Dear all,

The problem is a lot deeper than the registration process. We currently offer .com.ng domains for N1000 which is much cheaper than .com in Nigeria (We offer this for N1,750).

On several presentations, with larger clients, we have suggested the registration of .com.ng, and the reply was:

'we do not want people to know we are a Nigerian company'.

Strange considering the address and phone numbers on the site is Nigerian.

Our clients are generally well educated and traveled, so it does come as a surprise.

Smaller companies, our main target market, on the other hand are open to ideas.

You can either register through http://db.register.net.ng/ - which is free or we can help you with the set up and registration @ N2,500 per year (www.darwin.com.ng).

It will take approximately 2 to 3 weeks whichever option you choose.

Thanks, the comments were helpful,

On point one - cant really remove the pictures from the front page and replace them with links, because the is called purefoto. Testing wa done on using a dial up connection and user studies says the lead time is acceptable. But your point is a valid one - we just dont want to loose the main reason or the site.

On point 2 - a slide show is available and we are working on the labelling. It is currently a 'cheesey' image at the top centre (2 slide looking things - clicking on this will open up a slideshow) - it should do exactly as you have suggested . The label will be sorted in due course.

Thank you for this - we will work on the initail load time (maybe by reducing thumbnail sizes and the labels).

Hello,

I am not sure we are allowed to place urls here but well if it dissappears it means we are not.

Contact www.darwin.com.ng - although there is a charge (N2,500) it takes the hasle out of the whole process.

You will need an RC number and a physical Nigerian address.

The current situation keeps cyber squatters at bay - if I want a domain for telephonesupport.com.ng I will probably get it without some teenager asking me for a kings ransom.

You seem to have it all worked out anyway so I am sure why you are complaining - you certainly get the job done sooner that I could - I cannot guarantee 3 days for a Nigerian domain name!

Your post from another thread: "Go to http://psg.com/dns/ng/ng.txt, fill the form in and send to jomoal99@yahoo.com
I will get it done for you in maybe 3 days. The most important parts are you contacts in nigeria and number (6j). If you can sort that out then you will have a .com.ng name in days"

Your information is not correct. Please visit http://www.domaindirectors.com/domains/restrictions.htm. or http://www.domainthenet.com/eu_domain_help.html for .eu restrictions.

While restrictions are bad things for cybersquatters etc I certainly agree that there should be location restrictions. Can the process of registering the domain be faster - certainly, are the requirements problematic I dont think so.

Dear my2cents,

Thanks for your reply.

I am sorry you did not find what you were looking for on the site.

Darwin are currently working on cataloging the hotels in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, which is a time consuming process as they also take the pictures and upload the files. Once this is done they will work on other states.
The Trust Issue - we visit most of the venues physically and go the extra mile to make sure that the content on the sites are correct. As far as projects I am involved with promoting - well the guys at Darwin have managed to make a success of what they do and have the trust of their clients. From what I can remember you are the first person to bring up the word trust when it comes to Darwin.

I will send some zymes to Darwin to speed up the process.

I have seen .com.ng and other top level Nigerian domains being sold online for up to $150 per year. I think the actual retail price is probably about $25.

The main problems people have when registering these domains are:

1. DNS Issues - the secondary server MUST be in a physical location
quite separate from the primary, and that the two MUST be on completely
separate international backbone providers. (Most hosting facilities do not have this option)
2. Requirements for specific domains - RC Number required for .com.ng etc,

3. Administrative contact required in the company - email/phone/full name (company gets a phone call to confirm).
4. Company with a physical address in Nigeria

Items 1 can be sorted by either ordering a DNS service from http://darwindirect.net (currently N1000 per year) or by buying a hosting your intended .com.ng website there
Item 2 - make sure prequalify your clients in accordance with the list below:
[li]Schools granting baccalauriat degrees <name>.edu.ng[/li]
[li]Commercial <name>.com.ng (most have an RC number)[/li]
[li]Governmental entities <name>.gov.ng[/li]
[li]Not for profit organizations <name>.org.ng[/li]
[li]Network infrastructure (i.e. isp routers) only <name>.net.ng[/li]
Get the right contact name, phone number and email address from your client, fill in this - http://psg.com/dns/ng/ng.txt and send to randy bush by email : randy@psg.com

You will get an OK reply in about 2 weeks if all is well.

The DNS Service on http://darwindirect.net cost only N1000 per domain per year = $6

Encourage your clients to register .ng it could be profitable.

Questions and insults welcomed!

Webmasters / Re: Signonafrica.net? by netzymes(m): 4:42pm On Sep 11, 2006
I dont think signonafrica are to blame for what people choose to do with the hosting space they are provided. If a shop sells a knife or a gun and you go out and stab or shoot someone is the shop to blame?

I am sure a simple request for information would have been complied with by signonafrica or anyother hosting company for that matter.

That is just my humble opinion.

You have to be careful when selecting an agent to provide these services. Try and do as much home work as you can. There are a few site where you can get detailed bios of agents including their pictures and contact details. Just go to google and search for 'Nigerian Homes'.

Timmy,

Thanks - I just dont want people spamming my normal mail account. I noticed it when I was writing the post and I was expecting some 'agro' for it. Luckily your comments were polite and professional.

We are seeking partnerships for specific products only and we already work that way with some companies. I know what you mean it can and probably will happen but for us it is worth the try. That is why we are looking for business people and not dotcommers.

Thanks again.

Dear All,

At the end of the day it is down to the client who they want to select for the work. I don't mind going into presentations against bad and/or inexperienced companies or people. It is my job to show the client what I can offer and how my product/service is better than the other guys. If he selects the other team so be it and go luck to them.

Personally, I don't agree with banning people and/or with government legislation (they have other issues to deal with).

The most important skills in the business is sales and marketing of the web as a tool for business, yourself and your skills in that order.

To be successful as a business you need to generate the right revenues based on your initial plans. I am assuming you have the skills or know where to get them from - there is no shortage of good web developers. Generating the required volume of business is where the problem lies for people starting out.

Business / Re: What Business Can I Start With 4,000 Naira? by netzymes(m): 2:21pm On Jun 29, 2006
Look for another job locally to either raise money or build a career. Visit the fast food restaurants and ask the managers what you can do, hotels always looking for temp staff while in that job plan properly. Running a business is not for everyone and most of them fail.

My advise ---> Get a Job in a shop, restaurant or office - if they could make use of your IT skills as well then better. Research a business/industry properly before making any moves.

Hi Buddie,

I will probably start by focussing on creating something that the community will value. Once they relate the site as a value service you can then charge for adverts from people in the estate with companies, or people who want to promote a particular service to the estate - diesel suppliers, water suppliers, furniture companies, security companies etc.

If you start by trying to get the residents to pay you might not get off the ground.

They could probably pay a nominal fee for an estate email address.

Hope this helps
