Senator Godswill Akpabio, who has a pending case before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission following allegations of stealing over N100bn from the coffers of Akwa Ibom State when he was governor, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The APC-led Federal Government has welcomed him with open arms and political analysts believe the defection could make the former governor to evade corruption trial, raising questions about President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war.

Unsurprisingly, the senator representing Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday resigned from his position as the Senate Minority Leader. A day later, he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

Hundreds of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State have announced their defection from the ruling party to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saying they left because of political patronage.

A Chieftain of the party, Chief Osamede Adun, the Aiyobahan of Bénin Kingdom, who led others in the defection, said that he and his followers left the party because of abandonment and attitude of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Also among the defectors were a former APC Chairman for Orhionwon LGA in Edo State, Mr. Mathew Ehigie and a former Council Chairman of Ovia Northeast LGA, Mrs. Lucy Omagbon.

Senator Godswill Akpabio has formally defected to the national ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at a mega rally held at the Ikot Ekpene township stadium on Wednesday.

No fewer than 30 APC’s senators and members of National Working Committee (NWC) were on hand to receive the ex-senate minority leader, Akpabio.

The senate Majority leader, Sen. Ahmed Lawan, who introduced his colleagues spoke on Akpabio whom he described as a nationalist and patriot who believes in Nigeria’s unity.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Uche Secondus, has called on the United Kingdom to expel President Muhammadu, who he accused of hiding in England to allegedly undermine democracy in Nigeria.

He said that Britain should not allow its environment to be turned into what he called “a haven for anti-democracy conspirators.”

Secondus said in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Mr Ike Abonyi, that the President left the country for the UK for 10 days’ leave to enable the nefarious activities they lined out against democracy to be executed in his absence.

Operatives of the Department of State Services are at the moment preventing Senators, members of the House of Representatives and workers from entering the National Assembly.
The operatives had been stationed there from about 2am.
This was shortly after an aide of the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, raised the alarm about a meeting between the Director General of the DSS, Lawal Daura, and about 30 senators elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

It appeared like a scene from a movie when in September 2015, operatives of the Department of State Services stormed the Akwa Ibom State Government House reportedly confiscating arms and millions of dollars.

Although Senator Godswill Akpabio had left government three months earlier, his successor, Udom Emmanuel, had yet to move into the Government House fuelling rumours that Akpabio was still living there.

Characteristically, the Peoples Democratic Party in a statement by its then acting Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, issued a statement condemning the raid on the Government House, describing it as an attack on democracy.

The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Mr Onofiok Luke, who led other members on a solidarity visit to Governor Udom Emmanuel at the Government House, Uyo, said they were there to show their support and solidarity based on the superlative performance of his administration.

He said, “We came here today, to show our support and solidarity to His Excellency the governor and to show that that support is based on the superlative performance that he has been able to put on the ground for the Akwa Ibom people.”

Reacting to Akpabio’s visit to President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, Omokri said in a tweet, that even the Economic and Financial Crimes Comission (EFCC), will “pass over” him.

Right activist- lawyer Mr. Femi Falana, (SAN) has said lawmakers who defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ought to resign from the legislature.

In a statement made available to The Nation yesterday, Falana advised the defectors, who are mostly members of the Reformed- All Progressives Congress (R-APC), to seek a fresh mandate from the electorate.

Fifty-three members of the National Assembly dumped the ruling party and moved to the opposition, with most of them citing division as their reason for leaving.

Cristiano Ronaldo could pay almost £17m after settling a tax evasion case with Spanish tax authorities but he is unlikely to serve a prison sentence.

Ronaldo, who moved from Real Madrid to Juventus for a fee of around £105m in July, will be fined £2.8m and sentenced to 24 months in prison, the prosecutor said on Friday, although under Spanish law a sentence of under two years for a first offence can be served on probation.

The Portuguese international is accused of evading £5.1m in taxes. He has denied the allegations.
