Health / 10 Facts About Mosquitoes You Never Knew by mariobobby(m): 1:04pm On Mar 12, 2016
1. Mosquitoes are the deadliest animals on Earth.
That's right, more deaths are associated with mosquitoes than any other animal on the planet.
Mosquitoes may carry any number of deadly diseases, including malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, and encephalitis. Mosquitoes also carry heartworm, which can be lethal to your dog.
2. Only female mosquitoes bite humans and animals; males feed on flower nectar.
Mosquitoes mean nothing personal when they take your blood. Female mosquitoes need protein for their eggs, and must take a blood meal in order to reproduce. Since males don't bear the burden of producing young, they'll avoid you completely and head for the flowers instead.
See Also: Effective Mosquito Control
And when not trying to produce eggs, females are happy to stick to nectar, too.
3. Some mosquitoes don't bite humans, preferring other hosts like amphibians or birds.
Not all mosquito species feed on people. Some mosquitoes specialize on other animals, and are no bother to us at all. Culiseta melanura , for example, bites birds almost exclusively, and rarely bites humans. Another mosquito species, Uranotaenia sapphirina, is known to feed on reptiles and amphibians.
4. Mosquitoes fly at speeds between 1 and 1.5 miles per hour.
That might sound fast, but in the insect world , mosquitoes are actually rather slow.
If a race were held between all the flying insects, nearly every other contestant would beat the pokey mosquito. Butterflies, locusts, and honey bees would all finish well ahead of the skeeter.
5. A mosquito's wings beat 300-600 times per second.
This would explain that irritating buzzing sound you hear just before a mosquito lands on you and bites.
6. Mosquito mates synchronize their wing beats to perform a lover's duet.
Scientists once thought that only male mosquitoes could hear the wing beats of their potential mates, but recent research on Aedes aegypti mosquitoes proved females listen for lovers, too. When the male and female meet, their buzzing synchronizes to the same speed.
7. Salt marsh mosquitoes may travel up to 100 miles from their larval breeding habitat.
Most mosquitoes emerge from their watery breeding ground and stay pretty close to home. But some, like the salt marsh mosquitoes, will fly lengthy distances to find a suitable place to live, with all the nectar and blood they could want to drink.
8. All mosquitoes require water to breed. Some species can breed in puddles left after a rainstorm.
Just a few inches of water is all it takes for a female to deposit her eggs. Tiny mosquito larva develop quickly in bird baths, roof gutters, and old tires dumped in vacant lots. If you want to keep mosquitoes under control around your home, you need to be vigilant about dumping any standing water every few days.
9. An adult mosquito may live 5-6 months.
Few probably make it that long, given our tendency to slap them silly when they land on us. But in the right circumstances, an adult mosquito has quite a long life expectancy, as bugs go.
10. Mosquitoes can detect carbon dioxide from 75 feet away.
Carbon dioxide, which humans and other animals produce, is the key signal to mosquitoes that a potential blood meal is near. They've developed a keen sensitivity to CO2 in the air. Once a female senses CO2 in the vicinity, she flies back and forth through the CO2 plume until she locates her victim .

Crime / Burundi On The Brink Of Civil War by mariobobby(m): 10:10pm On Dec 04, 2015
Burundi is on the brink of civil war and will need regional mediation to establish a peace process between the government and opposition to prevent further bloodshed, a US envoy said.

Thomas Perriello, the US special envoy for Africa’s Great Lakes region, said on Thursday that Burundi was “facing a real possibility of civil war,” though there is still “a window, no matter how small, to get a peace process going”.

“The most urgent thing is a regionally mediated dialogue that will deal with the crisis itself,” he said.

But regional efforts to cool Burundi’s crisis have stumbled, despite calls by the African Union and East African states for dialogue.

Perriello said the international community has kept a close watch on Burundi and the extension of sanctions and the preparation of a peacekeeping force are among the options.

“We’ve learned way too painfully from the past that you don’t want to wait until after a genocide has started to be doing things to prevent it from happening,” Perriello said.

The peace process, led by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and backed by the US and others, has so far failed to bring the two sides to the negotiating table.

