Culture / Igbos And Hausas Agree To Work For Peace by justino57(m): 6:28pm On Sep 06, 2016
– Igbos and Hausas have come together in Kaduna to promote peace

– The communities agreed to work with security operatives and provide useful information

– The two groups met earlier when their was a rumour that the Igbo community will be attacked

In this period when Nigeria has recorded ethnic tension, the Hausa and Igbo communities in Jema’a local government area of Kaduna state have decided to come together to fight vice and crime in the region.

Vanguard reports that the communities made the decision on Monday, September 5 to partner with security agencies to wipe crime out

The decision was reached at a joint meeting of the two communities held at the Igbo community town hall in Kafanchan.

Alhaji Kabir Kasim who is the Deputy Chief Imam of Jema’a was the chairman of the meeting.

He said it was the responsibility of everyone to support security agencies and promised that other tribes will be included in Kafanchan to achieve maximum success.

He noted that this will promote peace as it was important to rid crime out of the community.

Mr Martin Okoli who is the president of the Igbo community in Kafanchan advised residents to be law abiding.

He also advised them to “inform security agencies of suspicious movements, by any individual or group, capable of threatening existing peace in the area.”

Chief Chibuze Akpu who is the representative of the Igbo community in Fantswan chiefdom advised youths to abstain from acts that will tarnish their image.

A similar meeting was held by the Igbo and Hausa communities in August, after rumours of a planned attack on the Igbo community in the area.

Meanwhile, the UN has described Nigeria as a “divided society on the basis of the plurality of ethnic, religious and regional identities that had tended to define the country’s political existence.”

This was made known to the public during a consultative meeting on the formulation of the UN Development Assistance Framework IV (UNDAF IV) for the South-East geo-political zone in Awka.
The report noted that for decades, different segments of Nigeria’s population had, at different times, expressed feelings of marginalisation, of being short-changed, dominated, oppressed, threatened, or even targeted for elimination.
The report also painted a gloomy picture for the country as most of the development and social indices in Nigeria recorded much below acceptable standards.
It noted that the major challenges facing Nigeria were constraints of economic growth and social development and lack of good governance.

Sports / 5 Reasons Nigeria Failed To Qualify For AFCON 2017 by justino57(m): 10:12am On Sep 05, 2016
The Super Eagles 1-0 win over the Tanzianian national team counted for nothing as Nigeria had already failed to qualify for the Nations Cup.

For the second consecutive time the 2013 African Champions will not be featuring in the competiton as the team have known their fate before their last match.

As brilliant as the team may look, the win became academical because the victory did not change the complexion of things for the green and white nation.

Certain internal issues cost the Super Eagles a place in Africa’s football fiesta as they look ahead to the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers which starts in October.

Here are the five reasons Nigeria did not qualify for AFCON 2017

1. The NFF: The Nigeria Football Federation have not been having good times as an administrative body as the house is divided against itself which has filtered down to Super Eagles performance on the field.

The NFF have been involved in power tussle
The glass house have virtually owed all the local coaches employed and have also been involved in leadership tussle between the heavy weights of the game which does not speak well of the country.

2. Sunday Oliseh: On paper the former Super Eagles coach had all it takes to handle any football team but Oliseh failed to replicate the best Super Eagles side, a team he was part of under the leadership of Clemens Westerhof.

Nigeria never played attractive football under the tutelage of the former captain which followed the early retirement of Vincent Enyeama and Emmanuel Eminike revealing that there was more to come in the days ahead.

Oliseh was part of the best Super eagles squad ever in 1994
The first two matches against Chad and Tanzania did not reflect the quality fielded by late Keshi as the team struggled to get four out of six points

3. Choice of stadium: Vincent Enyeama was the first to speak about the state of the Sani Abacha Stadium where the conditions of the pitch was not up to what most the stars played on.

The lush-green pitch at the Godawill Akpabio stadium
The match against Egypt was not comfortable for the players as they were cautious of picking up injuries compared to the state of the art Goodswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo where there were free flowing moves against the Tanzanians.

4. Chad’s Withdrawal: Another factor that broke the camel’s back for Nigeria was Chad’s inability to continue in the qualifying round owing to funds.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) only allowed one slot in the group which gave the Egyptians the upper hand to get the only spot for the three-team group.

