Agriculture / Imota Rice Mill To Start Production 2019, Says LASG by Mc4larin: 6:10pm On May 09, 2018 |
The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said rice production would start at the Imota Rice Mill in Ikorodu by February 2019, with a production capacity of 32,000 tonnes per hour. The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ade Akinsanya, disclosed this during an inspection tour of the mill alongside other members of the State Executive Council. Akinsanya said that the entire area, covering 8,000 square metres, with a light industrial park, would create jobs for 250,000 people. He said the Rice Mill would also have a warehouse to accommodate 20,000 metric tonnes of rice. According to him, rice, in large quantity, will be available to residents of the state and other South-West states early next year, as the state government is stepping up work at the mill. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the team also inspected the ongoing project at the regional food market in Imota, where the Mile 12 Market and other markets in the environs would be relocated. Akinsanya said that the market would accommodate 5,000 stalls, 1000 capacity trucks and trailer park, with the first phase at 75 per cent completion. He said that the entire project was slated for delivery in September this year. NAN reports that the executive members also inspected ongoing work at the 2.7km Agbowa-Timberville road and the Timberville, where the saw millers at Oko-Baba, Ebute-Metta, are to be relocated in October. They also inspected the Odo Onosa/Ayandelu Housing Scheme. The traditional ruler of Ikosi-Ejinrin, Oba Aderibigbe Asunmo, commended the efforts of the state government on the Odo Onosa/Ayandelu Housing Scheme. Career / 6 Things You Should Never Share With Other People by Mc4larin: 10:00am On Sep 19, 2017 |
We all have that one friend that we can tell anything to and trust them with it. However, no matter how trustworthy the person is, you should never share these things with them or anyone else. We can get really close to our friends and even family. Humans naturally build trust with other individuals, and we all have the urge to share the things about our lives and thoughts with other people too. It is normal and healthy to share what has been going on in your head with other people, but there are some things that only you should know. It’s not that you have to keep these things a secret, but you just don’t need to share these things with other people. Your personal life is your personal life for a reason. Don’t make it someone else’s business when it shouldn’t involve other people. Goals You are much better off keeping your goals to yourself. This is because in the future they might be part of something you need to change. Additionally, our goals are forever changing and adapting as we go throughout life and you don’t want other people holding you to expectations that are unachievable. Your Personal Life One of the things that I personally hate the most is being involved in other people’s personal life. I cannot stand when my friends involve me in their drama that I have no business being in. Things of other people’s personal life begin stressing you out and you get too emotionally involved in each other’s lives. It causes additional problems because it forms a habit. Family Issues Everyone has family issues and we are basically all formed on the way we were raised. It has a heavy influence on the way we are today, and you don’t want other people taking advantage of that. Plus, when people know your personal drama they tend to just you based off of it. Good Deeds Everyone should perform good deeds throughout the day. The world will change with one random act of kindness at a time. However, when we share the good things we do with other people it might make them feel compelled to do something better. It comes to a point where people are constantly trying to outdo you and they think you are bragging about yourself. Material Belongings Just like the good deeds, if you ever talk about your materialistic objects it makes people think you are bragging about yourself. It causes other people to be more inclined to brag about their belongings to you, and it isn’t a healthy relationship trait to have. Finances You should always keep your finances and money related subjects to yourself. Other people might use your finances to assure themselves that you can give to them. People might even go to lengths of expecting it if they know you have it. Any extra money should always be saved, don’t forget that. Business / Update: Construction Work On-going At New Mile 12 Market In Imota by Mc4larin: 1:45pm On Sep 15, 2017 |