TV/Movies / 10 Facts About The Titanic Ship That You Don't Know by mariobobby(m): 4:29am On Jan 24, 2015
You may already know that the Titanic
hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on the night
of April 14, 1912 and sunk just over two-
and-a-half hours later, but do you know
the following ten facts about the Titanic ?
1. Canceled Lifeboat Drill
Originally, a lifeboat drill was
scheduled to take place on board
the Titanic on April 14, 1912 - the
day the Titanic hit the iceberg.
However, for an unknown
reason, Captain Smith canceled
the drill. Many believe that had
the drill taken place, more lives
could have been saved.
2. Only Seconds
From the time the lookouts
sounded the alert, the officers on
the bridge had only 37 seconds to
react before the Titanic hit the
iceberg. In that time, First Officer
Murdoch ordered "hard a-
starboard" (which turned the
ship to port -- left). He also
ordered the engine room to put
the engines in reverse. The
Titanic did bank left, but it
wasn't quite enough.
3. The Titanic's Newspaper
The Titanic seemed to have
everything on board, including
its own newspaper. The Atlantic
Daily Bulletin was printed every
day on board the Titanic. The
newspaper included news,
advertisements, stock prices,
horse-racing results, society
gossip, and the day's menu.
4. Lifeboats Not Full
Not only were there not enough
lifeboats to save everyone on
board, most of the lifeboats that
were launched off the Titanic
were not filled to capacity. For
instance, the first lifeboat to
launch, Lifeboat 7 from the
starboard side, only carried 24
people, despite having a capacity
of 65 (two additional people later
transferred to Lifeboat 7 from
Lifeboat 5). However, it was
Lifeboat 1 that carried the fewest
people - only seven crew and five
passengers (a total of 12 people)
despite having a capacity for 40.
5. Only Two Bathtubs
Although most passengers had to
share bathrooms (only the two
promenade suites in first class
had private bathrooms), third
class had it rough with only two
bathtubs for more than 700
passengers.
6. Another Boat Was Closer for Rescue
When the Titanic began sending
out distress signals, the
Californian , rather than the
Carpathia, was the closest ship;
yet the Californian did not
respond until it was much too
late to help. At 12:45 a.m. on
April 15, 1912, crew members on
the Californian saw mysterious
lights in the sky (the distress
flares sent up from the Titanic)
and woke up their captain to tell
him about it. Unfortunately, the
captain issued no orders. Since
the ship's wireless operator had
already gone to bed, the
Californian was unaware of any
distress signals from the Titanic
until the morning, but by then
the Carpathia had already picked
up all the survivors. Many people
believe that if the Californian had
responded to the Titanic's pleas
for help, many more lives could
have been saved.
7. Two Dogs Rescued
With the order for women and
children first into the lifeboats,
plus the knowledge that there
were not enough lifeboats for
everyone on board the Titanic to
be saved, it is a bit surprising
that two dogs made it into the
lifeboats. Of the nine dogs on
board the Titanic, the two that
were rescued were a Pomeranian
and a Pekinese.
8. The Fourth Funnel
In what is now an iconic image,
the side view of the Titanic
clearly shows four cream and
black funnels. While three of
these released the steam from
the boilers, the fourth was just
for show. The designers thought
the ship would look more
impressive with four funnels
rather than three.
9. A Royal Mail Ship
The R.M.S. Titanic was a Royal
Mail Ship, a designation which
meant the Titanic was officially
responsible for delivering mail
for the British postal service. On
board the Titanic was a Sea Post
Office with five mail clerks (two
British and three American).
These mail clerks were
responsible for the 3,423 sacks of
mail (seven million individual
pieces of mail) on board the
Titanic. Interestingly, although no
mail has yet been recovered from
the wreck of the Titanic, if it
were, the U.S. Postal Service
would still try to deliver it (the
USPS because most of the mail
was being sent to the U.S.).
10. Corpses Recovered
On April 17, 1912, the day before
survivors of the Titanic disaster
reached New York, the Mackay-
Bennett was sent off from Halifax,
Nova Scotia to search for bodies.
On board the Mackay-Bennett
were embalming supplies, 40
embalmers, tons of ice, and 100
coffins. Although the Mackay-
Bennett found 306 bodies, 116 of
these were too badly damaged to
take all the way back to shore.
Attempts were made to identify
each body found. Additional
ships were also sent out to look
for bodies. In all, 328 bodies
were found, but 119 of these
were badly damaged and thus
were buried at sea.

