Nairaland / General / How Nigeria Failed Mohbad by jr101(m): 8:21am On Sep 17, 2023
HOW NIGERIA FAILED MOHBAD

In a shocking turn of events, the untimely demise of one of the talented promising young musicians, Mohbad, at the tender age of 27 has raised serious questions about the state of security and protection for people in Nigeria. His hasty burial which was less than 24 hours after his death has left a cloud of mystery surrounding his passing. However, what has since come to light are the harrowing experiences he endured in the days leading up to his tragic end, shedding new light on the dark underbelly of the entertainment industry.

Mohbad whose musical talent was undeniable, found himself entangled in a web of threats, intimidation, and even outright assaults wherever he went. The question that looms large is why no one paid heed to his cries for help until it was too late.
The talented musician took to various social media platforms to share his grievances, pouring out his heart in desperate tweets and even penning a petition to the Nigerian Police Force. In this viral document, he detailed the relentless intimidation he faced allegedly at the hands of thugs associated with his former record label boss Naira Marley, with whom they had a bitter separation. Yet, his pleas for assistance went largely unanswered, leaving him to fend for himself in a hostile environment.

While i do not accuse anyone of Mohbad's death, it is imperative to address the disturbing incidents that occurred in the lead-up to his death. His story serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities artists can face in an industry known for its cutthroat competition and often murky dealings.

In the wake of Mohbad's tragic demise, there has been an outpour of video shreds of evidence and audio recordings that paint an unsettling picture of the torments he endured. This raises significant concerns about the efficiency and effectiveness of the security apparatus in Nigeria, particularly when it comes to safeguarding the lives and well-being of its citizens, including those in the entertainment industry.

Mohbad's death must not be in vain; it should serve as a wake-up call to all Nigerians and those in positions of authority to reevaluate the security measures in place to protect individuals from threats, harassment, and violence. The legacy of this talented promising young artist should not only be in his music but also in the much-needed changes that ensure the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their profession.

RIP IMOLE embarassed

Politics / Winners And Losers Of Nigeria's Presidential Election by jr101(m): 4:31am On Mar 01, 2023
THE WINNERS AND LOSERS OF NIGERIA'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

The 2023 presidential election took place on February 25th, 2023, and after 2 days of counting, the results have finally been announced with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) declared the winner with 8,794,726 votes. Former vice President Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party was able to garner a total of 6,984,520 votes, followed by Peter Obi of the Labour Party with 6,101,533 votes. As expected, the first and second runners-up rejected the elections even way before the collation was completed and the electoral body has urged them to approach the courts to seek redress. There have been minor reports of voter intimidation, suppression, and outright disenfranchisement in some parts of the country. And just like in every past election, all sides are pointing accusing fingers at each other. Let’s look at the winners and losers of this election.

WINNERS

Tinubu

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the flagbearer of the ruling party APC was seen by political experts as the frontrunner since he expressed interest in the top political job, and that never changed until the end. With reports of insecurity, widespread lack of electricity, and economic hardships people are facing in Nigeria today, it felt like it was a huge task for him. But Tinubu is widely regarded as one of the most astute politicians and as a kingmaker since he was instrumental in installing Buhari as president in 2019. He was seen by political experts as a frontrunner, and that never changed until the end. Tinubu was a subject of ridicule on social media with his gaffes trending on all platforms.
He may have lost the battle in his stronghold of Lagos state, but he ended up winning the war.

Buhari

I must commend President Muhammadu Buhari for the way he behaved during this election. There have been accusations from different quarters including from members of his party regarding plots to frustrate Tinubu’s chances. This was not helped by the ill-advised currency redesign that was carried out by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Buhari made it clear on several occasions not to interfere in the electoral process. Even when former president Olusegun Obasanjo called on him to halt the collation of the presidential election because his favored candidate Obi was losing, Buhari didn’t blink an eye. I think all politicians may have been hurt or benefited from President Buhari’s aloofness during his 8 years at the helm. That’s the most consistent thing about him. In addition to conducting this not-so-perfect election under his watch and signing the electoral act of 2022, I would like to congratulate him for its success. There was no massive involvement of law enforcement officers as was the norm in the past, especially under the administration of former president Obasanjo.