Sunday Oliseh’s Super Eagles
As at the period of the announcement, Nigerian have not played Egypt and had four points from two matches while Egypt had two out of six.

5. Squad Rotation: The Super Eagles squad were rotated at different times which reflected in the poor strings of results as the team lacked continuity in development.
Politics / Tension As Northern Leader Calls For Protest Against Buhari by justino57(m): 10:02am On Sep 05, 2016
Northern leader, Balarabe Musa says Nigerians should protect themselves because the Buhari-led- administration is playing with their lives

– Balarabe says the hunger in land is enough to cause a revolt and he believes Nigerians should protest against the hardship because their lives are at risk

Balarabe Musa says Nigerians should protest against Buhari
Northern leader and national chairman of Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), Balarabe Musa has told Nigerians to protest against President Buhari’s administration.

Daily Post quoted Balarabe as telling The Sun in an interview that hunger is a powerful tool in instigating protests and since the current administration has failed in ensuring food security, then Nigerians have a right protect their interests
He however admitted that this could have dire consequences for the Buhari-led administration.

He said: “Well, they should protest. I know that it is a risk because security men may shoot them. However, they should protest because this is their life. Somebody is playing with their lives, somebody is destroying their lives, they should defend their lives and protect their interest.

“Before the last general election, many Nigerians saw Buhari as an angel who could rescue the country from socio-economic problems but Nigerians are now saying that they misjudged, and Nigerians should in future make sure that they access any prospective leader critically, taking into account his records, his inclination and everything, particularly records of performance in office.

“Nigerians are not different from the rest of human kinds; they are not different from the rest of the people in the world. Whatever people did in the world to protect themselves or show their anger against bad government, Nigerians can do it, and nobody should deceive himself that Nigerians are so docile, that they will not revolt. Anger pushes anybody to the limit.”
According to him, “The idea of government asking Nigerians to be patient can only be sustained in a situation whereby people see hope and changes. But where people don’t see changes, where they don’t see the basis for expecting changes, and they suffer continuously, appealing to them to be patient i may befutile.

“There is hunger in the land and Nigerians are dying of hunger. I dare to warn the President and everybody that can listen, that history has proved that mass hunger, hunger of the population, mass poverty of the population, killer hunger have always been the most immediate cause of proletarian revolution in every country of the world. And the President should know this; let him not be deceived by those who are benefitting from the current situation of hunger.”

Meanwhile, Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi-West Senatorial District has called on President Buhari to take drastic measures on the ailing economy, including the immediate sack of the minister of finance, Kemi Adeosun, minister of budget and national planning, Senator Udo Udoma and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele.

Melaye, in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, September 4, said the president must shake up his cabinet and accused some members of cabinet as lacking the capacity to deliver on the mandates of their ministries and agencies.

A 21-year-old girl has committed suicide after a video of her masturbating with a big sized Fanta bottle went viral on Facebook.
Livemonitor reports that the young lady (name withheld), recorded herself while masturbating with the big Fanta bottle. After the act, she decided to send the video for fun to her very close friend via WhatsApp but she mistakenly sent it to her ex-boyfriend whose name is the same as that of her closest friend. The ex-boyfriend quickly posted the embarrassing 4-minute video on Facebook.
According to the deceased’s boyfriend, the girl was shocked to learn that the video had gone viral on Facebook after one of her friends alerted her to search a certain Facebook group where the video was being circulated.
”She called me in the wee hours of Wednesday and I could feel that she was emotionally charged as I also knew that she was someone who was not talkative ”, said her friend, who only identified herself as Zodwa.
The ex-boyfriend is said to be on the run since the relatives of the deceased are baying for his blood. Efforts to get a comment from the deceased’s parents were fruitless as they flatly denied commenting on the saga, citing that they are still mourning their loved one.

