Try harder. Same applies down in the South, but you hardly see people hacking one another down every sunday nights.

An educated mind is a liberated mind. Education is key my brother. Those Malo needs good education and not all those Madrassas that are mushrooming and springing up in all the northern part of the country.

What you see in the North is what you get, when this is the type of education you give to young ones.

quote author=mikeansy link=topic=428728.msg5873262#msg5873262 date=1271024433]
The constitution only recognises the use of Sharia law to resolve customary disputes like marriage, divorces, inheritance. But most importantly it says all parties to the disputes must consent to the law being used to resolve the matter.

It is illegal to use Sharia to resolve issues like theft, fraud and the current sharia criminal code launched in 12 Northern States is illegal.

Besides that you have hisbah going around Kano telling them they must sell Alcohol only in Baracks and Military quaters, that people can only dress in certain way on the streets. That is simply enforcing a certain way of life in these states and we all know that hisbah is sponsored by the Kano State Government. That is simply State practice of religion when a state government has a religious police enforcing a certain way of life.

What part of what I said above did you not understand?

Yes, the constitution made specific pronouncements on the customary aspect of sharia law - no doubt about that. You may also wish note that sharia courts presiding over such cases, mentioned by you, have been in existence long before the present constitution - I suspect even before independence, because I can recall my grandfather being one of such judges in Kaduna in the 1960's - its nothing new or limiting.

The above provision does not in anyway limit or prohibit any state in the federation (as you are wrongly assuming) from further making additional laws concerning sharia or otherwise as it deems fit; providing that such law does not contradict the constitution, and when/if it does, the constitution supercedes.

I repeat there is nothing illegal about the introduction of sharia by some states (otherwise the whole thing would have been legally stopped by now through court action), though you are free as a citizen or through any organisation such as CAN to try it - feel free.

As for hisbah (sharia police) yes it is true, and in this case, the federal government is rightly challenging it in court even though the matter is yet to be resolved; therefore the hisbah are still operating albeit under very low profile.

On the the issue of sale and consumption of alcohol, again you will have to appreciate the entitlement of any state to pass its own laws. In the case of Kano, it chose to ban alcohol (mind you, it didnt do it under sharia law but through state edict - there is a difference), not surprising that it had been finding it difficult to implement completely - much to the chagrin  and delight of those for and against the ban respectively.

Bottom line, states in Nigeria like those in America have a right to make laws and these can vary from one state to another. For example, not so long ago (in the 30's) there was a ban on alcohol in nearly all America untill it was repealed some years later. Similarly, some states have different penalties for drug and alcohol related offences, right up to death penalty.

In Nigeria some states have adopted sharia while some have not; nobody is imposing it on your head so I dont understand your beef.
Sharia is only for muslims or are you suggesting that muslims in Nigeria shouldn't have a right to be judged according to their belief - simply because you dont like it?

I know Sharia like the back of my hand, so try not to twist your explanation otherwise I will expose you here.

Simply put , we do not want Sharia in Nigeria , period. !

Anyone with a brain would realise it is relatively easy to reduce the likelihood of these attacks once the activity chain is identified, investment in modern equipments is made and a few of these barbarians are caught and are ruthless and viciously dealt with.

In regards to activity chain, it is obvious the perpetrators are resorting to middle of the night killing spree so as to catch the victim village unawares and avoid being visible to the state forces.

The reports of 500 being killed and the willingness to kill is obviously damaging Nigeria's economy and reputation immensely.

Get Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), Helicopters, patrol vans and horses.

If not that we have morons running the country (or in some cases half-dead Zombie that we have not seen for months), an intelligent government would have employed aerial machinery with good night vision to back and make the job of the security forces easier.

Why not employ UAVs to monitor and track the plains of the state at night. Maximum 4 would cover the whole of Plateau state.

- Each cost between $350K to $4.5m
- Can last between 40 - 80 hours in the air, so with good rotation, 4 can cover a 12 hour night
- It is not visible to the human eye as it is flying 60,000 feet in the air and can see a milk carton on the floor and with heat sensors, humans in the dark

So if any mauranding foolish herdsman feel they can gather at night and attack a village, shebi they would have to leave the vicinity and return to their base before Task Force reach there?

After an attack, it someone calls for help through their mobile, the police can get the drone's (already flying at 60,000 feet) operators to pick out the scattering motion of humans from the area, without the humans having a jack clue (especially since the killers are likely to be illiterate herdsmen) they are being tracked. Identify the human figures on the ground in motion or running continuously in the middle of the night, as most likely the attacked victims would be finding a place to hide after escaping their village but the perpetrators would be retreating to their own base.

With about 6 fast-moving air-force helicopters with machine guns stationed strategicly across the state, about 3 or 4 can be dispatched to track the targets likely running, beam them with flood lights and tell them not to move (or else be brutally machine-gunned). This helicopters should be able to reach places in 15 mins. Whilst the ground troops, if within reasonable range (they would be spread out anyway), can then arrive by patrol cars (or horses if the terrain demands) and arrest any batch caught (at least one or two of the perpetrators), people that are found out are not local to the area they were fleeing in the middle of the night after an attack, would without a doubt (I trust Naija police) recant which other people were with them. The rest can then be tracked later or permanently put on the run.

If these happens a few times, the morons would know it is dangerous to their lives to be going out to kill.

The machinery can then be reused against armed robbers in states with high robbery hotspots.

But our morons would rather use such money to increase Senators "Hardship Allowance".

@Ilugunboy
Just forget about the Gambari-killed-Fulani-kolejo-ninu altitude. And think about humans' lives at stake. The lost Beirom souls, some of them might even be related to your by blood, not by physical Hausa looks. I have heard of Mexicans praying one day, despite I don't speak Spanish. I noticed what they were saying was "Obbatala" my father and "Yemaja" my mother and Ashe for all.
They later told me that they are Yoruba de Mexico and later gave me their Santeria religion face book link: http://www.facebook.com/notes.php?id=16874513509&_fb_noscript=1

Who would have thought I have Spanish brothers that claim Yoruba origin and practice Yoruba religion. The startling part of it is that, there are millions of them out there.

Therefore, the premise of my argument is, don't say because they are not from the south, it doesn't border you.

So, what do you expect me to do?. These people are on a Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD), let them cancel one another out. We are tired of analysing and proferring the way forward for these determined folks.

mikeansy:

This claim that the crisis is political is very very very hollow.

Has the killings been PDP targeting ANPP? Has it been PDP targeting AC? are the kids butchered in Jos card carrying members of any political party?
Are you telling me that the chuches and Mosques burnt down in Jos sometimes on days of worship does not contain people of different political spectrum?
What is the basis of this claim that the crisis in Jos is political?

Look you can continue to live in denial but the facts remain the facts.

The proximate causes of the fight in Jos may be attributed to land, cattles, waters, Air etc. But the fact remains that the fundamental and remote causes of these fights are as old as the history of this country. If we dont address these issues we can never address the mistrusts that exists between us.

These issues include:
1. ill informed Indigene/Settler dichotomy
2. illegal practice of state religion against the provisions of section 10 of the constitution

we can either address these issues or pretend we have higher understandings of the problem while living in denial.
U are very correct.

break the chain of command in the military. That will solve Jos crises and Nigeria as a whole.
There is a chain of command controlled by the Hausa in the country, if left unchecked then Nigeria awaits a huge disaster

Don't mind them !

Only in the event of a major terrorist attack or similar issue would the president cut short an engagement.

Other smaller cases should be dealt with by the security apparatus if there is any !
