Autos / 2019 Mercedes-amg G63 First Look by kitanga: 5:05pm On Nov 03, 2018
With the recent debut of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the birth of a new AMG variant was all but assured. Now, almost a month later, Mercedes has something to offer those who think the new G550 simply isn’t enough: the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63. The G63 and G65 AMG models have been the choice of Hollywood’s entertainment elite for years, providing occupants a commanding view of Los Angeles’ congested highways and city streets as their drivers outmaneuvered Tinseltown’s notorious paparazzi.

MORE POWER, MORE LUXURY, MORE GLITZ, AND MORE GLAM.

The G63 AMG—and the G-Class range as a whole—has also provided something else, in this case for Daimler: massive piles of cash in exchange for considerably little effort. As the G-Class and its high-performance variants aged, sales went nowhere but up. Still, Mercedes-Benz couldn’t reliably cash in on the aging off-roader forever, as Land Rover and other luxury SUV manufacturers have edged in on the G-Class’ turf. Therefore, it was time for Mercedes to start from scratch for the first time in nearly three decades—which is as much a testament to its own longevity as it is to our willingness to buy expensive personal totems of social status and financial wealth.

The new G63 rids itself of the 5.5-liter biturbo V8 its had since the model replaced the G55 Kompressor in 2012. Replacing the old engine beats a brand-new 4.0-liter biturbo V8 to the tune of 577 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque—over 60 lb-ft more than the outgoing G63. Peak torque is available between 2,500 and 3,500 rpm in 4.0 liter, allowing the broadsided SUV to sprint to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, an improvement of nearly a second. While the G63 is limited to 137 mph, those with the need for speed and the cash to make it happen can bump that limiter up to 149 mph by opting for the AMG Driver’s package.

Even with its liter-and-a-half deficit, the new 4.0-liter biturbo V8 is able to make considerably more twist due to Mercedes-AMG’s ingenious turbo arrangement, which places the snails between the cylinder banks. By making the system more compact overall, the new engine is as efficient and clean as one can be that produces over 600 lb-ft of torque. Further aiding the engine in keeping fuel consumption to a relative minimum is the inclusion of a new cylinder deactivation system, while both an ECO start/stop function and gliding mode have been carried over from the prior-generation G63.

The new 4.0 liter sends its power through a new nine-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, dubbed AMG Speedshift TCT 9G, with multiple shift modes depending on the driving environment. In “Sport” and “Sport Plus”, the transmission engages a double-declutching function for “an even more emotional driving experience,” said Mercedes in its release. The transmission can also skip gears when downshifting for rapid acceleration when needed. Furthermore, the G63’s nine-speed can be switched to manual mode and controlled through steering wheel mounted-paddle shifters. In that mode, the transmission will hold its gear and not automatically upshift when it hits redline.

After the transmission, power is transmitted to all four wheels via the G63’s AMG Performance 4Matic all-wheel drive system, which now splits power 40/60 front/rear versus the 50/50 split of the prior-generation G63. Keeping everything planted is a completely redesigned suspension that uses coil springs at all four corners, an independent double-wishbone suspension at the front, a five-link suspension and rigid axle at the rear, and adaptive adjustable damping as standard. Drivers can control damping levels—“Comfort,” “Sport,” and “Sport+”—through a switch on the centre console.

Three other modes—“Sand,” “Trail,” and “Rock”—give the G63’s tires some extra bite when off-road, and its 9.5 inches of clearance between the ground and rear axle make traversing rocks and stumps as drama-free as possible. However, it’s what’s inside the G63 that really counts. This is an SUV for those who want more of everything, and Mercedes has given it to them. Ergonomically designed seats come with the memory functions one would expect from a six-figure SUV. An optional “Multicontour Seat” package adds massage functions, cooling, electrically adjustable lumbar support, and air chambers that can adjust to make the bolsters stiffer for more lateral support.