Crime / BUSTED!!! EFCC Finally Locates N13.5b In Private Account From Halliburton Scanda by justino57(m): 7:15pm On Sep 01, 2016
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered how $32.5million of about $200million fines from Halliburton Energy Services was allegedly paid into a private account.
The money was said to be missing because it could not be ascertained whether or not it was remitted into the Federal Government’s account.
Consequently, a top shot with Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Roland Ewubare, who was one of the lawyers involved in the Settlement Agreement with Halliburton, has been given up to September 15 to submit a letter authorising him by the Federal Government to open the private escrow account.
Ewubare told EFCC that as the then Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), he acted in national interest in opening the escrow account.
He is in the United States to retrieve the relevant documents relating to the account for the EFCC.
The EFCC has grilled the Managing Director of Halliburton Energy Services in Nigeria, Henry Oki.
Oki gave the details of how agreements were signed between the Federal Government and Halliburton in London.
About five companies have paid fines in line with a Settlement Agreement with the Federal Government .
The breakdown of the remittances by the five companies is as follows: Julius Berger ($35m); Siemens (Euros 30m); Snamprogetti ($30m); Halliburton Energy Services ($32,500,000); and Japan Gasoline Corporation ($26, 500,000).
Top Nigerian lawyers who oversaw the agreement are a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Joseph B Daudu (SAN), Mr. E.C Ukala (SAN) Chief Godwin Obla (SAN), Mr. Roland Ewubare and Damian Dodo (SAN).
Some members of the legal team were conferred with national honours for the recovery.
EFCC detectives have discovered that the missing $32.5million was transferred by Halliburton into FGN JP Morgan Chase New York Swift BIC Code CHASUS 33, Account No. 000742501406865.
It was gathered that the account was titled Madison Avenue/ Escrow /CBN/ FGN further Credit to FGN Litigation Settlement.
EFCC team discovered that although the account was opened in the name of Federal Government, it was a purely private account which was managed by Ewubare and others as signatories.
A source told The Nation: “Out of over $200million fines paid, about $32.5m (N13,585,000,000) is missing. Our team succeeded in tracing the transfer of the cash into an account in New York but there is no record of whether or not it was remitted into the Federal Government Consolidated Account.
“We have raised issues on why the money was paid into a private account which led to the deduction of about 3.5% for some services.
“When we confronted a top official of NNPC, Roland Ewubare(who was at the time of the agreement the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission), he said $20million out of the $32.5million was remitted into the Federal Government account. We are yet to confirm this transfer because there are no records.
“We have given Ewubare up till September 15 to produce a letter from the Federal Government authorizing the payment of the $32.5million into a private escrow account and other documents relating to transactions in the account including the agreement on deduction of 3.5% for services out of the sum.
“As I speak with you, Ewubare is in the United States to retrieve all these relevant documents. He told us that he acted in the interest of the country and he has nothing to hide. But we need these documents from him.”
Responding to a question, the source said: “We have confirmed that other fines by Julius Berger ($35m); Siemens (Euros 30m); Snamprogetti($30m); and Japan Gasoline Corporation($26, 500,000) were paid into the Federal Government Consolidated Revenue Account.
“But we have issues with Halliburton Energy Services($32,500,000). As a matter of fact, Halliburton rejected the first account given to it before the private account was provided as an alternative.”
In his testimony, Ewubare defended the transparency of the open
Education / 8 Reasons Why University Lecturers Must Go On Strike by justino57(m): 6:37pm On Sep 01, 2016
On Tuesday, August 30, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) issued a warning to the federal government on a planned nationwide strike.

ASUU
The union said the warning for the strike is a push for its demand for the implementation of it 2009 agreement with the Nigerian government.

Also, during a meeting with journalists in Abuja on July 18, the ASUU president Biodun Ogunyemi listed major issues the federal government is yet to honour in the agreement.

Ogunyemi had said: “Comrades and compatriots, our union is seriously worried about a number of issues emanating from the 2009 agreement and subsequently, the 2013 memorandum of understanding with the federal government which have remained unaddressed.”
eight of the major issues and demand made by ASUU.

These demands, the federal government of Nigeria is yet to honour might as well lead to another prolonged strike by university lecturers.

Below are the issues:

1. Earned academic allowances (EAA):

In efforts to resolve the June/ November crisis in 2013 between FG and ASUU, the Nigerian government through an Agreement Implementation Committee promised the union a payment of an outstanding balance of N128.25 billion ( N65.83 billion between 2009 and 2013, and N62.41 between 2014 and 2016).

