So guys, I'm in the US.
Here's my experience:
Booked Royal Air Maroc from Lagos. Flight was for 6:05am 13th August. Arrived Casablanca at 10.30am. RAM delayed my flight twice. Waited for 28hrs in Casablanca Morocco before finally leaving for New York. Left Casablanca at 3pm on the 14th.
....my stay in Casablanca...Lovely staff, ready to help even though it's hard to communicate as they don't speak English. Just a handful of them do. But BAD food. I was lucky to get a good spot at the lounge....nice beds though. I was told that the hotel rooms got filled up pretty fast.
Arrived JFK at 6pm. Didn't get off the plane till about 6:30. The border control officer only did my biometrics and asked where I was heading to, course of study, if it was my first time in the US and if I had any foods or drinks. I reached out to get my documents asking if he wanted to see any and he said not to bother, he trusts me. Baggage claim took more than 40mins before I could get my bags.
Met with my school staff waiting to welcome and receive international students. It was pretty late already... 8pm US time. There was a shuttle provided to get to school. I've kinda settled in but I need to complete my sleep.

The airport pickup is actually the least of my problems. I'd be missing my flight from JFK to Detroit, and the money is non-refundable. Also, spending 28hours in a lounge in Cassablanca is not even something I want to think about now.

Is there really nothing that can be done? Like get them to put one on an earlier flight? I've sent them a mail but no reply yet.

Mehn!!! At this point, I have no idea. It's really sad and I can't even imagine what 28hrs will be like.

bleeping Royal Air Maroc just changed my itinerary 24hours to departure. With the new schedule I would have to spend 28hours in Cassablanca, miss my connecting flight from JFK to Detroit, and miss my scheduled school pick-up from the airport. This new schedule would be both costly and terribly inconvenient for me. What can I do please?

Same here. The moment I saw your post, I had to check my mail. For your scheduled school pick up, I think you should send a mail ASAP to your school telling them the new development.

Your inlaw got rejected because of the school he applied to. The rate at which applicants who apply to such one storey schools like CMU, VIU etc is high. Tell your inlaw to apply to a better school if his intent is to study.

It's either Carnegie Mellon University or Central Michigan University. The former is highly ranked but he didn't specify which he applied to.

Oga stop creating a molehill out of nothing. This thread wasn’t created for just you. You don’t have to bring the fact that you omitted to pick the right luggage to nairaland. Deal with it. Even if it costs $500 to go back to JFK, then get to it. That’s why you should have prepared for eventualities like this. Other people are here too with issues bothering on why the post was created. And if you staying wherever you intend staying hinges on what you brought or didn’t bring from Nigeria, then my brother I pity you.

No!No!!No!!!
This is a totally wrong and inappropriate way of addressing someone who came to this forum to seek for solution and advice to get out of a messy situation his first day in the US. If you could not render help, you should have not commented at all.
That being said, your tone is rather rude and unjustly.

Hello,

Please i need assistance. I received my I-20 on monday (6th August 2818) and the start date on my I-20 is August 20th 2018 and the school classes will commence on August 27th 2018. I have the plan of applying for a Visa tomorrow (9th August 2018) but i dont know if i'll be able to get an appointment date for Student visa in August either in Lagos or Abuja. What do you suggest i do? Can someone arrive to the school after August 27th? Please I need someone to enlighten me. I'll really appreciate.

Your best bet will be to defer your admission to Spring. However, you can request for an expedited appointment.
And No, you don't arrive after the start date on your I20. You should be there 30days before or on the day stated.

Hi everyone, please I want to make Enquiries on behalf of a family friend who will be travelling soon.

If a flight from Lagos to jfk is scheduled to arrive jfk by 1:30pm, is it safe to book a connecting flight for 2:30pm from the same jfk to another state the same day?. I mean an a hour interval after landing as displayed on the airline booking page.?

I will appreciate your responses please

Though I've not traveled yet but from my findings, you are most likely to leave the airport 2-4hrs after you arrive as an international traveler because of all the POE procedures, queues, document check, questions and all. Of course it could be less but meeting up with a connecting flight an hour later is not feasible.

Good morning guys
I booked my ticket and I'll be leaving on 13th. I heard there's a 'yellow card' and yellow fever vaccine um supposed to get from the airport or I won't be able to travel? Is this true? Please how do I go about it?

There are specific health centres for this purpose. If you are in Lagos and on the Island, go to CMS, there's a local govt office there beside that big bookshop. I was charged 3k for it.

