Full transcript of the interview granted to THISDAY newspaper on the 30th of September 2016. Why I am Challenging Obaseki- Ize-Iyamu After the Edo State governorship election, some people expected you and your party to congratulate the winner and move on with your life. Why did you refuse to do that? You must understand that in as much as I was the candidate in the election, I ran under a platform of a political party; people gave me support, a lot of people came out boldly to show that support. In accepting or rejecting the election, common sense demands that we take a critical look at the result itself and consult with all the stakeholders on how your response will be. In this particular case, it was very clear that the result that was announced was completely at variance with how the people voted. A lot of irregularities took place where the APC said that they won. And the independent National Electoral Commission, INEC chose to completely ignore such irregularities. In many places where we were leading, thugs were sent to disrupt the places, in spite of the heavy security, the police did not arrest anybody, stopped anybody. How could it have seen indices of ballot snatching, violence and police that was everywhere refused to arrest anybody? Is it that those who carried out these acts were invisible or have immunity? Your guess is as good as mine. Again, financial inducement was the order of the day during the election; places they claimed they won where like markets where voters were told if they vote for them this would be the amount of money that they would get. Again, security agents turned blind eyes. Although they know what the APC members were doing but it did not matter to them that those activities were electoral offences. Many of your members also complained of harassment by security agents. Do you have any evidence? Of course our leaders were deliberately harassed by security agencies and thugs on election day. There were instances we can mention, where Police went to the polling units to arrest our leaders on charges that were laughable, and only for their security agents to take them to their police stations locked them till after the election. It was a question of demoralising our supporters and members. It was a carefully planned script. And the police and the INEC gave their backing in ensuring that APC won the election by all means. And we looked at these issues and we said we cannot dignify the fraudulent results which INEC announced in favour of the APC. As we were campaigning for the election, our people asked us: can you defend our votes? And we said yes. If we just walk away like that, it means we have helped to destroy democracy in our state. It means if there is election tomorrow, nobody will turn out to vote. The high turnout of votes you saw was a result of our appeal for members to turn out en mass to vote. And unfortunately, the INEC’s result did not even reflect the massive turnout of votes at the end of the day. If we compare the result of this election with that of the four years ago, you will conclude that more people turned out four years ago; but that is not true. There are more votes this time, but the result did not reflect the voting. So, what happened? If you look at the result, you will find an uncommon situation where many people who got accredited did not vote. This even happened in an election where INEC said do accreditation and vote immediately, unlike the former situation where you do accreditation and return later to vote. People, who came to the voting centres, did their accreditation, and they were given ballot papers, voted and at the end of the day their votes were not counted. What happened? Clearly INEC did a great disservice by announcing a man who did not win the election. As the real winner of the election, we put all of these together and our party said that it cannot stand. And I agreed with my Party that the results INEC announced was fraudulent and that we won the election clearly. And you can see, after the result was announced, Edo State was like a graveyard; if not for my peaceful disposition and that of my Party, the whole state would have erupted in violence. I have always preached that on no account must anybody result to violence. Under normal circumstances, if the election was free and fair, I would have congratulated the winner and appeal to Edo people to give him the necessary support. I cannot congratulate the man who robbed Edo people of their votes. Going by the results of the election in the three senatorial districts, it appears that the turnout of voters was very low in Edo south and Edo Central, compare to the huge turnout in Edo North. What really happened? That is the fraud we are talking about. Anybody, who witnessed the election will attest that the turnout in Edo South was huge; the same thing in Edo Central. The turnout in Edo North was not as heavy as that of the Edo South. But if you check the result, you will think otherwise. It is not true; people just sat down somewhere and allocated figures to suit their intention. Having had the opportunity to receive our agents’ results from different polling units, and the official total result from INEC, it is very clear that the announced result was a fraud and it cannot stand. Some people were of the view that many of Edo people sold their conscience, that they collected money from APC and voted for the party. What is your take on that? This is not correct. The truth is that people always capitalise on the poverty of our people; the present government in Edo State has deliberately impoverished our people to put them in a position they can buy their votes and conscience. I can tell you that many people who took their money and voted them were not enough to give them the victory they are claiming because we had told the people during our campaign that APC was going to give them money; that if they cannot refuse their money, they should collect it but vote against them. And many young voters told me they collected their money but voted against them; they voted for PDP. It was the realisation that be collected their money and still voted against them, that they started to collude with INEC ad-hoc staff to change the result in various polling units; did illegal massive thumb-printing and destroyed many of our votes. You can see what happened