Actress and fashion entrepreneur, Mercy Aigbe-Gentry, opens up on her career and misconceptions.... What projects are you currently working on? I have a yet-to-be released movie titled Victims for the first time. I am also producing an English-speaking movie. I will feature in the film even though I am famous for my roles in the Yoruba movie genre. Why did you decide to embark on the aforementioned project at this point in your career? I am a professional actress and I can choose to produce a French movie if all that is required of me is to learn how to speak the language. I am not one to jump at any project especially when I am not too sure about the intricacies. It took me four years to begin producing Yoruba movies because I wanted to be grounded in the industry. As a producer, I am also an investor and I would want to recoup my investment as well as make profit. I will feature a number of Yoruba actors and Nollywood stars in the film, which will be released later in the year. Why did you kick off your career in the Yoruba movie sector? I didn’t choose to be in the Yoruba movie sector. I started out in Nollywood and I featured in several soap operas and movies. My career took a different direction when a Yoruba film producer cast me in his movie titled Ara. The movie became a hit and I soon began getting scripts from other Yoruba filmmakers and I couldn’t turn them down because I had just launched my career. In no time, I became a household name in the Yoruba film genre. In between this time, I worked with Lancelot Oduwa-Imasuen in his movie titled The Other Side of the Coin. You recently spoke about Yoruba movie practitioners being discriminated against. Why do you think this is so? I really don’t know why and it has been on for a very long time. However, we have started to get better recognition unlike what obtained in the industry four years ago. The gap is already being bridged and I think it is only a matter of time. I think we Yoruba actors also need to let people know that we are also a part of Nollywood and demand to be respected like our English counterparts. Our works will speak for us at the end of the day. I think it is about time we are respected, so the gap that currently exists can be closed. Do you think the Yoruba movie genre has better actors? Our counterparts in the English genre have always had fantastic stories and actors. I think Nollywood should be one and devoid of any form of disparity or segregation. The term Nollywood in my opinion means movies made in Nigeria irrespective of the medium. I am also featuring in a Hausa movie which will be released soon. Why are actors in the Yoruba sector tagged illiterates? This is one area where I have a problem with people’s perception of Yoruba actors. Many people think we are uneducated and can’t speak good English. I think people are not informed, so whenever someone tells me they are not aware I speak proper English, I simply laugh it off. In the last few years, you have attained new heights in your career. Some of your fans are of the opinion that you no longer fit into the Yoruba genre. Some people write to me and request that I should feature in more English movies because they believe that only then will I gain more acceptance and recognition. My fans believe I’m not being appreciated in my sector. Will you eventually stop acting Yoruba movies? I can never stop acting Yoruba movies because that industry made me who I am today. As a matter of fact, a lot of people don’t know I am from Edo State. When I began featuring in Yoruba films, I wasn’t speaking the language flawlessly, so I had to learn on the job. My industry is very accommodating and that is why I would always be grateful to them for accepting me and giving me a platform to excel. I also produced a movie titled Osas in order to connect with my Benin roots. What roles can’t you take up even if the price is right? I can never act nude because it is against our culture and my beliefs. How supportive is your husband of your career? Whenever I am overwhelmed with my business, career and family, he is always there to encourage me. He always recommends that I keep pushing. Is he comfortable with the romantic scenes you take part in? Yes, he is and I actually kiss in my movies. I was already an actress before I met my husband and he goes through my scripts. Sometimes, he chastises for not kissing well in a movie. I could be on set for a week or more and he does not make an issue out of it. I know I married my friend and he is very understanding. How have you being able to keep your home? It hasn’t been easy and this is actually my second marriage. Before I got married to my present husband, I asked God to make this my second and last marriage because I want to stay married. Our marriage is under scrutiny all the time and a lot of people just want to find faults even when there are no faults. My previous marriage taught me to be more patient, tolerant and prayerful. What is the highpoint of your career? That would be winning the African Magic Viewers Choice Award for Best Indigenous Movie. The filmKomfo, won me the award in 2014. You dressed like a winner at the last AMVCA. Were you disappointed that you didn’t get an award? No, I wasn’t disappointed. I already felt like a winner because my movie, Victims, got a nomination and that is why I was dressed in a glamorous wear. The icing on the cake was the fact that one of my mentees was the overall winner in that particular category. I have always dreamt of a day when someone would clinch an award and mention my name as his or her mentor.I have always dreamt of impacting someone in the industry. When you get to a certain stage in your career, it takes the special grace of God to mentor a junior colleague. I feel that singular action is what makes you an icon. Tell us more about your AMVCA outfit that sent social media into frenzy? People haven’t stopped talking about my dress. So many people aren’t even aware that a young, creative Nigerian fashion designer made the outfit. We shopped for the fabric together, agreed on the style and God made it a hit. I arrived at the award venue with a team and a back-up dress even though we had settled on a dress. The outfit earned me more followers and some people have even requested that my designer make the exact dress for them as their second wedding outfit.