The dash is home to analog gauges as standard, but many will option their way up to the high-tech Widescreen Cockpit with two 12.3-inch displays mounted side-by-side to create one of the most opulent instrument display arrangements money can buy. Those screens sit behind a single shared piece of glass for seamless integration with each other. Outside, an all-new body uses high-strength steel and aluminum to increase torsional rigidity by 55 percent and also keep weight to a minimum, though Mercedes hasn’t yet cited a curb weight for the model. At launch, Mercedes-AMG will offer up a special edition of the new G63.

Edition 1 will arrive with a Night Black Magno paint, contrasting grey stripes along its side, and a decorative red stripe around its exterior mirror housings. Additionally, an available AMG Night package brings with it high-gloss black touches and matte-black 21- or 22-inch forged wheels. Pricing will be announced closer to the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63’s U.S. launch toward the end of 2018.

Politics / Missing’ N91trn Oil Revenue: Reps Summon NNPC GMD, 2 Firms by kitanga: 3:48pm On Nov 01, 2018
The House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) yesterday summoned the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru, over alleged missing N91trillion oil revenue.

Also to appear alongside Baru, in a yet to be fixed date, are Managing Directors of Alkhairi Oil Plus Energy Limited, Mr. Ibrahim Bature and Mahat Petroleum/Gas Limited, Mr. Friday Olelewe.

The Committee Chairman, Joseph Akinlaja (ZLP, Ondo) who announced the summon in Abuja said the invitees must appear before the Committee to explain their role in the alleged backhand lifting of 80 trillion metric tonnes of crude oil since 27 June, 2016, in which Nigeria has lost over N91 trillion revenue.
According to him, the Committee’s investigation rests on a motion on the floor of the House in June 2018, which disclosed that Nigeria is currently losing over N91trn naira over an illegal oil deal between NNPC and a Chinese oil lifting firm, Huang Bo Hai Petrochemical Industries Limited.

“Without NNPC and Alkhairi Oil Limited and Mahat Petroleum, I don’t think we can make any progress in this investigation.
“We want to use this medium to summon their Managing Directors to appear before this Committee to tell Nigerians the truth about the oil lifting deal in which Nigeria has been shortchanged of over N91 trillion, more than 12 year budget, since 2016.

“This illegal deal is between the NNPC and its agents, Alkhairi and Mahat on the one hand and Huang Bo Hai and its own agent, Effizhy Oil and Gas on the other hand. They must all appear before this committee in our next sitting or we invoke the necessary legal instrument,” Akinlaja warned.

Mr. Bola Aidi, a lawyer who represented Ephizhy Oil at the hearing noted that an agreement between NNPC and Huang Bo Hai on the alleged deal stipulated that the 80 trillion metric tones of crude, comprising 1,045 barrels per tonne, would be lifted at N42 each.

“The bigger picture is that of the N42, NNPC takes N37, my client Ephizhy takes N4, making a total of N41 per barrel. This means that N1 is unaccounted for. If you multiply it by 80 trillion metric tonnes, that is a huge chunk,” Aidi told the Committee.

However, NNPC, in a letter sent to the Committee by its GMD, Maikanti Baru, vehemently denied the existence of such deal.

Mr. Akinlaja said by denying the existence of the deal, NNPC had admitted that it does not have a proper record of its transaction, “which is why they appear to explain why the country is being short-changed of such huge amount.”

But Mr. Aidi said he has “incontrovertible evidence of the existence of the transaction,” which he said had been ongoing since 2016, and was even reported to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Politics / Segun Awosanya Blasts Keyamo On Twitter by kitanga: 3:11pm On Oct 27, 2018
Segun Awosanya, a Nigerian realtor, human rights activist and convener of the #ENDSARS campaign blasted the Director, Strategic Communications of President Buhari 2019 Presidential Campaign on twitter.

In a series of tweets today, Segun says Keyamo is simply ignorant.

Read the tweet below:

You’re simply ignorant SAN @fkeyamo. This goes to show how meaningless titles are in Nigeria. Our VP supervised & legitimized the corruption hub in Lagos for 8years if not more & GMB received Billions from Atiku for campaign, which never got to the Campaign Organisation. Selah

While luxuriating in N460m largesse from NNPC, at least deliver substance to the poor unfortunate souls that are enabling your activities in that putrid hub of strange bird fellows. U can’t succeed at using corruption as a differentiating factor. GMB’s Regime is the worst ever!

