Litmus:

No true Nigerian would begrudge the government of Nigeria extending financial assistance to Haiti. Nigerians are extremely generous at heart, the majority I have met would forgo much in order to help others. Nigeria the country regularly assists the development of many other African countries. Check your history and you will discover Nigeria even funded the Jamaica civil service  for a time when America began to tighten relations with Jamaica because Michael Manley’s regime appeared to sympathize with communism and many Jamaicans traveled to work with Cubans. Obasanjo funded and sent many Nigerian graduates to assist in Ethiopia.

As a Nigerian, my only disappointment is that the amount of money my government wants to send to another black nation in need, especially to a country such as Haiti that occupies such an important part of Black history, is too small.  The government should promise and deliver a much higher amount of money to Haiti.

Thank you Litmus and GOD Bless you for having a compassionate heart. People like you will bring greatness to this country.

White people have long memory. Haiti is essentially a nation suffering from the humiliation it dealt the western nations a few hundred years in the past. Nigeria with its entire anti-apartheid history and the cock-a-snoop at the cosy white stereotypes attitude of its people, are on the way to Haiti.

people are being slayed like goats in parts of nigeria
what has the government done or said or pledged to that?

Ayettymama, I must say that you are a very insensitive person and a typical representative of the despotic Nigerians that have not allowed the country to move forward. You sound like them, your arguments are like theirs, which lacks any projection for futures and only lives for the day. God forbid that Nigeria has a major disaster. We will be judged by our previous actions. Thank God that there are many informed Nigerians who understand the ways of international politics.

Please yearn to get educated rather than feeling the compulsion to say something, which leads to the exposure of your folly.

P.S. I noticed that your posts are consistently in support of despotic positions. People only need to read your posts history to know where you belong.

I have to say this. EcoBank stole N70,000.00 out of my account because of ATM. This happened after trying unsuccessfully at 3 different ATM locations that stalled when it was time to disburse funds. I finally got cash at an Ecobank ATM that Saturday. But guess what? When I noticed the issue, I went into the Bank, and they made printouts that showed "ATM transaction reversals". I thought that will end the issue, but these thieves claimed that "transaction reversals" were debits instead of credits. I even followed this up to their Head Office in V/I and they kept telling me that they will get back to me. After over a year of them stalling, I finally gave up. I got rid of their ATM card after that. These Banks are criminal organizations. I challenge any EcoBank top official to take this up with me. Damned criminals!!!

A police force is not a military force. The Police are trained to keep the peace and interact with civilians, while Soldiers and other Military personnel are trained to protect the Nation and it's border and to kill. A civilian government is not ruled by decree, and any such decrees should have been nullified upon the resumption of civilian democratic administration. The cost of not getting a good education could be a lifetime of misery, while the benefits are priceless.

Sometimes the average Nigerian baffles me. Here are people whose futures are being negotiated like kalokola for selfish interests, yet, they continue to wallow in pain and caring more about oga that has a common cold while they suffer with terminal ailments. Everyone (at least average Nigerians) thinks Yaradua is a nice guy, and most people want the best for him. However, this man is very ill and is suffering from what many doctors consider to be terminal ailments. The honorable thing to do is to resign. The man needs peace and tranquility for the rest of his life, and not the rigorous demands of a presidency.

It is easy to conclude that his wife Turai does not love this man, and the rest of his Family are pursuing self interests. My personal belief is that the man is mentally incapacitated and could never function in leadership again. If this wasn't so, I am almost certain that Yaradua wold have resigned. All Nigerians who truly care about this man will hurry up and get him impeached for his own sake. His recovery may indeed depend on this action. Can you imagine the pressures that the self serving people will bombard him with at any sign of recovery? This will send him straight back into sickness.

Nigerians who wish to preserve the dignity and respect of President Yaradua will take immediate action to impeach him as a humane measure. Congress should afford him all the assistance that they can to make sure that he can live peacefully for the rest of his life. Let's show him that we care.