However, the union has said that the government has not paid “a kobo” beyond an initial N30 billion it paid university staff as part of EAA in 2013 – a clear breach of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties.

2. Funding of Universities:

The union said based on the FGN-ASUU MoU of November 2013, the Nigerian government was in arrears of N495 billion as at first quarter of 2016 in respect to the Needs Assessment Funds for the Revitalization of Public Universities.

“As at that moment, all Nigerian universities were in a state of serious funding crisis, which is becoming worse,” Ogunyemi had said.

Graduating students of Lagos State University
He also said that as at then almost all public universities had started experiencing reduction in their personnel cost.

The FG in the MoU promised to gradually work towards 26% budgetary allocation recommended by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
This promise is yet to be fulfilled rather budgetary allocation to education has dropped from 12% to 11% and the 8% in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

3. Staff salaries:

Contrary to the provisions of the FGN-ASUU agreement, the federal government is yet to address the issue of salaries – shortfall in university lecturers’ salaries and non-payment of salaries in staff primary schools since December 2015.

FG in its promise said it will address the salary issues with regards to the passage of the budget; this is yet to be fulfilled.

4. Antics of the state governments:

Also, ASUU while decrying the under funding of Nigerian public universities said the state-owned universities have become worse over the years.

Ogunyemi had said: “State governments have been neglecting universities that they established; and some state governors are going ahead to establish new ones while those brought to life by their predecessors in office are neglected to rot and die.

“Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Igwoye and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho have not received subvention from the owner governments for upward of nine months,” he had said.

Ogunyemi also said that academics at the Niger Delta University are owned nothing less than five months salaries.

He said the union will not hesitate to defend the rights of citizens to the right to education guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.

5. TSA and University Autonomy:

Politics / Buhari Orders Lagos-kano Rail Line To Pass Through Ekiti by justino57(m): 6:23pm On Sep 01, 2016
– President Muhamamdu Buhari has ordered experts redraw the Lagos to Kano rail line so that it can pass through Ekiti state
– The president stated this during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, August 31
President Muhamamdu Buhari has ordered experts who presented Lagos to Kano rail line plan to redraw the line so that it can pass through Ekiti state.
The president stated this during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, August 31 , through his special adviser on political matters, Senator Babafemi Ogudu in a release titled: “President Buhari, Ekiti And The Proposed Lagos To Kano Rail Line ”.
He said: “Something remarkable happened at the Federal Executive Council ( FEC ) today. The experts working on the proposed rail line running from Lagos to Kano came to present their master plan. The president gave full attention as they narrated how the line will go through OGUN, Oyo , Osin , Kwara , Kogi etc .
“The lines meandered and avoided Ekiti. After they were through the President called the experts back to the map and asked them why they avoided Ekiti. They had no convincing explanation . He firmly told them to go and redraw the line to pass through Ekiti.
“It is a mark of a man with a large heart. A different being would have done otherwise considering what the Ekiti governor has done to the President and his family. Generations of Ekiti indigenes will be grateful to Mr President for this act of magnanimity.”
Meanwhile, on Monday, August 29, a Chinese company stated that its directors had gotten a provisional letter of award from the Nigerian government on constructing a light rail system valued at $1.851billion to be built in Kanostate.
It is learnt that rail will have a full stretch of 74.3 kilometres and is expected to travel at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour.

Foreign Affairs / North Korea Leader Executes Official For Dozing Off In Meeting by justino57(m): 10:30pm On Aug 31, 2016
North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un has allegedly executed two top officials for disobeying him.

The JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reports that former agriculture minister Hwang Min and Ri Yong Jin, a senior official at the education ministry, were executed using anti-aircraft guns.

A source suggested that Ri Yong Jin was executed after he ‘dozed off during a meeting presided over by Kim’.

‘He was arrested on site and intensively questioned by the state security ministry. He was executed after other charges, such as corruption, were found during the probe.’

‘I understand he was executed because policy proposals he had pushed for were seen as a direct challenge to the Kim Jong-Un leadership,’ the source added.

It is believed they were executed earlier this month, and this is the latest in a series of high-level purges under the young leader’s rule.