MIXED

Peter Obi

Peter Obi of the Labour Party may have lost the election, but he is a winner. There were low expectations, but the results proved that he is now a force to reckon with in national politics. In addition to galvanizing a new movement called the Obidients, he may have been able to influence the election of a few members to the National Assembly. It is still unclear what the control will be. Obi has confirmed what a lot of us have been saying. People of no region or tribe cannot demand the presidency be given to them like it's a dinner plate. They get into the ring and fight. Elections are about the strength of candidates and Obi has shown that, regardless of the party, a candidate can sell a party. I believe Obi has done a lot to show that he can compete with the big boys in the political game. This is because they don’t come bigger than Atiku and Tinubu on the Nigerian political scene. Obi got in and jabbed at the major players. He has earned my respect!

Obidients

Obidients are supporters of Labour Party candidate Peter Obi who coined the word from Obi’s last name. They have mobilized and organized from all walks of life. By using Twitter threads, tik tok videos, and memes, they have a large presence on social media. They gathered and encouraged a large number of new voters to vote for their party and it bore fruit nationwide. With the Labour party making inroads into PDP strongholds, especially in the southern parts of Nigeria. I applaud the movement and I hope they can continue to raise their voices in calling for better governance. In any event, it would be better if they were tolerant of other opinions. After all, that is what democracy is all about.

G5 Governors

G5 governors are all members of the People's Democratic Party of Nigeria (PDP) who refused to support their party’s presidential candidate. Even though they achieved their ultimate goal of truncating Atiku’s chances, some of them suffered losses in their quests to become senators or their anointed candidates were voted against. Seems to be a bittersweet experience for them.

LOSERS

Atiku

This is the third time he has participated in the general election as a presidential candidate. This is the third time he has lost the election. Only Atiku himself will decide if he is coming back or not. It is his inability to form a coalition with LP and NNPP and his inability to unite some sections of his People’s Democratic Party like the G5 governors. Only God knows what his next plan will be.

INEC

Another election year means a new set of INEC problems. We all know there is no flawless election in any part of the world. But despite a humongous budget, upgraded electoral materials, and BVAS, INEC still struggled with logistics. There were reports of late arrivals of election materials and officers in most parts of the country. As a matter of fact, most problems of this election can be attributed to INEC rather than any political malfeasance by the political parties involved.

Fake news

Fake news has always been a staple in the Nigerian polity, but it reached a crescendo on the day of the election. I have never seen anything like that before. There were a lot of people spreading falsehoods on social media, whether they were intending or not. Those falsehoods are passed along both wittingly and unwittingly, as long as they suit their preferences. They post videos with no clear evidence and just add a caption to cause outrage. I hope the government can do something about it because it seems to be getting out of hand.

FACTIONALISM AND POLITICS IN NIGERIA by Lanre Etti Jr

If we think corruption is the only ‘unifying’ factor in Nigeria, we should have a rethink, because Nigerians have appetite for another thing in common which is to factionalism. According to the Oxford dictionary, Faction is a group or clique within a larger group, party, government or organization.

Nigerians have now developed habit for factions in almost every sphere, and it mostly happens in the political circle. In fact, I have noticed this anomaly for a while, but for the split that happened recently to the ‘mighty’ People’s Democratic Party during their mini convention, where 7 Governors and some political heavy weights of the party, left the venue to set up ‘The New PDP’ at the Sheu Musa Yar’Adua Centre.

Going by the popular dictum, ‘united we stand, divided we fall’. Undoubtedly, no group of people can achieve anything significant without unity, particularly in politics, as political party implies the coming together of a group of people that share the same passion, ideologies, aspirations and inclinations to hijack the instrumentalities of power. But if politicians who are supposed to be united for the purpose of hijacking power allow rancor, selfish interests, acrimony or differences to enter their midst and cause distraction or derailment, the purpose of their political aspiration will automatically become futile and fruitless.