I feel renewed strength and vigour of hope for Nigeria when I read things such as the following from the Arewa consultive forum. We Yorubas are known to be our own harshest critiques. It is nice to see our Northern Brethren following suit:

Senators agitate, insist on seeing Yar'Adua

    * Beware of fake Yar'Adua, ACF chieftain warns

    * Invoke Section 144, says CNPP
From Alifa Daniel, Asst. Political Editor, Abuja

CLAIMS by a group of Islamic clerics that they met and prayed with President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua at the Presidential Villa in Abuja have sparked new agitation over the true state of the health of the ailing number one citizen.

While a group of senators under the aegis of National Interest Group (NIG) are meeting today while they are expected to insist on seeing the President in person, the coalition of opposition parties, the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has called for the invocation of Section 144 of the 1999 Constitution which spells out the handling of the president's and vice president's health status.

However, a chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Mohammed Abdulrahaman, has cautioned that some of Yar'Adua aides are so desperate that they could have presented a "fake president" for the Islamic clerics.

President Yar'Adua has not been seen in public for over 130 days, amidst speculations that he would resume duty soon.

Curiously, most of the speculations appear when the weekly Executive Council of the Federation (EXCOF) is at the corner. "This time I suspect it is because a new EXCOF is about to be inaugurated and some people are nervous," a source said in Abuja.

The new EXCOF is expected to be sworn in tomorrow.

The National Interest Group of Senators (NIG) is billed to meet today to discuss a wide range of issues, including the visit of the clerics and its implication on the national polity.

The NIG, according to one of its members, would also ask to see the nation's Number One citizen since he is now strong enough to receive visitors, but the source would not give further details of the meeting or exactly where it would hold.

"If he is healthy enough now to receive visitors we also want to see him and talk to him," he said.

But the secretary of the NIG, Senator Smart Adeyemi, was not forthcoming with the agenda of the meeting when he was reached on phone yesterday. He would not also confirm if the NIG is meeting today at a location in Abuja.

However, the CNPP, through its spokesman, Osita Okechukwu, noted that the reported visit of the Chief Imam of Abuja National Mosque, Ustaz Mohammed and other Moslem clerics to the President "has once more brought to the front burner the imperative of the new (EXCOF) to invoke Section 144 to avail Nigerians of the true state of his health."

Section 144 of the Constitution states:

"144. (1) The President or Vice-President shall cease to hold office, if - by a resolution passed by two-thirds majority of all the members of the Executive Council of the Federation it is declared that the President or Vice President is incapable of discharging the functions of his office; and

      (b) the declaration is verified, after such medical examination as may be necessary, by a medical panel established under sub-section (4) of this section in its report to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

      (2) Where the medical panel certifies in the report that in its opinion, the President or Vice President is suffering from such infirmity of body or mind as renders him permanently incapable of discharging the functions of his office, a notice thereof signed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives shall be published in the Official Gazette of the Government of the Federation.

      (3) The President or Vice-President shall cease to hold office as from the date of publication of the notice of the medical report pursuant to sub-section (2) of this section.

      (4) the medical panel to which this section relates shall be appointed by the President of the Senate, and shall comprise five medical practitioners in Nigeria:-

      (a) one of whom shall be the personal physician of the holder of the office concerned; and

      (b) four other medical practitioners who have, in the opinion of the President of the Senate, attained a high degree of eminence in the field of medicine relative to the nature of the examination to be conducted in accordance with the foregoing provisions.

      (5) In this section, the reference to "executive council of the Federation" is a reference to the body of Ministers of the Government of the Federation, howsoever called, established by the President and charged with such responsibilities for the functions of government as the President may direct".

The CNPP statement said further: "CNPP reasons that like the Imams, Nigerians earnestly and eagerly want to know whether President Yar'Adua is still capable of discharging the functions of the high office of the President and C-in-C of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

"The invocation of Section 144 is imperative, for going by the statement of the Chief Imam, the capacity of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to discharge the functions of his high office is questionable; moreso when the visit was not made public nor either the Acting President or the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives were offered the golden opportunity accorded the Imams.

"In the absence of doubting the veracity of the Imams' visit, the state of the health and indeed the permanent capacity of the President to discharge the functions of his office cannot be measured or determined by any other scale except the one clearly stipulated in the 1999 Constitution - Section 144.

