The security breach in and around the Israeli border fence which Hamas took advantage of was actually a trap and deliberate, but Hamas fell for it.
The Israeli was looking for the slightest excuse to pumel Palestine, and Hamas terrorists offered them the much needed leeway.

It wasn't a trap, Isreali would not deliberately put their citizens at risk just to bait the Palestinians. The Isreali defense was weak and couldn't prevent an external aggression.