Girl films dad raping her to convince mom she was telling the truth about four years of abuse .... Woman, 18, told her mother of four years of abuse, but was not believed. In a horrifying incident, an 18-year-old girl filmed her own father raping her when she was all alone in their family house only to prove to her mother that she had been telling the truth for the last 4 years, Daily Mail reports. The girl had been trying to convince her mum for 4 years that her own father had been sexually assaulting her but the mother refused to believe her. The incident took place in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The victim finally decided to take matters into her own hands and when she was alone in her family house, she left her mobile phone in video mode when her 53-year-old father charged at her. The disgusting act was recorded. She handed over the recording to the police, who arrested the father. The man confessed to the crime and blamed his addiction to alcohol for his actions. The girl has demanded the maximum punishment for the man. MY OPINION *What a smart girl, parents should always try and listen to their kids ,The mum should have been the one to place a camera at home so she can confirm what her daughter said.and whats your opinion ?

A Singaporean couple were convicted on Wednesday of violating employment laws for starving their Philippine maid until her weight dropped to 29 kilograms (64 pounds). Trader Lim Choon Hong and his wife, Chong Sui Foon, both 47, admitted failing to provide enough food for a foreign domestic worker over a 15-month period. They will be sentenced at a later date. The offence is punishable by up to a year in jail plus a maximum fine of Sg$10,000 ($7,300). A district court heard that Thelma Oyasan Gawidan, 40, lost nearly 20 kg, shed hair and stopped menstruating while working for the couple at their condominium in the posh Orchard Road area. Gawidan was only allowed two meals a day, usually a few slices of white bread and small portions of instant noodles prepared by Chong. Even when Gawidan went with the family on a Hong Kong holiday, Chong made sure to pack white bread and instant noodles for her maid. Gawidan had no access to her mobile phone and was not allowed to go out on her own to buy food, court papers showed. About a year into her employment, she was made to use a bathroom next to the condominium's swimming pool whenever she had to relieve herself or take a shower, and had to be accompanied by a family member. She was only allowed to shower twice a week. Gawidan ran away in April 2014 and called a compatriot for help. She was taken to a migrant worker shelter which helped her file a complaint with the manpower ministry. Many Singapore households depend on foreign domestic help. In 2015 there were 231,500 foreign maids working in the affluent city-state, mostly from Indonesia and the Philippines. Lim and Chong will appear before the court again on April 22 after a psychiatric assessment of them is completed.

