Hi africanboy,
Downloading the jdk could be stressful. The best way out is to use Sun Download Manager
rhttp://www.sun.com/download/sdm/index.xml,
as recommended by Sun. Install it. It's very easy to use. You can get jdk 5.0 from Sun's download center.
http://192.18.108.138/ECom/EComTicketServlet/BEGIN91AB276373D865C48A4D08360C002572/-21474648/1361497635/1/681986/681818/1361497635/2ts+/westCoastFSEND/jdk-1.5.0_06-oth-JPR/jdk-1.5.0_06-oth-JPR:2/jdk-1_5_0_06-windows-i586-p.exe
The latest version of jdk is 6.0 but it's still at beta stage. i don't advice you to go for it now. May be later. If you still have any problems, please let me know.

Bye for now

Thanks for the links. All the same. i hope to work on a project after my exams. Presently, am using the Sun App Server 9.0 (Beta) and Java EE 5.
Lot of differences in terms of development and deployment and the support for web service. I strongly believe that sooner or later, one will need to upgrade. So my target is for the beta version of the exam and a way of keeping myself updated with current development in java. For a design pattarn, am roughing my hands and head out with Struts 1.2.8. As you know it's just a glorified Front Controller.
More gist after my exams

Hi sbucareer,
Long time. Well thanks for your advice. Have been getting my hands real dirty with EJB and related technologies. Hope to hit
the SCBCD exams by this weekend and may be web service next.
On the java issue, most guys down here strongly feel java is out of place, and i think the problem has to do with the standard of
available training facilities. Most guys i know complain of java been slow. But take a look at the improvement from java 1.4 to 5.0(Tiger)
and the new 6.0(Mustang), it can match any other language. I think we need a place people in Nigeria, not NIIT and Aptech, where people
can learn Java.

Hi ,
Haven't been here for sometimes now. Well for those anti java people, you might be right in your own way.
But for me, with almost about 5 years java experience ( active 2 year now), i will tell you that java is still
a language for the future. The problems with us in this part of the world is that we don't get a nice place to learn
such a simple but yet powerful language.
Also, you should have it at the back of your mind that java just marked 10 years last year. For the portability,
you can't take it away from java. Personally, i run my java applications on both windows and Linux, without touching the
codes. In fact, if you have been following the growth, you will notice great changes with each new version. Year before
last, Tiger (5.0) came out with a buster, and now Mustang (6.0) is comming soon.
To mention few area that java is hitting fast, JSP,Servlet,JDBC, J2ME and developing middleware application
for distributed application(J2EE). Like the new JavaEE 5 just out offers some killing features.
All said and done. If you want to learn java, just log on to www.javaranch.com it's free.
Any other problem just post a thread here, will be watching out.

Waz up pal. I do appreciate you questions. About leaving Nigeria soon, yes, my family are in Ireland, though are in Nigeria, right now. But, what is keeping here ? Seriously, i see great opening in software development in Nigeria. Apart from Nationalist pride, i strongly believe
that the earlier one gets himself ready is better.
As for the project, i am highly interested. wouldn't mind if you can send me the spec. I will be
willing to put in at 6hrs everyday for now and say 12 hrs after my SCBCD in mid Feb. If i remember saying i do teach Java Tech in one IT School, here in lagos. So based on your last advice, i have decided to get something up. Host a site myself, is definitely out of the question, cause of power problems. So i have just set up a blogger. Please, try and have a look at
it, http://www.javaden..com. So, expecting to hear from you my guiding angel.

Thanks for the advice so far, but what do you think is the best way forward, considering my present situation. Do i have to abandon the project, since it's likely nobody is ever going to need it. As for my career in IT, which area, do you think i should focus on, am a fast leaner, it takes me an average of a month to learn anything i set my mind on and probarbely an extra 2 months to master it to an acceptable level. Because at 33, time waits for nobody.
I would like to inform you that i really appreciate your effort . This is the best i have ever gotten ap per career issue.

Hi sbucareer,
Thanks for the concern. My main area of interest for now, is developing Enterprise solutions because my
strong points include JSP, Servlets, developing custom tags, JDBC,JNDI and J2EE compliant web containers like Tomcat. However, it does't i can't do standalone java applications. Right now i preparing for Sun Business Component Developer exams. What this means is that i doing my hands on with EJBs. On the linux aspect, i am just a linux freek, infact i develope all my applications using my linux box, my experience dated back to the days of Redhat 6.0. What's the future ? I intend to go into wireless applications using the java wireless API.

On the issue of my project, it actually started, when i called my service provider for assistance in connecting my linux box using
the CDMA phone, and i was told that linux support was not available. So i had to go finding how. So, it just 3 scripts project. But,
with your advice, i extending it to developing a GUI, that will do the whole stuff. I know it going to take about the next 2 months,
i should be able to get it out.
Once more, thanks for the million dollar advice, and wish you a blissful and error free new year.
