Keshi's timeline as Nigeria coach
by George Akpayen 06 July 2015, 18:31

Former Nigerian captain Stephen Keshi spent 36 months in the saddle as Super Eagles head coach until his reign came to an abrupt halt last Saturday when his two-year contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was terminated for lacking "the required commitment to achieve the federation's objectives as set out in the coach's employment contract."

Supersport.com now takes the journey back to relive the time of the man who is called Big Boss due to his influence in Nigeria's national team during his days as captain. Interestingly, Keshi's managerial time with Nigeria came to an end just a day to the 21st year since he quit the Super Eagles as a player.

This writer attempts to capture all of the events involving the former Super Eagles coach from his first game to becoming an African-title winning coach till his last days as the manager of the Nigerian men's national team.

Nov 2, 2011: The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) names Stephen Keshi head coach of the Super Eagles to replace Samson Siasia who failed to lead the team to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. He was handed a three-year contract.

Nov 12, 2011: His first game in charge as head coach ended goalless against Botswana in an international friendly at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

Nov 15, 2011: The Uche brothers, Kalu and Ikechukwu, scored for the Super Eagles as they won 2-0 in an international friendly against the then African champions, Zambia, at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.

April 12, 2014: The Pharaohs of Egypt inflict a first defeat on Keshi's men in an international friendly at the Al-Maktoum Stadium in Dubai.

Oct 13, 2012: Keshi enjoyed his biggest win in an A-game when the Super Eagles thrashed Liberia 6-1 at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar en route to qualifying for the 2013 Afcon in South Africa.

Dec 2012: Three big players of the Nigerian squad -- Peter Odemwingie, Taye Taiwo and Obafemi Martins -- were dropped by Keshi from the provisional squad to the 2013 Afcon.

Dec 2012. Keshi and Odemwingie were involved in a media spat in which the latter said he felt "betrayed" by being left out of the team for the Afcon in South Africa in the coming year despite discussing with the coach his availability.

Feb 10, 2013: The Big Boss joined an exclusive list of Africans by winning the Afcon as a coach and player after the Super Eagles defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 through Sunday Mba's goal at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Feb 11, 2013: Just 24 hours after guiding Nigeria to win their third African title, Keshi announced his resignation on a South Africa radio, citing disrespect from the NFF.

June 17, 2013: Once again, Keshi enjoyed another big win with the Super Eagles -- this time against Tahiti at the Fifa Confederation Cup in Brazil. The Super Eagles defeated Tahiti 6-1 at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte Estádio Mineirão, Belo Horizonte.

June 20, 2013: Three days later, the Nigerians had their 19-match unbeaten streak snapped by Uruguay who edged them 1-2 inside the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador at the Confederation Cup in Brazil.

August 23, 2013: Belgian Tom Saintfiet calls Keshi a racists for comments he made on a United Kingdom-based African TV show, Vox Africa's Sports360, in which the Nigerian coach said: "He (Saintfiet) is not an African person, he is a white dude, he should go back to Belgium." Saintfiet reported the matter to Fifa later.

November 16, 2013: The Super Eagles under Keshi seal qualification to the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil for a fifth appearance after defeating Ethiopia 2-0 in Calabar with Victor Moses and Victor Obinna Nsofor scoring the goals.

January 9, 2014: Keshi is named African Coach of the Year and deservedly so.

February 2014: The 53-year-old Nigerian coach reportedly rejects a foreign assistant and wants one of his assistants, Sylvanus Okpala, reinstated.

June 16, 2014: Keshi becomes only the second Nigerian to manage a team to the World Cup when the Super Eagles played a 0-0 draw with Iran at the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil.

June 21, 2014: The Big Boss becomes the first Nigerian coach to win a World Cup match when the Eagles defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-0 through Peter Odemwingie's goal.

June 30, 2014: After the loss to France in the second round of the World Cup, Keshi reportedly announced his resignation as Nigeria head coach.

September 6, 2014: Keshi became the first Nigerian coach to oversee a team that would lose a game at home in 33 years after Congo stunned the Super Eagles 3-2 in 2015 Afcon qualifying game in Calabar.

October 16, 2014: It was reported that Keshi and his assistants have been relieved of their duties following a statement from the NFF.

October 30, 2014: The NFF reinstates Keshi. But reports in Nigeria suggest that the directive came from the country's government.

November 19, 2014: Nigeria fail to qualify for the 2015 Afcon with Keshi as head coach after a 2-2 draw with South Africa in a qualifying match at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.

