*Abdoulaye Wade said Haitians could "return to their origin"

Senegal's president says he will offer free land and "repatriation" to people affected by the earthquake in Haiti.
President Abdoulaye Wade said Haitians were sons and daughters of Africa since Haiti was founded by slaves, including some thought to be from Senegal.
"The president is offering voluntary repatriation to any Haitian that wants to return to their origin," said Mr Wade's spokesman, Mamadou Bemba Ndiaye.

Tuesday's earthquake killed tens of thousands and left many more homeless.
Buildings have been reduced to rubble, the distribution of aid is slow, and people have been flooding out of the devastated capital, Port-au-Prince.
"Senegal is ready to offer them parcels of land - even an entire region. It all depends on how many Haitians come," Mr Bemba Ndiaye said.
"If it's just a few individuals, then we will likely offer them housing or small pieces of land. If they come en masse we are ready to give them a region."

The spokesman emphasised that if a region was given, it would be in a fertile part of the country rather than in its parched deserts, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Yoruba people say na house we look be before we give pickin name. Even the bible talk say "a spec in your eye, and you try to remove a log in mine" Translation be say sort out your bullsh.it internal problem before you go offering help. Whatever is offered to haiti, I am sure many Nigerians can do with that help.

Thumbs up to Senegal, that is Senegal and we aint them. It sucks when people think because we are a so called"giant" of Africa that we have to be seen as big players on the world stage. Oh give me a break! USSR was bigger than us, but when internal problem wasn't sorted. . . .where is her today? Many fragments as a result.

Perhaps if we didn't have avoidable "bullsh.it internal problems", Nigeria would naturally be the giant of Africa. Instead, tiny Senegal is showing us up on the international scene; what they have done is the sign of true leadership and love for fellow blacks; at a time Nigeria, with a 5th of the black population, has no leader, due to tribalism and hatred for one another (talkless of loving the wider black diaspora).

This is a time of shame.

Well depends on how you looks at it. Senegal is smaller as made up of few ethnics group. This nation will clearly have lesser issues and easier to govern.

Whatever the case, there is nothing to be ashamed about. It is not a must we get involved in world politics in my opinion. A few nations are "politically neutral" on the world stage and are clearly doing better than us.

But this isn't politics, it is about humanity. Our lack of humanity is also the reason why we are failing internally.

It is. The moment Nigeria offers to donate money, there will be outcry and questions of why is not been used at home. It become politicised.

Don't you think that Haitians, despite their ordeal, might publicly turn down the offer if we make one?

Haiti is in no position to turn down offers. The whole country has been wiped out. The minimum any human can do is offer help.

You clearly haven't watched different news channels to see the devastation. Just imagine a place like Ojuelgba or another prominent market place looking like a nuclear bomb just dropped.

They need all the help they can get. I will be very surprise if they turn down anything.

The truth is that, currently , Nigeria has no homogeneous foreign policy strategy. Ojo Madueke says one thing and Turai/Yayale/Kurfi/Ruma/Aondoakaa decides otherwise. The end result is that nothing gets done and Nigeria ends up looking idiotic because egotistic usurpers cannot agree on how to misrule us.

Besides, the president of Senegal is not in Saudi Arabia. Now, if Jonathan really wants to send out a serious signal, he should fly to Haiti and sympatize with them.

Why not a phone call? Why fly down there just to sympathize? Gosh, he will make a mockery of him and those who rule Nigeria.

Also, since the US are now in control of Haiti airport [Signed over by Hati president to the Americans] I will urge them to deny any plane from Nigeria carrying yeye politician a landing permission.

You are missing the point. How many of those 150million in Nigeria right now give a monekys about what is happening in haiti? It is people like you, me and others who bothered about current affairs etc and trust me, we are in the minority. This is nothing to do with Nigeria and as such, let us stay out of it.

To suggest a VP needs this kind of stunt for public ratings is sickening.