The list of prohibited stuff is here but what comes to mind is stay away from Meat , hence why sometimes indomine is allowed and sometime it not because of the chicken in the spice .
https://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/prohibited-and-restricted-items

The standard is 2 bags of 23kg each and a hand luggage . anything outside that is extra charge but the best place to check is the airline

All liquid such as even perfume, toothpaste , deodorant should be in your checked bag and not your handluggage as liquid is not allowed in hand luggage . Keep your money in your handluggage or pocket or something that is with you at all times and keep your document with you to be with you at all time. make sure you remain calm so you dont forget anything such as document on the plane or in the airport .

Wow!!! God bless you for this.
But I saw gold on that list. Is it inclusive of gold wristwatch/jewellery too?

All airline is 23kg for a standard bag. Then check if it one or two bags as British Airways for example is now selling ticket with one bag ..... most route to the US is 2 bags of 23kg .....

then there usually an option to increase it up to 32kg if you pay extra. It never free for anything over 23kg

Aĺll airlines have their baggage policy online and what you see on their website is the truth. Any other thing outside of that is heresay

Oh wow!!! Thank you for the info.

Hello good people.... The queen of silent followers association over here whup whup

July 21st, 7:30 I was interviewed by the beautiful black American Lady (the young light-skinned one), she was just so calm and focused and it really helped me regain my confidence. Whenever she asked a question I didn't have an immediate answer, I would say excuse me.... The time it takes for her to reply, I was already thinking up an answer. I did breathe-in-breathe-out exercise at the beginning.

She was just staring at me and smiling, not typing much.... I couldn't afford to fidget or flinch at any question.

I: Good morning ma'am

VO: Good morning, and how do you do?
I: I am great, thank you and you?

VO: good, good. pass me just your i20 and passport please. So what's your course of study?
I: Masters of social work at east Tennessee State University in Johnson city Tennessee

VO: what do you do now?
I: I am currently employed at xyz specialist center, a special needs school that caters to children with developmental disorders like autism, ADHD and Down's syndrome. As a program facilitator, my main duties are (she cuts me off, she was cross-checking with my DS160 throughout)

VO: so who would be sponsoring this trip?
I: I got a merit scholarship that covers 50% of my tuition, my great-uncle and sister would cover the rest of my expenses. Then she goes through my i20

VO: Why didn't you apply to more affordable programs?
I: well most of the other schools expect their MSW students to pick a concentration at the second year but since I don't have a BSW nor basic SW knowledge, I wanted programs that offer a generalist practice model where I would be able to experience every aspect of the profession

VO: any standardized tests
I: yes, I sat for the GRE with a score of 314 and IELTS with an overall band score of 8

VO: who would you be staying with? Do you know anyone that has applied to or attending this school?
I: I will be staying on campus at the Buccaneers ridge apartment and already made a deposit. No I don't know anyone at the school

VO: how then did you know about the school
I: I made use of the worksheet available on the EducationUSA website and was able to solidly define my priorities. Then I researched for schools using socialworkdegreeguide.com, usnews, mastersportal and gradcafe and I was able to shortlist the programs fitting my requirements.

VO: What other schools did you apply to and how many admits?
I: southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, University of Maine at Orono, Michigan State University at East Lansing, Ohio State University at Columbus and Georgia State at Atlanta. I was admitted by four of them.

VO: can I have bank statements to backup your claims (handed over my sis first, savings with over #11m) what does your sister do?
I: she is a level 13 civil servant with the Lagos State govt

VO: (just looks at front page of the statement), has she ever left the country?
I: No, she hasn't

VO: looks at my Uncle's (>$100k), where does he reside and what does he do?
I: He stays at Maryland and is a real estates agent

VO: how did he get to the US?
I: (laughing) he's my great-uncle and it would have been rude for me to ask him that, it was a long time ago even before my mum was born. From the stories passed down, I hear he was given a federal scholarship when he was in secondary school and later citizenship, I don't really know specifics, you know how stories can change when passed from generations to generations.

VO: (laughing along with me) congratulations, I would be approving your visa..... Blah blah DHL.... Blah blah i20.... POE
I: thank you ma'am, I do hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
VO: I hope so too, thank you

This is my second interview, was denied June 27th.... Will dig that up and post later.

It would be remiss of me not to thank the wonderful people of this thread especially Texrem (wonderful man with a beautiful soul), Sorelee, Walsprings, lagosismyhome, profojah, meritdee and sponge3.

Wow!!! It was indeed an interesting interview.
Congratulations.
