Court remands businessman for defiling 8-year-old girl in Kaduna
The Kafanchan Upper Customary Court in Kaduna State, on Tuesday, April 30, remanded a 32-year-old businessman, Raphael Moses, in prison custody for allegedly defiling an eight/year-old girl.

The judge, Michael Bawa, who did not take Mr Moses’ plea, ordered that the case file be sent to the director of public prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

He then adjourned the case until May 19 for DPP advice.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) had charged the defendant with defilement.

The NSCDC prosecutor, Marcus Audu, told the court that the girl’s mother, Catherine Denis, reported the case at the Corp’s office in Kafanchan on April 22.

Mr Audu said the accused lured the girl to his room and defiled her.

He said Mr Moses was caught by some neighbours, who took the complainant to the Salama Sexual Assault Referral Centre.

Mr Audu said the offence contravened section 259 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

Nigerian Army troops arrest human trafficker in Lagos as 22-year-old victim escapes after she overheard plan to transport her to Libya

Troops of 65 Bn Nigerian Army (NA) operating under the 81 Division NA, have successfully apprehended a human trafficker, Mrs. Olushola Areke, in Lagos after her victim escaped from captivity.


Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, 81 Division Nigerian Army, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday, April 29, 2024, said Areke was arrested in connection with human trafficking following actionable intelligence.


According to the statement, the parents of the 22-year-old victim, Miss Fayoke Kunle, entrusted her to the suspect, who had promised to secure employment for her in Oshodi, Lagos.


However, the suspect moved Fayoke to Kano State with the intent to transport her to Libya.

“The suspect was accused of kidnapping Miss Fayoke Kunle, a 22-year-old daughter of Mrs Ainor Kunle. Mrs Kunle claimed she had voluntarily entrusted her daughter to the suspect, who had promised to secure employment for the young girl in Oshodi, Lagos,” the statement read.

"However, instead of heading to Oshodi as promised, the suspect moved Miss Kunle to Kano, where the victim later discovered herself and overheard discussions about being transported to Libya

"Miss Kunle courageously escaped from her captor and returned home on 23 April 2024.

"In response to this alarming report, troops reached out to Mrs Areke and was subsequently arrested at the designated meeting point, where she intended to pick up her supposed other victims.

"Both the suspect and the victim have been handed over to the Ajah Police Command in Lagos for further investigation.

"The Division wishes to urge members of the public to continue to support the NA in providing timely information to aid in maintaining law and order.

“The NA remains committed to promoting peace and stability across the Division Area of Responsibility.”

Man dies after jumping into Lagos lagoon while being chased by a mob for allegedly stealing bags of cement


A man identified simply as Azeez has been confirmed dead after reportedly jumping into Lagos lagoon while being chased by a mob for allegedly stealing bags of cement.

The Director in charge of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said he arrived at the scene of the incident to see the lifeless body of the deceased who drowned.

His corpse has now been evacuated and deposited at the Mainland General Hospital mortuary in Yaba.

A statement released by the police read;

ON 26/04/2024 AT ABOUT 1220HRS THE DIRECTOR IN CHARGE OF LASEMA OPERATION IN LAGOS CENTRAL REPORTED THAT AT ABOUT 1045HRS OF DATE, HE RECEIVED A CALL THAT THERE WAS AN INCIDENT AT LEKKI/IKOYI LINK BRIDGE. ON GETTING THERE HE MET A LARGE CROWD GATHERED BY THE WATER SIDE, WATCHING THE LIFELESS BODY OF A MAN WHO HAD DROWNED, WHO WAS LATER IDENTIFIED AS AZEEZ 'M'. HE WAS LATER CONFIRMED DEAD BY PARAMEDICS OF PRE HOSPITAL CARE LAGOS. EFCC taskforce arrests 34 suspected currency speculators in Abuja

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attached to the Taskforce on Currency Mutilation, Dollarization of the Economy and Forex Malpractice, have arrested 34 suspected currency speculators for alleged foreign exchange fraud.


They were arrested on Friday, April 26, 2024, in a sting operation following credible intelligence about illegal sales of dollars at the Wuse Zone 4 area of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.