April 2015: Keshi agrees to a two-year contract with the Nigerian FA nine months after the expiration of his first contract with his country's football federation.

July 4, 2015: The NFF terminates Keshi's two-year contract just after two months into it, citing lack of commitment from the former Mali and Togo manager.

Politics / We Will Resist Any Attempt To Remove Ekweremadu – Ohanaeze Ndigbo by msmon(m): 7:38pm On Jul 06, 2015
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation,
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Monday, warned that Ndigbo
would resist any attempt to malign Senator Ike
Ekweremadu over his election as the Deputy
President of the Senate.

The Secretary General of the organization, Dr. Joe
Nwaorgu, who made this known while reacting to
media reports regarding the threat on the life of the
Deputy President of the Senate, said Igbo people
were fully prepared to defend him.

The organisation said anybody threatening to harm
Ekweremadu on account of the position he
currently occupies should be ready to face the
consequences as he enjoys the strong support of
his people who are ready to defend him anytime
and any day.

He said that it was a well known fact that Ndigbo
voted massively for Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,
in the last election and they are ready to stand by
those they elected to represent them at various
levels of government.

He said: “We are watching closely what is
happening at the national level and we want to let
the world know that we are solidly behind our son,
Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

“I am saying it loud and clear that Senator
Ekweremadu, who was duly elected by his
colleague as Deputy President of the Senate, is
owned by a people and his people, Ndigbo, are
solidly behind him because they (Ndigbo) voted for
the PDP.

“The grand standing by those seeking patronage
from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC,
does not bother us. We stand by our choice without
regrets. Let it be known to all that Ndigbo should
not be taken for granted.”

Dr. Nwaorgu dismissed claims by some APC
senators that Senator Ekweremadu was not
properly elected, saying “if he was not properly
elected, why should the election of Senator Bukola
Saraki conducted at the same time, same day,
same venue and by the same people be upheld as
flawless?”

Continuing, the Ohanaeze scribe said: “Moreover
the Executive has no lien on the legislators because
they are independent and at liberty to elect
anybody they like to lead them which they have
done. The party has no business with the election
of Principal Officers of the National Assembly and
they should avoid overheating the polity.

“They should also know that President Muhammadu
Buhari belongs to all Nigerians and not the APC
alone. Therefore, the party has no right to say that
they have the sole right to dictate what should
happen at the National Assembly or in the country.”

He urged the APC-led Federal Government to
concentrate on implementing its agenda in order to
move the nation forward, stressing that it was not
in their interest to kick-start the government with
crisis.

Politics / I Won’t Be Intimidated By Desperate Politicians – Ekweremadu by msmon(m): 6:44pm On Jul 06, 2015
Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, on Monday,
expressed serious concern over the current
development linking him with the alleged forgery of the
2015 Senate Standing Order but assured Nigerians
that he would not allow himself to be intimidated by
the unfortunate issue.

Ekweremadu in a statement by his Special Adviser on
Media and Publicity, Mr. Uche Anichukwu, in Abuja,
said that he had received numerous calls and
messages from well meaning Nigerians, since the
matter became a public issue.

He explained that various groups and organisations
had also expressed utter dismay and concern over the
unfolding drama in which his life and liberty are being
threatened by desperate politicians.

The statement reads in part, “Ekweremadu wishes to
assure all Nigerians and concerned members of the
international community that everything is under
control and that all democratic steps are being taken
to preserve the nation’s democracy and protect the
independence of the legislature.

“The Deputy President of the Senate further wishes to
assure Nigerians that necessary steps are being taken
by the security agencies to beef up security around
him.

“He appreciates the nation’s security agencies for their
professional handling of the situation so far, and
acknowledges with a deep sense of gratitude the
numerous youths across the country who have
volunteered to provide additional security around him.

“In all these, however, let it be known that no amount
of intimidation or harassment will deter Senator
Ekweremadu from carrying out the constitutionally
prescribed duties, which on June 9, 2015, PDP and
APC Senators willingly elected him in the full glare of
the world to perform.”

Crime / Man Stabbed To Death While Trying To Settle Warring Neighbours In Lagos by msmon(m): 11:46am On Jul 06, 2015
A peacemaker identified as Kunle Abiola has been
hacked to death while attempting to separate two
warring neighbours in Ajegunle area of Lagos State.

Abiola met his death in the hands of one Chinonso
over the weekend while trying to separate two of
his neighbours from fighting.

Chinomso, while confessing to the crime after been
nabbed by the police, disclosed that he never
thought of stabbing the deceased to death, adding
that it was accidental.

