VALENTINE DAY AND CHRISTIAN'S NON PARTICIPATION

Brief History

Valentine day is feast celebrate on the 14th february of every year in many country of the World. It has become a very popular feast invlolving the youth especially.It said to be associated with "LOVE". However, many youth are ignorant of the origin. Today; we want to have closer look at this feast for better understanding.

Actually, nobody has clear idea as to who is Saint Valetine, and there is no agreement among the historians concernong the real origin of ths feast. Some believe that Valentines' Day began in ancient Rome where February 14th, was a holiday to honour Juno, the Qween of the Romans gods and goddess. During this period, boys and girls were seperated. The girls names were written on piece of paper and is inserted into jars. Each boy then drew a girl's name who would becomeshis partner throughout the feast. After the festival, the pairs ketp seeing each other and in some case eventually got married to each other.

From the forgoing history, it si clear what origin of the origin of Valentine's day is. Definitely,  there is no record of it in the Bilbe. Hence, it is not Bilical.

However, many youth will have some question in there minds which may include
1) Why was Valentine's Days become populer?
2) What are the social and spirirtual implications to Christian youth today?
3) What should be the atitude to Valentine's Day ?

Some of the reasons  for the popularirty of Valentine's Day are:

i) Religious Belief: Valentine's Day is basically of Romans Cotholic Origins. In the Roman Catholic diary, there are three Saint Valentines that were said toto have been martyred. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius I established the feast of Saint Valentine by incliding him among those ", whose names are justly reverenced among men, " And because they believed trongly in adoration of saint.

Valentine's Day does not come and go without its socal/spiritual consequenses and implications among youths. Due to the feeling of infactuations(unreasonable feelings of love that one has for short time) that goes along with the Day coupled with immoral expression of such "love" the consequenses that are usually terrible. These include:
i) Lost of Chastity
ii) Unwanted prgnanacy

Legends vary on how the martyr's name became connected with romance: the date of his death may have become mingled with the feast of Lupercalia, a pagan festival of love, or with the ancient belief that birds first mate in the middle of February. In modern times Valentine's Day is a day of special romantic sentiment and gift-giving among lovers

If some christians are really serious with this non-participation thing because of the pagan origin of the valentine's day, then they might as well give up on christmas, easter, and Jesus himself because they all have pagan origins.Some christians can be unnecessarily dour in their beliefs.Even valentine's day is now taboo?

Valentine's Day is a good day. It is not a biblical practice.

Not who but what, and that what is LOVE.I think it is worthy thing to put aside a day to remind humanity how important it is to love one another.
If we can set aside days to honor mythical figures like jesus, we might as well do the same for L.O.V.E, no?

when roman soldiers refused to go to war, pope claudius II banned all mariages. the roman priest believed to be the origin of st valentine was beaten and beheaded for performing marriages agaist the ban. he sacrificed his life for love. feb 14 was the day he was killed, because he valued love above his life.
