Nairaland / General / Before You Use Your UBA Mastercard Online, Read This! by Leadn(m): 8:21pm On Jul 26, 2015
Good evening folks, I'm not one to come online to spite an organisation but I think what I'm about to say would be useful for internet marketers, importers etc.

I recently started using a UBA account (early this year) I've always been a GTBank favourite, but then I learnt that UBA and a few other banks don't require a dorm account to receive wire transfers. As a blogger, I thought it was awesome, so I opened an account with UBA.

Fast-forward to around last week/ last two weeks, the USD - Naira rates became something of a problem as there were discrepancies in currency exchange rates. I made a transaction with my UBA MasterCard and was charged a whooping 242naira to a USD. As a blogger, I thought it was... well, good? since I was going to be paid in a few days time with expectancy of rate of about 220+ naira to 1USD. Sadly, wire transfer came in and I was paid an exchange rate of 196Naira to a USD.

I wasn't so pleased, but I was a bit curious if the exchange rate has dropped, so I made a purchase online immediately (renewed one of my domains), waited for the alert, it never came. Last night, the alert I was waiting for entered, and shockingly, UBA charged me a whooping 269.69naira for 1USD (I spent 6USD @ 1617.54 naira debited!)

Angry, I complained to them on Facebook and was told " Please be informed that the discrepancy in the rate is as a result of the instability of the exchange rate."

Summary of my epistle is UBA are ripping off Nigerians with this dollar-naira problem. Be wise, boycott using your UBA card for purchases online for now.

Regards,

Uche Charles...

Science/Technology / Selfie Craze! Man Takes Selfie With Rattle Snake, Gets Life-threatening Venom by Leadn(m): 1:06pm On Jul 26, 2015
So it’s the period of sporadic evolution of tech, and Selfies are among the top things in vogue now. We’ve seen the advent of selfie sticks to aid that perfect selfies, we’ve seen folks posing with selfie hands, guns and all sorts to make that perfect selfie, however, what we haven’t seen until just recently is someone posing with a wild, poisonous snake.
rattle snake
San Diego’s Todd Fassler wasn’t so keen on taking that perfect selfie with a cat or a dog, so he settled for his ‘pet’ – a rattlesnake he found in the bushes over a year ago, and apparently decided to keep it as a pet.

The said pet wasn’t feeling the selfie union and opted to give Mr Fassler a dose of it’s super poisonous venom. Thankfully, Mr Fassler was rushed to an area hospital where doctors had to use all of the anti-venom stored at two hospitals in order for Fassler to recover.

Fassler recently released the snake into the wild. And while he might not have been able to take a selfie that would have helped him remember his pet forever, at least he does have something that will always bring back the memory of his snake. That is the $153,161.25 hospital bill he incurred for a five-day stay.

Webmasters / Google Celebrates Special Olympics World Cup Games With A Doodle by Leadn(m): 9:38am On Jul 25, 2015
Today marks the start of the 47th Special Olympics World cup games, and Google is specially thrilled and honors the event with a Doodle.

google-doodle-celebrates-special-olympics-world-games-2015-275392.html
The special Olympics world cup games is scheduled to hold between 25th of July and run through till 2nd of August 2015 at Los Angeles in the U.S of A.

The event will witness 7,000 world-class athletes from 177 countries compete in 25 events in a celebration of athleticism, teamwork and inclusion. It is also a reminder of the universality of sport, an opportunity for athletes with disability to compete in one of humankind’s greatest traditions, Google writes.

“Doodle team lead Ryan Germick illustrated and animated today’s doodle inspired by the circle of inclusion, which represents the acceptance of all people with intellectual disabilities. It celebrates the athletes in these games, as well as those who support them — the friends and mentors who helped carry the Olympic torch from its origin in Athens, Greece to its temporary home in Los Angeles, California,” Google further explains.

This will also mark the biggest sports event to take place in Los Angeles since 1984.

Around 5,00,000 spectators are expected to come to cheer the athletes at the sporting event that will be held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Nigeria is among the countries participating in the event and participants have since departed for California.

I can date 5 girls all at once and lie to each of them that they are the best thing to happen to me since my birth... it's saddening.

I also have severe anger issues. Once angry, I can shatter anything I come in contact with, not forgetting I can really go berserk with words & fists... So NOPE!

Science/Technology / Top 5 Smartphones That Made It To Guinness World Records by Leadn(m): 10:44am On Jun 26, 2015
There are record makers and there are record breakers. As shocking as it would seem, these 5 smartphones entered the widely acclaimed Guiness World Records for being ‘ingenious’ and of-course the first to do / have what they did / had.

Before we stroll along, let’s take you back to what began the famous Guiness Book Of World records.
On 10 November 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, then marketing director of the Guinness Breweries, went on a shooting party in the North Slob, by the River Slaney in County Wexford, Ireland. Find it on Google Maps, it’s an amazing place. Anyway, after missing a shot at a golden plover [pics], the gentleman found himself in an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe, the golden plover or the red grouse [pics]?

In the heat of the moment, Sir Beaver realised that it was impossible to confirm in reference books (what they used before, you know, Wikipedia) whether or not the golden plover was Europe’s fastest game bird. Falling short on substance behind his educated argument, Beaver knew that there must be numerous other questions debated nightly in pubs throughout Ireland and abroad, but there was no book in the world with which to settle said arguments about records. Perhaps the noble sir knew little of the club law. But nevertheless, he gained a valuable idea! He realised then that a book supplying the answers to this sort of question might prove successful, and this is the short briefing on how the Guinness World Records were born.

So, there you have it. Now smartphones have joined the list of break-makers and breakers and here’s the top 5 smartphones who’s made and/or broken a record on the world records book.

1. LG G4 broke the record for world's longest "selfie relay chain"

2. Gionee Elife S5.1 became the thinnest smartphone for a while.

3. Oppo R5 crushed the Gionee Elife S5.1’s thinness record

4. HTC One set the world record for largest animated mobile phone mosaic

5. LG Optimus 2X got the Guinness treatment for… being a dual-core
