Politics / 2023: Compensate Igbos With Presidential Ticket, Igbo Group Tells PDP. by mighty2: 2:20pm On Apr 15, 2022
Jos – A pan Igbo think-tank, Izu Umunna Cultural Association has challenged the People’s Democratic Party, PDP to reciprocate the support the Igbos have been giving the Party since its inception and zone the 2023 Presidential seat to the South East region of the country.
The group which is an affiliate of the Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo maintained the Party’s constitution recognizes
zoning hence the Party should tread the path of honor and adhere to the time tested policy for the sake of equity and fairness.
In a statement issued in Jos and signed by the group’s President, Dr. Ugo Ihekuna, and Secretary, Dr. Elvis Chukwu, they insisted that the South East is the only region that has never produced an Executive President and the dalliance with PDP since its inception has not added much to their political lot.
The statement reads, “… In line with the thinking of Ohanaeze on this issues.., PDP must zone the
Presidential ticket to the Southeast for several reasons. The Igbos have consistently supported the PDP since its inception in 1999 and have paid a heavy price for this unalloyed support and loyalty. Even when we had a most eligible candidate in the person of late Chief ALEX Ekwueme, a foundation member of the Party. His ambition was thwarted by some politicians who have owned up to this in their various interviews…
“Igbo made that sacrifice for peace, equity, fairness, and justice to prevail in the 1999 elections to bring into the fold the Southwest region who felt cheated by the June, 12 saga. By political history and reality, the Southeast is the only region that has never produced an Executive President/Executive Leader…
“It is lack of equity, justice and fairness that the Igbos have been heavily marginalized in the political, social and economic scheme of things over the years in the mainstream Nigeria State e.g siting of key industrial, infrastructure, even maintenance of federal roads/railway lines…
“The PDP Constitution recognizes zoning as a cardinal feature of the distribution of offices/positions and the Party has implemented this policy diligently…, PDP should instead tread the path of honour, justice, equity, and fairness by adhering to their time tested policy of zoning as enshrined in their constitution.”

Politics / 2023: Yakasai, Sani Fault Kperoogi’s Call For Igbo Presidency by mighty2: 5:26am On Apr 13, 2022
Elder statesman, Tanko Yakasai, and former Secretary General, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Anthony Sani, have chided Professor of Journalism, Farooq Kperoogi, over his call for the election of a president of Igbo extraction to ensure peaceful co-existence among Nigerians of diverse ethnic nationalities.

Kperoogi had recently advocated the election of a President of Igbo extraction in 2023 as a possible solution to the disunity in the country.

The elder statesmen in a joint statement argued that the Presidency of any country is a product of deep-seated and extensive negotiation, rather than a mere wish by a people or group.

The statement read in part: “There can be no caveat with the significance of the submissions by Farooq Kperoogi, which he considers as needed to bring about the desired unity, harmony and peaceful coexistence that is sine qua non for meaningful socio-economic development of Nigeria. This is because a diverse country as Nigeria, tends to be fissiparous and constantly pulled in different directions by centrifugal forces.

“It is against this backdrop, that Nigeria has instituted many policies like quota system of admissions, and federal character in distribution of access to national employment, projects and major contracts, for the expressed purpose of promoting sense of belonging in the polity. This comes with inclusiveness of the diverse people in the belief that it is very possible to make the most of our God given diversity, thereby ensuring that every segment of the nation is given a true sense of belonging.”

According to them, “similar countries have also attempted to introduce policies with the objective of nation binding. For example, Ethiopia, which has never been colonized, practices ethnic based federalism, yet it has prevalent challenges of nation building.
.“Somalia, a country with only a few ethnic groups and predominantly singular faith, faces the challenges of nation building. Lebanon, on the other hand, has policies for balance of its religious diversity. Where the Christians produce the President, the Sunni would produce the Prime Minister, and the Shi’ite would produce the Speaker. Yet, they have governance challenges. All these go to show that, the tasks of nation building, go beyond mere balancing of public offices as an end in itself.

“All these are also a testimony to the fact that, though politics goes beyond ideals, it also includes who gets what, how and when, because it is driven by group interest, group goal, group coherence, group cohesion and even group conspiracy.

“Good governance is an art of balancing competing demands amongst not only constituents but also among socio-economic sectors; and what unites a nation, as they constitute national ideals and shared values.”

They disagreed with the notion that Igbo people have been marginalized over the years, saying “both the military and democratic governments have given Igbo people fair representations in the federal government and its agencies, such as Vice President, Senate Presidents, Speakers, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Coordinating Ministers, Service Chiefs, Governors of Central Bank of Nigeria , CBN and chairman of the ruling party.”

