Politics / Re: Are We Any Better Than The Leaders We Condemn ? by marvel10: 10:31am On Jun 04, 2012
The media would have to play a pivotal role in eradicating negative mindsets and corruption. Dora Akinyuli's re branding might have stood a chance but under the likes of Aondoakaa, it died a natural death.
My recommendations are:

1. Schools take up teaching students from the age of 4 (as has been started in the UK) their rights and their responsibilities. It could start with placing litter correctly in bins, brushing their teeth correctly etc

2. Those rights will have to be modified from the cave man times as up until last week, a female police officer had to request permission from her boss to get married.

3. We support the police boss in his exercise to cleanse the force and ask him to be open to suggestions from members of the public. This 'I will change a university's name' without consultation needs to go. Or else, democracy is doomed. There has to be a dedicated number/email address that will investigate reports from members of the public promptly regarding abuse from the police. It should not be managed by the police though...

4. Leadership within families should be yanked back from religion, back to the hands of parents, who should be encouraged to attend parenting courses as the challenges of modern age parenting is a lot more tedious than say in the 70s or 80s.
Politics / Re: Are We Any Better Than The Leaders We Condemn ? by marvel10: 10:10am On Jun 04, 2012
A recent comment renewed my feelings that bad parenting (leadership) is partly responsible for a high number of wrongs today. Some of my issues with bad parenting is the notion that if an elder, supervisor then heaven forbids CEO says something, then it is right. Everybody blames poverty. Please how do you miss what you don't have. How can a poor man be missing wealth, assuming he has never been rich before. You can dream, you can wish but miss it? That is special!
If you see the number of Nigerians, especially males that can't work unsupervised or without being micro managed, they lie all the time and for some strange reason, wouldn't own up to not knowing. So if I asked a worker to bring me brocolli for example from the fridge, he is happy to go back and forth 10 times with the wrong item. I am baffled that not only menial workers but graduates do this too. You would be amazed how many adults have been poorly parented. I remember my father correcting my grammar, replying a letter by sending me a copy of one I had written earlier, modifying mistakes in red ink(which used to irritate me) today, I sit and carry out lessons with my children. I do not pay any damn lesson teacher because my parents corrected me constantly.
Please, you are right. It is within. That nonsense about top down will not work. There are too many 'downs' to correct that it would take an eternity. But if the downs are getting it (cos it will take time)woe betide the 'top' that doesn't change...

I agree with Frosbel that corruption and a look from within will help the war towards corruption. The nation deserves the leader it gets. Over the last election period, I noted with shame and regret, women of substance donning their gele to welcome one dodgy person or the other, even though they knew they were sharing proceeds from the nation's purse. Do I take them seriously when they moan about GEJ? Nope! They were happy to collect money from PDP but voted ACN. I just don't understand some ppl.

@Freecocoa, I hear you. I can't feel bad about queues though. Fortunately, I have never had to bribe. They recognise me at the banks (you'd be amazed how retentive the customer service staff' memories can be when they have been dashed handsomely before) and I am in and out in minutes. Do you know why I don't give a damn? Because Nigerians do not know a damn thing about costing. They waste their lives queueing and waste other people's time in the process. Did you see the rubbernecks at the scene of the crash? They have little or no leisure so queueing and wasting time are a hobby and a pastime.
Travel / Re: Dana Airplane Crashed At Iju-Agbado, Ayinla Bus-Stop by marvel10: 7:05pm On Jun 03, 2012
Dana Air is owned by the Chagouris (Lebanese). It had been speculated for ages that they were fronts for IBB. If so, Karma has visited them. I hope they go under after compensation pay outs and leave aviation for people who have a real passion for flying, customer care etc
I also hope that Jimoh Ibrahim is taking note cos his bushness gets the best of him and he often forgets what he is competing for. After buying Nigerian Airways for a token, he is now supposed to be flying into Gatwick. They serve the international route better than the locals that make them what they are. He should be scrutinized. Where is Tinubu's airline? They just keep buying airlines...

Nigeria is not a cursed country. It never has been and never will be. It is the people who make it what it is. The chap who takes Ekene Dili Chukwu to Enugu. Wasn't that the same inept company that 40 young girls were robbed and some virgins gang ra.p.ed less than 3 months ago? The point is, accidents happen daily. Nigerians drink and drive, speed as if possessed by the devil, do not read signs and do not even have road signs but buy Bentleys, Range Rovers etc

Well, as gory as the images are, I think the captured images may help families of lost ones (well, those in Agege, at least). If there are not tv stations and the public got there b4 the police, then who would you believe cos I will not believe the govt. Remember what happened to AIT? The Naija govt go to such pains to hide the truth. I thank those who had the courage to film the scene as even looters would be recorded too.
Travel / Re: Dana Airplane Crashed At Iju-Agbado, Ayinla Bus-Stop by marvel10: 5:58pm On Jun 03, 2012
Well, males can travel by road with fear of armed robbers, accidents etc. For females, since Ogun State Police do SFA, the armed robbers seem to have so much time to rape the females. I would rather travel by air, even with the uncertainties. The planes have been bad for as long as I remember.
I am saddened to read readers comment about how bad their travels by Dana have been. You saw the post of the chap who reported a body in the gutter and the gusto he kept until the body was cleared. Nigerians NEVER complain. If someone even posted here on NL, I believe lives may have been saved. We have to stop keeping mum about everything. I blame the new Pentecostal Christianity attitude for the 'God will judge' complacent ways on nearly everything in that country. If you complain, they will say ah, this is Nigeria.
The confusing thing is, they run to the spot and are more proactive than the police, security, NEMA, journalists etc Which is why I want to know why they have no time to send an email to customer services.

