The former Rivers REC, Gesila Khan.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in charge of the 2015 Rivers governorship election, Gesila Khan has reportedly made confessions in custody of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The REC had been arrested by the zonal office of the EFCC alongside four others on Thursday, April 14 and the anti graft agency reports that over N675.1m has been discovered in the bank accounts of different electoral officers in Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states.
Reports say the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) received and shared the said amount during the last gubernatorial election.
The Punch reports that Khan had been questioned by the Department of State Security (DSS) in July, 2015, but had no charges against her.
In the recent arrest, however, the residences of all the suspects were searched and incriminating documents were said to have been recovered by the commission.
Khan, who has since been deployed to Cross River state, was reported to have received N185.8m ahead of the March 28 and April 11, 2015, elections.
A reliable source with the EFCC revealed that Khan made confessional statements where it was gathered that she received the money through a special bank account.
“Khan was the REC in Rivers State in 2015 election before she was transferred to Cross River early this year. She was said to have received N185.8m. She has made confessional statements,” the source revealed.

Also, one Edem Okon Essanga, a retired INEC official, was picked up by the anti graft agency alongside his alleged accomplice, Immaculata Asuquo, who is the head, voter education of INEC in Akwa Ibom.
The source at the EFCC added that
“Essanga received N241.1m during the general election. He admitted receiving the money and confirmed sharing it with different ad hoc workers during the election. His accomplice Asuquo has also been arrested.”
Fidelia Omoile, who was the INEC electoral officer in Isoko-south local government area of Delta, was also picked up and apart the over N112m traced to her, EFCC also recovered some sensitive electoral materials.
“She received N112.4m during the 2015 general election. A search warrant was executed at her residences in Asaba and Benin.
“Sensitive materials used in the 2015 elections were recovered, including evidence of the suspicious bank transaction and land documents that will assist us in our investigations,” the anonymous EFCC source revealed.
INEC’s administrative secretary in Delta, Oluchi Obi-Brown, was among those picked up and investigations by EFCC showed that she allegedly received over N111m and had about $75,000 in an account in the United States.
The source added that “Oluchi received N111.5m during the general election. Investigations showed that she operates a foreign account with the Bank of America. As of February this year, the account balance was $75,857, (N24, 274,240),” explaining further that the total amount found in the bank accounts of the INEC officials stands at N675.1m.
And according to the anonymous source, the commission was banking on the confessional statements to catch the ‘big fish’.
Meanwhile, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), worldwide has demanded the immediate relea se of Khan.
A statement signed by Eric Omare, the group’s spokesman, read: “Mrs. Khan, had gone to the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to honour an invitation and having met with the EFCC team, they demanded for a first class traditional ruler or holder of the national honour of Commander of the Niger (CON) to stand surety to bail her.” https://www.naij.com/801928-inec-officer-reportedly-aided-wikes-election-makes-stunning-confession-efcc-custody.html?source=index_main

Politics / Shehu Sani Admits Buhari Anti-graft War Is Political by lahp(m): 1:04pm On Dec 02, 2015
The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, yesterday said the anti-corruption war by the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was been driven by political consideration.
Sanni charged the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCT, to probe the asset declarations of other Governors who served at the same time as the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, because politics should not be mixed with anti-graft war.
Speaking at the 8th Forum of the laureates of Nigerian National Order of Merit in Abuja, Sanni said after insurgency, no issue should dominate national discourse more than corruption, adding that political considerations could affect the anti-corruption fight.
Reacting to the investigations into the ongoing arms deal supervised by the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, Sanni said corruption has its consequences.
“Corruption has consequences as seen in the arrest of those in charge of security in the last administration,”
“Insurgency is for some industry, business enterprise and means of making money.
“Even Governors would say they allocate hundreds of millions to security but when you go there you won’t find anything.
“They say because of allocation to security they can build schools. So it is for all of us to see why we have not won the war against insurgency and why people are killed because of corruption,” he said.
“Politics mixed with corruption will take us nowhere,” he said.
He further added, “It is only in Nigeria that one says because somebody has contributed to the success of the ruling party, corruption charges should be withdrawn against him. But if he falls out of favour tomorrow, then, EFCC will bring up the remaining charges.http://dailypost.ng/2015/12/02/shehu-sani-admits-buharis-anti-graft-war-is-political/