"Consequently, CNPP challenges the new EXCOF to, as a matter of urgent national importance invoke Section 144 and break the gridlock and the paralysis of a Divided-Presidency."

In a move observers saw as intended to further compound the political tension in the country, and urge Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to get ready to vacate his position, the Chief Imam of the National Mosque in Abuja, Ustaz Musa Mohammed, said that he and two other Islamic clerics visited President Yar'Adua at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday, and from their observations he has recovered and is now fit enough to resume duty.

The Abuja Chief Imam who spoke on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa Service added that although they were not able to sit close to the President, they prayed for him and he raised his hands while joining them to say Amen.

He said the President sat down when they were with him and was dressed in jumper and trousers with a cap to match.

Besides, the Islamic leader who said that he was on the visit together with Dr. Datti Ibrahim Ahmad, President of the Supreme Council of Sharia in Nigeria and one Sheik Musa Pantami, explained that they sought permission from the President's family to see the ailing President and not that they were invited to see him.

"We met him sitting down with his wife while his ADC stood behind him. Although we could not hear what he said, from where we sat, we could see his mouth saying Amen, together with us when we prayed for him. In fact, contrary to rumours that he was seriously ill, we saw that he had improved tremendously and we believe he would be able to resume work any moment from now."

Asked why they did not try to talk to the President, he said they were not politicians and as Islamic clerics, they were there to pray for him and see with their eyes the President whose state of health had generated so much controversy in recent times.

His words: "When we were ushered in, we met the President and his wife seated side by side while his ADC stood to his left side. He shook hands with each one of us beginning with Ibrahim Datti Ahmad, then myself and the other person. We then proceeded to the prayer session where we all raised up our hands and prayed with the President. After, he shook hands with us again and we left at exactly 6:13 p.m."

He said they were all happy with the situation they met the President who had gained enough strength that would enable him to resume work.

Another of the clerics, Dr. Ibrahim Datti Ahmad, told a newspaper (not The Guardian) that though Yar'Adua shook hands with them and prayed together with them, he didn't talk to them.

Dr. Ahmad, who is the president of the Supreme Council of Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN), warned that Yar'Adua's powers must not be taken away from him.

"We met the President around 5.00 p.m. late in the afternoon. Contrary to what some people have been saying, the president is not in a situation where he is almost dead; he is only sick.

"He was sitting down on a dinning chair when we came in and met him. He was not being supported by anybody but himself, he was sitting down calmly. He did not look like someone who is almost dead.

"When we entered, we were not sure of what we were going to meet. So we entered and stood at a respectable distance and greeted him. He extended his hand to us and we shook it one by one. This is contrary to the view of those who keep saying he doesn't know where he is.

"After that, we prayed for his health. He joined us in the prayers, raising his hands the way we raised our own; his lips were moving. When we finished, we told him we only came to greet him. He shook hands with us.

"We did not wait as such after that. However, we told him that we just wanted to see him to know the truth from the lies that they have been telling us that he is dead, no longer able to recognise anyone and all the lies that you and I have heard before.

"Obviously, he has lost some weight and he is a bit weak. But he was sitting down calmly. He shook our hands on arrival and when we prayed with him for his quick recovery, he again shook hand with us.

"I wish to warn that there is need for people to be careful in the utterances being made about incapacitation, taking the presidential authority and giving such to other persons.

"Some people had to reflect before they stage a civilian coup against him. President Yar'Adua has his deputy who could act for him while he is not there. He knows that he is alive and is only unwell at this point in time.

"However, nobody should take over his position because he is not available. The President still has a good chance of recovery. Nobody should take over his post and create problems for the country. Those who are thinking of doing that are playing with fire.

"I will suggest that Dr. Jonathan continues to act as president till Yar'Adua is fit enough to resume. If he does not get well by 2011, election will take place and another person will emerge through a democratic process.

"But if any person attempts to seize that presidential authority now, the consequences will remain with the country for a long time.

"It will not be a wise decision and not in the interest of even younger generations of Nigerians", he said.

Chieftain of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and one-time Vice President of the Kaduna Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KACCIMA), Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahaman, has warned that the Federal Government should subject Yar'Adua to serious medical test if the family and aides eventually present him as fit to continue in office as the nation's President.