Politics / Re: Abiola's Family, Oyegun Express Shock, Dissapointment At UNILAG Protests by marvel10: 8:04pm On May 30, 2012
GEJ loves to irritate his people!! I just wish Abiola's name wouldn't be dragged up time and time again. He would have fathered close to 1000 children by now and I am pleased he never made president of nigeria. I wouldn't be so miffed if they suggested Mobolaji Bank Anthony, a genuine philanthropist than that ugly mofo. Unilag should stay just so.
Properties / Re: Landlord Tests Lagos Tenancy Law, Ejects 18 Tenants by marvel10: 9:36pm On Apr 22, 2012
Useless Naija tenants. Cos of idiots like these that never pay up, landlords are seeking 2 yearly rent. In other parts of the world, ppl pay monthly rent. It is a disgrace that the government supports bad tenants. It takes sometimes up to 1 year to eject bad tenants. I personally would burn the house down. Nonsense! Does Fashola subsidise the cost of building a private property? Let him provide affordable housing for his peasants and then let us see what he does when they don't pay rent for 6months. I support the landlord.
Romance / Re: Can I show her this thread?: In Love With A Young Single Mother.. by marvel10: 5:21pm On Apr 08, 2012
Let's leave family, marriage and divorce for a minute. You have painted this lady to be intelligent and go getting but I am confused as to why a first time mother would leave her child with her mother in law whilst chasing a divorce from her son. That's the bit I don't understand. I am not involved so I read her as an opportunist. I truly would like this to have a fairy tale ending but.....
I admire your courage and what reads as pure love or infatuation but all this child in the middle and emotional baggage is not as easy as it seems o. My best friend's son is the nicest child you have ever met but was evil at best to her now husband when they met. Whilst he wanted his mum to get married, the reality of another male making a number of decisions irritated him a lot. Even I had to suggest boarding school to allow them some peace. He was terribly jealous of his step father. This wouldn't be your portion but it seems one sided now o.

Politics / Re: Do You Think Nigeria Can Actually Get Better? by marvel10: 8:28am On Apr 06, 2012
Of course it can get better. You weren't specific in what areas you are wishing it to get better. It has gotten better in the Telecoms sector and there are numerous small to medium sized companies that do well despite the crippling infrastructure.
Socially and morally, there are huge declines, if you look over the last 10 years, let alone 30 years. The Medical and Education sectors are also in a rut. That can get better with a Fashola type. Change need not take 1m people, just the right person, the right backer and the support.
In the interim, let us support those who do a good job. Nigerians are mean these days, they celebrate a successful persons fall and actually look forward to it. Religion has done more harm than good so all in all, it is getting better.
Crime / Re: Nigerian Beaten To Death In Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) by marvel10: 4:46pm On Apr 01, 2012
Mr Brown Jay, In the UK, children are being offered subjects that deal with teaching them about their basic rights. They are now being taught about people touching them up (before you offer your wise assumptions) some children are abused by their fathers and although rare, their mothers. Their siblings too.... If your own father abuses you intimately, how could you know if it is wrong or right?
That said. Just because you may have had a idyllic childhood doesn't mean you should assume everybody else has. The best way to go about things is to set the rules and from earlier on. I am not sure what you mean by the stealing nonsense. It is fair to say that anybody who resides in Nigeria has seen the coporal punishment meted to thieves which is plenty incentive to stay away from such deeds. You take so much for granted from your responses.

I believe it is up to the government in Nigeria to educate the male population about inappropriate se.xu.al behaviour. It must be made clear that most countries the world over will prosecute for making se.xu.al advances towards children, ra.pi.ng mi.nors, down.loa.ding chi.ld por.nog.ra.phy, hav.ing intimacy against the consent and of course ra.pe. Inappropriate behaviour include groping, flashing se.x.ual parts at people etc

Politics / Re: Al-mustapha Sentenced To Death By Hanging? by marvel10: 3:54am On Jan 31, 2012
I visited Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons on 3 occasions last year and was impressed with some of the new facilities such as the Tennis Courts and Library that had been installed by Al Mustapha. I was also chuffed to hear that all or most? of the mentally ill wards were under his personal and financial care. That had been done by him since his incaceration so did not think it was a PR stunt.