Politics / Seven Dead, Scores Injured As Fire Burns Down School In Kano by lahp(m): 9:03am On Dec 01, 2015
No fewer than seven students have been reported dead, while 21 others were injured in a Sunday night fire that razed the Government Girls Secondary School, Jogana, Kano state.
PREMIUM TIMES reports that the fire occurred at the biggest hostel of the school when the students were sleeping.
However, it is being alleged that a source at the emergency unit of Murtala Mohammed Hospital disclosed that most of the students died of suffocation and stampede, not burns.
According to the Executive Secretary of Secondary Schools Management Board, Husaini Ganduje, who confirmed the inferno, the cause of the fire is still not known, also confirming that seven students died in the fire while those who sustained injuries were currently receiving treatment.
Hospital and school officials also confirmed the deaths of the seven female students, saying their bodies were deposited at Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital.
In a statement by Usman Bello, the director of press to the deputy governor, the fire was put under control in the night, and the affected students were rushed to hospital.
“Firemen have quenched the fire that broke out at the hostel of the Government Girls Secondary School Jogana and the students have evacuated their classes.
“Those affected were rushed to Gezawa and Sir Sanusi Hospital,” the statement said.
“The commissioner of health has also mobilized health personnel to attend to the victims of the incident.
“The special adviser to the governor on education, Dr. Bakari Ado Hussaini and management of Kano State Senior Secondary Schools all mobilized to the school and were coordinating with the state deputy governor and commissioner of Education Prof. Hafiz Abubakar,” the statement addedhttp://dailypost.ng/2015/11/30/7-dead-scores-injured-as-fire-razes-kano-secondary-school-hostel/

Politics / Autonomy:ex-lg Chairman Seek Govs Support by lahp(m): 8:46am On Dec 01, 2015
The National President of the Association of Ex-Local Government Chairmen in Nigeria, Mr. Albert Asipa, has called for the cooperation of state governors on the issue of local government autonomy.
Asipa, according to a statement on Monday by the National Publicity Secretary of the ASELGON, Abdalar Abubakar, stated this in his acceptance speech shortly after he was elected the president of the association.
Asipa, a journalist and former Chairman, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, promised to work towards taking the association to a greater height.
He said he would engage stakeholders, including the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, national and state Houses of Assembly, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, civil society organisations and traditional rulers with a view to strengthening local government administration in the country.
“To put local administration on the right track, especially on the issue of autonomy, which is not about confrontation with the governors or any other stakeholders, what is required is constructive engagement and for all concerned to demonstrate utmost patriotism that can move the polity forward,” Asipa advised.
The statement added that the national president promised that the association would support President Muhammadu Buhari to fight corruption at all levels of governance.
He urged Buhari not to renege on the promise he made in his inaugural address to pay adequate attention to the issue of local government administration.
He said the association was waiting for the President to match his words with action in this respect.
Asipa commended the governors of Jigawa and Ekiti states for their commitment to conducting local government elections slated for December 19, 2015 and February 13, 2016 respectively.
He urged the states to provide a level playing field that would guarantee free, fair and acceptable elections in the states.
It also called on states where local governments were under caretaker administration to set machinery in motion for the conduct of democratically elected councils in line with the nation’s constitution.http://punchng.com/autonomy-ex-lg-chairmen-seek-govs-support/
Politics / Apga:ojukwus Spirir Behind The New Biafra Protest by lahp(m): 10:15pm On Nov 27, 2015
An All Progressives Grand Alliance stalwart and former Commissioner for Housing in Imo State, Chief Chris Uche, on Thursday revealed that the current pro-Biafra agitation was spurred by the spirit of the late Leader of the defunct Republic of Biafra, Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu.
Speaking at the third memorial anniversary of Ojukwu, Uche said Biafra would be declared a sovereign state without the shedding of blood.
Uche said those who lost their lives in the cause of Biafran struggle would never be forgotten.
According to Uche, the time for the realisation of Biafra was closer than ever.
He said, “Ojukwu gave us a template. He is still alive in our minds. Chief Uwazuruike’s yearly remembrance ceremony in his honour is bringing the time closer for the realisation of Biafra. We shall keep the flag flying and we shall achieve it without shooting of gun.”
Also speaking at the event, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, leader of MASSOB said the essence of the anniversary of Ojukwu was to reawaken the consciousness of Biafra among the Igbo people.
Uwazuruike further called for the unconditional release of Radio Biafra Director, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.
He however expressed regrets over the fact that the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, which recently emerged, was using threats of violence to achieve its aim.
“IPOB believes that since MASSOB has not achieved Biafra through non-violent methods for 16 years, they will achieve it through violence. They threatened fire and castigated some Igbo leaders,” Uwazuruike said.http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/27/325748/