at George Idah polling unit in Benin City; where one of their notorious thugs,-having lost his unit and realising that his world was gone, attempted to disrupt the collation of different results from polling units. He had tried it at a polling unit but he was resisted by the people and it’s on video tape. He later moved to the collation centre, and we have it on good authority that a police officer in that unit opened the gate for him – at the collation centre where you have over 20 armed mobile police men, he was allowed to move in with armed thugs, started shooting and seized a lot of the election materials. Luckily for us, a lot of the results had already been collated. He did that and nobody arrested him. Till today, the police have not declared him wanted for the criminal assault he personally led. Who gave him the right to carry arms? But he did it openly and nothing happened. Yes, some people voted because they were given money but how many were they? Yes, there were huge financial inducement but the results APC got were predicated on irregularities, over voting, voting without accreditation, ballot snatching, writing of fake results, mass thumb-printing, and I will also tell you what we discovered: they paid some youth corp members to deliberately void many of our votes. In this election over 30,000 votes were deliberately voided. More so, in trying to sort out the ballot papers, they deliberately stained PDP’s vote. Nearly 90% of our votes where voided in that situation. APC was able to carry out these criminal acts as a result of the collaboration of the INEC’s ad-hoc-staff and the police. I am sure you read in the papers that some of the ad-hoc staff recently protested at the APC state secretariat in Edo, demanding to be paid for the work they did for APC. And the whole world is not asking question. The level of irregularities and fraud was unbelievable. But we have confidence in the judiciary. It is like you trusted the INEC and the Nigerian police to conduct a free and fair election. Are you now disappointed? I am very disappointed in them because if we don’t trust INEC, the only option was to boycott the election; we don’t have right to conduct the election and we can’t call foreign agencies to conduct the election. It is only the INEC that is charged with the legal right to conduct elections in Nigeria. We had to also trust the Nigerian Police, if not, we would have resorted to self help like they did in some states, and that would have led to bloodshed of innocent souls. How long are we going to continue with carnage because of election? The police and INEC disappointed the entire people of Edo State. We had cases where police targeted key leaders of PDP across the state; illegally arresting them-just to make them leave the polling units so that APC could manipulate the election. APC members were moving with thugs, police and the army on election day, sharing money and giving instruction on how to manipulate the election. In many areas where election did not take place, fake results were announced—like Ikpoba-Okha, ward 10 in Ologbo. Election did not take place there but results were announced and INEC shamefully accepted the result. There were many instances like that across the state. But we have faith in the judiciary; we have faith in the almighty God that justice will be done at the end of the day. With what is happening in the judiciary, do you still think the institution is the last hope of the common man? For me, God remains the last hope. But in a legal sense, the judiciary is the place to go for redress. I also believe that the present harassment of some judicial officers is in bad taste. We applaud the fight against corruption, nobody can query that, but corruption is not just a fight against financial crimes. Corruption is about subverting the due process. So, when DSS started arresting judges in the mid-night, even the DSS is being corrupted and subverted to do what they are not statutorily empowered to do; the institution is being corrupted and of course, there are due process and when you don’t follow it, the process is being corrupted. If there are alleged corrupt practices against some judges, there are procedures to follow-in dealing with the matter. There is an institution constitutionally empowered to deal with issues of corruption and indiscipline against judges; that is the National Judicial Council (NJC) even if they wanted to arrest them for alleged financial crimes, the police and the EFCC are there to do their jobs and it is not the job of DSS. We are not against the fight against corruption but let’s do it within the context of the law. Since PDP is already at the election tribunal some people are wondering why your members are still protesting in Edo State and Abuja? People don’t understand that a mandate that is stolen is not for the candidate alone. It is just because the level of our legal jurisprudence is very low otherwise an electorate can go to court to challenge the announcement of fake results. People are protesting because they believed they have been robbed of their electoral judgement; they believed an imposter has been announced as governor of Edo state. The protest is beyond Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. In 2007 when Adams Oshiomhole was not declared winner in that election, was there protest? Even when he was at the tribunal, was there protest? The answer is yes. These are not protest by thugs; I saw serving senators, former members of National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly, doctors, lawyers, and others, who felt cheated during and after the election. And the protests are peaceful. Even the APC that claimed it won could not celebrate. Many of your members appear to be losing hope in the system. What is your message to them? I want to appeal to them not to lose hope, they should be prayerful, I will do everything to ensure the actualisation of the mandate they gave to me. I cannot be compromised, I cannot be bought and I have faith in the judiciary, I have faith in God. Edo people should also have faith, and on no condition should they result to violence. It is going to be a long road and in the course of this journey, a man who did not win will be temporarily sworn in; but we must not leave the state. The will of God will be done at the end of the day.