I was most affected by the sight of the inmates, whom were starving and begged visitors for food. So, unfortunately, I am unable to join the bandwagon of those who want his head off. I am not sure what contributions you make in your everyday lives to affect the lives of those around you. When you call for the death of Al Mustapha and put down BK for killing others, doesn't that make you a hypocrite?

I just don't feel the need to froth in the mouth over non issues. The issue here is Diezani but as busy bodies, you have to keep looking to justify your anger. Her son has NO business with you! He did not sign any contract with you and you don't explain what you do to him either.
Politics / Re: 13 Igbos Murdered In Mubi Were Killed By Their Kinsmen, Not Boko Haram! by marvel10: 8:05am On Jan 23, 2012
I wonder if all this shooting has something to do with the Army's presence in Lagos then, A food for thought!
I must say that I agree with Kobojunkie's attitude. Many situations in Nigeria get hijacked by dodgy sort so it wouldn't surprise me if the killing was non BH related. That said, I would rather put 25m Naira into intelligence based security than as rewards for such tragic matters. Governors, wisen up! GEJ can't be taking abuse for complacent Northern Governors. It is terribly unfair.
Politics / Re: Alison-madueke Double Standards: Photos Of Son’s Private Jet Lifestyle by marvel10: 9:37am On Jan 21, 2012
Ugonna, enjoy your life! You owe no explanation to Nigerians who have sat and allowed things to go so bad. They are on the warpath and would brainlessly engage the newly born of wealthy couples, let alone you.
That said, I trust you are not the young man who beat a lady in a Lagos nightclub sometime ago as that is neither clever nor humane.

There is very little you have done that I wouldn't do so I refuse to judge you, regardless of who your mother is. Perhaps when we get exposed to the level of debauchery that Nigerian born and bred kids of the rich and famous get up to, we would humble up.

Go get yours and do not abuse your opportunies to affect the lives of others. When you are done with raising money for your American causes, come home and use your opportunity and connections to raise money for the less privileged too. After all, your mum earns her money and tragically, notoriety from Nigeria too.

Politics / Re: Stop Moaning... Petrol Is 326.21 Naira a litre in the UK! by marvel10: 9:02am On Jan 03, 2012
How can't you compare the UK to Nigeria? Our currencies once traded 1GBP to 1NGN. If we have mismanaged things to such an extent today, whose fault is it? Of course, the OP!
7 years ago, some Brazillians would have argued the same thing. But, look! Today their economy has overtaken that of the UK. They are not a bunch of tax evading, verbally abusive, unruly, intellectually and physically lazy magpies. If we exported abuse and binding, we would be the leading nation.

This subsidy removal will affect EVERYBODY so I am for it.

Nigerians tend to be thick skinned at issues that they do not affect them directly so I am particularly pleased about this. When the cost of diesel was doubled only last year, people were muttering angrily but no talks of revolution. Just wait if you think the only security issue is with BH. With the number of sophisticated weapons in the country now, shei Lagos Police are going to be proactive about armed robbery. It will take more than dodgy road blocks.

POLLUTION

I am really pleased at the prospect of hopefully halving the number of cars on the roads in Lagos. I don't care for sentimentalism as I am sure people are dropping dead literally at the level of pollution churned by the number of cars (how roadworthy) day in, day out. If anything, I hope Fashola's metro is sped with so that we can hop on and off no more than 1 hour to most parts of Lagos.

Nigerians are too wasteful! I was mortified to find out that half of Grange's pupils (wonderful school in Ikeja, Lagos) commute from the Island on a daily basis. It is ridiculous! In most civilised countries, children living within a certain mileage (traffic and other factors considered) would be at an advantage over those Islanders. When driving back from Ikoyi on the 3rd Mainland Bridge, please assist me in counting the number of passengers in SUVs and fancy cars. You would find no more than 2 people in about 80% of these. Shocking! A number of companies in the UK offer their staff tax rebates for car sharers (usually up to 4 people). All your mates should chip in for fuel.

When the Island and Ikeja have 24 hour power as promised by St Fashola, there is always the electrical powered car for running short errands with.
Politics / Re: FG Set For Mass Recruitment Into Security Agencies by marvel10: 4:16pm On Dec 31, 2011
It is amazing how short our memories are. Only a few ago, a whole ship went missing from Lagos under the watchful eye of the Navy and other security agencies as the ship itself was a subject in the media and courts. I wondered then why Tinubu's administration did not pilot a CCTV system, given the high level of crime then. There is only so much Fashola can and should do because the issue is with continuity.
I support Fashola for a state police because by the time we are 'ripe' for one as GEJ feels, we may only have a population of 10. I am afraid the every man for himself approach may be necessary.
Politics / Re: FG Set For Mass Recruitment Into Security Agencies by marvel10: 3:57pm On Dec 31, 2011
Okay, so now that BH want to torch Abuja and Ikoyi, they want to mass recruit? Goodluck! With the flawed processes in just about everything, this is one organisation I hope succeeds. I will NEVER leave my safety in their hands. Bugger! Another desk at the Airports,