Besides, the ACF chieftain faulted the account of the Abuja Mosque Chief Imam, Ustaz Musa Mohammed and prominent Islamic clerics who said they met with Yar'Adua at his Aso rock resident, with his family.

Abdulrahaman said in an interview in Kaduna at the weekend, while reacting to the visit of the Chief Imam and other Islamic leaders, that the Government should be on guard, "because these people (the family and aides of Yar'Adua) are becoming so desperate such that they could go and perform plastic surgery on anybody and present him as president Yar'Adua", stressing that "the account of the clerics which suggests that Yar'Adua was now hail and hearty but could not speak should be given serious medical investigation whenever he appears".

"This whole story of Yar'Adua appearing and the account of the Imam and clerics that they saw him and shook hands with him, I believe these people are becoming more desperate over this matter. And when people are desperate they can go to any length. You see, people who can afford to hide this man from Nigerians for so long, if they are allowed to go further in this game and they are bringing any man out as our President, there is no problem. But, we shall subject any person they bring out as Yar'Adua to DNA Test. To make sure that in their desperation they don't bring anybody with a plastic surgery as our president. Because we know this can be done. Those people have gained so much from the illness of Yar'Adua, they don't love Yar'Adua, certainly they don't, for them to have subjected him to this kind of travail".

"If Yar'Adua becomes well to communicate with Nigerians without any stress, we would be very happy. After all we all fasted and prayed for him,  That is why we have wondered why they have not put the electronic media, particularly the television to record most of these appearances and the visit of the Imams to Yar'Adua, you see, there are a few things that have happened that are unacceptable. It is unacceptable for a group of people to hide the man from Nigerians. Nobody would accept it because he is Nigerian president, and it is an offence to keep him away".

According to Abdulraham, he president "is the property of Nigeria and not the family. So, when he shows up and we see him and we know he is the one, those questions on why he showed be hidden away would have to come up. Some people would have to be prosecuted. I don't think Umaru really had a cabinet before it was dissolved, because of the way most of them behaved. How can you love somebody so much and trade his life for money, for personal gains, for looting and for a chance to misdirect the public treasury and budget?"

Rather than complaining about the assistance being rendered, those in opposition should better use their energies on ways to avoid the looting carried on by our Politicians. Nigerians are famous for acting out of Euphoria. This creates an enabling environment for God-Fatherism. While I appreciate the current moves by Goodluck Jonathan especially in regards to Ribadu, I would rather wait to see consistency over time to enhance his credibility. Our Politicians are aware that once you give Nigerians a few crumbs, they'd be crying out Hossanna. This is an ever-occurring tool of manipulation.

Yes I will vote for Goodluck Jonathan if he continues with progressive policies. I will even get out and campaign vigorously for him. Wish he could have Fashola as his running mate though, or possibly Ribadu. But a Ribadu IG will be the best thing to rehabilitate the Nigerian Police Force and bring back honour into Policing.

@Shoot to kill:

Here is a post that I made today at one of the sites of a Nigerian newspaper:

Solving Nigeria's problems, Part 1 by Femi Animashaun

I find it very pathetic that some caliber of Nigerians still believe that everyone and everything is about Niger Delta Oil. Nigerians are generally good at repeating what their leaders say in beer parlours without an inclination of analysis. It is sooo very simple to solve Nigeria's issues if we only have some leaders with common sense. Every part of Nigeria is very blessed with solid minerals, but we allow ourselves to continue being entrenched in poverty by a few people. Imagine if royalties and taxes being generated by exploitation of mineral wealth in each state equaled and surpassed the income from Oil, what will the agitators of the Niger Delta have to complain about? The next question then would be why are we not developing these resources right? The answer lies within monopolistic practices of some Nigerians who will not let the railroads work because they make money with their fleet of trucks. This makes mining uneconomic. Moving minerals to the coast by road is impractical. If Nigeria wants to move forward, then we should develop our water, rail and road transport systems. Ecological and economic sabotage has been perpetrated in the past by building dams on the 2 main water transport systems of the south. We should stop trusting Oyinbos with our strategic developments. I cry so much for Nigeria, as my people continue to die and suffer out of ignorance.

