Business / NCC Finalises 9mobile Takeover by maol27(m): 6:01am On Jul 27, 2018
Indications have emerged that the Nigerian Communications Commission is in the final stages of reviewing the deal that will see investment firm, Teleology Holdings, take over 9mobile.

Teleology was picked as the preferred bidder for 9mobile in February, following a bid process arranged by Barclays Africa after a debt default forced the telecom firm’s lenders to step in.

According to Reuters, the deal is expected to close in about a week, as revealed by two sources with knowledge of the transaction, which has taken longer than initially expected.

One of the sources said the NCC was in the final stages of reviewing the deal before signing off Teleology’s takeover, adding that $301m in financing for the deal was in escrow with Afrexim bank.

Business / Kebbi Rice Farmers Lament Fertilizer Scarcity by maol27(m): 2:56am On Jul 23, 2018
Rice farmers in Kebbi State have expressed concerns over their inability to secure fertilizers for the rainy season, saying the shortage of the product will hamper their output.

A prominent rice farmer along the Dikku Road, Birnin-Kebbi, Alhaji Ibrahim Guluma, while speaking with our correspondent on the plight of the farmers, noted that despite their readiness to buy the product at the rate of N7,500 at the open market, it was not available.

Guluma, who has four hectares of rice farm, stated, “I could not secure fertilizer from the government this year, and I tried to buy from the open market, but it is not available.”

He noted that he usually harvested about 30 paddy bags of rice from his four hectares of rice farm for every rainy season, but said he was not sure if his output would surpass last year’s due to scarcity of fertilizers.

Business / Nigeria’s Inflation’ll Rise In Second Half – IMF by maol27(m): 3:21am On Jul 14, 2018
The International Monetary Fund on Friday said Nigeria’s inflation, which has been declining for more than a year, would increase in the second half of the year.

The IMF stated this in an emailed statement after a team led by the Senior Resident Representative and Mission Chief for Nigeria, Amine Mati, visited the country from June 27 to July 9 to discuss recent economic and financial developments, update macroeconomic projections, and review reform implementation.

The nation’s inflation rate dropped for the 16th consecutive month to 11.61 per cent in May from 13.34 per cent in April, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

“Nigeria’s inflation would pick up in the second half of 2018 as base effects dissipate and higher spending and supply constraints in agriculture put pressure on prices,” Mati said.

Celebrities / Jay-z And Beyoncé Are Now Worth A Combined $1.255 Billion -- And Counting by maol27(m): 7:58am On Jul 13, 2018
Entertainers can be prone to exaggeration, particularly when it comes to wealth. In 2012, Wiz Khalifa told Forbes he'd earn $100 million that year (he went on to make $9 million). Rick Ross titled his 2014 album Hood Billionaire (he is worth less than $100 million). And Donald Trump has been telling whoppers about his net worth to this publication since the early 1980s. But Beyoncé? She seems to be right on the money.

"My great-great-grandchildren already rich," the songstress explains on "Boss," the third track on Everything Is Love, her new album with husband Jay-Z. "That's a lot of brown children on your Forbes list."

Beyoncé and Jay-Z's descendants will indeed be wealthy: The couple is already worth an estimated $1.255 billion as of this week's launch of another Forbes list, America's Richest Self-Made Women, with Beyoncé's clocking in at $355 million to Jay-Z's $900 million.

The two superstars have built their fortune in different ways. Beyoncé tends to move more records and can draw larger crowds on her own than her husband, allowing her to frequently flirt with the $100 million mark in terms of pretax annual earnings. Jay-Z has created his empire by starting his own companies or buying pieces of others: He paid $56 million to purchase streaming service Tidal two years ago; Sprint's subsequent investment valued the company at $600 million.

On Tuesday, the CBN said it injected the sum of $210m into the interbank foreign exchange market to meet customers’ requests in various segments of the market.

The apex bank said it offered $100m to authorised dealers in the wholesale segment of the market, while the Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises segment got the sum of $55m.