But who would have thought that the self-acclaimed largest political party in Africa would get a dose of its own medicine? The ruling party should not be surprised by this development; after all, they have been fanning the flame of divisions and promoting schism among their ranks. So it’s high time they got the taste of it.

After all, it is still fresh in our memory how President Goodluck Jonathan, to the surprise of all, openly aligned with Governor Jonah Jang’s faction after the disputed Nigeria Governor’s Forum election, in which Governor Rotimi Ameachi of Rivers State was the authentic winner. Besides that, there are many PDP state chapters that have been factionalized, owing to unresolved internal political crises, consequently leading to the disputes over election primaries, party standard bearer and other flimsy excuses.

These factions mostly come to life, when the people that are meant to resolve the disputes often take sides in an internal party affair, thereby promoting injustice and sowing the seeds of enmity and discord amongst members. And this usually leads to the pandemonium, chaos and breakdown of law and order in the society, like we saw recently in Rivers State House of Assembly.

Just of recent, President Jonathan sacked the Minister of Youth Development, Inuwa Abdulkadir, and for what reason? According to The Punch newspaper, Abdulkadir was axed for mishandling the National Youth Council of Nigeria’s elections in Makurdi and Minna which resulted in the factionalisation of the council. What a forgetful President! Has he forgotten the NGF election so quickly? He ignorantly and dangerously laid a bad precedent by welcoming the Jang faction to Aso Rock.

Although the PDP seems not the only party grappling with this endemic, but they appear to be the only party that breeds divisions by not putting their house in order. When we thought the last has been heard of the APGA controversy, then suddenly, two candidates emerged from two parallel primaries in Anambra state. The Maxi Okwu led version has selected Dr. Chike Obidigbo while the Chief Victor Umeh faction has chosen Chief Wiilie Obiano as their standard bearers. And this is a big headache for INEC in the 2014 gubernatorial election in Anambra State.

We must not be surprised if we later find out that former President Olusegun Obasanjo has a hand in the formation of The New PDP. Obasanjo is not new to politics of factionalisation, because for years, he had a running battle with Buruji Kashamu led faction over the control of Ogun State chapter of the PDP.

Like the adage, charity begins at home; the embattled PDP Chairman Bamanga Tukur, is dragging the control of Adamawa State chapter of the PDP with Governor Murtala Nyako. And also in Rivers State, a section of the State PDP is loyal to the Minister of State for Education Nyesom Wike, and they are doing everything possible to frustrate the Governor Ameachi’s faction out of the party. Unfortunately, the Rivers State saga has degenerated into a free for all- what a shame!

But my advice now is for those who call themselves elders in various political parties and organizations to make sure they lead by example, because this is becoming a bad trend in our society and it’s a threat to our social values as a people. It is as if people cannot come together while ignoring selfish interests, to forge an alliance in order to achieve set out goals.

Truly, having dissent voices in political parties is not new in our polity; it has been observed that politicians out of their insatiable maniac for power, self centeredness, and inordinate passion for public position, inexplicable arrogance, and sordid ambition cause their house to crack thereby allowing lizard to enter.

Taking a look at historical antecedents, it reveals how Nigerian politicians since the first republic have been allowing disunity and factionalisation to obstruct the progress of their party, and at the detriment of democracy, good governance, stability and tranquility of the country. One must not forget the ugly occurrence that happened in the Western region from 1963-1966, how disunity led to pandemonium and eventual collapse of Action Group (AG) led Western region government.

Sir Ladoke Akintola, who succeeded Chief Obafemi Awolowo in an attempt to sideline the leader of the party (Chief Awolowo) and the party manifesto, fanned the ember of discord among the honourable members of the Western Region House of Assembly. Some Honourable were of the belief that Akintola was wrong to pilot the affairs of the western region government, without displaying any loyalty to chief Awolowo who was the party national leader.

