Nigeria's former president, Goodluck Jonathan says Nigerians should be responsible for selecting leaders through a democratic process and not by the judicial system, IGBERETV reports.

He said this on Saturday, March 18 after he and his wife, Patience voted in the governorship and state assembly election.

Addressing journalists after casting his vote in Otuoke, in Ogbia Local Government Area (LGA) of Bayelsa state, Jonathan said;

“I believe that Nigerians have decided that they must select their leaders. Any country that the ballot papers cannot select its leaders, that country is doomed.

“So, we must form a system where the ballot papers must decide who leads us, either at the level of the president, governors, and at the level of parliamentarians; not the courts. The ballot papers should select the leaders.”

Jonathan commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) but condemned the burning of electoral items by thugs in four wards under Constituency 2 in the Ogbia LGA.

“In terms of the general security of the elections, it is peaceful here but I am disturbed because, within my local government, I learnt that the state constituency 2, there were crises and materials have been burnt,” he stated.

“The police must make sure they arrest all those involved. If they feel challenged, they should go to the governor and get the military involved.

“All those involved in that act must be arrested and prosecuted and we are all watching. If the police fail to do that, we will feel terribly disappointed. Nobody should mess up our electoral system.

“The country is moving and some criminals cannot push us backwards. The world is watching Nigeria.”

A 37-year-old woman, Blessing Edet, has been arraigned before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja, for allegedly defaming the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, IGBERETV reports.

Blessing Edet pleaded not guilty to the six-count charge brought against her by the Nigerian Police.

The charge read;

“That you, Blessing Edet, 37, of No. 18 Buchanan Crescent Wuse II, Abuja, on or before April 11, 2020, sent messages or other matter with the captioned ‘names of married women/politicians’ wives sleeping with Gov. Emmanuel loading through your Facebook page.”

She was also accused of sending a message with the caption “So, we are going dirty. It’s time to break the final table, stay tuned,” through her Facebook page.

It was further alleged that she wrote on Facebook,“Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Agriculture, Dr Glory Edet, was the actual First Lady of Akwa Ibom, who has overthrown the real wife of the governor.”

Justice Mohammed who presided over the case, granted Edet bail in the sum of N500,000 with a surety in the like sum. The surety should be a civil servant or somebody with a reasonable means of income.

Edet was also asked to deposit her passport with the court registry. Failure to meet the terms will lead to her being remanded at Suleja Correctional Centre pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions. The judge then adjourned the matter till May 10 for trial.

The family of Professor Gertrude Nnanjar Njar, the Commissioner for Women Affairs in Cross River State who was kidnapped over one month ago has appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to help rescue her, IGBERETV reports.

Armed men dressed in military fatigue kidnapped Prof Gertrude in the early hours of February 1, 2023, on Atamunu Street in Calabar while on her way to the office in her official Renault car.

According to the petition signed by one Prince Odey Oyama, dated March 2, 2023, the family said that the kidnappers drove a white Hilux and had since demanded a N150m ransom through phone number 09074056593.

The petition reads in part: “It is one month now since her kidnap without any positive results. This has given our entire family, community, friends and well-wishers deep concern.”

They called on the IGP to use his office to assist in tracing the woman.

At the time the incident happened, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Eric Anderson, assured that the state government would do everything possible to rescue her.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that it never issued a fresh directive to commercial banks to obey last Friday’s judgement of the Supreme Court ordering the circulation of the old naira notes alongside the new ones until December 31, IGBERETV reports.

There was confusion among commercial banks and business operators following the non-issuance of a directive by the CBN on receiving the old N500 and N1000 notes.

CBN spokesman, Isa Abdulmumin, who spoke to newsmen, said the apex has not issued an official statement.

A senior management source also said;

“Both the old and new notes are legal tender, and banks are currently issuing them to customers. Nigerians should not reject any note, whether old or new.”

While the Nigeria 2023 presidential elections was ongoing, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, announced it's operatives on Saturday morning,February 25 arrested a woman with 18 voter cards in the Badarwa area of Kaduna, Kaduna State, IGBERETV reports.

The EFCC also arrested party agents buying votes through bank transfers to voters in Abuja FCT and a man for alleged vote buying with N194,000 at Gidan Zakka polling unit, Goron Dutse area of Kano Municipal Local Government.