The executions, which were reportedly carried out at a military academy in the capital, Pyongyang, are part of a “new reign of terror” sparked by “a series of defections by senior officials that has rekindled talk of instability and disunity among the North Korea elite”.

Kim took power in 2011 after the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, and his consolidation of power has included purges and executions of top officials, South Korean officials have said.

Hyun Yong Chol, a former defense minister, was executed last year for treason, according to the South’s spy agency.

North Korean state media described Hwang, one of the officials named, as agriculture minister in 2012, and referred to him as a vice minister of agriculture in 2014.

In statement sent to the spokesperson for the group Powerful Emma said reports on an emergence of splinter groups from IPOB is a move by the federal government and the Department State Services (DSS) to deceive the general public.

Emma said: “The indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) worldwide under the leadership of the prophet of our time mazi Nnamdi Kanu lambast the DSS and FG over the new formed group called TRIPOB and RIPOB on their moves to deceive the general public, it’s unfortunate that government cannot tell their citizens the simple truth.”

“We advise the FG and DSS, to release our leader and do better for the public to honour them. Their very poorly scripted plots always exposes the I.Q Level of the people incharge there.
We urge the general public to disregard the garbage from Nigeria government and the DSS. We are hoping to hear more of your newly formed IPOB which is no where to be found.

“Nigerians were waiting for this joke. They tried it on Avengers, now the great IPOB, tomorrow the DSS will form the Reformed Afenifere or the Reformed Egbesu and Ohaneze Ndigbo,” IPOB said.

Since the past week, there have been reports of that the IPOB group led by Nnamdi Kanu had split.

The reports said that the new groups – the Reformed Indigenous People of Biafra (RE-IPOB) and The Rebranded Indigenous People of Biafra (TRIPOB) – also threatened to expose the sponsors of the IPOB.

Sports / Uefa Announces Top Four Leagues To Get Four Guaranteed Champions League Spots by justino57(m): 11:17am On Aug 26, 2016
European football's governing body has confirmed teams from Spain, Germany, England and Italy will no longer have teams in the qualifying rounds of the elite club tournament

The top four ranked UEFA associations will receive four automatic Champions League group stage slots from 2018-19.

Currently occupied by the associations of Spain, England, Germany and Italy, teams from those countries will bypass the qualification phase during the UEFA competition cycle 2018-2021.

Teams from associations ranked five and six in the UEFA associations coefficient list will each receive two automatic group stage places with another team entering the qualification phase.

The Europa League winners will receive a guaranteed Champions League group stage slot as part of the changes announced by the European governing body’s ad interim general secretary Theodore Theodoridis on Friday.

As part of the new measures, there will be new UEFA club association coefficient system with up to 20 per cent of a club’s coefficient number being made up from historic titles.

The Champions Path – initiated by Michel Platini in 2009 – will be protected while plans for a wildcard entry never materialised.

UEFA has also announced plans to significantly increase financial distribution in the Champions League and its sister Europa League with an eye on closing the gap with the riches on offer in England’s Premier League. A new four-pillar financial distribution system - based on starting fee, performance in the competition, individual club coefficient and market pool - will see sporting performances better rewarded, while market pool share will decrease from 40 per cent to 15 per cent.

Delegates from UEFA and their European Club Association (ECA) counterparts spent Thursday locked in negotiations in Monaco before hammering out an agreement.

The ECA – representing the top clubs in Europe and led by Bayern Munich’s Karl-Heinz Rummenigge – had made veiled threats earlier in 2016 about forming a breakaway Super League. That possibility would appear to be off the table.

A new subsidiary company will also be created to play a strategic role in determining the future and the management of club competitions - UEFA Club Competitions SA - in which 50 per cent of managing directors will be appointed by UEFA and the other half by the ECA.

The plans are expected to be finalised in time for December’s UEFA's Executive Committee meeting.

Speaking about the amendments, Theodoridis said: "The evolution of UEFA's club competitions is the result of a wide-ranging consultative process involving all stakeholders and taking into account a wide range of expertise and perspectives.

"The amendments made will continue to ensure qualification based on sporting merit, and the right of all associations and their clubs to compete in Europe's elite club competitions.

"We are happy that European football remains united behind the concepts of solidarity, fair competition, fair distribution and good governance."
