Bayelsa received 5,325,414,955.84 (Naira) in May 2004 from federal account (PDF document); the second highest in the nation. This works out to 3,126.42 Naira per citizen . The highest allocation-per-citizen ratio* in the country And this is just from federal account, the figure doesn’t include locally generated revenue. *Allocation-per-citizen comparison: Nassarawa state in northern Nigeria=609.22; Delta state another oil-producing state=1,562.35. Though Bayelsa is sparsely populated, it is one of the states in the oil-rich Niger-Delta - an impoverished region enveloped by years of endemic sectarian violence and decades of environmental degradation. With its natural resources - Bayelsa has a sizable portion of the oil and gas that bankrolls the Nigerian government - and based on the data presented above, it is mind boggling why the state remains so underdeveloped and its people impoverished. It can be argued that because of its very difficult terrain (riverine, swampy, marshland with mangrove vegetation), the cost of infrastructure development in Bayelsa is several times that of a “dry-land” state. This is a valid argument; however, with population of 1.7 million people, developing Bayelsa shouldn’t be a Herculean task - if the leaders know what they are doing. And this hasn’t been the case; with the likes of D.S.P Alamieyeseigha - the former governor, who’s now on trial for corruption - the fortune of the state has been grossly mismanaged. |

You guys haven't seen anything yet, just wait for the breath of fresh air  I remember asking same questions as this poster way back before elections and I couldn't get reasonable answer, then i knew the curse of bad leadership in nigeria may still linger on for a little while. I remember speaking to someone very close to jonathan himself four days back and he confessed that his greatest fear was GEJ was going to do to nigeria what he did to bayelsa - spending ever kobo in the treasury on projects all over the states with very little impact. He gave an example of a PVC manufacturing factory in bayelsa, the hospitals cited in communities without roads or speed boats to connect the lands. He said although the intentions of the projects were good but 'cos of lack of due deligence in examing how well the host community would benefit from such, the projects appear not to have made any impact on the people. His second fear was that GEJ doesnot have a mind of his own and that he confessed has been his greatest undoing despite the political luck that has smiled on him. To the ijaw warlord claiming Bayelsa is a pipped state hence no need for building bridges, modernized inland water ways and ports, suspended roads, mobile hospitals, etc, your generation will end up like the ones before you - permanent tenants in thier own land! This is one serious problem the IJAWS have - they WORSHIP whoever has money to give them DAILY not caring if the person is stealing from thier 'tommorrow bread' Alams today is still hailed in nightclubs and guest houses in Bayelsa as 'governor general' despite looting that state beyond believe whereas his counterpart from Edo State (lucky igbinedion) cannot walk the streets in Benin else he meets his end. |

in hindesight, with continued pressure, i think GEJ will perform, however the concern will be whether his performance will be enough to get the common nigeria to believe again in nigeria - i pray he performs otherwise we will be set back to 10years of under development. |

Well, considering how much backlash he got from the other side, I think the man has no other choice but to actually do something, even if not much, but enough to keep people seeing him the way they did during the election, or he ends up on the floor where Obasanjo, and others like him, live. Yes, he was able to wiggle through this time but I hope in 4 years, many more Nigerians will be exposed and educated on happenings enough not to allow themselves be bamboozled in the same way again. |