In an attempt for domination by both factions, the Governor of Western Region who was then the Ooni of Ife, was axed by Chief SL Akintola, the matter snowballed to legal battles, which transcended the borders of Nigeria and landed at the Privy Council and further culminated into the unforgettable and dreaded ‘operation wet i e’.

Likewise the second republic, UPN narrowly lost Ondo State because there was a faction in the party, one led by the Governor Chief Michael Ajasin and Chief Akin Omoboriowo.

In the events leading to the 2003 elections, The Alliance for Democracy (AD) crashed due to factionalisation between Senator Mojisola Akinfenwa and Chief Bisi Akande. As a result, AD was completely uprooted from power; the party woefully lost 5 out of 6 States leaving Lagos as the only AD controlled state in the South West. Indeed there is nothing to compare to unity.
So also, there was a time, when the pan-Yoruba socio cultural group Afenifere was split into two factions; there was the Afenifere proper and Afenifere Renewal Group.

Another political crisis is brewing in Taraba state where the sick Governor, Danbaba Suntai is deemed unfit to rule by a section of the State including 16 members of the State House of Assembly, have ‘advised’ him to go back to the United States for further treatment.
Hanging by the side is Alhaji Garba Umar confused as to the title which describes him most, being it Deputy or Acting Governor. And going by antecedents, one would not be surprised if it goes the normal Nigerian way of turning it to a constitutional crisis. By then I hope ‘The Doctrine of Necessity’ will be invoked to save the State of troubles.

As an advice of sort, political parties and other organizations should learn to utilize internal mechanisms to solve their disputes and avoid getting it to public domain. One cannot head to a battle field with a divided house, unless that entity does not crave success. Having factions in an already divided country like ours will spell doom in the near future if care is not taken.

If care is not taken to stem this tide, perhaps we could see the factionalisation of the Super Eagles, whereby there will be the normal team coached by Stephen Keshi and a parallel team headed by Daniel Amokachi. I pray it does not get to that.

Political parties should endeavor to remember the proverbial broomstick, that is useless when alone, but can sweep when in a bunch. Unity is what we need in Nigeria, Together, we can achieve more!

9JA RAPPERS BATTLE

Was it not Kendrick Lamar that released that controversial rap joint that shook the yankee rap world? He must release track for 9ja rappers o, but ... do we need him here? Hell No!

We gat Rukus, Godwon, Ice, Vector, Reminisce and many more. Rule of the game – no one should try to be a peacemaker here because rap without diss is dry, so let ‘em rappers burn themselves out lyrically, i mean LYRICALLY and not physically.

Big thanks to Notjustok.com for posting the list of the top 10 rappers in Nigeria. They helped us wake the slumbering rappers, (Sinzu sef enter studio cos of this). The list has created controversy in the rap industry simply because some rappers feel they were left out of the list for weaker rappers. Actually, we still have to ask Notjustok.com how they arrived at that list.

Lots of wrangling has been going on twitter, while the impatient ones hurried to the studio to bare their minds. (What a free world)

REACTIONS

Starting with Rukus’ track, yeah! He was able to get the rhymes right and choke the beat till it turned purple. I am sure this Rukus guy pressed P when he saw the top 10 list, because the way he took them one after the other is amazing, not even the Chairman was spared. But no one disses MI and goes scot free, Rukus can ask Ice Berg slim. And while trying to get at Vector, he compared Chidinma with Beyonce, but Rukus, why you go compare Broad Street with Wall Street.

Ice Prince’s tweets about Rukus on twitter speaks a lot about the ongoing riffs, Ice tweeted he was gonna promote Rukus for charity, what a generous rapper! I hope he hits the studio proper to put his voice on a Chopstix beat and reply the attack directed at him on Rukus’ freestyle.