Nigerians have rejected Lifelessness in its entirety. You can not blackmail your candidate back into office. He has nothing to offer even if given a hundred years to continue ruining Nigeria. We understand that this time it can only get worse since it will be their final lap.

We have seen the trajectory and the analyzed the risk involved. Nigeria will be irreparable should your candidate get a stay. We are aware you are all trying to deceive Nigerians and rig elections but the people will be waiting to see you trigger the long awaited revolution.

It is a clear case of “Chronomicide” ( bloody waste of precious time) to engage the likes of U, as you’re not significant in the scheme of things. Just like yesterday I recall how you ingratiated yourself into the system, while feeding on crumbs as an apologist of various ills.

U’re an aberration to theGown cum a bragging, brattish, ill-informed, privileged self righteous entitled usurper of power & dubious sub-literate, who proliferates inanities for a living. There’s nothing worse than being a shadow of one-self. U’re what our children must not become

You are lucky I have no stake in any political party nor hold brief for any candidate. You and your enablers would have been buried with facts that would reveal the rot that you all represent and the doom that awaits those enslaved to your mental slavery & weaponized poverty.

Nigerians know better, to be a politician in Nigeria is to first be baptized in the pool of corruption. Your handlers should have told you this. Corruption to you in your dormant state shouldn’t only mean the misappropriation of funds but also the subversion of the rule of law.

Nigerians need a genuine “Nigerian” leader who is capable and competent enough to unleash the latent value of the people by creating enabling environment for ALL to thrive not only the connected few from the North/Daura. We need a leader that listens & takes Responsibility

To sell an expired, failed and fruitless ruler to us in the 21st Century is to prove the lack of vigor and relevance of education on your person. The facts are out there. The grandest of all heists is being experienced under the current admin and you dare point fingers?

Put me before any Prime Minister or Government globally and I will prove to them all Governments globally are guilty of one form of corruption or the other but only in a lifeless country would you justify subjugation of the rule of Law & destruction of institutions as a Virtue.

Don’t sell godless and lawless depot to us under the guise of faux anti-corruption. You pr candidate is the founding father of Corruption. In the history of our democracy. We will not be deceived again & INEC rigging won’t help a rejected ruler. Revolution beckons! We Dey watch.

HE Atiku will answer to the people. We are assured he will present his certificates, appear for debates, create jobs if elected and declare his health status without the engagement of a 100 unconscionable hungry SANs. But ask your candidate if he would do these without drama.

Let the record reflect that till tomorrow across institutions in Nigeria, children of the highly connected elites remain the beneficiary of CBN, FIRS, Immigration, Ports authority etc juicy jobs via illegal backdoor route yet to Keyamo, this is Lawful & a show of integrity.

Just in case they ask who is speaking, tell them it is the “No One” who stood in front of the barrel of the Gun and demanded the freedom of innocent citizens of Nigeria from Police brutality and impunity when Politicians feeding fat on security votes kept Mum.

Tell them it is the same “No One” who stood in the gap when the ePassport Scheme faced the threat of opportunist (CBN boys) hoping to circumvent the innovation and bring back Oluwole forgeries into business. They failed because we stood by Nigeria even without making noise.

In case they are not convinced tell them it is the same “No One”
Who stood against the disenfranchisement & illegal dismissal of 2000 Immigration officers just to allocate the slots to children of the highly connected to the powers that be. They failed & 888 got their jobs back.

There are many more security based engagement I may not disclose but this very “No One” will not watch while the future of our children and coming generations will be destroyed simply because of the preservation of the earnings of a corrupt few. This admin has failed!

t is such a shame that ordinary citizens, who have no business with politics have greater achievements that benefits the people nationally than a sitting President, who still hopes to continue making life difficult for all just because of obsession with power.