As the Nigerian economy bites hard, scores of mobile phone users now head to the “Abuja GSM Village’’ for phone swap deals called “kankara’’. The deal is an exchange of phones which give the users new handsets of their choice in exchange for their old ones at little cost. The deal has become a popular trend at the market located at the Wuse Zone One part of the federal capital city, with patronage cutting across all ages. Phone users who may not have enough money for new ones prefer the exchange. However, the recent surge is not unconnected with the caveat by WhatsApp that it will de-list blackberry and some other mobile phones from its app from December. The Abuja GSM Village is a bustling market for sellers of all sorts of phones and phone accessories, alongside artisanal services. “The exchange entails a buyer handing over an old phone to a seller and getting a new or better one in return with just a little money added,’’ Mr Nonso Okoye, a trader at the market, said. He said those involved preferred the exchange because they usually get the type of phone they wanted without paying the actual worth of it in direct cash transaction. “Everybody wants to get a better version of handsets, but not everybody has the money to pay for it. “So, `kankara’ offers the opportunity to get one’s choice phone with a little money.’’ Another trader, Mr Ben Ibe, said sellers at the market usually make good profits from such exchanges as they would normally sell the exchanged phones at higher prices. He however said they were not giving out phones in exchange without making sure that the profit from the transaction would be worth it. “A customer may be given a phone whose cost is N35,000 for just N20,000, if he brings a phone that is worth N25,000. “By the time I sell his old phone, I would have made a gain of N10,000.’’ Miss Biola Ojo, who was at the market for a “kankara’’ transaction, said she was there to swap her blackberry handset which had served her for too long. She said she intended to exchange it for an upgraded version of any other phone that would be compatible with WhatsApp. “The amount I will add to get another phone will depend on the quality of the new one offered to me,’’ she said In Nigeria, there is always a way to go round every difficult situation. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/recession-forces-nigerians-phone-swap-abuja-gsm-village/ |

THE All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo state, market women and coalition of Civil Society organizations in the state, have shelved their planned solidarity rally for the governor elect of the state, Mr Godwin Obaseki, citing the on-going coronation ceremonies for the crowning of the Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom, Ehenede Erediauwa as the new Oba of Benin. Addressing journalists yesterday, a leader of the APC in the state, Lawrence Orkar, explained that “we wanted to tell Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu who failed as a governorship candidate and his cohorts that hiring little children to protest will not help him. So we wanted to let them know that Edo people are united with Obaseki and are happy with the conduct of the freest and fairest election conducted so far in Nigeria by INEC. “You would have seen all our market women, youths and civil society organizations coming to say no to PDP’s plan to create wrong impression that the election was rigged. But we are shelving it because of the respect we have for our traditional institution. If the PDP does not respect our tradition we do, we hold it in a very high esteem and that is why we are shelving the rally in honour of our Royal father, the Crown Prince who will be crowned on the 20th of this month. “As you can observe, we have several traditional rites going on in the kingdom, so we don’t want anything to disrupt the process. The day Obaseki was declared winner, we went round the streets celebrating with the people, after one week we started seeing contrived protest reminiscent of students protest and that cannot be a political reaction to the election that held on the 28th of September. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/why-we-shelved-our-planned-rally-in-support-of-obaseki-edo-apc/

Governor elect of Edo state, Mr Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki began his journey to Osadebey Avenue Government House last Tuesday with a visit to the palace of the Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom, Edaiken N’Uselu, Crown Prince Ehenede Erediauwa. He was accompanied to the palace by the out-going governor of the state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, his wife Iara, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) in the state led by its chairman, Anselm Ojezua, and Chief of Staff to the governor, Patrick Obahiagbon (Igodomigodo). Others were Rasaq Bello-Osagie, Gentleman Amegor and several other leaders of APC. At the palace, Mr Obaseki informed the Crown Prince that he came to inform him about his victory at the just concluded governorship election. He then pledged his loyalty to the palace as the in-coming governor and solicited for prayers from the elders. It was an occasion whereby people were anxious to