The woman, said to be a member of the support group of one of the leading political parties, also had in her possession a 17-page list containing names of eligible voters, their bank details and phone numbers as accredited under Badarwa/Malali Ward 01 and 08, Kaduna North Local Government Area of the State.

She was arrested by the EFCC undercover operatives who pretended like they had voter cards and were desperate to sell them.

As at the time of this report, she is being grilled by operatives of the Kaduna Zonal Command of the EFCC, to unravel other members of her syndicate who she claims are also collecting voter cards and paying monies through PoS or direct bank transfers.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the results of Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections will be declared as quickly as possible, IGBERETV reports.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who spoke at a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, February 24, also said that the process will not suffer any encumbrance due to the recent cash crunch triggered by the naira re-design policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

He said;

“I just want to say that we will ensure that it (result declaration) will be done speedily. I can’t put a finger on the number of days or number of hours it will take, but it will be done speedily. We are aware of the anxiety and the need for us to conclude the process quickly, it will be concluded quickly.

“It is not all our operations that are paid for by cash. In fact, the bulk of our procurement for both goods and services is done electronically, but we need a small amount of money to pay for the unbanked who render critical services, particularly at the local level.

“We anticipated this challenge and interacted with the Central Bank, they promised us that the little amount we need to pay for services in cash, they will make the funds available to us and they have done so.

“And these funds have already been accessed by our state offices for elections which is why the movement of personnel and materials in the last couple of days has gone on unhindered. So, I must give credit for our relationship with the Central Bank in that regard. So, the process won’t suffer any encumbrance as a result.”

Gunmen have attacked the campaign convoy of the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for Enugu North/South Federal Constituency, Oforchukwu Egbo, on Wednesday, 22nd February 2023, IGBERETV reports.

The incident happened at Eke-Otu in Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area of the state. Driver of one of the buses in the convoy was killed during the attack. It was gathered that his body was burnt with the vehicle.

In the evening of the same day, Labour Party senatorial candidate for Enugu East senatorial district, Mr Oyibo Chukwu, was attacked and killed by gunmen along with five of his supporters in Amechi.

The presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu dipped his hand in his pocket while other presidential candidates - Obi and Sowore placed their hands on their chests during recitation of National Anthem at the Peace Accord meeting held on Wednesday, IGBERETV reports.

The remains of eight students of Madonna University, Elele, Rivers State, who died in an auto crash on their way to Taraba State from Port Harcourt, have been laid to rest, IGBERETV reports.

The incident happened on Saturday, February 18, at the TTC/Special Science School junction, Abakaliki in Ebonyi State while the students were travelling home from school on account of the forthcoming general election. Seven other students reportedly survived the incident with varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Alex Ekwueme Teaching Hospital Hospital in Ebonyi State.

The mass burial was held on Tuesday morning, February 21, at the Magami Christian Cemetery in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

A Facebook user, Tony Matinjah identified one of the victims as his brother, Amamzala Donald Matinjah, a 300 level Optometry student.

A woman has shared a video of dyed old 1,000 Naira notes given to someone as new notes, IGBERETV reports.

The cash was allegedly given by a POS operator trying to pass it off as the new notes.

An elderly woman was burnt alive when gunmen razed houses on Tuesday, 21st February 2023, at Amagu Ihube community in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo state, IGBERETV reports.

The woman was in the home of a retired Director of Department of Security Service, Emeka Ngwu, when the house was set ablaze and she was burnt in the fire.

Other houses burnt are the country homes of the Imo State commissioner for youths and sports, Emeka Okoronkwo, the country home of a former Dean of the Law Faculty of the Imo State University, Owerri, Nnamdi Obiaraeri, who served as Commissioner for information, youth and sports and land and urban planning, respectively during the administrations of former governors of the state, Ikedi Ohakim and Rochas Okorocha.

Two houses belonging to two other prominent sons of the area were torched. Okoronkwo confirmed the attack on his house to newsmen on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Confirming the attack, Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye said the police had launched an investigation into the incident, adding that no arrest had yet been made.

Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje has accused the Central Bank of Nigeria of causing “COVID-23” with its Naira redesign policy, IGBERETV reports.

Speaking during the distribution of palliatives at the government house on Monday, February 20, Ganduje claimed that Kano residents are the most affected by the “unfortunate development”.