It was gathered that two warring neighbours were
quarrelling over a minor issue which later
degenerated into exchange of blows.

Kunle was said to have tried to settle both warring
factions and in the process was stabbed to death.

A resident identified as Ibrahim said: “He stabbed
Kunle in the jaw and chest. Some people called the
police and Chinomso was arrested. Kunle was
rushed to the General Hospital at Ajegunle.”

The deceased was said to have given up the ghost
on the way to the hospital.

Kenneth Nwosu, the State Police spokesperson
could not confirm the incident as he is yet to

Health / NIHSA Lists 12 States Prone To Flooding In 2015, Lagos Inclusive by msmon(m): 11:32am On Jul 06, 2015
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA)
on Wednesday warned that 12 states might
experience high flood this year.

The Director-General of the agency, Dr Moses
Beckley, gave the warning at the presentation of
the 2015 Annual Flood Outlook in Abuja.

Commenting on the highlight of the report, Beckley
listed the states as Niger, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers,
Anambra, Taraba, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Sokoto,
Adamawa, Kogi and Benue.

Beckley said that probable risks areas in the
country had been classified into: High Risk, Medium
Risk and Low Risk Flood areas.

He listed River Basins of Sokoto-Rima, Niger-Benue
and Anambra as those that might experience high
flooding.

Beckley also said that local areas in Shinkafi, Biase,
Chikum, Munya, Bukuru, Bonny, Etiosa among
others might experience moderate flooding.

The director-general said that Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta
and Lagos are expected to experience coastal
flooding due to the rise in sea level and tidal surge.

He urged Nigerians to put in place responsive
measures that would help in reducing flood
hazards.

According to him, the call is necessary because
human activities are majorly responsible for
recurrent flood in the country.

“Indiscriminate dumping of refuse, deforestation,
and poor drainage systems have devastating effect
on the environment.

“Natural disasters are becoming more common all
over the world, 80 per cent of these disasters are
water-related.

“This can be linked to the effect of climate change,
it is a reality, and we can’t reverse it.

“That is why we must do all we can, through
attitudinal changes, and measures in place to help
in reducing flooding hazards,” he said.

Beckley said that the devastating effect of flooding
would greatly affect socio-economic development.

The director-general said that with timely and
proper responses, Nigerians do not need to worry
about the rains.

He recommended that all stakeholders should begin
immediate public enlightenment on the need to
desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuses and
wastes.

Beckley also urged all stakeholders to begin
immediate maintenance of hydrological structures
in the country, saying this would go a long way to
reduce disaster risk.

He also called for the immediate evacuation and
relocation of people living in the flood-prone areas
and waterways to further mitigate against any
eventuality.

Also speaking, the Director-General, Nigeria
Metrological Agency, Dr Anthony Anuforom,
commended NIHSA on the report.

He said that this would go a long way to educate
Nigerians on what to expect during the rainy
season.

Anuforom said that NIMET had made it a point of
duty to educate Nigerians on weather forecast
through its Seasonal Rainfall Predictions (SRP).

He urged Nigerians to embark on disaster risk
reduction measures to make the country safe for
all.

In his remark, Mr Istifanus Musa, the Permanent
Secretary, Federal Ministry of Water Resources,
said that the report was drawn in partnership with
NIMET’s SRP, and a long historical record of
hydrological data.

Musa, represented by Mr Joe Kwanashe, Director,
Irrigation and Drainage, said that through
sensitisation and early warning campaigns, there
would be a reduction in loss of lives and property to
flood.

Musa urged Nigerians to collaborate with relevant
stakeholders to put in place measures to protect
the environment, saying that government could not
do it alone.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the
Annual Flood Outlook provides flood forecasts and
advice on precautionary measures on probable or
critical flood zones.

Sports / Enyeama May Have Played Last Game For Nigeria - NFF Official by msmon(m): 10:23am On Jul 06, 2015
If the recommendations of the NFF disciplinary
committee stands, then Super Eagles captain
Vincent Enyeama, has played his last game for the
former African champions.

According to African Football, the Lille goalkeeper
may be stripped of his captaincy, following his
remarks about the security of Kaduna, before the
Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Chad.

“The federation is not happy with the Eagles
captain. And I am sorry to say if the leadership
decides to follow the recommendations of the
disciplinary committee to the letter, then maybe
Vincent Enyeama may have played his last game
for the Super Eagles,” said one official.

“Even if he is recalled to the national team, he may
no longer wear the captain’s armband, because the
NFF view his actions before and after the game
against Chad as bad example for other players, also
he didn’t show up for the disciplinary committee
hearing”.