You are a joke. Here, let me explain in simple terms again to you. Nigeria have internal problem that is crippling us. To offer help to an outsider at this point is unwise.

If you sort out your issues internal, then the world will take your country serious. grin

Definitely Haiti will turn down our offer, Abeg if any one knows how to get a Haiti Visa let me know. I prefer to stay there than this CURSED land called Nigeria where the STUPID NORTHERNERS with little or no education holds power to everything,

Imaging close to 2months with no president.  Lord Luggard you do well oh!, na you bring this set-back to us,

By God's grace the northern and southern nigeria will be divided soon. WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!!!!!! in common. Absolutely nothing.

How can you relate this tragedy to world politics This kind of view is warped mehn! Not impressive at all, especially coming from someone that definitely knows better.
Everybody should help. Its not only rich people or wealthy nations  that should participate in assisting to alleviate the hardship the Haitians are facing.
Everybody, whether you live in the Hamptons or you hawk gala on the streets of Lagos, you can donate your little token.

Senegal has done good and they have shown again that we(Nigerians) are anything but the "giant of Africa".

Even by the end of this year and the next, we wouldn't have solved our problems. Why should sending members of our Red cross and a token military presense be such a big deal? Afterall, nations like Kenya haven't done much more than that.

As they say, it is the gesture that counts. Senegal can make a big gesture because they are far ahead of us at the moment, but there is no excuse for us not making even a token gesture. I can bet you that some countries out there helping Haiti are either at war or have some sort of civil strife.

When was the last time our Red cross was actively involved in incident similar to this? WHat experience and man power do our Red cross have? While I understand it is an international organisation. They won't waste their time picking people from Nigeria, they will have people who can actually make change and have heard experience of some sort.

Why will you want to send in our military? Say what? Again apply the above question here. Having said that, I really do not see the need. Why not send in those redcross and military to the Niger Delta zone? Or patrol the streets of those state wanting sharia? Why haiti? You see how easy these things can become politics?

The earlier we stop thinking we need to do something, the better you will see my point. Nigeria needs "Nigeria time" right now and not those things you are suggesting. grin

It is time like this that Nigeria should show why they have the largest population of blacks in the world.

alas, we dont even have President.

Mind you, we have about 101 Nigerian Police in Haiti, no news about their welfare to their families or Nigeria.

We can easily take about 1million Haiti, if they want to come.

Afterall, we took the Liberians about 300,000.

You don't have to agree with me sir. I merely pointed out how it will be a political issue if Nigeria offers to send help. Please tell me what help Nigeria can offer that cannot be of good use at home?

By the way, I am talking about help from the government, not individual citizens. Please show me what help Nigeria government can offer, and I will tell you where they can put that help to good use at home. smiley

Thankfully, people with such arguments are the tiniest of tiny minorities (nobody else has picked up on this so called "political" angle). If our Red Cross doesn't have experience (redundant argument considering our expansive involvement in peace keeping), the better thing to do would be to kill two birds with one stone and help the Haitians while giving our people disaster experience.
Your arguments are just that we should do nothing for no reason. That is obnoxious.

You really are not getting it. In situations like this, you send in experts, not someone who is inexperienced or wanting to gain experience. Our red cross may be experienced as part of a peace keeping forces in a war zone, but it  is not the same as a disaster zone.

For the record, a few charities organisation in the UK have refused to participate because they do not have the resources - Training, money and man power. Even though they have helped sometimes in the past. I mean, using your logic, these people should just go in because "help is needed". Our red cross going in will require security, housing etc. These will do nothing but stretch the little help available further. Hence why I asked you what training Nigeria's red cross have etc.

The US troops going in are people who are trained in these aspect of Humanitarian disaster.

I have raised many issues and questions, yet you appear to be knit-picking and not able to answer any one of them. Please explain to me why Nigeria should offer help, when we need those help at home. How hard is that to comprehend?

Everyday in Nigeria for many is a Natural disaster of epic proportions so let us look inwards and help those around who have some level of intelligence.