Crime / Security Challenges: Military Launches “operation 777’’ by kitanga: 10:08am On Oct 26, 2018
The Military has launched “Operation 777’’ to restructure ongoing operations across the country designed to checkmate criminal activities, including the Boko Haram insurgency, armed banditry, kidnapping, militancy and crude oil theft.

Briefing newsmen on the new operation on Thursday at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja, Brig.-Gen. John Agim, the Acting Director Defence Information (DDI), said operation 777 began on October 10.

Some of the ongoing operations meant to be restructured by operation 777 include “Whirle Punch,’’ to fight banditry and armed robbery on the Abuja-Kaduna road, as well as Birnin Gwari area of Kaduna state.

The others are “Delta Safe’’ to tackle oil theft, bunkering and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta, and “Awatse’’ designed to check pipeline vandalism in Lagos and Ogun states.

Among them also are “Operations Safe Haven in Plateau, Bauchi and part of Kaduna state, “Sharan Daji’’ which was set up to fight armed banditry in the North West and “Clearance’’ to fight kidnapping in Kogi.

In Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba States is “Operation Whirle Stroke’’, fighting herdsmen/farmers clashes and banditry.
According to the DDI, operation 777 is running concurrently with the existing operations and designed to consolidate on their achievements.

“The operation is also geared toward enhancing a conducive and stable environment for socio-economic activities and safety of Nigerians, as well as preventing bandits and outlaws from escaping to other peaceful areas.

“Consequently, the operation is expected to raise the confidence of the public in the affected states, particularly the IDPs to return back to their homes,’’ Agim said.

He said since operation 777 commenced two weeks ago, a lot of achievement had been recorded, including the recovery of large cache of arms, arrest of suspects, while several others were neutralised.

Agim listed the recovered weapons as five AK47 rifles, 20 bow and arrow, 113 of 7.62mm live ammunition, 20 live catridges and four rifle magazines.

He put the number of neutralised suspects as 35, while 98 bandits/criminals were arrested since the operation commenced, adding that the suspects had been handed over to the police for prosecution.

He added that 419 rustled cattle, 405 sheep and 101 goats were also recovered and handed over to various committees established, to return them to rightful owners.

The DDI said that within the period, the camp of a Benue “notorious criminal and cult leader, Gana’’ had been located, while 15 of his members, including his wife were neutralised.

“Gana managed to escape, but our troops are on his trail. Sequel to this, many of the IDPs have started returning home.

“The Chairman of Logo Local Government Area of Benue confirmed that 27,000 out of the 34,000 IDPs in Anyiin IDP camp have returned home,’’ Agim said.

He said that in the period under review when operation 777 began, 398 metric tonnes of stolen crude oil, 67,000 litres of refined AGO were recovered in the Niger Delta region.

Agim also said that 126 reservoirs, 34 illegal refineries, 27 wooden boats and “quantity 101 of100 litres of drums of PMS’’ were recovered during the period.

“Regrettably, during these operations, the military suffered some casualties. Two soldiers were killed in action, two wounded in action.

“Equally, two soldiers were missing in action, while one AK47 rifle is missing in action,’’ he said.

Agim used the opportunity to appeal to Nigerians to cooperate with the military and other security agencies in the efforts to address current challenges in the country.

Politics / Atiku’s Penetration Into South-west Rattles APC by kitanga: 9:27am On Oct 26, 2018
Governors and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-West are currently strategising on ways to mitigate the incursion of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, into the zone ahead of February 16, 2019 election.

According to New Telegraph, the APC, which is in control of the six states in the South-West, is frantically pushing to put the post-primary crisis in some states behind it, come together in the coming days and eke out a winning strategy that will guarantee the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari, ahead of the PDP candidate.

A leader in the ruling APC, who chose to be anonymous, said: “The Atiku challenge is real and we can’t afford to take it for granted because South-West is where the swing votes reside. “As we speak, the signals on the field are not cheering in almost all the six states of the South-West and that is why it is necessary for the party and the presidency to summon everyone and give a marching order on how to prosecute the elections.