In line with the plans of Lagos state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to built a new world-class standard market in Imota Local Council Development Area by relocating the 30 years old, biggest food and perishable goods market in west Africa, popularly called Mile 12 market to the community in 2016. The construction work that is on-going at the new relocation site of Mile 12 market in Imota community, Ikorodu has taken a new phase of development. It would be recall that the relocation of Mile 12 market to Imota was birthed following the March crisis that engulfed the Agiliti/Maidan Orile community in Mile 12, in which many people were killed and even more wounded. A number of buildings were razed during the crisis, which led the government to close the market and impose a curfew on the area by the State government. Below are pictures from the ongoing construction work at the new Mile12 market in Imota, Ikorodu division of Lagos State. Business / KPMG Slapped With $6.2m Fine Over Oil Company Audit Errors by Mc4larin: 12:24pm On Aug 17, 2017 |
Miller Energy Resources had overvalued certain assets by more than 100 times © Bloomberg August 15, 2017 6:23 pm by Hannah Murphy KPMG has been slapped with a fine of more than $6.2m by the US Securities and Exchanges Commission after it signed off the audit of an oil and gas company that had overvalued certain assets by more than 100 times. The SEC said on Tuesday that shortcomings in KPMG’s audit of Miller Energy Resources, a Tennessee-based oil and gas company, meant investors were “misinformed about the energy company’s value”. KPMG was hired as an external auditor for Miller Energy in 2011 and gave a positive “unqualified” report — despite the fact the company had “grossly overstated” how much some of its oil and gas assets were worth, the SEC said. The announcement follows an SEC investigation of Miller Energy that found the company had valued at $480m its Alaskan oil wells purchased for less than $5m. The estimate, which the SEC deemed fraudulent, helped transform a penny stock into a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The SEC last year settled accounting fraud charges with the chief executive of Miller Energy Resources’ Alaskan subsidiary, the company’s chief financial officer and its external accountant. The KPMG case is part of an international push to improve the quality of external audits. The “big four” accountancy firms — KPMG, EY, PwC and Deloitte — have all been hit by accounting scandals in the past 12 months. According to the SEC order, KPMG did not fully assess the risks of taking on Miller Energy as a client and did not adequately staff the audit. Their audit failed to take into account the overvaluation of the Alaskan wells and to detect that certain fixed assets were counted twice in the company’s valuation, it said. “Auditing firms must fully comprehend the industries of their clients,” said Walter E Jospin, Director of the SEC’s Atlanta Regional Office. “KPMG retained a new client and failed to grasp how it valued oil and gas properties, resulting in investors being misinformed that properties purchased for less than $5m were worth a half-billion dollars.” KPMG did not admit or deny the findings but agreed to be censured and pay a $1m penalty as well as $4.7m in all the audit fees it had received from Miller Energy plus interest costs. The auditor also agreed to improve its audit quality control, according to the SEC. “This matter is related to audit work performed in 2011,” KPMG said, adding that the firm was “committed to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and quality, and we have fully co-operated with our regulators to reach a resolution”. John Riordan, the KPMG partner who was in charge of auditing Miller Energy, also agreed to settle charges against him, the SEC said. Business / Candido Joao Da Rocha: Nigeria's First Millionaire by Mc4larin: 3:07pm On Jun 30, 2017 |
Have you ever asked any of your parents for money, especially continuously, and they gave you this reply: “Do you think I’m da Rocha?” Well, I experienced it and growing up, I never knew the meaning of the statement, until I came across a book a friend gave me, when I stumbled on the name “Candido da Rocha”. He was a rich man who would, from the balcony of his one-storey building, throw down coins to children who would, in a tangle of bodies and flapping hands, struggle for them. So, I remembered vividly why my parents denies being “a da Rocha” anytime I ask for monies I don’t literally need as a child. Also known as Nigeria’s first millionaire, he was a rich entrepreneur, businessman, landowner and creditor who owned Water House or Casa d’Agua on Kakawa Street, Lagos Island, Lagos. It was named Water House because it was the first and only house in Lagos in those days to have a borehole and in turn sell water to the residents. Candido da Rocha, a native of Ilesha, present day, Osun State, was born to the family of Joao Esan da Rocha, who was captured as a slave when he was 10 years old on his way to school in Ilesha. Candido was born in the Bahia region of Brazil. His mother was Angelica Josephina da Rocha. His father returned to Lagos, Nigeria in the 1870’s where he built his wealth and passed it to his son, Candido. Due to his wealth, his friend, Herbert Macaulay, nominated him as a candidate in one of the elections of the time. And when da Rocha met the electorate, he told them: “I am Candido da Rocha, your candidate into the House. Vote for me if you like. And if you don’t, all well and good.” That statement ended his sojourn in politics as he lost the elections with acquiring just 20 votes. Indeed, da Rocha was a very modest