In regards to your previous post, I agree with you on many aspects except for where you call for foreigners. Do you know that one of the best heart surgeons in the world is a Nigerian at Emory University? Are you aware that North Carolina medical community is full of Nigerians and their president for about the past 15 years has been Nigerian? Do you know that we have many Nigerians working in agencies such as NASA? You only hear about 419 Nigerians because gifted Nigerians live quietly and integrate into their host communities abroad. Are you also aware that Nigerians are the largest group of PHD holders in the United States?

The problem with Nigeria is that our leadership is filled with mediocrity. I am currently writing an article on how to fix the problems of Nigeria. Here is an excerpt of what I have written so far:

Solving Nigeria’s Problems by Femi Animashaun

While most people are engrossed with the current political issues concerning the status of the presidency, once again Nigerians may fail to take advantage of an opportunity to address the underlying issues stagnating our progress. We are talking about Ministerial nominations, yet we are not talking about intelligence quotient and the ability of whatsoever nominees to be capable of logical thinking. As the world develops exponentially, Nigeria remains entrenched in mediocrity emanating principally from leadership. How can we make progress when our leaders do not even know how to turn on computers? Most people here followed the last American elections and are aware of Obama's almost addictive use of his Blackberry. He was always in contact with the people and could read and address issues almost instantly. Our leaders rather surround themselves with thugs and hoodlums, killing and maiming in the name of politics.

It is rather unfortunate that these same leaders have traveled and lived abroad. These same leaders abide by foreign laws successfully and yet come back home to foster ethnic rivalry as a means of gaining political power. Because of what I now see as a deliberate systematic campaign to reverse the educational policies of past leaders such as Awolowo, Nigerians are now much less educated than their peers a generation and 2 generations ago. Nigerians nowadays hardly read because they can hardly survive on the meagre income that they generate from their complete time being spent surviving. While surviving, my people become pawns to political Godfathers who throw a little cash at them to achieve self interest. The infusions of this cash into the pockets of these poor people automatic program them into seeing the Godfathers as saviours. This in-turn creates a form of enslavement which is called loyalty towards the Godfathers.

Slavery very much exists in Nigeria, and this is why you see people capable of going out to kill other Nigerians on the orders of some depraved maniacs who have systematically programmed the minds of the people by playing the role of saviours to these suffering masses. These Godfathers become stronger as the people get fed out of the spoils gained from his political exploits. He becomes master over his throng of slaves who begin to see him as the God of his ethnicity which further entrenches a culture of impunity. All these go on as intellectual Nigerians with vast experiences abroad in industrialized nations attempt to come back home to make change. The get disillusioned fast and are rebuffed and discouraged by a leadership that sees them as a threat. They try to curtail them by stealing their ideas without compensation and then botching up the execution of these ideas due to lack of vision.

It is common knowledge that many from diaspora constantly submit projects to Governors and other government agencies and are rebuffed only to then see their ideas being carried out by cronies of those in government. The court system does not help either due to backlogs and bureaucracy that allows people to gain from economic theft. There are various kinds of economic and financial crimes being carried out with impunity in Nigeria. We as the people should begin to fight against this. We hear people in Government making statements such as “Godfather” controls cement or barite in Nigeria. Statements such as that should be challenged and investigated. What gives any person the God’s given right to declare unilaterally that they control any Nigerian resource? In civilized nations such statement immediately triggers an extensive investigation of anti racketeering laws. Nigerians have to begin to fight these cabals and racketeers who want to keep them entrenched in poverty while forcing monopolistic policies that benefit them. These are clearly economic crimes and border on treachery against the country’s economy.

There are cabals that will fight and kill to prevent you for selling stuff like granite and sand at a lower price because they want to keep their profits high without caring about the consequences on housing for the masses. These are also treacherous people who continue their practices unhindered. In the area my mother lives suddenly after Goodluck was made acting president, we are now having unprecedented supply of continuous flow of electricity. This is the same area that rarely gets 2 hours of power in 2 days. As you can imagine, a large percent of personal income goes to buying fuel, oil and servicing a generator just to be able to get any work done. Students do not get any power to study with and yet are expected to miraculously pass exams. This issue should be probed. Why suddenly, there is power supply running through PHCN lines?