“The reverse in the order of crisis we are having in the South-West is unfortunate. PDP used to be the party in crisis before now, but they are gradually shaking off that nomenclature. Currently, all is not well with our party in Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Oyo and perhaps Osun.

“Unfortunately, this division is beginning to create in-roads for PDP and Atiku in the zone. His offer of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has also emboldened his campaign in the zone.
We can’t afford to sleep on them because we learnt they are meeting different people and groups in the zone.” Meanwhile, one of the governors in the APC controlled state of the South-West is said to have warned traditional rulers in his state against partisan politics, stating that they are royal fathers and not politicians.

It was gathered that the governor gave the directive to the traditional rulers following a proposed courtesy visit of some PDP leaders to select traditional rulers in the South-West next month.

However, barring any last minute change, leaders of the PDP in the South- West are set to converge on Lagos today for a stakehold-ers’ meeting.

Aside from using the meeting to appraise the reports of primary elections conducted in the zone, the gathering is expected to chart a course for the 2019 election, appoint campaign teams and also deliberate on the proposal of Atiku to offer the zone the SGF slot.

A source within the zonal executive of the party said: “We are meeting in Lagos on Friday and we will be deliberating on many crucial matters, including the SGF offer by the presidential candidate.

“I don’t want to pre-empt the meeting, but I know that the zone will still demand for more positions from the candidate. We have the second largest voting population after the North-West and I think that should be key to any form of negotiation,” he said.

Politics / APC, PDP Senators Clash At NASS Over Keyamo’s ‘corrupt’ Comment On Atiku by kitanga: 5:28pm On Oct 25, 2018
The fight for 2019 Presidential Election reared its head on Wednesday at Senate Committee screening of nominees at the National Assembly, Abuja.

Senators on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) sharply disagreed over comment by the spokesperson of Buhari Campaign Organisation, Festus Keyamo that the PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar was corrupt.

Trouble started when Keyamo appeared before the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions for screening as a nominee into the governing board of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

Tempers were however high when the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim (PDP Kwara South), reminded Keyamo of his recent comment that Atiku Abubakar is corrupt.

Senator Ibrahim while trying to drill Keyamo on the comment said: ”I want to refer to your words when you said the presidential candidate of the PDP is corrupt. I think you may have to wait until you’re done with the job before you can sit on the board.
“This is something that I saw myself. You just have to educate us properly on how you can balance the two.”

But APC members of the committee like Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central), Umar Kurfi (Katsina Central), Fatimah Raji Rasaki (Ekiti Central) etc, disagreed with Senator Ibrahim by warning him not to mix politics with the screening exercise.

Specifically, Senator Goje in his reaction said: ”I want to observe and caution the chairman that in as much as we belong to different political parties, we shouldn’t bring too much politics on this matter.
“In fact, we have more APC members here, so if we want to vote, we can vote against you. Our government is doing a lot and we’re doing everything possible to see that things are done well.”

In her reaction, Senator Raji Rasaki said: “I thing what we’re doing should have nothing to do with politics. I believe Mr Keyamo if cleared will be a very good assets for the NDIC while Kurfi submitted that Keyamo is an asset that must be allowed to serve on the NDIC board.”

While responding to the alleged comment, Keyamo said: “When the Senate of the United States came out to say that somebody brought slush fund into the US and as such the person is corrupt, we can call the person corrupt. That’s what we relied on. But we can’t call such person a convict”.

“I respect your judgment on my comments. When you say somebody is corrupt and you provide documents. We rely on the parliament for certain documents and…

Interjecting, Ibrahim said Keyamo had started “playing dirty” in the political game. “I know your antecedents. You are a civil rights lawyer, and maybe that is why EFCC is using you and it is getting results,” he said.

The APC senators in the committee, however, warned Ibrahim against asking questions they termed as political.

Senator Umaru Kurfi also said, “Personally, I have been following all the write-ups of Mr Keyamo. To me, he is an asset. If he is not doing anything right, we can caution him. As far as I’m concerned, let us give him the chance.”