Culture / Ondo Obas:igbos Having Obi Eze Igwe In Yoruba Land Is An Affront by lahp(m): 10:06am On Nov 27, 2015
The Council of Obas in Ondo State has condemned installations of Eze Ndigbo in the South-West.
A communiqué issued yesterday by the council in Akure after its monthly meeting described the trend as “an affront on the state traditional rulers.”
The Obas said having another king in an area where there was one already recoginsed was an attempt to embarrass the Yoruba traditional rulers and the entire institution.
It said that the use of titles such as Eze, Igwe, Obi or any other synonym was not acceptable in the state and that the only chieftaincy title recognized was the one bestowed by the traditional ruler in the state on Igbo indigenes such as chairman or president or leader of Igbo descents.
“The continued use of Eze Ndigbo chieftaincy title and flaunting of paraphernalia of Ndigbo traditional institution in Ondo State is a calculated attempt to embarrass the Yoruba traditional rulers,” the monarchs agreed.
“It is also meant to desecrate the Yoruba traditional institution. It is also an affront on Ondo State traditional rulers”, they added.
The Obas said that the issue of Eze Ndigbo chieftaincy title in Ondo State, which was the title of traditional rulers in Igbo communities, was alien to Yoruba and tradition.
They said, “it is a way of arrogating to the Igbo leaders the traditional power and equating themselves to Yoruba Obas.”
The Obas added that it was forbidden under the extant Chiefs’ Law for any person who was not a recognized Oba in Ondo State to wear a crown, costume or any other paraphernalia of an Oba.
“It is an infraction of the penal law and indeed the Chiefs Law in Ondo State for any person to parade himself as either a minor chief or recognized chief without the requisite approval of the prescribed authority or the State Executive Council as the case may be,’’ they said.
The Council therefore warned that, “whoever wants to be a traditional ruler among the Igbos or any other ethnic groups should go to his domain for such.”http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/27/igbos-having-eze-igwe-obi-in-yorubaland-is-an-affront-ondo-obas/

Politics / Buhari Visits 10 Countries In 181 Days Nigerians Reacts by lahp(m): 2:54pm On Nov 26, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari took over from Goodluck Jonathan on May 29 and since then, he has made a number of trips outside the country.
In his 181 days in office, Buhari has traveled to 10 countries and would still visit more before the year ends.
President Buhari has embarked on more foreign trips than he has done within the country, despite the myriad of challenges facing the country, from fuel scarcity to insurgency in the North East.
His frequent travels abroad has come under criticism as some are of the opinion that he is engaging in wasteful international pleasure trips which is consuming a significant amount of the country’s cash.
Below is a list of countries the president has visited since he assumed office.
1. Niger:
On June 3, the president embarked on his first official trip. He left for Niger Republicto hold talks with President Mahamadou Issoufou on security and how to curb the activities of the terrorist group, Boko Haram in the region.
2. Chad:

4. South Africa:

5. United States of America:
On July 19, President Buhari left Abuja for the USAwith a 33-man delegation. The White House was said to have invited Buhari via a statement on June 27, saying that Barack Obama is looking forward to his visit, during which both leaders will be discussing the threat of Boko Haram and how to tackle insurgency.
He also visited the US again in Septemberfor the UN General Assembly. The president left Katsina state with a 22-man delegation after celebrating the Eid in his home town in Daura.
6. Benin Republic:
On August 1, President Buhari paid a one-day visit to Benin Republicin continuation of the effort to curb Boko Haram insurgency. He was conferred with a traditional title ‘Manahouwhe’ Gbede’, which means “I will never forget you”.He was also conferred with the national honour of Grand Croix du Benin (Grand Cross of Benin), which is the highest award in that country.
7. Ghana:
On September 7, Buhari arrived Ghanawhere he was received by the Ghanaian President, John Mahama. During a press conference with President Mahama, Buhari vowed to appoint his cabinet before the end of September.
8. France:
Buhari left Abuja for Parison September 14, on a three-day official visit following an invitation from his French counterpart Francois Hollande. They both had a closed door meeting where they decided on military cooperation. Buhari also met with top management of biggest multinational companies to discuss their future investments in Nigeria.
9. India:
On October 27, President Buhari left Abuja for New Delhi, India, to take part in the 3rd Summit of the India-Africa Forum. While in the country, Buhari joined other African leaders at summit. He also met with Nigerians living in India and had discussions with Indian businessmen.

The president still has other trips to make before the year ends. He will be leaving for Malta today to participate in the 2015 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
Below are some reactions of Nigerians to Buhari’s frequent foreign trips.
My brother, I just tire. There’s really no justification for this PMB’s trip. Even if symbolic, show you care…… https:///08ip1aLwrC

Politics / Buhari Agrees:our Road Are Bad by lahp(m): 11:36am On Nov 26, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari has admitted that the nation’s roads are in precarious state and are in dire need of attention by the Federal Government.
He also made case for the immediate development of infrastructure such as rail and power.
Buhari spoke during a presidential dinner he hosted in honour of senators at the new Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.
“The roads are dead. Those who drive between Lagos and Ibadan will have a lot of stories to tell you. Those who drive from Kaduna to Jebba may have more stories to tell. The same thing is applicable to the East West Road,” the President said.
He urged the Senate to assist his government in concentrating on the problem of infrastructure such as rail, road and power.
He asked the Senate committees to look at the various agreements the nation had entered into in the last six years and see where Nigeria had been defaulting in terms of payment of counterpart fundings.
He observed that if the nation could get the railway working, lives and fuel would be saved.
The President also touched on the nation’s economy, saying the drop in the price of oil was affecting it negatively.
While thanking the Senate for the speed with which his ministerial nominees were approved, he urged them to treat the nation’s budget with the same sense of urgency.
“We are enjoying tremendous goodwill outside this country. Whatever we do, let us have it in mind that people have confidence in this government,” the President said.
The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, thanked the President on behalf of his colleagues and pledged the senators’ continuous support for the government.
While admitting that the challenges ahead are enormous, Saraki said he believed that when God gives man a position, He would also equip him with the capacity to carry out the task.
In treating national issues, he promised that the Senate under his watch would not be sentimental.
“Petrol does not know the APC or the PDP. We will always work hard in the interest of the country in everything we do,” Saraki promised.
Journalists were later politely asked to leave the venue to enable the President to have a closed-door interactive session with the senators.
The dinner was also attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu; top government officials and presidential aides.
Meanwhile, Buhari has warned that his administration will not hesitate to prosecute anyone found culpable in the mismanagement of government funds provided for the upkeep of the nation’s tertiary institutions.
Buhari spoke on Wednesday during a special convocation for the installation of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, as the ninth Chancellor of the University of Benin, Edo State.
He noted that while his administration was committed to providing funding for the revitalisation of the education sector, his regime “will not fold its arms and watch unscrupulous elements mismanage these very valuable resources.”http://punchng.com/our-roads-are-dead-buhari-admits/

Travel / Heartbreaking:one Of The Nigerians Deported Shares His Ordeal by lahp(m): 5:39am On Nov 26, 2015
One of the Nigerians deported from the United Kingdom on November 25, Wednesday, has narrated his story to Detained Voices.
The United Kingdom has deported 50 Nigerians after having committed different offences while in the country.
The deportees, made of 44 males and six females arrived into Nigeria aboard a chartered B767 aircraft belonging to PITAN Airways.
The federal government had recently expressed concern over the UK’s plan to deport some 29,000 of its nationals demanding that due process be followed before any Nigerian is sent back from the UK.
READ ALSO: Nigerian Deportees Arrive Lagos From The UK
Read the story below:
“Basically, the charter flight is for today and they’re trying to get us on the flight. But here lies the problem.
“We all know very well, according to the rules anyway, if they want to take us they have to get travel documents for all of us. But then they have already issued travel certificates for everybody without anybody actually signing for it. How does that work?
“Obviously there have been allegations this week against the home office and against the Nigerian embassy about, you know bribary, to make sure she issues travel documents for people without their knowledge, you understand what I mean.
“According to the information we are getting, each person gets £3000. Basically, all of us have been sold to the British Government to do whatever they wants to do to us. We’ve been very calm. We’ve asked them can you get the home office to explain how they’ve got travel documents for us when we didn’t sign for it. Obviously that’s fraud because I haven’t signed for anything.