There are enough talented Nigerians all over the World to solve the issues of Nigeria if we get rid of touts in power. We should focus on laws that will create an enabling environment that will allow these people to come back home and help with growth and progress.

Heard Dora will be appointed FCT Minister, thank me later

Not only heard, but also read it online. I think it's a great move to remind the whole of Nigeria that Abuja belongs to all Nigerians.

I see so many people who are concerned about assassination threats against Dora. It is true and well to be concerned, but if Nigeria is serious about protecting it's citizens, then it should pass a law to make it capital punishment to be involved in any way or not to report any information of assassination attempts or plan. Then a panel of judges should be formed consisting of the most respected Nigerians to try such cases. It will be good as well to have a monitoring United Nations body overlooking such trials to avoid the innocent being convicted. Nigerians should seek solutions instead of making excuses and allowing the status quo to continue.

I have a feeling that Seun and/or his Family may be under threats. Please let us not demonize the man and judge him by his previous reputation for now.

Rotimi A:

Mr Larez, your designs are very good and I am in no doubt that you have a keen eye for detail. With regards to architectural designs one always has to exercise caution in the Nigerian real estate market. Some of your designs remind me of properties located at Nicon Town Lekki. Here you will find the typical sub-urban American style houses. In my own personal opinion which might be wrong I would suggest that your designs are more suited to private developments i.e. built to order (customized to one's taste). I don't know much about the Abuja market but here in Lagos it will be a challenge to successfully market such houses on a mass scale such as in an estate for various factors number one being pricing. Lagosians require homes that are affordable and correctly priced. If you could make modifications to your design and reduce the the size of the structure by eliminating un-necessary space, you could create a design that is more easily adaptable to the market.

Rotimi, you are indeed correct in your analysis. Homes that I have focused on are not for the mass markets. These are exclusive homes which in my contract stipulates the right to build only at my approved locations. The reason for this was to allow the original owner whom I worked with on the design to retain their exclusivity within their area. I should also mention that the real estate value of my typical homes after construction ranged from $650K to over $2M. This was my comfortable market. But I have also designed many homes that were mass constructed in the Atlanta / Dekalb, and surrounding areas within the city limits. The price range of these started around 240K.

In response to Larez, it seems by you exaggerating the topography of the site, it seems all the water will gather in that valley that the major road has been built in (I can't see the road name), this indicates that that major road is in danger of being flooded, not just during a freak weather incident, but repeatedly because of bad planning, if there isn't adequate drainage placed in this area, it'll be the norm. Thanks for the exercise.

What projects are you doing at the moment, I would like to read them to see if they are suitable for the site.

As for other posters, there is always a chance to become published onto the 'nigerian architecture' blog, with your idea and scheme towards a 'better' Nigeria. Engineering solutions are also welcome. Please check out the blog if you are unfamiliar with it.

Hi and long time!! Yes , that was the point of the excercise to know from exagerating the terrain, where low areas are. Been spending a lot of time on Nigerian Geology. I believe mining will change the paradigm in Nigeria if people will take time out to learn to do it properly. Just completed a preliminary feasibility study for mining and producing Barite. Would you like to buy shares in the company that will be setup for this? lol. Still going to places like Makurdi, Jalingo etc and climbing mountains and stuff to find mine-able minerals. This could be exciting you know?

This project will employ 248 Nigerians directly and probably at least 100 indirectly. They will be well compensated and the company will prove it cares. Can you shift from Architecture to mining? Industrial process planning could be fun too. You get to learn about all kinds of Mills, jigs etc, lol. Hope all is well with you. Cheers, my Friend.

Questions:

1. What is the footprint of each unit (in sq.m. please)

2. How many units do you propose in all?

3. How much land (in hectares please) do you reckon you'll need to make this a viable project?

Thanks.

26' X 86' Per Unit Front to back of Garage. End Unit Adds 3' extra for bay. This means of course that we add the front and rear set-backs. The Idea was to size them to fit in the standard lots of 120' deep. The most economical ARRANGEMENT SEEMS TO BE 9 units per block, but it might not be a good idea to exceed 6 Units per block. Contact me via email if interested.