The suspects are :Usman Mohammed, Abdullahi Nasir, Abubakar Saleh, Mohammed Kabir Ibrahim, Abubakar Ghadafi, Muktar Usman, Umar Abubakar Abba, Yakubu Sani, Aminu Abubakar, Muhammed Suleman Abara, Yusuf Tahir, Usman Lawal, Usman Lawal, Usman Umar, Amina Garba Rola, Muhammed Aliyu, Murtala Haruna, Sani Mohammed, Umar Farouk, Muhammed Sagiuru, Aminu Salisu, Lawal Bello, Munzali Hashim, Jamilu Suleiman, Mustapha Umar, Mubarak Tanimu, Adamu Garba, Mohammed Usman, Bello Musa, Saleh Mohammed Naseer, Zaharadeen Yau, Musa Umaru Adamu, Usman Machido and Abdulaziz Abubakar Abba.


Their arrest came on the heels of the EFCC's consistent efforts to sanitise and stabilise the foreign exchange market.


They will soon be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Three dead, several trapped as building collapses in Kano




Three
people have died while several others are trapped under the rubble after a building collapsed in Kuntau, in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State.

The incident occurred on Friday, April 26, 2024.

Rescue operations are currently ongoing while some corpses have been recovered.

Emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the State Fire Service have been on the scene working to rescue those trapped.

Two persons were rescued and have been rushed to the hospital by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Dataleum, a data analytics company, announced the rankings of Nigeria’s top content creation talents on its website on Wednesday.

In the rankings, Kie Kie secured the top spot among female skit makers, surpassing Jadrolita in second place, Taooma in third, Phoebe in fourth, and Neekahs Luxury Beads in fifth place.

Dataleum says the skit makers were selected based on the number of skits posted, views, likes, and followers.

An eight-year-old girl has been left with swollen eyes and hands after she was assaulted by her aunt.



Activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, shared a horrific video of the battered minor and stated that she is currently receiving treatment in a hospital in Lagos. He wrote

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspect over his alleged involvement in the murder of a 25-year-old man, Temitope Olorunfemi, who was lynched in Akure after being accused of being a ‘Yahoo boy.’




Recall that an angry mob on Monday April 10, 2023, stoned Tope to death, when his alleged reckless driving caused an accident that left one person dead and six others injured.



After killing Temitope, his car, a Toyota Camry (muscle), was also set ablaze by the irate mob in the presence of his wailing parents.



The deceased father, Mojisola Olorunfemi, and his wife, Mosunmola Bosede, denied that he was a fraudster.



According to the women, the deceased was an Uber driver who came to visit them for the Easter festivity.



Five suspects were arrested and subsequently arraigned for their involvement in the murder.



Spokesperson of the command, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, who confirmed the latest development on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, said the suspect claimed to have found some fetish items inside Temitope's car, raising suspicion that he was a Yahoo boy.



The mob was said to have been angered by the claims and descended on Temitope, beat him to a point of comatose before stoning him to death.



“On the 10th April 2023, (Easter Monday) a young man was involved in a fatal motor accident along Ijoka road , Akure. He was labelled ‘ a yahoo boy’ and killed by an irate mob. The suspect who claimed to have seen “Ijapa Meta” and other fetish objects in his car has been arrested. Do not say what you can’t defend,” the statement read.

NAFDAC raids supermarkets and markets in Abuja, seizes counterfeit products worth ₦50 million

Officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Control NAFDAC recently carried out raids on popular supermarkets in the Wuse 2 and Gwarinpa area of Abuja, uncovering counterfeit products on display. The enforcement team also targeted markets in Garki, Wuse, Utako, Kugbo, Nyanya and Mararaba, seizing counterfeit cosmetics and drugs.

A statement from the agency says during the operation, counterfeit cosmetics were discovered and seized at Sahad Stores, H-Medix and various markets while fake drugs were confiscated at the Utako market. Counterfeit NIVEA products, cosmetics, Jik bleach, Harpic toilet cleaner, and Airwick room freshener were all confiscated. The total value of the seized goods amounted to ₦50 million, with fake NIVEA products alone valued at ₦45 million.

Embugushiki-Musa Godiya, Head of Investigation and Enforcement/Federal Taskforce, FCT, Abuja, expressed concern over the sale of substandard products, particularly counterfeit NIVEA cream which was being sold at higher prices than the approved products. He emphasised the health risks posed by such counterfeit goods, including the potential for cancer, kidney damage, and skin rashes.

NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out counterfeit syndicates and safeguarding the public health.

The Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has withdrawn all police officers attached to the embattled former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

The order for the withdrawal was contained in a police wireless message. The document with reference number: “CB:4001/DOPS/PMF/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.48/ 34 reads in part;

“IG has ordered the withdrawal of all policemen attached to His Excellency and former Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello. Acknowledge compliance and treat with utmost importance. Please, above, for your information and strict compliance.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Immigration Service has placed the former governor on its watchlist. This comes after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday, April 18, declared him wanted in connection to an alleged case of money laundering to the tune of N80.2bn.

In a circular signed by an Assistant Comptroller of Immigration, DS Umar, for the Comptroller-General, Kemi Nandap, the NIS detailed the former governor’s name, nationality, and passport number.

“I am directed to inform you that the above-named person has been placed on the watch list. Suffice to mention that the subject is being prosecuted before the Federal High Court Abuja for conspiracy, breach of trust, and money laundering vide letter Ref; CR; 3000/EFCC/LS/EGCS.1/ TE/Vide/1/279 dated April 18, 2024. If seen at any entry or exit point, he should be arrested and referred to the Director of Investigation or contact 08036226329/07039617304 for further action.” the circular reads in part

UEFA announced on Thursday it had fined Barcelona 25,000 euros ($26,680) for racist behaviour by their fans after two supporters were questioned by police following their Champions League quarter-final first leg with Paris Saint-Germain.


Barcelona were also banned from selling tickets to their supporters for their next away European game, although that punishment is suspended for a year.



Barca lost the tie 6-4 on aggregate after PSG won Tuesday’s second leg 4-1.



On April 10, Paris police said they had questioned two people after videos were published on social media of a supporter making monkey noises and another making Nazi salutes at the Parc des Princes.


“The UEFA Appeals Body has decided to fine FC Barcelona 25,000 euros and to ban the FC Barcelona from selling tickets to its away supporters for its next UEFA competition match, for the racist behaviour of its supporters,” UEFA said.


“Said ban from selling tickets to its away supporters is suspended for a probationary period of one year, starting from the date of the present decision.”

Bobrisky moved from Ikoyi to Kirkiri prison

Controversial cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, famously known as Bobrisky, has been relocated from the Ikoyi Correctional Center to the Kirikiri Prison by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS).



Recall that after he was convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment for Naira Abuse last Friday, April 12, the judge ordered that he be remanded in Ikoyi correctional center in Lagos.



Leadership however reports that the social media personality has been discreetly transferred to Kirikiri Prison.



A source was quoted as saying;

“It is procedural that he is moved to Kirikiri since it is an expansive prison compared to what we have here.”



The source added that due to security reasons, Okuneye was quietly moved to the facility where he will serve his term

Former Minister for Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has urged Nigerian leaders to always go for projects and policies that would be beneficial to the people despite their initial inconveniences or consequences.

The former Lagos governor also said the notion that “the end justifies the means” could no longer be a standard practice in governance, stressing that the leader must do the right thing even if the consequence won’t go down well with the population.

He spoke at the first Lagos Leadership Summit organised by Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy on Wednesday at Konga Place in Lekki, Lagos.

“Days of the end justifies the means can no longer be the gold standard for governance anymore. The process must be as important as the result. I subscribe to enjoyment after adversity because I have had introspection on every sustainable success story we have had, not one of them had not been built on the foundation of adversity.

The Student Loan Scheme of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration is finally set to take off with about 1.2 million beneficiaries.



Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND’s) Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO), Mr. Akintunde Sawyer said the loan scheme will take off soon after President Tinubu signed it into law on April 3.




It will be funded with one per cent of the total annual collectable revenue by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). The FIRS has already been given a revenue target of N19.4 trillion.



If the target is met, N194 billion will be available as a loan to the beneficiary students and repayment, according to the law, will commence two years after the completion of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC).



Commenting on the scheme, the NELFUND CEO said;



“We don’t expect to have more than 1.2 million students in the first instance. As time goes on, there will probably be expansion.

“For the successful applicants, we will be paying their fees – the full amount – directly to the institutions.