“How are we supposed to follow the rules and regulation when those rules and regulations of the Home Office clearly doesn’t apply to them. They actually break the law on a regular basis. They bribe people on a regular basis.
“Half of the people on the flight today have family here. They shouldn’t be going to Nigeria in the first place. I left Nigeria 17 years ago, right, I was 9 years old when I left Nigeria. I had only really lived in Nigeria for 6 years. And you are telling me it’s okay you can go back there. To where? My dad passed away last month. Who am I going back to?
“Who am I going back to? My sisters here, my brothers here. My niece has very big health problems. She’s got heart issues. They’re in London. She needs help on a regular basis. My sister cannot handle it. We are just sat in the room basically. We are waiting for the officers to forcefully remove us. We are just in the room waiting. Because at the end of the day, they haven’t answered our questions.”https://www.naij.com/648647-read-heartbreaking-story-one-nigerians-deported-uk.html

Nairaland / General / 48 Not 500 Nigerians Deported by lahp(m): 6:19pm On Nov 25, 2015
The United Kingdom Government on Wednesday deported 48 Nigerians over immigration related offences.
The deportees came aboard a chartered plane that touched down at the Hajj and Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos at about 8am, our correspondent gathered.
The Spokesperson of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Mr. Ekpedeme King, who confirmed the development, said the Nigerians were deported for immigration-related offences.
“Some of them have overstayed their visa,” King said.
According to King, it is part of the duty of the NIS officials at the airport to receive Nigeria deportees from foreign countries.
Top immigration officials at MMIA, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the 48 deportees had nothing to do with the 29,000 Nigerians that the UK was planning to deport back into the country.
The British Broadcasting Corporation had reported in the morning that a plane carrying about 500 Nigerians deportees from the UK had landed at the MMIA. The reported quoted some of the deportees as saying that they were not happy to come back.
However, the NIS officials said only 48 Nigerians deportees arrived from the UK.
Nigeria had recently expressed concern over the UK’s plan to deport 29,000 Nigerians, and has insisted that due process be followed before Nigerians are removed from the UK.
The Federal Government had said the UK must ensure that those been deported are really Nigerians, medically fit to travel and have a role to play in the country – meaning they should be able to fit into Nigerian societyhttp://punchng.com/10307-2/

Nairaland / General / UN:2015 Maybe Hottest Year Ever by lahp(m): 4:26pm On Nov 25, 2015
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) on Wednesday in Geneva said that year 2015 would likely become the hottest year since the pre-industrial era.
WMO in a report said that due to man-made global warming and the strong El Nino weather phenomenon, the average global temperature this year was set to rise one degree above the levels seen between 1880 and 1899.
Ocean surfaces have also reached record temperatures, and greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere have crossed the level of 400 parts per million since January 2015.
“This is all bad news for the planet,” WMO Secretary General Michel Jarraud said as he presented the preliminary annual assessment, ahead of the UN climate talks starting Nov.30 in Paris.http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/25/un-says-2015-may-become-hottest-year-on-record/

Senators largely of the All Progressives Congress stayed away from Wednesday’s sitting as Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu presides over plenary.
Ekweremadu is presiding over today’s sitting as the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has traveled to Ikenne in Ogun State to attend the burial ceremony of Mama H.I. D Awolowo which was scheduled to take place today.
DAILY POST observed that today’s sitting is, however, quite stable compared to the first time Ekweremadu presided over the Senate.
Senators of the Unity Forum who have been neck deep in leadership tussle including their arrowhead, Senator Kabiru Marafa are participating fully in today’s plenary.