The official added: “You see what has happened to
Keshi, it’s the disciplinary committee’s
recommendations; so, if Enyeama escaped their
recommendations, then it must be a divine
intervention.”

Enyeama made his debut in 2001 and he is now the
most capped Nigeria star with 101 appearances

http://dailypost.ng/2015/07/06/nff-official-says-enyeama-may-have-played-last-game-for-nigeria/

NFF should be aware of the implication of some of their decisions, sacking Keshi is enough distraction in our bid to qualify for next AFCON competition. Eyeama is a loyal servant of the super eagles and arguably the most respected, banning him will be a big blow. I thereby recommend that he should warned against future conduct and dined reasonable amount of money. ©MON33

Infidelity is the number one reason why most
marriages fail, according to statistics provided by
marriage counsellors. They say that every
unfaithfulness in marriage starts with a proposal—even
from the most unexpected person—which can,
however, be accepted or rejected.

PUNCH asked some people what they would do if their
spouses’ friends want to date them

See Responses Below And Share Your Thought:

I’ll inform my husband
Ruth Iniye

If I keep quiet over such matter, it could turn to
something else that I may not be able to handle later.
For instance, if I tell my husband at a later period or
he perhaps finds out on his own – maybe he sees a
text his friend sends to my phone – it may land me in
trouble. It is better to tell him when it happens and
clear my mind rather than wait till a later time. If my
husband is mature enough, I know he will handle the
matter wisely, thereby removing the yoke off my head.

I’ll chase her away
Lawrence Popoola

I will never allow another lady take the place of my
wife. I will keep to my marriage oath and do all my
best not to cheat on my wife. So if another woman,
who is even a friend of my spouse, asks me out, I will
bluntly refuse. I may not tell my wife because I am not
a kid, but I will make sure I settle the matter wisely –
simply by chasing her away.

How dare he?
Lawal Ramota

It is highly ridiculous. It happens and it has happened
to close friends of mine. First, I will challenge him how
he dares do such a thing to his friend. I’m not even
the potential victim here, but my husband, who is his
friend. Such a person will not back off if I don’t
confront him and probably threaten him with reporting
him to my husband. Maybe if he hears that, he will
back off. If he stops it, I will not bother reporting him
to my husband, but if he doesn’t, I will tell my husband
and watch as the event unfolds between the two of
them.

I’ll embarrass her
Michael Ibhe

This is a serious temptation. But as my pastor has
taught me, I will flee from it; I will not confront it
because I am a man. Any man can fall for this kind of
thing, especially if one’s wife is not around, but by the
grace of God, I will not allow that woman to have her
way in my home. I could even play a prank on her. I
could ask her that we meet at a place (like a
restaurant) for the date, and then while she’s waiting
for me on that day, I’ll show up with my wife. That
kind of embarrassment is enough to stop her from
disturbing me. She will never forget it.

I’ll set him up
Juliet Adekagun

Such a man is a devil who wants to destroy my home.
And when temptation comes, you flee from it. That
kind of man is not a real friend, he’s a betrayer and I
will run away from him. If he is too persistent, I will try
to set him up and let my spouse find out for himself
because if I tell him, he may not believe me, especially
if it’s a friend that I have complained about in time
past. He may assume I want to separate him and his
friend. You know how men think

She must leave me alone
Olalere Ifeoluwa

The last thing I want in my marriage is for a strange
woman to show up and try to snatch me away from
my wife. I will let her know that I am not that type of
man she probably thinks I am. If she doesn’t back off,
I may inform my wife. And you know women; she will
call the bluff of her friend. When that happens, she will
leave me alone. She will even cease to be a friend of
our family again – which is what I will like.

I’ll seek help
Dare Bunmi

I could seek counselling from parents and friends –
people that I trust could give me wise counsel. The
truth of the matter is, if one keeps quiet over this
issue and expects the man will back off later, it could
be dangerous. It is when someone voices out in time
of trouble that he or she can be saved. I know that by
the time I inform good friends and family members
about it, I will get at least one way to deal with the
matter. Telling my husband should be the last resort,
especially if I want to save their friendship. Otherwise,
he will be the first person to be told there’s fire on the
mountain.

My friends must hear about it
Cyrus Aliegbe

This is not an issue that is only for me. I will try to
inform a few friends about the matter and seek their
counsel because I may think I know what to do, but I
could be wrong about it. Good friends are priceless;
they can keep me away from evil by providing me
good counsel. By the time I inform some of them, I will
know what to do, but definitely, I would not let my wife
know about it – especially if I know she may not be
able to handle it well.

