Car Talk / Car Dealer Gets Fake Alert, Customer Absconds During Test Drive by NCBLOG: 6:56pm On Nov 08, 2023
A Car Dealer, Olatubosun Gafar, has become distressed after a customer, Segun Opeyemi, sent him a fake alert of N6.2m and absconded with one of his cars, in the Ijebu Ode area of Ogun State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Opeyemi walked into Gafar’s office last Wednesday and told him that he was interested in buying a Toyota Camry 2014 model Spyder, parked in the compound.

According to the 39-year-old, Opeyemi returned on Thursday morning, made payment for the car and also sent the receipt to him on WhatsApp messenger.

However, Gafar explained that Opeyemi after payment requested to test drive the car and also withdraw money from a bank close to them.

He added that he joined him in the car, but things took another turn when Opeyemi called his mother and told her that he was coming to see her in his new car.

Gafar explained further that at that point, he got a call from the office asking them to return and collect the receipt and new number plate for the car, but Opeyemi refused, insisting that he did not want to keep his mother waiting at an alleged Sawmill bus stop, in Ijebu Ode.

The buyer pleaded with the car dealer, gave him N50,000 and told him he would return in 10 minutes for the receipt and number plate, so he (Gafar) alighted and Opeyemi zoomed off.

Gafar said, “On Wednesday, around 4 pm at Ijebu Ode, beside Spicy Chicken, a man came into the office, saw a Spider Toyota Camry, a 2014 model and said he liked it and was interested in buying it.

“While he was checking the car, a friend I know called him and told him that they had found another car, that he should come to check it out and he collected my number and left.

“Thirty minutes later, he called me that he didn’t like the car he went to see, and that he would come the next morning to buy my car.

“On Thursday morning, he came, tested the car and said he liked it. He told me he had transferred the agreed N6.2m to my account and he sent the receipt to me on WhatsApp.

“I called someone to come and do the change of ownership and number plate.

“While we were waiting for the man to come, he said he wanted to withdraw small cash that he would give to the boys at a First Bank branch close to us, I accepted but joined him in the car.

“Getting to the bank, the crowd was much and he said we should move forward and see if we would find any Point of Sale agents to withdraw from.

“Driving there, he called his mother and told her he had bought a car and that he was coming to meet her at the Sawmill, that he wanted her to be the first to enter the car.

“Immediately, someone called me from the office that the person to do the number plate was waiting for us, so I told him to turn around so we could go and get it done but he pleaded with me that his mum would be waiting in the road. That I should please let him go and meet her.

“He gave me the particulars of the car and N50,000 to go and give the boys and also pay for the number plate, that he would be back in 10 minutes.

I don’t know what he used on me, but that was how I got out of the vehicle and he drove off.”

Gafar lamented that he waited for the money to reflect in his account but it didn’t, so he visited an Eco Bank nearby and was told that it was a fake alert.

“I tried calling the number he gave to me after the bank confirmed that it was a fake alert that he showed me, but his number has not been going. It was registered with an Aboki name
,” he said.

Gafar said he reported to the police at the Area Command, Igbeba Police Station, Ijebu Ode.

When contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, said she had a lot that she was working on at the moment and that she would get back to our correspondent. She was yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

She said, “Please, be patient. I have a lot that I am working on right now. I will get back to you once I get to the office.”

Business / Old, New Naira Notes Remain Legal Tender – CBN by NCBLOG: 6:42pm On Nov 08, 2023
The Central Bank of Nigeria has instructed all its branches nationwide to continue issuing various denominations of both old and redesigned banknotes in ample quantities to deposit money banks.

The Apex Bank disclosed this in a statement signed by its Director, Corporate Communications, Isa AbdulMumin, and posted on its X handle on Wednesday.

This comes in response to reports of cash shortages in major cities, despite earlier assurances from the CBN about sufficient cash availability nationwide.