A Gulf national charged with killing his mother is standing trial in the Sharia Court of First Instance in Sharjah. While the Prosecution has charged the accused of murder, he confessed in court that he slit his mother’s throat with a knife in her apartment in Al Mamzar area,” reported ‘Emarat Al Youm’. The accused also justified his act saying he killed his 50-year-old mom because she was practising witchcraft. He learnt of his mom’s activities from his aunt residing in Lebanon and subsequently he discovered papers with strange writings and items from his mom’s home, he told the court. Further explaining his crime, he said that he slit her neck by dragging a knife twice from right to left. Meanwhile, the Prosecution said that medical reports confirm he is mentally stable. Requesting the court to award him the maximum punishment, the Prosecution said that not only did he murder his mom but continued living a normal life for 10 days while the body was at home. The case came to light last June when Al Bohirah police station received a call from a grocery in Al Mamzar alerting them of a customer who threatened them with a knife and refused to pay for the purchases. The person at the grocery told investigating cops that it was not the first time that customer had threatened them with a knife and evaded payment. Upon arresting the suspect, police discovered that he had no identification documents with him. So the cops accompanied him to his home. But there they were exposed to a foul smell and soon they discovered the body of his mom. Source; http://www.maureenihasee.com/2015/11/man-slits-moms-throat-for-practising.html |

An 18-month-old Saudi boy waited for his mother to go into the bedroom then got a super glue bottle from the drawer and squeezed it into the eye of his younger brother. Their father Atallah Al Anzi said he believes the boy, Sultan, did so because he is jealous of his new brother, who was born eight months ago along with a twin boy. The father posted a picture of the little boy showing glued was sprayed on his left eye before he was rushed to hospital for treatment. “Doctors bandaged my son’s eye for five days and assured me he is in good condition and will see by his eye again,” Anzi said, quoted by ‘Sada’ newspaper which did not mention where in Saudi Arabia he lives. Father posted a picture of the little boy showing glued was sprayed on his left eye.

A man missing for six days in a remote Australian desert in searing heat without water was found Tuesday after surviving by eating black ants, police said. Reg Foggerdy, 62, disappeared on October 7 heading to the Shooter's Shack camp near Laverton in the West Australian Goldfields, some 950 kilometres (600 miles) northeast of Perth, on a hunting trip. When he failed to return, family members raised the alarm and a search by police trackers finally found him 15 kilometres from where he went missing. Goldfields Police superintendent Andy Greatwood said Foggerdy had been sitting under the same tree for the last two days, with no water during his ordeal. "He was eating black ants, that's how he survived, so fantastic survival skills by him, and fantastic skills by our trackers who found him in an extremely remote location," he told the West Australian newspaper. "He was extremely dehydrated, a bit delusional, but we've administered first aid and rehydrated him and it's pleasing to say he is now sitting up and talking. "It was extremely hot, extremely remote, and most people probably wouldn't have survived." His relieved sister Christine Ogden, who said her brother was an experienced bushman, told ABC radio: "I'm going to get him to get a satellite phone." A woman in Kuwait was shocked when she she saw her husband with another woman in a shopping mall and fainted on the spot. The husband, who was also shocked, not only ran away, leaving his wife to be attended by the mall’s paramedics, but also fled from Kuwait. This incident went viral on social media. Many said that the husband’s reaction is worse than his shameful affair. Mubarak, a Kuwaiti man, said that no matter what the consequences, he should not left his wife in that condition and run away. “He should have expressed regret and begged her to forgive him. Not run away. He is a coward.” Abeer, a Kuwaiti woman, felt sorry for the wife. “I can imagine her shock. It must have been difficult for her to see her husband with another woman. How dare he cheat her and how dare he do it in a public place. He doesn’t deserve her and if I was in her place, I would never go back to him. She should seek divorce.” Noura, another Kuwaiti woman, said the incident shows that the husband is a mean person and that she deserves a better man. “Good that she found out what kind of person he is. She deserves a better husband, a real man, not this coward.” Husband not only ran away from mall and also left country 2 Likes 1 Share |