Talking about a diss track with a chance of winning the best rap single this year Sinzu’s Exit Strategy is more than a diss track, sick beat, crazy bounce and sweet rhymes. (Hip Hop World please take note) Godwon seems to have hit a sleeping lion on the tail by releasing that diss track ‘Over analyze’, because sinzu lets the cat outta the bag concerning their past deeds. He went as far as telling us how Godwon left his 3 kids back in yankee, haba! (habatically)
Never seen this energy in Sinzu since the days of ye bari ba (sam bori bobo). and Sauce made use of his selling point, which is, blending LA flows with the naija style, and this worked out well. Perhaps, this is the comeback track for him. Still asking what is sinzu? E be like you dey madt since morning. Lol

And if Olamide or Reminisce decides to enter the battle, expect yam pepper scatter scatter, I sha hope some rappers will not pack their bags and head for their village because; baddo will surely take them to the cleaners and give them the diss of their lives.

To the boss on the list, Modey seems to have gotten to a stage where he feels he has turned to baba agba in naija rap industry, so we should not expect much from him except some well tailored advice from him, and he is gonna try to douse the tension, like I said – no peacemaker on this.

On his part, Vector was kinda matured with his response when he spoke with Dotun on Cool fm, Lanre be like he is focused on music business and he aint gat time for diss tracks. Don’t mind my name sake o, he is still gonna reply with some big grammar punch lines, VEC can’t let it go like that, NEVER!

However, expected scenario gonna be like, everybody will release their tracks directed at each other, but at the end of the day, some rappers will be left with bruised faces, while some gonna stand with their hands raised, like them Klitschko brothers in the ring. But the good thing is that the list made us know what some of them have been keeping to themselves for long. I guess they were looking for the opportunity and Notjustok handed it to them.
Please watch out for the concluding part of this write up because I am still expecting more tracks. Who say 9ja rappers still they rap like mumu?

My internet addiction began 5 years ago when I was in SS1. Back then my parents confiscated my phones and banned me from the family computer. I just laughed and bought new phones. Now they can only talk.

The worst thing you can do to me now is to take away the Internet. I spend over 20k a month on data.

20k! Ur sleep dey chop data? Haba...habatically

Celebrities / Re: Don-Jazzy On OJB - "Guys Do Not Wait For Celebrities Alone" by jr101(m): 10:29am On Jun 22, 2013
Sumtin dey happen for this 9ja oo. Its embarrassing for the music industry if a top music producer like OJB needs that amount of money, when our celebrities brandish wealth on d internet on a daily basis. We are not saying one person should pay everything, these guyz can form a committee within themselves and help him. The industry was not as lucrative as it is today when Steve Kadiri got help for same problem. This matter should ve been settled before it got to blogosphere. I wish OJB well embarassed

Politics / Re: Reuben Abati On Dame Patience In 2010 by jr101(m): 10:50am On Jun 12, 2013
Oh Abati! I dont really blame the man, i just pity him, d highest he can stay in aso rock is 8years, then he is coming back to meet us. He should know that Nigerians dont forget tinx easily, where is Aondooaka today, d former AGF that said yar adua can rule from anywhere in the world. People like him dont know d extent of the damage to their personality. Where is Femi Fani Kayode today

I know that d first thing he will do after leaving his job will be to release a book or memoir narrating his experience, just like Segun Adeniyi. I hope he will not be an accidental public spokesman (apologies to el rufai)
Phones / Re: Samsung S3 vs Tecno Phantom A (f7) by jr101(m): 12:09pm On Jun 08, 2013
For a society like ours, quality and affordable phones like tecno should be the trend , i will go for tecno , beacuse it will give me almost the same features a samsung will, afterall they are both running on android os, the problem with Nigerians is that we buy all these expensivet phones for effizy and show offs, most people dont need them, they go broke broke trying to look rich. I sold my blackberry curve 4 to buy tecno n7 and believe me, tecno has been a wonderful experience, sometimes i regret ever using a blackberry. My advice is this: if you have spare money to throw around, buy samsung, but if you are the type that spends wisely, Tecno is d bomb. Cant wait to get my tecno phantom *winks

BroS, itz clear that you love dis babe, I wunt advise you to break up with her now, but try n talk sense into her and make her See reason why she has to be faithful, but if it proves abortive, then show her the exit door. That means A leopard cannot change its skin