Business / Why Nigeria Banks Aren’t Lending At Single Digit Interest Rate by maol27(m): 7:30am On Jul 13, 2018
The Deputy Governor, Economic Policy, Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Joseph Nnanna, on Thursday blamed the inability of Deposit Money Banks to lend at single digit interest rate on the attractiveness of treasury bills, an instrument used by the government to borrow from the money market.

He said this at a roundtable event on factoring financing held in Abuja on the sidelines of the African Export-Import Bank’s annual conference.

Nnana noted that with the government borrowing from banks at an average rate of 18 per cent, it would be difficult to achieve a single digit lending rate.

He called on the Federal Government to reduce its level of domestic borrowing so as to drive down the lending rate in the money market.

Nairaland / General / Nigeria May Cut Power Supply To Benin, Niger And Togo by maol27(m): 8:56am On Jul 11, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has joined operators in the power sector to call on international customers who receive electricity from Nigeria to either pay their bills or be disconnected.

Nigeria sells power to the Republics of Togo, Niger and Benin, and classifies the West African countries as international customers.

Officials at the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, told our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday that the international customers, who pay for the power they receive from Nigeria in dollars, owed the country, a development that had increased the financial indebtedness to the power generation companies.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, who, however, revealed that Buhari was working hard to ensure that the electricity debts by the country’s neighbours were cleared.

Business / Auditors To Get N8.7bn For Recovering N58bn Into Federation Account by maol27(m): 9:13am On Jun 20, 2018
Auditors who helped to recover N58bn into the Federation Account are to receive N8.7bn for their efforts, investigation has revealed.

The amount represents 15 per cent of the recovery, which the auditors helped the government to make from banks that failed to remit the money into the Federation Account.

The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission recently announced that the auditors helped it to recover N58bn, which the banks collecting revenues on behalf of the government failed to remit into the Federation Account.

Investigation by our correspondent showed that the RMAFC signed an agreement that allowed the auditors to receive 15 per cent of any amount they helped the government to recover from the defaulting banks.

The commission also announced that it had issued a demand notice to the banks for another N16.4bn that had yet to be recovered from those of them appointed to collect revenues on behalf of government revenue collecting agencies.

I've been living in the USA for the past 7 years. I still come to naija every year during the festive seasons.

Fact is Nigeria is not that bad. Only that Nigerian citizens are very greedy and are never satisfied. If you go to countries like Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania, Bangladesh, India, phillipines , the favelas of brazil etc , you'll see people living in squalor and abject poverty. So why complain when you're in a better situation? You complain of boko haram its worse with the Isis and Taliban of Pakistan and Afghanistan. You complain of kidnapping its worse with the pirates and marauders of somalia. You complain of poor electricity it's worse in countries like Senegal and Mozambique. You complain of crime its worse in countries like south Africa.
Una wahala too much infact wetin una want sef.

Instead of you to think of ways to develop your country you're here complaining . The same complain you dey complain for 1975 na still the same complaint in 2018. No new complaint other than bad governance , light, water , no money etc.
Your government have tried their best. They can't kill themselves. Not even Buhari. At least you go pity his old age.

Sports / How Much The FIFA World Cup Trophy Is Worth Revealed by maol27(m): 10:22am On Jun 19, 2018
In the 2018 FIFA World Cup taking place in Russia, 32 soccer teams with some of the world's highest paid athletes will be vying for an esteemed prize: the FIFA World Cup Trophy.

The World Cup trophy, specially created by Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga, is worth an estimated $20 million, according to USA Today.

First designed and crafted by Gazzaniga in 1974, the same trophy is awarded to the FIFA World Cup winning team every four years.

The trophy, which stands about 14.5 inches tall, is made of 13.5 pounds of 18-carat gold and resembles two athletes raising their arms up in victory while holding up the world. At the end of the World Cup final match, the trophy is presented to the winning team, which then gets its country name engraved on the trophy's base.

FIFA actually first awarded winners the Jules Rimet Cup in 1946, named after the World Cup founder. But following a series of tumultuous events, in which the trophy was hidden during World War II, stolen in England, permanently given to Brazil and stolen again in 1983, FIFA commissioned a new World Cup Trophy — the one that exists today.