He said;

“We didn’t invite this situation, neither did we pray for it. We don’t welcome it at all. We gave similar palliatives during the COVID-19 days,” Ganduje said.

“Today our citizens are being faced with COVID-23 caused by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“We earlier thought it was a simple disease, but unfortunately it turned out to be a very serious virus.

“This virus which came from the CBN has affected all our commercial banks, our POS, our ATM machines, and all other things associated with this.

“We will not stop blaming the CBN for this economic blunder. We love our people. Therefore, anything that will disturb their well-being must be rejected.”

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar has reacted to the issue of Naira scarcity which has led to controversy across the country, IGBERETV reports.

The Sultan who appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to address the problem to prevent an uprising, added that it has brought hunger and anger in the country.

Speaking at a two-day conference by the Kano State government on livestock reforms and mitigation of associated conflicts, the Monarch said;

"Let's keep politics aside. The issues of development, especially for the common man, (should be prioritised).

"These people that God Almighty gave leadership over, one day, God forbid, will rise (against us).

The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele has warned Nigerians not to take Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidate for granted, IGBERETV reports.

According to Ayodele, Tinubu’s famous word, “Emilokan” has a deep spiritual manifestation.

The clergyman made this known through his spokesman, Oluwatosin Osho.

He said: ‘’Don’t joke with the chances of the APC, Don’t take Tinubu for granted, he is not old politically and he wants this presidency.

“His pronouncements are more spiritual than physical. He speaks with so much authority, his pronouncements are more spiritual but Nigerians think he is playing.

‘’The word ‘Emilokan’ is very spiritual, don’t take Tinubu for a joke with this word. ‘Emilokan’ should wake up the PDP and Labour party from sleeping. The word is more spiritual than physical. If you don’t want Tinubu to win, attack ‘Emilokan.’’

Today’s visit to our indefatigable Client – Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu- at the DSS detention facility, Abuja, where he is still being unconstitutionally held, was led by our erudite Lead Counsel - Professor Mike Ozekome, SAN,CON, OFR.

Our indefatigable Lead Counsel seized the opportunity offered by the visit to discuss the present health condition of Onyendu. Onyendu carefully narrated to him the non-provision of proper medical care to the barrage of life-threatening illnesses he is faced with.

Of very particular concern is the fact that the DSS have no adequate medical facilities to treat Onyendu's deteriorating health condition.
Onyendu seriously lamented about severe pains particularly on his left ear. He also recounted that a previous scan at the instance of the SSS revealed that he must undergo an advanced surgical procedure to repair his left ear drum that has become greatly impaired by the severe torture and beating he received from agents of the Federal Government when he was forcibly kidnapped in Kenya and savagely renditioned back to Nigeria in June, 2021.

Generally, Onyendu needs urgent advanced medical treatment and surgical operation to address his deteriorating health condition,especially on his left ear. He narrated how the DSS doctor had emphatically told him that if after 45 days from November 18,2022,when he was examined, his case had not improved, then he must undergo immediate surgery to save whatever remains of his left ear. He lamented that several reminders and pleas that the DSS carried out their own medical doctor's instructions have met a brick wall. Being held in a solitary confinement, the DSS has also bluntly refused him access to his private doctor for independent medical assessment as ordered by the court.

Our legal Iroko, Ozekhome, painstakingly took comprehensive notes of Onyendu's entire medical concerns and has immediately swung into action with full legal initiatives to forestall any untoward eventualities.

The man of letters spent quality time in his briefing with Onyendu, as he updated Onyendu on the current status of our appeal before the Supreme Court which the Federal Government is deliberately forestalling.

In view of the length of time allotted to our erudite Lead Counsel for this all-important briefing, and considering the overall time limit for the visit which does not even permit a joint conference of two lawyers with Onyendu's, I could not personally meet with Onyendu today. I will therefore meet with him on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the suit which we had earlier filed to compel the Department of State Services and its Director General, to allow Onyendu access to his medical doctors and medical records comes up this week before the Federal High Court, Abuja.

As usual, Onyendu thanked you all, millions of his irrepressible followers and dogged supporters for standing shoulder- to- shoulder with him in this trying period. He is thankful, more importantly, for your unceasing prayers, even as he urged you all to continue to sustain the prevailing peaceful tempo as you have always done.