The statement continued: “This solid integration of the Igbo people into the Nigeria affairs had enabled them to settle unperturbed in various parts of the country, giving them the unlimited latitude to pursue their business activities, which currently run into substantial net-worth.

“Similarly, there are projects situated by the federal government of Nigeria (in pursuance of policy of Reconstruction) in Igbo land (particularly the construction of the second Niger Bridge) to amplify and demonstrate government’s concern for the South-Eastern region.
Conversely, when the Igbos threaten to leave Nigeria, if an Igbo President does not emerge in 2023; one wonders the wisdom and the basis of this agitation without facts and figures to justify the intuition.

“Igbo people like any other Nigerians, are entitled to contest for the office of the President of the nation under the current multiparty democracy. To that end, they are expected to devise their winning game plans and use that to convince the Nigerian electorates to vote for one of their own.”

Politics / Why South-East Should Produce Nigeria’s President – Doyin Okupe Writes APC, PDP by mighty2: 5:52am On Apr 11, 2022
A former aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has advised that allowing the South-East to produce the next Nigerian president would “end Civil War forever”.

He said this in an open letter addressed to the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party.

According to him, the South-East has not produced a president in the history of Nigeria.
His request came a few after presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party from the South-East demanded that the party’s presidential ticket for 2023 should be zoned to their area.

The aspirants are Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Mr Peter Obi, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa and Dr Nwachukwu Anakwenze.

The open letter read, “In the wake of the National crisis following the deaths of Chief MKO Abiola and Gen Sanni Abacha, very notable leaders in the country especially from the North and majorly of military background came together and decided to assuage the South-West and ensure national unity and stability, the south-est must be allowed to occupy the position of President in the country.

“And so it happened that the two leading political platforms at that time chose their presidential candidates from the South-West. By so doing, a major national concession was made and inevitably and democratically a Yoruba man, Olusegun Obasanjo became the president of Nigeria.

“In all the schemings and persuasions that went on behind the scenes nationally, the Yorubas did not participate. In fact, mainstream Yoruba took a hard-line position which was even antithetical to the stabilising concessionary process that was underway.
Today Nigeria stands at a similar crossroads.

“The fact of Igbo marginalisation and political oppression is self-evident.

Political parties will in a few weeks elect their presidential flagbearers. Many arguments for and against Igbo presidency, power rotation and merit and demerits if zoning are rife in our polity.

“In all this, the guiding philosophy ought to be, what is true, what is just and what is equitable? Rather

what we have are puerile and self-serving propositions and assertions.
“It is the truth that the established convention is that power must rotate between the North and the South.

Not between the zones. Hence a President of northern extraction follows that of Southern extraction and vice versa. Any consideration outside of this is foul and untrue.
“It is just that after President Buhari, power must come to the south. Any argument against this is inimical to the unity and stability of our nation.

“It is equitable that once the above stands and power is conceded to the south, the next president must come from the South East. This is because in the South only the southeast is yet to produce a civilian president.

“Fellow Nigerians, let us come together as a fair and just nation that we are. Let us concession the presidency to the southeast in 2023 and decisively end the Nigerian Civil War forever.”

Politics / Real Fight For Biafra Restoration To Commence Soon – IPOB by mighty2: 1:52pm On Apr 10, 2022
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has described as laughable and disgraceful a plot by the DSS, Army, Police, NSCDC in partnership with some few civil society groups to peddle lies and false information against the group.
The group, in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said the plot was uncovered by its intelligence unit, vowing to expose and disgrace them.
It further accused the Nigerian government and its security agencies of being behind the killings and insecurity in Nigeria, urging its media teams to get ready for the real fight for Biafra restoration projects.
The statement reads in part, “The M.Branch uncovered the meeting where agreement and MOU were signed with civil society groups and some human rights groups except Intersocity group and Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch. The agreement was reached to tell lies against the freedom fighting movement championing the liberation of the people of Biafra.
“IPOB intelligence unit uncovered this evil meeting attended by faceless human rights and civil society groups who agreed to peddle falsehood against IPOB across the world but IPOB family will expose and disgrace them.”
“Amnesty International and Intersocity group were deliberately excluded from the meeting because the organisers know that these transparent rights groups would not key into their wicked plans to be telling lies.
“We are waiting for them and their lies because they will regret their decision and agreement soon. IPOB will not relent in exposing them to the world. We are urging IPOB media teams to get ready because the real fight for Biafra restoration projects is about to begin, and everybody will be ready to tell the world the truth about IPOB activities.
“The Nigerian government and its security agencies are behind the killings and insecurity in Nigeria. They are only trying to use it to tag IPOB as terror group but they will not succeed because the world knows that we are not terrorists. If we were terrorists, we cannot maintain our presence in over 100 nations.”
