is good at helping you ward off colds, viruses, and… cancer? New research has not only confirmed the vitamin’s cancer-fighting abilities, but also figured out what makes high doses of vitamin C so dangerous for cancer cells, but harmless for healthy cells.

According to the new research, now published online in the journal Redox Biology, researchers from the University of Iowa found that vitamin C breaks down easily, creating hydrogen peroxide, a reactive oxygen species that causes damage to tissue and DNA.

However, according to the research, cancer cells are much less capable of removing this damaging hydrogen peroxide than normal healthy cells are. Consequently, the team believes that high doses of vitamin C administered intravenously could be effective at helping to fight off cancer when used alongside standard chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

“In this paper we demonstrate that cancer cells are much less efficient in removing hydrogen peroxide than normal cells.

Thus, cancer cells are much more prone to damage and death from a high amount of hydrogen peroxide,” says Garry Buettner, a professor of radiation oncology and a member of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa, and researcher involved in the project, in a recent statement. “This explains how the very, very high levels of vitamin C used in our clinical trials do not affect normal tissue, but can be damaging to tumor tissue.”

According to the study, high doses of vitamin C intravenously can bypass the stomach, which enables more of the nutrient to enter the bloodstream. Researchers plan to test the treatment on pancreatic and lung cancer patients, in combination with standard chemotherapy or radiation, to see if there is an improvement in outcomes.

This is not the first time scientists have recognized vitamin C’s cancer-fighting abilities. In 2015, a study published in Science found that vitamin C was also useful in treating mutated cancer cells in colorectal cancer patients that had been unresponsive to other treatment.

The team hope that one day, high doses of vitamin C may become a standard treatment for cancer, offering patients a safer and more effective way to battle their disease.