observe the expression of the Crown Prince, who was meeting publicly for the first time, Godwin Obaseki, a scion of the Obaseki family, that was accused of betraying the Benin Royal family during the reign of Oba Ovonramwen. The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, made futile efforts during the campaigns to instigate the palace against the candidacy of Obaseki by painting the picture of an Obaseki governor who will not be loyal to the palace. But the Crown Prince, an Ambassador of several years had never bothered himself with the events of the past, rather his major concern was getting a governor who will surpass the achievements of Oshiomhole, put food on the table of his subjects and ensure respect for the traditional institution. It was therefore not surprising that His Royal Majesty, and his top palace chiefs led by the Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri received Godwin Obaseki very warmly last Tuesday. Governor Oshiomhole who kicked off the conversation, said “We feel very privileged that you granted us this opportunity to pay you this courtesy visit and to formally present to you what I can rightly describe as the outcome of your prayers. Your Royal Majesty, in your prayers you asked God and our ancestors that of all those contesting, may God and our ancestors allow the one who will develop this Kingdom, put food on the table of the ordinary man in Edo state and above all respect not only the King, not only the palace but also the tradition of the Benin Kingdom and traditional rulers of which your Royal Majesty is the paramount traditional ruler of our state. “At the end of the exercise, Godwin Neghoghase Obaseki emerged victorious. We believe that your prayers have come to pass because there was another leg of your prayers when you asked God to intervene in the face of all the anxiety and the fears before the election to ensure that the election come and pass peacefully without any violence. This is the best election conducted in recent times, particularly in the South South geo political zone in which not one person was shot and as we speak not one person is hospitalized. So I believe that everything you asked of our creator and of our ancestors were answered. So we came to thank you, your Royal Majesty, for your leadership, for your prayers and to celebrate a violent free and fair election, the best that had been conducted in recent years. In some of our neighbouring states in the South South, even in a House of Assembly election, they were counting the number of lives lost, or the number of people hospitalized. But on this occasion everything went peacefully. I believe it is a sign of many more good things to happen under your reign that will witness peace and prosperity. “As the outgoing governor, as I look towards November 12, I feel privileged that I will still be on the seat as Governor, when the whole world will converge in this historic city to celebrate your coronation. That will be the highest point of my stewardship in this great kingdom and this great state”. Also speaking, Obaseki who recognized that his loyalty to the palace will be tested in the next few months, vowed to respect the traditions and customs of the Kingdom just like Oshiomhole. His words: “First, I have come home to say thank you. I went out to fight for a prize and I have come to tell my father that I have brought the prize home. But I know that it would have been almost impossible if you have not sanctioned it through your prayers. In the course of politicking and campaigns a lot of things were said, many of them were not true. But this was politics and I am happy here today that some of my uncles who are chiefs have come to accompany me. I want to assure you that we are integral part to the palace and I want to pledge my unalloyed loyalty to you and the palace. “I also, at this juncture, appeal to you to help me thank the Comrade governor, I don’t think I would have been elected governor if not for the full backing of Governor Oshiomhole. We are all witnesses to all he has done to the traditional institution in Edo state. He came, he saw and he has conquered. And in conquering he has set a new paradigm and examples for me to follow. He has been able to demonstrate to me why the traditional institution has been a very supportive part of our democracy. I have seen how he has reawakened the traditional institution and I saw in the last election the strength and the meaning of that institution. I want to promise today that I will continue to strengthen the traditional institution in Edo state. The least I can do is to maintain what he has done but I assure you that I will build on it”. “It is God’s doing that I am being ushered in as governor of Edo state just about the same time that you are going to be crowned our King. I want to assure you of my full cooperation and support and if by any reason I make any mistake please call me and correct me as your son”. In his response, the Crown Prince lamented that the people of the Kingdom will miss Governor Oshiomhole whom he described as a personal friend. He said, “ Before he (Oshiomhole) joined politics he came and informed me, he started with Labour Party and later he went to AC then. I