Investment / 11 Things To Consider When Building A House by mariobobby(m): 10:03pm On Jan 22, 2015
If you love a project you should build a house. It
is the mother of all projects, and as with any big
project there are lots of things to consider, review
and coordinate. The list below is actually a list of
categories, within each category there are plenty of
decisions to make, but this list will give you the
big picture view you need to build a home.
1. Design
If you are planning to build a house you will need
a design. There are two routes to finding a good
design. The first is to find an architect or designer
that you like, the other is to shop for house plans
online. Design is very personal and what works for
your neighbor may not be right for you. Listen to
your gut and find a designer or plan that feels like
a fit. If it's not a fit, you will likely always feel that
something is out of whack.
2. Location
If you are building you either have a site or will be
shopping for a site. Whether it is the middle of an
urban neighborhood or in a rural area, make sure
the location is right for you, since it is something
that can't be changed. Make sure that it is near the
people and things that you want to be near. Being
close to people means you are much more likely
to see them and being near the things you need
means an easy commute, maybe even by bicycle.
3. Additional Structures
When looking for a house plan, think of additional
structures you may need and how they might fit on
your site. A garage, shed, carport, playhouse,
garden or pool will take space. Best to know what
additional structures might be in your future so
that you are sure you have enough room and can
reserve a spot.
4. Landscaping
Landscaping is one of the items that tends to fall to
the bottom of the priority list because it can always
be done later. When money is tight, as it often is in
a building project, landscaping is usually the last
thing on everyone's mind. The fact is that
landscaping can go a long way to helping your
new house feel like a home. Getting plants in the
ground, with irrigation if you need it, is the
finishing touch to a project. If money is tight,
consider starting with smaller plants, even if they
look tiny today they will be bigger next year and
the year after that. You may actually save money
by growing them to the larger size you might
otherwise have paid for.
5. Aging in place
Most of us would like to a ge gracefully and die at
some far off date. We imagine living in our own
homes and never having to move to a place that
offers assistance. For some of us, that fantasy isn't
reality because most homes aren't designed for
aging in place. A home that is built for aging in
place is easy to navigate and is in a location that
makes the daily experience of living easy, or a
least doable. Examples of easy navigation include
a house without stairs, and doorways that are wide
enough to let a wheelchair through. Things that
are external to your home that make living easier
might include being near a bus line or other forms
of public transportation, being near shopping and
entertainment, and having helpful neighbors.
Simple things can make a big difference.
6. Size
Houses come in all sizes from big McMansions to
tiny little huts. Most of us don't need or want
either, rather it's somewhere between. Of the two
extremes, there is a lot to be said for building a
smaller home . On the practical side it costs less to
build smaller. That means that being a slave to the
mortgage will end sooner than it would otherwise.
It might also allow you to buy that nicer lot that
you've had your eye on.
7. Budget
Building a house is expensive. No ifs, ands or
buts, it just is. Each construction project is unique
and things don't always go as planned. Consider
holding 10% of your total budget out of the "house
budget" for the unexpected. This will give you
some cushion and if all goes well it is 10% in your
pocket.
8. Find a Good Team
A good team is probably the most important thing
for a successful project. A good team will certainly
include your contractor, it can also include
designers and engineers. Make sure that you are
comfortable with all team members and they have
the right experience to build your new home.
Interview several team members to find the best fit
for you. Get recommendations and trust your gut.
9. Durability
Building a durable house costs more
money...initially. However, spending money up
front for good materials and a good builder who
understands how they should be put together will
save in fewer repairs down the road. A durable
house that lasts 100 years is a sustainable house.
10. Energy Efficiency
It is just as easy to build for energy efficiency as it
is to ignore it. Homes that are energy-efficient
save you money every day and are more
comfortable to live in. Terms to look for when
searching for a plan include net zero energy (a
house that makes as much energy as it uses over
the course of a year), high performance , and
passive house .
11. Bonus
This may not seem like a bonus, but it's offered in
the spirit of one. Ask yourself if your marriage or
partnership can handle a project this big. With
endless decisions to make, money on the line and
schedule over runs, building a home can get
stressful. Make sure you have a solid foundation,
that you can discuss money issues openly and that
you have mutual regard and respect for each
others decision making ability.