My husband doesn’t have to know
Desire Igarando

This is definitely a serious issue and it requires
wisdom to handle. One thing is, if I tell my husband
about it, what is the probability that he will believe my
story? I have seen this kind of scenario before
whereby the man believed his friend and doubted his
wife. He believed that his friend of so many years
couldn’t do such a thing to him, and thought probably
that his wife wanted him to break his friendship with
his friend. You can never predict a man. Therefore, if
it happens to me, I may keep mum over it and fight
the guy off on my own. I don’t have to tell my
husband. Since I can’t cheat on my husband, there’s
no need informing him.

I’ll ask her one question
Michael Oladejo

Such people are everywhere but they are not difficult
to deal with. I will ask her that if she were my wife,
would she want to be cheated on? If she says no, I will
then ask her why she wants me to do that against her
friend (my wife). If she says yes, I will tell her to go
and look for another home to destroy, not mine.
Useless people like that could ruin one’s home if they
are given a chance. I have determined never to cheat
on my wife, no matter what.

Religion / Latest Boko Haram Attack: Suicide Bomber Kills Six At A Church In Yobe by msmon(m): 11:05am On Jul 05, 2015
BAUCHI, Nigeria, July 5 (Reuters) -
A suicide bomber killed six people
at a church on Sunday in
Potiskum, a town in northeast
Nigeria hit by suspected Boko
Haram attacks in the past, a Red
Cross official and a witness said.

"People were just going to the
church when the bomber entered,
otherwise the casualty figure
would have been higher," said Red
Cross official Hassan Alhaji
Muhammad, who visited the
scene of the blast on the outskirts
of Potiskum
A hospital in Potiskum said it had
received the bodies.
Suspected Islamist militant
gunmen and bombers killed more
than 200 people last week in a
spate of bloodletting that
prompted renewed outrage and
calls for an international meeting
to coordinate the offensive
against Boko Haram.

French President Francois
Hollande said the Boko Haram
threat was getting stronger and
that he was ready to hold a
summit, following one in Paris in
May 2014, to gather the leaders of
countries fighting the insurgents.
New Nigerian President
Muhammadu Buhari is due to visit
his counterpart in Cameroon after
the Muslim holy month of
Ramadan and meets U.S.
President Barack Obama on July
20, when the fight against Boko
Haram is likely to be high on the
agenda.

Potiskum is in Yobe state next to
Borno, a remote state which is
Boko Haram's stronghold in
Nigeria and borders Cameroon,
Chad and Niger. (Reporting by

But during the various campaigns, the APC explicitly said: ''We shall defeat Boko Haram''...there was even a big a$$ billboard ad to that effect in my location.

Do they want to take the cowardly way out now?

It was clearly stated that BH will be crushed within a month.

If you already have machineries that will be put in place soon to decapitate these folks, why bother negotiating?

You make sense!

The Presidency on Saturday made clarifications on
any possible negotiation with the Boko Haram sect.
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the
President, Femi Adesina, in a statement titled
“Amplification of comments on negotiations with
Boko Haram”, said the Federal Government will not
shy away from any negotiation initiated by the
Boko Haram sect.

Although he pointed out that United States also
negotiated with the Talibans in Afghanistan at some
point in time, he said if the government will go into
such negotiation, it will be from a point of strength
and not weakness.

Adesina said President Muhammadu Buhari, who
has won such insurgency before, was now poised
to win the fight against Boko Haram.

He said: “Most wars, however, furious or vicious,
often end on the negotiation table. So, if Boko
Haram opts for negotiation, the government will not
be averse to it.

“Government will, however, not be negotiating from
a position of weakness, but that of strength. The
machinery put in place, and which will be set in
motion soon, can only devastate and decapitate
insurgency.

“It is multinational in nature, and relief is on the
way for Nigeria and her neighbours. President
Muhammadu Buhari is resolute. He has battled and
won insurgency before. He is poised to win again.
It is a promise he made to Nigerians, and he is a
promise keeper.

“But I say again, if the insurgents want to
negotiate, no decent government will be averse to
such. Didn’t the Taliban and Americans also
negotiate in Afghanistan?”

Saying this is a show of weakness, the FG should just go ahead and do the needful. The rate of killing by those errant boys is very alarming.MON33

Ignoramuses. Their governor and government officials are busy eating the state treasury and they can't do anything about it.

They stay in the jungle maltreating their mate.