A federal jury on Monday convicted a man of murder for pushing his wife to her death off a cliff as they hiked in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park to celebrate their wedding anniversary, rejecting his claim that her fall was a tragic accident. It took the jury about 10 hours to find Harold Henthorn, 59, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of his second wife, a wealthy Mississippi native. She died after plummeting about 130 feet off a cliff in a remote, rocky area where the couple had been hiking on Sept. 29, 2012, their 12th wedding anniversary. Henthorn told investigators that his wife paused to take a photo of the view and fell face-first over the ledge. His attorney, Craig Truman, said prosecutors failed to prove he killed her. Prosecutors argued during a two-week trial that Henthorn carefully staged Toni Henthorn's death to look like an accident because he stood to benefit from her $4.7 million in life insurance policies, which she didn't know existed. They seized on Henthorn's inconsistent accounts of the fatal fall and said the evidence did not match his shifting stories. Henthorn shook his head when the judge polled the jury, and after the verdict was read, one of the jurors hugged Toni Henthorn's mother, Yvonne Bertolet. "That was very meaningful," Bertolet said. "Believe it or not I forgive him (Henthorn) for doing it. I feel for him and his family." After the jury was dismissed, applause erupted in the courtroom. "We are overjoyed with the verdict and relieved this won't happen to any other lady," said Barry Bertolet, Toni Henthorn's brother. "We don't have to worry anymore." Harold Henthorn, who faces a mandatory life term when he is sentenced Dec. 8, scouted the remote area of the popular park 75 miles north of Denver nine times before bringing his wife with him. He was searching for the "perfect place to murder someone," where there would be no witnesses and no chance of her surviving, prosecutor Suneeta Hazra said. Toni Henthorn, 50, wasn't an avid hiker, so it didn't make sense that she would have gone willingly into such dangerous terrain, investigators testified. A coroner said he could not determine whether she fell or was pushed, but he said he found no evidence that Harold Henthorn actually performed CPR on his wife, despite what he told dispatchers. And park rangers said Henthorn could not explain why he had a park map with an "X" drawn at the spot where his wife fell. Two jurors told The Associated Press that though some of the evidence was circumstantial, they were overwhelmingly convinced of Henthorn's guilt. Only one juror needed more time to analyze the evidence before making her decision, they said. Juror Kim Thiessen said it was the scope of the evidence, rather than just one piece, that secured her guilty verdict. "Some of it was circumstantial, but we were instructed to use our common sense," she said. Another juror, Marxy Zahn, told the AP the direct evidence supported the circumstantial evidence. http://www.maureenihasee.com/2015/09/man-pushes-wife-to-death-off-cliff.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=facebook

Former Nigerian reggae star Majek Fashek is presently in a rehabilitation center in Abuja. Recently, a Save Majek fund-raising campaign which was spearheaded by one of Majek’s backup singer in the 90s, Monica Omorodion Swaida was launched. The aim of the campaign was to raise enough funds which will then be used to send the legend to rehab. That campaign has now been called off as Warri billionaire, Ayiri Emami has taken over any bills that will be accrued as a result of the singer’s rehabilitation. There has been outrage in India following the arrest of dozens of couples at a number of Mumbai hotels last week – because they were unmarried. http://www.maureenihasee.com/2015/08/40-couples-dragged-out-of-hotels-by.html More than 40 couples were dragged out of their hotel rooms and taken to a nearby police station where they were held for several hours and some were even made to call their parents. Witnesses say police knocked on the doors to the hotel rooms during the Thursday afternoon raid, and arrested all couples found to be unmarried. Despite being in private hotel rooms, the couples were charged with ‘indecent behaviour in public’ and made to pay a fine of 1,200 rupees (£12). The police first insulted all of us in front of all the officers and the other couples and then forced us to call our parents and insulted and disgraced us in front of them,’ a witness told Mid-Day.com‘.They also made the parents feel guilty as if their children had committed some heinous crime.’ He added that they were taken to the police station around 5pm and many of them were allowed to go only by 10pm.’ A number of angry Mumbai citizens took to Twitter to express their feelings, using the hashtag #MumbaiPolice. 1 Like |
