Politics / Court Adjourns Edo APC Guber Candidate’s N700m Corruption Case To October 15 by nnnnews247: 3:27am On Jul 19, 2020
The Federal High Court sitting in Benin on Tuesday adjourned the trial of the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, in September 19 Edo Governorship Election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and four others until October 15.

Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the case to enable the counsels to file a reply to the pending motions challenging the jurisdiction of the court to try the case.

The other defendants in the case include Chief Dan Orbih, erstwhile State chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the state Chairman of the party, Tony Aziegbemi, former Deputy Governor of Edo, Lucky Imasuen, and Efe Erimuoghae-Anthony.

The defendants are being tried on charges bordering on alleged N700 million money laundering case filed against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Although Justice Umar had, on Thursday, June 18, validated the corruption charges against the defendants whose case had suffered setback on July 7 following the inability of Mr Ize-Iyamu to appear in court because of his ill health.

At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, Ize-Iyamu arrived the court as early as 8:30 am., while his lawyer, Charles Edosomwan (SAN), objected to the EFCC’s Counsel, Ahmed Imoovba’s request to continue with the case when the pending motions before the court were yet to be heard.

Mr Edosomwan prayed the court to grant the defendants seven day’s extension of time to react to the EFCC’s motion on point of law inline with the rules of the court.

Mr Imoovba and counsels to the other defendants did not oppose Edosomwan’s application challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the suit. Similarly, Mr Imoovba, in his own separate motion, sought for extension of time to file his reply to Edosomwan’s objection.

Justice Umar, after listening to the submissions of both counsels, ruled that he had given all the parties seven days within which to file all relevant documents to court before the commencement of its vacation on July 27.

Justice Umar adjourned the case until Oct. 15 for further hearing. Recall that the EFCC, in Suit No. FHC/BE21C/ 2016, had filed an eight-count charge against the defendants over alleged illegal receipt of public funds to the tune of N700 million for the purpose of the 2015 general election.

The EFCC further accused the defendants of conspiring among themselves to commit the offence in March 2015, alleging that they took possession and control of the funds without any contract awarded.

Politics / Coronavirus: 2021 AFCON Qualifiers Postponed by nnnnews247: 8:10pm On Mar 13, 2020
Two rounds of 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers scheduled for March have been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said on Friday.

Rounds three and four of the pool qualifiers were due to be played in the international window from March 25 to March 31.

But the CAF emergency committee has postponed the games until further notice, without providing alternative dates.

Also, FIFA postpones South American World Cup qualifiers over coronavirus.

The Nations Cup finals in Cameroon have been moved forward to next January and February to avoid the rainy season, which means the qualifiers will have to be completed this year.

That could see a delay to the start of the African qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup which were due to start in October.

The Nations Cup qualifiers would have involved 48 countries.

Many players would have been travelling from the major European leagues in Italy, France, England, Germany and Spain, where the coronavirus has disrupted domestic fixtures.

CAF has also postponed qualifiers for the 2020 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for April and this month’s Women’s Under-20 World Cup preliminaries.

“We would like to assure you that CAF is monitoring the situation closely and working with the competent authorities such as WHO (World Health Organisation) on the impact of the virus in the continent and CAF competitions,” a statement said.

The African Nations Championship (CHAN), a national team competition for home-based players, is still on in Cameroon from April 4 to April 25.

But this is dependent on the findings of the CAF medical committee who will visit the country this weekend to assess preventative measures taken by the Local Organising Committee.

Morocco’s football federation has called a meeting for Monday to decide whether they will play in the tournament.

Nairaland / General / Over 100m Nigerians Threathened By Desertification, Deforestation, Erosion – Oha by nnnnews247: 11:57am On Dec 16, 2019
A former Governor of Imo, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, says over 100 million or 50 percent of Nigerian citizens are directly or indirectly threatened by desertification, deforestation and erosion.

Ohakim made this known in a paper he delivered at the 2019 Public Service Lecture and Award Series of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association, Imo State Branch.

The lecture which held in Owerri had the theme: “Nigeria: The Leadership Question”.

Also, Gov. Ganduje promises to continue working for development of Kano state.
Ohakim said that the annual rate of deforestation in Nigeria stood approximately at four per cent or about 400,000 hectares to 450,000 hectares.

According to him, out of 909.890km2 of the country’s land area, about 600,000km2 or 65.94 per cent of the total land area had been lost to desert encroachment.

“Over 100 million people or 50 percent of our citizens are directly or indirectly being threatened by desertification, deforestation and gully erosion,” he said.

Ohakim called on Nigerians to cooperate with governments in curbing deforestation by stopping what he called “people’s bizarre behaviour such as refuse madness, indiscriminate cutting of trees, open defecation, over grazing and others in the midst of climate emergency”.

“It is an inescapable fact that we have gotten to the point of profound disconnect from our environment and one another.
