A Growth On My Testicles Is This Normal? by ckamal: 4:49pm On Nov 09, 2011
I noticed there has been a little spherical ball in my testicles like over 7 years ago and when i went to the doctor,
i was examined and he told me it was just an hydrocele and that it is harmless.

Presently i noticed that it had grown a little bit in size than it use to be so i will like to know from any medical personel in the house if this is normal and i hope it wont affect my fertility as i am planning on settling down next year, actually i have been sexually active and every thing seems to be alright in my body.

So am just a little bit curious if there is any cause for alarm, please i don't want any immature comments, will be anticipating your mature comments on this.thanks

I doubt you have a hydrocele but rather a spermatocele.

Spermatocele is a cyst of a
tubule of the head of the
epididymis distended with barely watery fluid that
contains spermatozoa.
They vary in size from several millimeters to many centimeters.

Spermatoceles are generally not painful. However,
some men may experience discomfort from larger
spermatoceles.

CAUSES
Spermatoceles can originate as diverticulum
from the tubules found in the head of the
epididymis. Sperm formation gradually causes
the diverticulum to increase in size, causing a
spermatocele. They are due to continuity
between the epididymis and tunica vaginalis.

They are also believed to result from
epididymitis or physical trauma. Scarring, of
any part of the epididymis, can cause it to
become obstructed and may form a
spermatocele.

EXAMINATION
Spermatoceles can be discovered as incidental
scrotal masses found on physical examination by
a physician. They may also be discovered by self-
inspection of the scrotum and testicles.
Finding a painless, cystic mass at the head of the
epididymis, that is confirmed to contain fluid and can be clearly differentiated from the testicle, is generally sufficient.
If uncertainty exists, ultrasound
of the scrotum can confirm if it is spermatocele.
Consult a urologist.

TREATMENT
Small cysts are best left alone, as are larger cysts
that are an asymptomatic condition. Only when
the cysts are causing discomfort and are
enlarging in size, or the patient wants the
spermatocele removed, should a
spermatocelectomy be considered. Pain may
persist even after removal.
Spermatocelectomy can be performed on an
outpatient basis, with the use of local or general
anesthesia.
A spermatocelectomy will not improve fertility, so I hope you are not already compromised.

RECOMMENDATION

Do a Seminal Fluid Analysis before tying the proverbial 'knot'.

@ T- Spayne,i must say thanks alot for your enlightening comment,i find it very revealing, though i have not been feeling any pain but my own major worry is just that i dont want it to degenerate into a cancer or any other serious thing like infertility or the likes.

Malignant growths in the testes present mostly as solid, hard painless lumps initially but could become painful as they advance. Spermatoceles are soft, fluctuant and fluid filled to touch.
The key to differentiating benign from malignant testicular mass is to get examined by a urologist and get the ultrasound done.
However it worth mentioning a malignant tumor in the testes would kill you in 2 years, you've had this 7 years so, relax.

Is the growth painful
Is the size now significantlt bigger than what it was before now
At what age did you notice it
Has any medical treatment been done on it prior to now.
Your spermatozoa is it abnormal, i mean coloration and quantity

If your answers are yes I will suggest you immediately seek medical attention as no meaningful diagnosis can be done here on Nairaland

@ kamal
Try to visit another consultant and seek proper examination. Don't let them give you the it's- not-issue thing. Study the kind of prescription drugs you might be handed. Wishing you the best.

Sometimes we can be afraid to visit the doctor so that we might not receive the bad news

I must say thank u all for your responses so far,but i will like to point out that the size of my testicles are normal and the growth am talking about has just increased in size a little in the last 7 years and the colour and quantity of my semen is normal.

The last time i saw the doctor 7 years ago wasnt specifically for it and i only used the opportunity to tell him to examine me and he also did an ultra sound scan and also a physical examination which revealed that it was a normal and harmless growth and that it wont affect me in anyway,

I will be going for the seminal analysis test this weekend as adviced, but i think nothing is wrong with me cause even my fiancee doesnt even notice this anytime we are together so maybe am jst been too curious anyways.

Thanks for all your responses once again .

Any growth on any part of the body ISN'T normal. If it was, everyone would have them. If you got stuff growing on your balls, you need to have an expert take a look. You can visit your local GP who can then refer you to a specialist if there be a need to.

Nuff said smiley

Not just any doctor, see an Urologist ASAP. it might be nothing but you need to get as clear a picture as possible from a specialist.
Urologists can be found in most teaching hospitals.