and generous capitalist. During the Second World War (1939 - 1945), when the authorities of Kings College were looking for a place to relocate the students in the boarding house – among whom were Tiamiyu Bello-Osagie, who would become one of Nigeria’s most celebrated gynaecologists; Adenekan Ademola, son of Nigeria’s first indigenous Chief Justice, Adetokunbo Ademola; Dapo Aderemi, son of Sir Adesoji Aderemi, the legendary Onni of Ile-Ife – da Rocha volunteered his Bonanza Hotel on Customs Street, Lagos, and did not collect a dime for the period it was used. Even after the war, when government asked influential Nigerians to contribute to the rehabilitations fund, he made substantial donations and he instructed that the amount should not be disclosed to the public. Despite his wealth and political clout, no street in Lagos is named after him. Candido da Rocha died in 1959 and his remains lies at the Ikoyi Cemetery Credits: Ayomide Akinbode Candido Joao Da Rocha ( 1860 - March 11, 1959)[1][2] was a Nigerian businessman, landowner and creditor who owned Water House on Kakawa Street, Lagos Island, Lagos, and was the proprietor of the now defunct Bonanza Hotel in Lagos. Da Rocha, a native of Ilesha, was born to the family of Joao Esan Da Rocha, a former slave;[3] his father was 10 years old when he was captured as a slave in about 1840 and Candido was born in the Bahia region of Brazil.[4] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Darocha_Esan.jpg 60 Likes 10 Shares

Politics / Senators Who Say Nothing, And Do Nothing At The National Assembly by Mc4larin: 4:54pm On Jun 08, 2017 |
The Senate is one of the chambers in Nigeria’s bicameral legislature, the National Assembly. The National Assembly is the nation’s highest law-making body, whose power to make laws is summarized in chapter one, section four of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, as amended. Sections 47- 49 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, states inter that “There shall be a National Assembly (NASS) for the federation which shall consist of two chambers: the Senate and the House of Representatives.” The Senate is headed by the President of the Senate, assisted by the Deputy President of the Senate. These Presiding officers serve as political heads. There are one hundred and nine members in the Senate representing 109 senatorial districts in the country. Senatorial Districts are evenly distributed among the thirty six states with each state having three senatorial districts, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja has just one senatorial district. Since 1999, when Nigeria returned to democracy, after many years of military rule, the Senate has played an integral role in contributing to the growth of the nation’s political space. Since that time, the nation has had five Senates. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), held sway for Sixteen, out of the eighteen years since the return of the country to democracy. The All Progressives Congress (APC), only took over in 2015, after securing majority seats. Since it took over however, the Senate has been inundated with a number of controversies. Despite the boisterous posture of the current Senate, some lawmakers, are perceived to have performed below the bar, while many others have completely gone into oblivion, by consistently missing sittings, both in the chamber and at the committee levels. Below are some of the lawmakers. David Mark David Alechenu Bonaventure Mark, was born in 1948. He is a retired Army Brigadier General. Prior to his political career, Mark served as a military governor of Niger State and was a former Minister of Communication. Mark is the longest serving lawmaker in Nigeria’s political history. He has been in the Senate since 1999. After presiding over the affairs of the Senate for eight years as President, Senator Mark has suddenly resorted to keeping a low profile at the Red Chamber, since his fourth reelection to represent Benue South Senatorial District. He manned the Senate president’s seat between June 2007 and June 2015. Following the failure of his party, (the PDP) to secure the majority number of seats needed to retain his position as Senate President, Mark has gone into political obscurity. Senator Mark’s frequent absence and sudden silence in the Red Chamber, assumed a worrisome dimension during the well-reported confirmation hearing of ministers-designate in October 2015. Throughout the duration of the screening exercise, Mark maintained a loud silence and refused to participate. Section 63 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), provides that the Senate and the House of Representatives shall each sit for not less than 181 days in a year. This provision is applicable to lawmakers who are also expected to fulfill this constitutional obligation. Senator Mark’s name was conspicuously omitted when the Senate president, Bukola Saraki announced the names of the various standing committee chairmen in late 2015. Ripples Nigeria observed that since the emergence of Saraki as Senate President on June 9th, Senator Mark has been keeping mum and maintaining a solitary posture among his colleagues. Unlike