Rather unscientific if you ask me. How were the I.Q measured? What do you mean by 'estimated I.Q' ? |
Re: I Q of Famous People by MyJoe: 3:20pm On Jan 27, 2010 |
illusion2: The question of the reliability of intelligence testing has occupied experts for ages. There is now a consensus in the psychology community that I Q tests are NOT a conclusive method of measuring aptitude or intelligence. Experts are always trying to improve the system and so different methods have been invented. One of my most favoured approaches to intelligence is the theory of multiple intelligences developed by American psychologist Howard Gardner. It appears the one used above is the traditional IQ test based on the system developed by American psychologist Lewis Terman, a method that uses a single score to grade set performances or responses. While IQ tests are not definitive, dismissing them as unscientific is flippant. I would not have thought that Sharon Stone (154) is anything near as smart as Albert Einstein (160), but If Bill Gates is reported to have scored 1590/1600 in the SAT, who can question the 160 assigned to him? Pick all the names you are familiar with on that list and recall their achievements or performance. Then pick the highest-scoring individual in the list, Leonardo da Vinci, and see if you can find any human being whose mind comes anywhere near his in depth. |

kkkossy: It is unknown whether Einstein ever took an IQ test. It is a safe guess that he would have scored highly had he done so. Einstein's IQ is frequently stated to have been "160" or "just above 160"; however, this is just somebody's guess for which I have been unable to find a source. I once read that he never took a standard IQ test, or if he did, he never made the results public. He was definitely a genius, but this was not primarily due to his IQ, but his amazing level on transcendental thinking. The intelligence quotient (IQ) is a measure of intellectual talent. The concept was stamped in 1912 by the German psychologist and philosophers Wilhelm Stern (1871-1938). The IQ is determined by the relation of intelligence age (I A) and the age (L A) of the person. In standardised test procedures (IQ test) with which the general intelligence is checked I A is determined. Then the IQ arises *100 from the formula IQ = (I A/L A). The evaluation happens by means of IQ scales which can be different, however. Thus, e.g., the Americans use the scales which admit IQ values to more than 200. Besides, the average value of most scales lies with an IQ of 100. This value corresponds to a normal talent. With the specification of the respective IQ' see the used IQ scale with must be stated. |

An IQ test in my mother tongue has proved a few years ago that I have an IQ of 184. It looks in such a way, as if we can surpass all Einstein, right, kosovo? Of course not really, but it is, nevertheless, a great feeling. |

And it failed to state if this is verbal IQ or performance IQ. |
Re: I Q of Famous People by MyJoe: 3:08pm On Feb 03, 2010 |
kkkossy: I can't make sense out of this one. Whoever informed you Nigerians have low IQ? kkkossy: It is understandable for people to go on and on about Einstein. Let's bear in mind, though, that average IQ score is 100, with a standard deviation of 70-130. A score of 130 and above is considered a genius IQ and makes the individual admissible to MENSA, the high IQ society. Based on the above, the 160 returned by Einstein is a very high genius score. onye_ngbu:In terms of achievement, comparing Einstein to Leonardo is an uninformed position. Einstein was a physicist and mathematician who made ground breaking discoveries. What about Leonardo? For those who don't know him, let me quote a portion of an encyclopaedia entry on him: "Leonardo is regarded as the consummate Renaissance man not primarily for his scientific accomplishments but because of his extraordinary range of achievements. Leonardo was a painter, sculptor, engineer, architect, physicist, biologist, and philosopher—and he was outstanding in each of these fields. Science influenced all of Leonardo’s activities; he believed in observing nature and carrying out experiments. As a painter, Leonardo studied the laws of optics and the optical structure of the eye; he studied human anatomy with the thoroughness of a medical surgeon to understand how to paint the torso. Leonardo’s ability to solve physics problems in the fields of static (stationary) and dynamic (moving) mechanics fortified his civil and military engineering work. Leonardo excelled at physics. He anticipated the principle of inertia, which would be demonstrated by Galileo nearly a century later. The inertia principle is the idea that an isolated body, not in contact with anything, will continue moving at a constant velocity forever. Understanding this concept required deep insight since it is not at all easy to imagine an abstract idea such as an “isolated body.” Leonardo knew that the speed of a falling body increases over time. He knew that perpetual motion was impossible as a source of power, and he invented a mathematical scheme for proving the law of the lever. Leonardo worked on the flow of water through pipes, designing an irrigation system and channels. He studied wave motion on water and extended this study to waves in the air and the laws of sound." So in addition to science, Leonardo made vast achievements in painting, sculpture and architecture. He not only recorded groundbreaking achievements in many many fields, he anticipated future developments in medicine, aeronautics and engineering. He drew aircrafts, which were made only hundreds of years later. He was a universal genius! Does IQ score determine achievements? No, of course. Because (1) No IQ test is perfect. (2) Some human beings make more effort and apply themselves better than others - Einstein may have had a better environment and applied himself far more than several other geniuses. But there may be a third reason why a lower score person can record more achievements than a high scorer: ☻ajali☺: Those who hold this view tell us that it is impossible to bring about great discoveries or inventions with the five senses we all possess. They believe that a SIXTH SENSE is required to achieve the extraordinary. How, for instance, would Michael Faraday, with his very limited education, know that there is electricity out there? beejaei:All those on that list consented for their IQ to be made public or the relevant data could be assessed otherwise. Obama has not made his IQ or information that can help assess it public. Even his SAT score is not publicly known. There have been several speculations, much of it useless. But he came second in his class of elite students, that says a lot. |