looked at Comrade and I said are you sure you will be able to do the politics. But as you have all seen today he has become one very astute, aggressive warrior politician”. Hailing the outcome of the just concluded governorship election in the state, Crown Prince Ehenede said, “I am so delighted with the kind of peace and tranquility that prevailed during the election, we were all worried during the elections. It made us to pray harder because my father taught us how to pray harder when things are tough and we thank God that the Almighty answered our prayers. And I want to say that in Benin we don’t believe in small gods here, for the benefit of other religions, we don’t believe in small gods, we believe in one Almighty God. I thank my God, I thank my ancestors for hearing my prayers and bringing out as governor for our state, somebody who will listen to the traditional rulers, to the elders of the land. He (Godwin) has come out on his own to say it. “But I want to plead with Oshiomhole, please don’t leave him, don’t abandon him when you finish your tenure in office, he still needs your guidance, he still needs your advice. This is because Oshiomhole is an astute politician, he knows how it is played. I want to assure your Excellency that you have produced your successor in the name of God and our ancestors and our ancestors will keep blessing your efforts. To the governor elect, he said “I will appeal to you to keep your promises, keep to your word, respect the traditional institution, keep food on the table of our people and build on what Oshiomhole has kept on ground. I will advise Obaseki to use this opportunity to reverse some of the images, some not too pleasant images that some people have about your family. Do your best as an individual, do your best as governor of Edo state that people have chosen, do your best as Godwin Obaseki. One of the things I respect Oshiomhole for is his respect for tradition. I always marveled at the kind of passion he had for my father, the kind of respect he had for my father. When Governor Rochas Okorocha came here, he said the governor here has made all of them in Abuja to know the value of the Benin tradition and a whole lot of things they did not know about the kingdom. “Even before Oshiomhole became governor I chested out for him, he was not around when I vowed for him that he would respect the tradition. He has done his best for the state and I asked the Chiefs to pray for the governor and the governor elect and their wives”. The occasion came to a climax as prayers were said for Governor Oshiomhole and his wife, just as the Crown Prince also prayed for Obaseki. www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/dont-abandon-successor-benin-crown-prince-tells-oshiomhole/

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate in the just concluded Edo State governorship election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu will on Friday, formally lead the street protests against the declaration by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, of the All Progressive Party, APC, candidate, Mr. Godwin Obaseki as the winner of the September 28, 2016 election. It will be recalled that party loyalists and supporters including civil society groups, students, workers, traders, artisans, coordinated by the Centre for Patriotic Leadership Initiative, CPLI, a leadership and rights advocacy group, have been protesting the results in Benin City. CPLI Coodinator , Mr Saint Eronmosele, said in Benin, yesterday, that the protest was one of 100 protests tagged “Mother of the Series of Protests” and will have speakers such as state PDP chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, Pastor Ize – Iyamu and many others. He said that the protests against impunity, perpetration of illegality and massive electoral fraud by INEC, APC, security operatives and Governor Adams Oshiomhole who he said, “colluded to steal and subvert the people’s mandate freely given to PDP candidate, Ize-Iyamu. “We have the permission of the law to protest against perceived wrongs because where there is a wrong, there has to be a remedy. We shall take to the streets for 100 days until the stolen mandate is restored.” He urged all to dress in black because, “We are mourning the death of democracy, justice and fairness in Edo State. “On that day, all Edo people, even APC, are all invited to throng the streets in a massive protest across Edo State as we are saying enough is enough to impunity and illegality.” On insinuations that the Nigeria Police Force recently announced a ban on streets protests in the state, he said, “Defy the police order, defy APC thugs, defy everyone who wants to silence your voice or darken your conscience. Stand for what is right and be counted. Take a place on the right side of history. “These protests are not about Ize-Iyamu. No. The protests are about you and I, our future, our hope. If they succeeded against Ize-Iyamu, it means that tomorrow when you and I also stand for election based on our track record or popularity, that someone somewhere would also deprive us of victory. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/ize-iyamu-to-lead-protest-against-inec-results-on-edo-election-group/