Part of the statement read, “For the avoidance of doubt, while reiterating that there are sufficient banknotes across the country for all normal economic activity, we wish to state unambiguously that every banknote issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria remains legal tender and should not be rejected by anyone, as stipulated in Section 20(5) of the CBN Act, 2007.

Accordingly, branches of the CBN across the country have been directed to continue to issue different denominations of old and redesigned banknotes in adequate quantities to Deposit Money Banks for onward circulation to bank customers.

We wish to restate that all denominations of banknotes issued by the CBN remain legal tender. In line with Section 20(5) of the CBN Act, 2007.”

It added that “no one should refuse to accept the naira as a means of payment.”

The CBN advised the public to accept all CBN-issued banknotes currently in circulation and guard against panic withdrawals.

“We reaffirm that there is sufficient stock of currency notes to facilitate normal economic activities. Furthermore, to reduce the pressure on the use of physical cash, members of the public are again advised to continue to embrace alternative modes of payment,” it noted.

Health / Wale Akinlotan: Police Officer Slumps, Dies In Lagos Days After Suspect’s Bite by NCBLOG: 6:24pm On Nov 08, 2023
A Police Constable attached to the Lagos State Police Command, Wale Akinlotan, has slumped and died while on duty at Ilupeju police division.

DAILY POST learnt that the policeman enrolled into the Nigeria Police Force in 2018 and has once served at the Lagos Police Public Relations Office, as one of its media men.

The Graduate of Mass Communication from the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Akinlotan, slumped on Monday while at his station in Ilupeju, where he served as the orderly to the DPO.

Although the cause of Akinlotan’s death is yet unknown, DAILY POST gathered that the young man was just recovering from injuries sustained from a bite by a suspect.

The Deceased had reportedly assisted in apprehending the suspect who tried to escape from police custody.

“In the course of capturing the suspect, he bit Wale on his shoulder, his fingers and others,” a source told our correspondent.

Wale himself had posted videos of the injuries sustained during the incident on Tiktok on October 19 saying, “Job hazard. Thank God for life, Human bite is worse than scorpion/snake venom.”

The policeman has since been buried at a cemetery in Lagos State.

When he was contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, did not pick calls to his mobile.

In a text message, Hundeyin told our correspondent to send him an SMS, but he has yet to reply since Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Akinlotan’s sudden death has sparked reactions from police officers, many of whom complained of poor welfare on the job.

According to officers who spoke to our correspondent, Akinlotan’s death was one of scores of similar deaths that occur among police personnel of various ranks across the nation.

This, they blamed on the lack of rest among officers of the force.

“They won’t give us time to rest. Nobody cares about our health at work. Even when you’re sick, they will tell you to bring a medical report before asking you to go and treat yourself. You work many shifts a day. They won’t approve annual leave for us. Tell me how officers won’t continue to drop dead. It’s sad we keep losing officers to avoidable circumstances,” some officers told our correspondent in Lagos.

Gunmen Suspected to be kidnappers invaded Gandu community located about two kilometres away from the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) Nasarawa State, and shot a 300-level student of Sociology Department.

It was gathered that the gunmen who stormed the community around 8.30pm on Monday, November 6, 2023, also kidnapped a popular businessman during the attack.

An eyewitness who spoke to Punch said the incident has caused fear among residents of the area.

The student was shot by the bandits and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he is taking treatment. Our prayer is that he recovers fast because the situation was a serious one,” the source said.

"Our lives are no longer safe, owing to the persistent attacks and kidnapping of students, and other criminal activities in this environment.

"Our examinations are around the corner and we cannot go to class to read in the night any more for fear of being attacked or molested by people suspected to be kidnappers.”

Reacting to the incident, the State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, expressed concern over the growing insecurity around tertiary institutions in the state

The Governor stated this on Tuesday during a visit to the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Lafia over Monday night’s attack.

While registering his sympathy with the management of the institution over the sad incident, Sule reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensure that security is enhanced around student residential areas in the state to curtail the issues of insecurity.
