Nigeria are to host former world champions Argentina in an international friendly on 1 June.

The game will be held at the Abuja National Stadium.

The countries last met at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, when the South Americans won 1-0.

"It's massive news for us to get a high-profile game like this in Nigeria," said Nigeria Football Federation chairman Aminu Maigari.

"The team, fans and media deserves it and we are looking forward to welcoming big names in world football to our country come June."

Nigeria will use the match as a warm-up for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Ethiopia on the weekend of 4/5 June.

Argentina have won the World Cup twice, in 1978 and 1986.

Now all thats left is to ensure Nigeria doesnt burn after the elections in May. Errrrm one other thing, hope we wont end up playing Boca Juniors or River Plate cos Argentina without Messi, Mascherano , wont quite be Argentina. All the same, very good one.

True!!!!

Just saw highlights of the press conference on tv and the match is been put together by Guinness Nigeria PLC and it's been dubbed ''Guinness - The Match''.

The head of international football for the Argentine FA was at the Press Conference and speaking thru' an interpreter, he said they'll take the match very serious cos it'd be their last friendly match before the COPA America competition this year.

Tickets will be sold for N2500 but fans will get the opportunity to win tickets for the match through the Guinness crowns in a special promo. . .

GLO, Cadbury and other sponsors of the Super Eagles should follow suit and organise friendly matches against Spain, Brazil, Holland etc grin  .

Nigeria to host Argentina in June Friendly

LAGOS (AFP) - Nigeria will host Argentina in a friendly match on June 1 in Abuja, Nigerian officials announced on Wednesday.

The high-profile friendly will be financed by one of the team's leading sponsors, Guinness.

"We can confirm this match for June 1 in Abuja," said event organiser Devlin Hainsworth at an elaborate event in Lagos to announce the details of the match.

"This is a time to have some of the world's best players on Nigerian soil."

Musa Amadu, general secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), praised the match organisers for bringing a world-class team like Argentina to the country.

"It will be a big event because the fans have been asking for such a big match since we last hosted Brazil in Abuja in 2003," said Amadu.

The two teams last clashed in a World Cup group game in Johannesburg, South Africa last year, with the South Americans winning 1-0.

Argentina's other previous encounter against Nigeria at this level was in a 2002 World Cup group game, which they also won 1-0.
Officials disclosed that Argentina may also seek to arrange a match against Ghana during their visit to Africa.

Bring on Argentina!  grin

But to be honest, I reckon it's a wee bit too early for Siasia to be facing the Argies. Maybe in about a year or two's time would have been ideal, after the team must have solidified into a genuine fighting unit.

But then again, I guess you could say, what works like a baptism of fire? At least by facing the Argies now, THE TEAM becomes familiar with what they'll be up against at Brazil 2014, and work to that level from hereon.