his colleagues that participated actively since the PDP lost its majority seats to the ruling APC, Mark has not uttered a word on the floor of the Senate, even as he has not contributed to debates on pressing issues in the country. At the peak of the massacre of natives of Agatu, in his senatorial district, Mark refused to move a motion on the floor of the Senate to draw the attention of lawmakers to it. Instead, he resorted to issuance of press releases. Similarly, unlike his colleagues that frequently move from seat to seat to exchange pleasantries and friendly banters with other lawmakers on the floor of the Red Chamber before commencement of sittings, our correspondent has observed that Mark is always confined to his seat the few times he has attended plenary. Beyond his defeaning silence, it has equally been observed that Mark has abandoned the reserved seat meant for him as the longest serving Senator in the chamber. At the Senate, the sitting arrangement of the Senators is usually based on their ranking. For instance, a high ranking Senator sits after the majority or minority leader. This depends on the lawmaker’s party affiliation. Instead, Mark sits at the last row on the side where the seats of Senators who are of the PDP are located. He is the last Senator to enter the chamber whenever he attends and the first to exit, long before the end of the day’s plenary. Again, unlike the other lawmakers, Mark enters the chambers through the back door and always in company of two policemen and few aides. He boycotts the front door, apparently to avoid probing eyes of onlookers and security checks. He has not attended one committee meeting, sponsored a bill, moved a motion or seconded any. He does not belong to any committee and neither a chairman or a deputy of any. Buruji Kashamu Buruji Kashamu was born on the 19th of May 1958. He is a Senator from Ogun State. He represents Ogun East in the current 8th National Assembly. Senator Kashamu is the vice chairman of the Senate Committee on States and Local Government. Like Senator Mark, Kashamu is a member of the opposition PDP. He seldom attends plenary and does not contribute to bills or motions on the floor of the Senate. Apart from Senator Mark, Kashamu is another Senator who has neither raised any motion, sponsored a bill or seconded any since he was sworn-in in June, 2015. Kashamu’s woes in the Senate, have been further compounded by his running battle with the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). He is currently fighting the battle of his life, to prevent the NDLEA from extraditing him to the United States of America for trial. Occasionally, he attends committee meetings, but avoids the prying eyes of the media. He barely grants press interviews and abhors any form of controversies with his colleagues. Reprieve came his way recently, when the Senate ordered the NDLEA and other security agencies not to extradite him to the United States of America until all court processes concerning the matter are resolved. The Senate, in arriving at the decision, noted that the NDLEA and the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) have been orchestrating plans to arrest and take Senator Kashamu to the United States of America over alleged drug trafficking offences. Jonah Jang Senator Jonah David Jang is a retired Air Commodore. Officially, he was born on the 13th of March 1944. He was the Governor of Plateau State from 2007 to 2015. He had previously served as Military Governor of Benue and Gongola sTate’s. He was elected a Senator in 2015 to represent Plateau North in the Senate. Although he has sponsored some motions in the Senate, he is however hampered by his old age. Sometimes, he dozes off on the floor of the Senate, while the day’s legislative business is still ongoing. He is a regular face in the chamber, but one of the few inactive. He seldom attends committee meetings and often comes to the chamber late. Philip Gyunka Nasarawa North senator, Philip Gyunka. He is not an absentee lawmaker. He is however on the idle side. He rarely sponsors motions, bills or make contributions during debates on the floor. He is unpopular within the circle of lawmakers. Gershom Bassey Senator Gershom Bassey, is the vice chairman of the Senate committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream). He represents Cross River South Senatorial District. Taken on a one on one interaction, Senator Bassey exudes an uncommon intelligence. He is deep and vast on any issue. However, he is not active on the floor. He hardly sponsors bills or motions. At the committee level, he is a brain box. He played a critical role when the committee worked on the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB). Others Other Senators who barely make contributions on the floor of the Senate are Nelson Effiong (Akwa Ibom South), Jeremiah Useni (Plateau South), Joshua Dariye (Plateau Central), Abubakar Sani Danladi (Taraba North), Bashir Marafa (Taraba Central), Mustapha Sani (Niger South) and Tijjani Yahaya Kaura (Zamfara North), among others. https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/senators-who-say-nothing-and-do-nothing-at-the-national-assembly/
